same ideas in this thread, would be having %{_libexecdir}/plan9

   subdirectories.
You understood it wrong, %{_libexecdir}/plan9 should contain only
  binaries
and nothing else, the rest would go into %{_libdir}/plan9.

I don't understand why exactly %{_libexecdir}/plan9/* would be
 preferable to
the more-straightforward /usr/bin/plan9/*. Generally, programs that
 are in
libexec are meant to _not_ be executed directly, which is not the
 case here.

That would indeed be better, I guess.
It's okay with both FHS 2.3 and our current Guidelines (or maybe I'm
just
missing something), rpmlint complains about %{_bindir} subdirectory,
though.

(...)
9base.x86_64: E: subdir-in-bin /usr/bin/plan9/dc
The package contains a subdirectory in /usr/bin. It's not permitted to
create
a subdir there. Create it in /usr/lib/ instead.
(...)

I'm going to update the package review since this more like an rpmlint
issue.

I just got back from FUDCon Panama so I may have read a few things too
quickly... What's the use case for these programs?

   Just for scripts?

For users that are used to plan9 behaviour and want to use them from their
   shell?

Pretty much those. Plus they are fun to play with.

So, to be clear, you're saying this is just for the latter (users that want
to have plan9 behaviour) and not the former (for scripts)?

No, they are both for users and for scripts.

I'm sorry I haven't taken a look at your spec file -- does the latest
incarnation place the binaries in some non-PATH directory and then have
prefixed symlinks to those binaries in /usr/bin?

The latest version puts binaries in /usr/bin/plan9/ and other stuff in
/usr/lib[64]/plan9/ (etc, lib and share subdirectories, currently).
Having the etc and share directories in %{_libdir} is not all that great...

   Either %{_libdir}/plan9 or %{_libdir}/plan9 + %{_libexecdir}/plan9 split
seem that they may fit the bill here. One of those may be more right than
the other depending on what use case we're trying to support.

Subdirectories of %{_bindir} really should not be used in Fedora.

  But why exactly?

subdirectories of /bin are prohibited by the FHS. The subdirectories that
may be located in /usr/bin by the FHS are there specifically for
compatibilities sake for two selected subsystems (mh and X11R6).
Subdirectories of bin directories don't make any more sense than any other
directory as they are not added to the PATH by default and thus are not
user invokable progams without further modification to the environment.
Placing binaries that are not to be in the default PATH are better placed in
a more standard location (either libexecdir or libdir depending on the
use-case). Subdirectories of /usr/bin are just plain non-standard
 locations.

Yes, I'm aware of that restriction for /bin; that doesn't apply to /usr/bin,
though. Users have to adjust their PATH no matter which directory I choose.

I don't find libexec to be a standard directory. Also, as Matthew already
stated, this should be used for non-directly invoked binaries, if at all.

And for %{_libdir}, according to FHS:

/usr/lib includes object files, libraries, and internal binaries that are
not intended to be executed directly by users or shell scripts.

This says it all.

%{_bindir}/plan9 seems like a perfect location; it's just some people don't feel
it's right...

To be clear, this change has only happened in rawhide with your last commit
so it's a bit early to tell what harm there is. With the clarification that
the dynamic UID range has started allocating at the top instead of the
bottom in 2007, it makes a lot more sense that we can make this change. Are
you sure you only want to allocate 0-200, though? Remember that the static
assignments are our limited resource, perhaps you want to go higher than
 that?

I guess Peter was talking about this 0-200 static ID reservation
threshold change - and it happened in Fedora 12 (setup-2.8.7-1.fc12)
with no reported complaints or conflicts so far.

Yes, static assignments are limited resource and it probably makes sense
to increase it even a bit further , however - in ~2 years since the
change of the threshold to 200, 15 static new uid's were assigned. So if
the trend will continue, there is enough free id's for reservation for
~5-10 years - so the threshold at 200 seems to be enough atm (especially
if the dynamically assigned system id's assignments are going from the
highest limit down).

Intent to package GNOME Shell frippery

2011-06-01 Thread Hans de Goede
Hi all,

Just a quick heads-up that I plan to look unto packaging the
gnome shell frippery extensions this weekend, if you've the
same plans or are already working on this, please let me know.
So we can avoid doing double work.

I plan to use 1 subpackage per extension of the frippery
extension collection, so that people can install only those
which they want without automatically getting all of
them.

Hans

I'd prefer them to be in one package: they are intended to work
together.

I understand that management of extensions has been added to gnome-
tweak-tool. That seems like a better approach to controlling
extensions than using the package manager.

It probably should be dropped as upstream support for a standalone client

Since the lightning extension to thunderbird is packaged, I doubt the effort

This package also gets little use, but it is easy to maintain.

Quick update PPC status

2011-06-01 Thread Phil Knirsch
Hi everyone.

It's been roughly a month since the last update, so i wanted to send out
a quick update of where we are.

Things have been progressing nicely and we now even have 2 mash trees
with install images for testing available for, one for ppc, the other
for ppc64:

http://ppc.koji.fedoraproject.org/mnt/koji/mash/15/

Those are our current development trees, so things might be broken at
times. Also the rpms aren't signed as we're changing stuff to fast and
this isn't a release.

We have tested them on a Power7 box as well as on an older Apple G5, but
your mileage may vary. Especially on Power5 and Power6 the problem still
exists that the unified initramfs of Anaconda is too large to fit into
the initial RAM during bootup, so you'll need to revert to the method
described in the next paragraph.

If you want to go a bit of a safer route you can try out an upgrade from
Fedora 12 to Fedora 15. Dan Horak has described how to do this in a blog
entry he wrote:

http://sharkcz.livejournal.com/8649.html

It's quite a bit of manual work, but it's pretty straight forward what
to do. So feel free to give that a shot if you want to try that way
instead of a fresh install with the mash images and trees.

As stated previously, we won't be doing an official Fedora 15 release,
it's just not ready yet. But Fedora 16 is definitely planed and
currently on track.

Current state of the work can always be found here, as usual:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Architectures/PowerPC

Thanks regards, Phil

 Hey guys,

A long, long time ago (before the extras/core merge in fact i think) i
was given tomboy to help spread the influx of mono packages across
 desktop team.

 IIt's a neat program, but I don't really use it. I'm more of a

I've orphaned it now.  If anyone is interested in it, feel free to take it.

Have we actually switched all userspace to 64-bit on 64-bit machines?
That would exacerbate the initrd size issue quite a lot, wouldn't it?

As well as being significantly less well-tested than the 32-bit support

Are the ExcludeArch trackers still up to date for ppc and ppc64? Is
there an estimate of how many packages are not built for ppc64 that
*are* built for ppc32?

I understand that management of extensions has been added to gnome-
tweak-tool. That seems like a better approach to controlling
extensions than using the package manager.

 Ron

As far as gnome-tweak-tool can activate/deactivate certain extensions, I
would prefer to have a package. This would be convenient for systems
with many users. A global package provides extensions, which are
displayed in gnome-tweak-tool, and users can switch them on and off. No
need to search for extensions and install them individually.

Orphaning compiz

2011-06-01 Thread drago01
Hi,

I have stopped using compiz a while ago and didn't really have much
time to maintain it (it has a lots of open bugs) I decided that
it is probably better to hand it over to someone else who has more
time and actually still uses it.

It has lots abrt of bugs open some of them are bugs inside compiz,
others are driver bugs (some might be actually fixed by updates).

Affected packages:

compiz
compiz-bcop
compiz-fusion
compiz-fusion-extras

I have CC'ed Scott as he has been doing most of the maintenance work
recently, he probably might want to become the primary maintainer,
otherwise fell free to pick them up.

What is the status of Features/YumLangpackPlugin?

2011-06-01 Thread José Matos
Hi,
I have the yum-langpacks plugin installed and it works. :-)

My problem in a sense is that it is limited in scope. :-(

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/YumLangpackPlugin was the feature page
for when the feature was initially deployed. The purpose of this is post is to
raise awareness for this feature and continue to have it implemented to have a
better experience for our users (from where developers are a subset).

1) This feature will also allow firefox and thunderbird to earn langpacks as
they deserve.

In F15 asking

yum list *langpack*

shows that only

koffice
libreoffice
tesseract

support langpacks and tesseract has three letters acronyms for languages:

tesseract-langpack-bul
tesseract-langpack-cat
tesseract-langpack-ces
tesseract-langpack-chi_sim
tesseract-langpack-chi_tra
tesseract-langpack-dan
tesseract-langpack-dan-frak
tesseract-langpack-deu
tesseract-langpack-deu-frak
tesseract-langpack-ell
...

Searching to virtual provides we get:

repoquery --whatprovides \*langpack\*

this adds

moodle-lang

to the bundle.

2) In the Optional/longer term ideas:
3. recommendation for Packaging Guideline for standard naming of langpacks
(eg basename-langpack-lang)

This seems an easy step, both to standardize the form of lang as well as to
suggest a virtual provides to packages that already provide this, I am
thinking in this case of packages like kde-i18n* or kde-i10n*.

What do others think?

Regards,

17:31:52 nirik ok, I guess lets dive in. we have a pile of features today. ;)

17:33:18 nirik tibbs|h: well, we were going to just change default cflags...

17:35:17 tibbs|h Ah, right, that was a static library thing.
17:36:03 nirik ok, will revisit...
17:36:12 nirik #topic Features - Introduction/general comments
17:36:20 nirik so, we have a bunch of features today.
17:36:37 nirik I'd like to note that mether pointed out that many of our
features lack reasonable docs/release notes.
17:36:47 * mclasen scrambles to find the agenda
17:37:00 nirik I don't know if we want to push back on this more today or
not, but thought I would mention it.
17:37:24 nirik Also, I think there's some folks ( rbergeron and abadger1999
at least I think) that were interested in revamping our feature process.
17:37:39 nirik that won't of course affect anything today, but thought I
would mention it.
17:37:49 nirik Anyone have general feature comments before we start on them?
17:38:04 mmaslano rbergeron: ^
17:38:18 abadger1999 Yeah we ewere interested but haven't gotten our act
together.
17:38:31 abadger1999 I'll let rbergeron lead on that since she's the current
feature wrangler :-)
17:38:45 * nirik thinks it needs revamping too, but also has not had time to do
anything about it.
17:39:31 nirik ok, diving in then...
17:39:32 mclasen I think we can do better if we look at different features
differently
17:39:32 mmaslano we should care more about changes. New packages like cloud
feature could be only mentioned in release notes
17:39:51 mmaslano mclasen: I agree
17:39:51 mclasen there cleanups, version updates, default changes,...
17:40:07 nirik yeah, I think things that are release notes/docs/press should
be a bit different from things that need coordination, etc.
17:40:10 nirik mclasen: yep.
17:40:12 gholms How about feature removals?
17:40:35 nirik gholms: like removing hal?

17:40:59 mjg59 Hey, sorry
17:41:16 nirik sure, it would be good to note those for rel-notes, etc too.
17:41:27 mmaslano two categories will be enough. Could break other packages,
can't break.
17:42:02 nirik anyhow, dunno if we can redo the process here today, but do be
thinking about it and coming up with proposals to fix it.
17:42:36 mmaslano probably not, wait for rbergeron

17:44:46 nirik I'd add that we should submit our systemd units files upstream

Installing bash-completion by default in F-16

2011-06-01 Thread Ville Skyttä
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=709647

I'd like to have bash-completion included in F-16's default install. In
my opinion it's in a good enough shape for that already now, and with my
upstream hat on I expect things to further improve before F-16 is out.

Why I'm writing here is that I'd like to hear opinions to which
default-installed comps group should it be added (and set as default
there) - in my opinion the serious candidates are admin-tools and base.
admin-tools doesn't sound right because bash-completion is not really
an admin tool (unless one considers interactive shell usage as admin
activity in general), so I'm inclined to add it to base.

Thoughts?

Appointment to the Fedora Board and reminder of upcoming elections

2011-06-01 Thread Jared K. Smith
The Fedora Board consists of five elected seats and four appointed
seats. In this elections cycle, there will be two openings for
appointed Board seats and three opening for elected Board seats. As
part of the normal Board succession process[0], one Board appointment
is made before Board elections and the other is made after the
election cycle.

I'm happy to announce that Guillermo Gomez has accepted the
responsibility of serving on the Fedora Board. Guillermo has
demonstrated his commitment to Fedora through his tireless efforts on
a number of different fronts, including working on packaging,
development, and ambassador programs. He has also shown his ability
to mentor new contributors and help grow the Fedora community. I have
no doubt that he'll continue these efforts while on the Board, and
that he'll bring his perspective to help the Board as it makes
decisions affecting the direction that Fedora takes. I would like to
publicly thank Guillermo for his willingness to serve, and I hope the
entire Fedora community will join me in welcoming him to the Board.

Guillermo will fill seat A4 (see the Board History[1] for a list of
the seats), which has been held by Stephen Smoogen for the past year.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Stephen for
the work he's done on
behalf of the Fedora Board.

Elections for the three open elected seats on the Board (as well as
FESCo elections) will begin on June 2nd at UTC 0001, as shown on the
Fedora wiki's Elections page[2]. All community members are encouraged
to cast their vote until the elections close at the end of the day
(UTC time) on June 8th. Within a week or two of the end of elections,
another appointment will be made for the remaining Board seat (seat
A3). If you have interest in serving on the Fedora Board, please
don't hesitate to contact me directly to indicate your willingness to
serve.

It seems to work really well in Gnome 3. The applet sits down in the

it used to be.

I just wish I could figure out how to get it to start that way using
gnome-session-properties ... it only seems to include a persistent

Hi, Neal.

According to Kevin Fenzi, the build system had an unplanned outage due
to a needed fsck on the build hosts; and until that is complete, new
builds will wait, queued. You can follow the status of this on the
Fedora Infrastructure ticket below:

https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/2800

I believe this is the cause of the hang you are experiencing.
Hope that helps.

F15 / VirtualBox

2011-06-01 Thread Mike McGrath
I've seen some reports of F15 not working in Virtualbox. There's a few
notes online about possible fixes. Is there some way we can better test
this in the future (I'm thinking about QA but that might not be the right
place).

Smolt has virtualbox rated as pretty common:

http://smolts.org/static/stats/stats.html

Just seems like we're potentially missing a lot of potential users there.
It's preventing the default live CD from running.

This also means anyone using the memtest86+ from install (F15 or F14)

Perl 5.14

2011-06-01 Thread Emmanuel Seyman

Now that Fedora 15 is out, I was hoping we would work perl 5.14 in
rawhide quickly enough as to be able to fix all the resulting bugs in
time for Fedora 16 release.

Is anything planned?

On perl porters were reported serious bugs with 5.14.0, so we are
waiting for 5.14.1 anyway.

At the moment I and Petr are working on new filters, better generating
of provides and requires and automatic script for rebuild of related
packages. We'd like to push all changes in test build target in koji.
Hopefully, this time it will be easier than rebuild for perl5.12.

[Bug 613872] Request for support in EPEL

--- Comment #1 from Bug Zapper tri...@lists.fedoraproject.org 2011-06-01
10:05:08 EDT ---

This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '13'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
