I'm a long time Fedora contributor, and since 2.5 years a software engineer for RH :) I have been building RPMs for myself on and off almost since I started at Red Hat and switched from Debian to Fedora. I built RPMs for Rivendell [1] which is a large radio automation suite and some recommended getting that into Fedora but at the time it seemed too daunting. Now I am getting into DJing and in particular using FOSS to do it. I have used Mixxx and xwax. I am becoming the co-maintainer of Mixxx in rpmfusion [2] and have just submitted my first package review request for Fedora for xwax. I've stopped half way through because of lack of time though :| I'm a sponsor and I would be happy to sponsor you. But first I would like to see slightly more of your packaging skills / understanding of the Fedora packaging guidelines (I already took a quick look at your xwax package). There are 2 ways to show your package ninja skills, you can create 1 or 2 more packages (which I will then review together with pal), see here for a list of potential candidates: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/WishList If you would be interested in packaging up a game or 2 let me know and I'll update the Games SIG wishlist page, as I think that needs some love :) Also we can always use some more nice fonts in Fedora, see the fonts wishlist, and also: http://mairin.wordpress.com/category/unpackaged-font-of-the-week/ Or instead of doing some more packages, you could do some unofficial reviews, also described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_get_sponsored_into_the_packager_group Regards, Hans -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

libevent-1.4.13 compatbility
Hi, I am trying to package forked-daapd and it depends on libevent 1.4.13. When asking forked-daapd's maintainer about the compatibility with libevent2, I've got this into reply: libevent2 is not and will not be supported; you need to use libevent 1.4.x. Which I guess means either I'd have to package libevent1 for Fedora (which seems to be PITA ... files have same names etc.), or patch forked-daapd to use libevent2 and maintain the patch. What's so horrible about libevent2 that the upstream author won't support it? Is it that difficult to make and maintain the patch for libevent2 compatiblity? Non-building experiemntal draft of the package is at http://mcepl.fedorapeople.org/tmp/forked-daapd-0.14-0.fc15.src.rpm (you need also avl package from -testing to build it). Any ideas? Re: [systemd-devel] systemd - move /selinux to /sys/fs/selinux - maybe remove /srv ?

Probably not so much on the desktop, but the boundaries are blurry, and I see no reason to set things up differently in this respect between servers and desktops. I see little benefit in removing this directory. I think moving /selinux is a bit more complicated then just a simple kernel change. We have libselinux changes, Lots of tools have learned over the years the path of /selinux and lots of users know about it. I am willing to work towards the goal of moving /selinux, but I might end up with a symbolic link if we can not fix all of the problems. A symbolic link from /selinux to point at /sys/fs/selinux/ is a good idea to help people migrate. The startup tools should be able to create this if /sys/fs/selinux/ is not present, right? This is not necessarily easy to do actually, since for upgraded systems /selinux needs to be an actual directory in the rootfs to be useful as mount points. At boot time the rootfs is read-only, hence removing the dir then and turning it into a symlink is difficult. However, we can use the same approach as we did for moving /var/run to /run: on new installs create it as a symlink and on upgrades simply make it a bind mount. For the long run we could also add %post scripts to filesystem.rpm which moves away the old /selinux, and recreates it as symlink. Unfortunately that cannot be done completely atomic, but that property is not really necessary here anyway I think. So, yeah, it isn't super-pretty doing this move, but we can handle it more or less exactly like the /var/run → /run move. Sounds all fine. I think we should get the kernel patch merged as soon as possible. It will not harm anything if we don't use it now, and continue to use /selinux as long as needed. But it will definitely help solving the chicken egg problem when we are ready to do the switch. Resetting network devices between ifconfig level and desktop level
Hope no one minds me writing to the devel list but I got no reply on user list. I have got inconsistent eth devices between what Fedora Gnome Desktop is telling me and what ifconfig is telling me and what 'service network restart' is telling me. Do I have to do a reinstall or is there some way of resetting things ? Eclipse Mylyn 3.5 update: Please make sure this doesn't break your Mylyn dependent Eclipse plug-ins
Hi, I've recently been working on updating the Eclipse Mylyn stack in Fedora. For the impatient, eclipse-mylyn* 3.5.1 packages are already available in rawhide ;-) Updates for F15 will be pushed soon. As some of you might know Eclipse Mylyn is now a top-level Eclipse project and has been split into several sub-projects as of their 3.5 release. With release 3.5 of Mylyn, there are now a total of 17 binary RPMs available in Fedora. The two most exciting new features are custom workflow support for Bugzilla bug trackers and Mylyn Builds (which provides swift CI interaction from within Eclipse). With its new custom workflow support, Mylyn 3.5 can now be used to interact (without restriction) with Red Hat's Bugzilla instance. There is no need to switch to the browser anymore. See [1] as to how to set up a Red Hat Bugzilla task repository with the correct custom transitions file. Note that we are currently working with upstream to make this setup even easier. Due to Mylyn's restructuring upstream, we have decided to restructure Fedora SRPMs as well. [2] describes the new Fedora SRPMs/RPMs in detail. If you are a Mylyn user, updates from 3.4 to 3.5 should work fine without further action. If you are a maintainer of an Mylyn dependent Eclipse plug-in in Fedora, this could mean that you have to update requirements/build requirements in your spec-file. Please make sure that your plug-ins work with new Mylyn 3.5 packages in Fedora. I'd like to push the Mylyn 3.5 update for Fedora 15 soon and would appreciate if you could make sure that this doesn't break your plug-ins. [2] should provide you with enough information as to what has changed in rawhide (or will change soon for F15). Feel free to get back to me should you have questions regarding the Mylyn update. I'm also on IRC in #fedora-java, #fedora-devel, etc. My nick is jerboaa. I seem to be running 2.32.52. I just needed whatever version would interoperate with my Mandriva machines. Good news is current unison builds just fine with the existing SPEC with trivial updates. Can somebody recommend an existing package to use as an example that maintains multiple versions of a source tree to build multiple versions of the main binary? Don't do that. It's not a good path to take. When you have multiple binary rpms built from a single source rpm, anytime there's a change to any of the included sources all of the binary rpms end up being updated. This is not desirable for end users. Yes, maintaining separate source and binary packages is more work for the packager but it is nicer for the end user. The binary RPMs are small, updates are very infrequent ( 1/yr), and Unison is not a very widely used package. Really this is a non-issue, compared to the really mighty packager/Fedora infrastructure burden you propose as the alternative. On Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 03:06:55PM +0200, Matej Cepl wrote: I am trying to package forked-daapd and it depends on libevent 1.4.13. Any ideas? Help upstream by converting forked-daapd to use libevent2. I suspect one of two things will happen: - either you'll do this and your patches will be accepted upstream - or you'll quickly discover what's so horrible about libevent2 (:-) Rich. -- Richard Jones, Virtualization Group, Red Hat http://people.redhat.com/~rjones libguestfs lets you edit virtual machines. I've stopped half way through because of lack of time though :| I have played with their realtime kernel a tiny bit (just installed it). I know what you mean on time though :-) I'm a sponsor and I would be happy to sponsor you. But first I would like to see slightly more of your packaging skills / understanding of the Fedora packaging guidelines (I already took a quick look at your xwax package). There are 2 ways to show your package ninja skills, you can create 1 or 2 more packages (which I will then review together with pal), see here for a list of potential candidates: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/WishList Ugh everything on that list that looked easy, or interesting either was already done, had no MakeFile/configure script, was incompatible with Fedora or wouldn't build easily. I have updated the wiki with the issues I ran into on six packages: https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=Package_maintainers_wishlistaction=history If you would be interested in packaging up a game or 2 let me know and I'll update the Games SIG wishlist page, as I think that needs some love :) If you can add some on there that might be compatible with Fedora, and have configure/MakeFiles I'd definitely be willing to take a shot. Please update it, games are fun :-) oh wait I see it has a lot of stuff already: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Games/WishList I'll take a look.. this looks fun http://code.google.com/p/naev/ Also we can always use some more nice fonts in Fedora, see the fonts wishlist, and also: http://mairin.wordpress.com/category/unpackaged-font-of-the-week/ I may do this in the mean time because packaging fonts at first seems like it should be easy *crosses fingers* Or instead of doing some more packages, you could do some unofficial reviews, also described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_get_sponsored_into_the_packager_group maybe after I get another package review request up.
