App Installer Miniconf

2011-01-27 Thread FlorianFesti
As you already may have read there was a cross distro meeting in Nürnberg about
a shared app installer effort.

For me - who didn't even know about the meeting two weeks in advance - the
main concern was what kind of people would be there and how we ever could get
to an agreement on anything. And even if we did how could this ever be
transformed into something working. It turned out that the people from the
different distribution have pretty much the same mind set and a very fine sense
on what they don't want to have forced onto their own and onto everybody elses'
distribution. So although there is a lot of actual (meta) data that we all
considerd a) difficult to create and b) worth sharing we all very quickly came
to a - not even spoken out - agreement not to share any actual data or
infrastructure. Instead shared data should either live upstream or every one
has it's own copy and we think - and talk - about sharing or syncing later. So
for now this is basically about sharing code and formats.

The second thing that became clear very soon was that if the whole project
should come to life soon it needs to be build out of existing part. Sure there
would be a lot of glue missing but writing things from scratch would not get us
anywhere. Using a existing projects and infrastructure hopefully would make it
easier to get the overall plan accepted. As a result each distribution is
contributing a few pieces.

So the overall plan has 4 parts:

Static meta data that can be shiped within the repository and also works
offline from a CD/DVD. This is not completely unlike the optional packages in
comps but with a bit more data about the applications. The idea is to
autocreate this data from desktop files - which may be enhanced a bit. We'll
see how far this really works and if we need to add manually created data or
not. So there is a mid term perspective to also add non GUI stuff to this but
we'll go for desktop apps only in the first step.

For fancy new things like comments and ratings there will be servers where this
data is stored and can be maintained by a user community online. There already
is an API that covers this. The Social Desktop API Open Collaboration Server
(OCS) has a module for content - applications in our case. How exactly the
OCS will be used is still to be determined. This is really not my area of
expertise. As far as I understood you can have per user account and friends and
suggestions and what ever or just comments and ratings. This is probably up to
whoever is going to actually run the service.

Screen shots will be stored on a different (http) server but linked from the
OCS. As there already is screenshots.debian.net we might use that (via proxy)
for the start before we setup something like that on our own. (Elite diplomats
looking for a challenge can also go for an agreement for a shared server.)

These three data sources are then brought together within the client. The idea
is that as there are different repositories there also are different OCS
servers - either providing information for different applications or different
information on the same applications. This way comments or ratings could be
shared between distributions without any of them loosing control over their own
data. Details being determined by the per distro or even per user configuration.
The client can be an GUI application or a server offering a web interface (IIRC
one of the Mageia guys said he's going to write one). To get a GUI client there
will be some steroids added to the Ubuntu Software Center which already has a
similar functionality using it's own data formats and protocols.

Ok, this is the overall plan. There already is an announcement containing more
technical details and further pointers:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/distributions/2011-January/000411.html

Be aware that there are still a lot of people to convince (including you) and
technical issues to solve to really make that happen. Take the technical
details with a grain of salt. Also there will need to get more people involved.
I'll give a talk on the upcoming FudCon to help with that.

Florian

PS: There are two side project that I personally consider as interesting: The
first is a way to match packages between different distros. I could imagine
that the package db offers links to the specs and patches of the other
distributions. May be someone in this area wants to pick that up.

Second thing may be adapting the Debian tagging system (Debtags) for Fedora.
With the package matching in place we could start with a quite big data set
instead of zero. But there probably also is quite some work to do - and be it
just porting their tools from dpkg to rpm...

 Hi,

I've been looking at the issue for both rt 3.6 and 3.8.
I have a rather full featured patch for 3.8 and I took the Debian

for 3.6. However, I'm not happy with 3.6, it's lacking the script to
 fix
all the passwords. I'll try to come up with something better in the
 next
few days. Here's my WIP for reference.

 Regards,
 Xavier

Here are the updated patches against master and el5 branches. I only
have an rt 3.6 to test against, so the 3.8 patch is not run time
 tested,
 but I'm confident.
The only missing bit is a paragraph about the password mass-update
script in the UPGRADING file for 3.6.

Sorry, slightly wrong patches, it was missing the patch to the UPGRADING
file. Here is a fixed one for 3.8. I've pushed the 3.6 patch to el5.

 http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2744662
 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/rt3-3.6.10-2.el5

Ralf, Mark, I let you give a test at 3.8 on Rawhide/F14/F13 and EL6,
 respectively.

Xavier, please don't try to rush it.

I'm not trying to rush anything. I'm satisfied with the patches I have, so
I've built the rpms for the OS release I'm running in production. I've
indeed tested it locally. However I can't test against rawhide, F13, F14
and EL6, because I don't have any RT instance with this releases. I
obviously won't commit anything to this branches and let this for people
that can actually test the patches.

So far, from visual inspection only, I am not necessarily opposed to
your patch but I like the debian patches more.

Imho, the Debian patches are incomplete. It only fixes password hashes
 upon user login,
This exactly why I like them. They are working transparently without
user or maintainer interaction.

which is not enough to fix the security issue. You can't
expect to force all users to log in and all hashes that have not been
updated are still vulnerable to a brute force attack. The only real
solution is to use the vulnerable-passwords script to mass update them.
Partially agreed. A mass update is the only way to assure this.

However, one can not expect maintainers to run this script, nor can we
run this script during rpm updates.

That said, my current preference for Fedora 13 and 14 is a combination of
* Adopting Debian's patch.
* Adding the vulnerable-passwords script.

For Fedora 15 backporting from bestpractical's upstream (which is,
AFAIU, you did) is feasible, because upgrading Fedora's will always
require maintainer interaction.

In an ideal world, IMO, a solution would look differently:
Launching start up would perform a mass conversion.

BTW: Did you check if rt's upgrade scripts take care about this CVE (I
haven't yet)?

This script is missing with the Debian patches.
My own patches were created using the commits from the 3.8-salted_password
branch from RT's git repository, that I then adapted to target 3.6.

I touched it last, and no, you did not. I pulled down the x86_64 builds
from yesterday to have a look. RPM didn't complain when I applied them
to my system manually, and the krb5-libs package still claims to provide
those shared libraries with those versions.

So, yeah, this is confusing to me as well.

I got assorted warnings this morning about perl, krb5, and Qt

bogus and the dependency checker just had some kind of indigestion
today.

So, yeah, this is confusing to me as well.

I got assorted warnings this morning about perl, krb5, and Qt
dependencies being broken for different packages. I suspect they're all
bogus and the dependency checker just had some kind of indigestion

Others are looking into this, but I believe a new createrepo build has
led to some interesting compose results in at least one repository

fedpkg build version numbering discrepancy

2011-01-27 Thread Jean-Marc Pigeon
Hello,

Hoping to be wrong.

Today I was working on my package after a long time,
I upgraded from version 2.1-320 to 2.1-400.

I didn't fedpkg new-sources and only updated
the spec file to be 2.1-400 (sources file was
still referring to 2.1-320).
fedpkg commit ; fedpkg push

Next, fedpkg build

Koji reported me 2.1-400 was compiled no trouble.
how come? new tar file was not event uploaded...

Is my understanding right?, koji build
report spec file version while crunching
sources file version!
Did I missed something or we are in easy mistake
situation??.

Really depends if the rpm Version tag is 2.1-400 or if you are talking
about Version: 2.1, Release: 400.

The Release is the number of times the package at that upstream version
has been packaged. When unpacking the source it expects (unless you've
given it a different path) to find the sources as package-version so
package-2.1 in your case, and the 320,400 means nothing...

If you aren't talking about Release: 400 then everything I've said above
is null and void and I have no idea.

It looks like the clement package, whose maintainer should reread

Re: @core in F14 pulls in libX11

It seems that the core yum group pulls in X11 libraries, at the very
least on x86_64, via the following dependency chain:

 policycoreutils
 dbus-glib
 gobject-introspection
 cairo
 libX11

Does that much seriously need to be in what we consider a bare minimum
 Fedora install?

It was an unexpected complicated interaction between policycoreutils
and dbus-glib and gobject-introspection, and for Fedora 15 we broke
every single one of those links. Unfortunately it was only noticed
very late in the cycle for F14 and would be hard to fix there.

So the potential for disasters is real?

It would help to know which package this is about. :)

It looks like the clement package, whose maintainer should reread
the packaging guidelines for packages with svn revisions as part of
 their e-v-r combinations.

 http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:NamingGuidelines#NonNumericRelease

It look like you should have read my email :-)

Let be straight and simple (package name doesn't
matter here)

1) Spec file say version: 1.2.3
2) sources file say tar file: 1.0.0
sources as included in git and generated
   by fedpkg new-sources

Koji build say, compiling 1.2.3 everything fine
but rpm contents itself is build with 1.0.0

This what I noticed this afternoon
Possible?: yes/no

What I am saying, if we push spec file forgetting
about updating sources file with the new version
number, we could have a version discrepancy
between rpm number build by koji and actual
real contents.

Is my question simple enough?

Nope. clement-2.1.400-1.fc15.src.rpm contains clement-2.1.400.tar.gz
and not clement-2.1.320.tar.gz.

Sources can be in either the sources file or the git repository.
Since you added clement-2.1.400.tar.gz to the repository, Koji took it
from there.

Ok, this means having an uptodate sources file is not
mandatory. I pushed the tar file in
same time as spec to GIT, koji was smart enough to forgive
my error.

So I can work one way or the other...
right?

While it will technically work, uploading tarballs and other binaries
to git is a bad idea. git behaves very badly with larger files such
as 524 KB tarballs because they clutter or obfuscate commit diffs and
they remain in the repository's history forever, making every clone of
the git repository take substantially more time and network traffic to
create. So if at all possible, please do not upload your tarballs to
git, but rather use the sources file.

It's probably worth noting that the yum command line allows you to do
things like:

yum --installroot=... -- install @core -cairo

...so if you need a minimal root for --installroot or mock etc. ... then
you don't have to go straight to hardcoding everything.
