F20 System Wide Change: Perl 5.18

2013-06-11 Thread Jaroslav Reznik
= Proposed System Wide Change: Perl 5.18 =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/perl5.18

Change owner(s): Petr Písař ppi...@redhat.com, Jitka Plesníková
jples...@redhat.com

A new perl 5.18 version brings a lot of changes done over a year of
development. See [1] for more details.

== Detailed description ==
New perl is released every year and updates containing mainly bug fixes follow
during the year. The 5.18.0 version is stable release this year and 5.18.1 and
subsequent revisions will follow during the year to fix issues introduced in
5.18.0.

Because of change in dlopen(3) from RTLD_GLOBAL to RTLD_LOCAL (bug #960048)
[2], we will try to link all native perl module DSOs to libperl.so explicitly.
This item needs discussion. Current status does not allow to use perl
interpreter via dlopen() from other programs (like slapd, snmpd), but proposed
change can bring other unforeseen difficulties (like double-linking).

Does anyone still use system-config-language?

2013-06-11 Thread Jiri Eischmann
Hi,
I wonder if any spin is still using system-config-language. GNOME has
its own graphical utility to install language support, but AFAIK there
is no counterpart in other environments, right?
The problem is that system-config-language is completely broken since
F18 (see [1] because it didn't reflect changes in language groups.

So if there is no spin using it, we should probably remove it from
Fedora because in the current state, it's completely broken and useless.

If there is still need for the utility, then it probably should be
fixed.

BTW what are recommended ways to install language support in e.g. KDE
and Xfce? Is there any other graphical way other than
system-config-language?

Does find-debuginfo.sh get confused, or where do those non-existing

Thank you in advance.

F20 System Wide Change: python-setuptools update to 0.7.x

2013-06-11 Thread Jaroslav Reznik
= Proposed System Wide Change: python-setuptools update to 0.7.x =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Python_setuptools_0.7

Change owner(s): Toshio Kuratomi tos...@fedoraproject.org with help from
Bohuslav Kabrda, Nick Coghlin, and the Python SIG

Update to a new upstream release of python-setuptools that is not completely
compatible with previous releases.

== Detailed description ==
python-setuptools is used as a buildtime dependency in many packages. It is
also a runtime dependency for some packages where it provides a way to load
plugins, load data files, and specify what versions of dependent packages are
needed. In Fedora, we also make use of its multiversioning features to install
some backwards compatibility packages.

The upstream for the python setuptools package has been in a maintenance mode
for many years. During that time we have been shipping a fork, python-
distribute, which has added bugfixes and python3 compatibility but not
significantly altered the API. Just recently, python-setuptools upstream has
become active and released a new version that merges the two forks and is not
completely API compatible. As the older versions won't see bug fixes anymore,
we need to move to this new version but there could be some usages that are
broken by the new version.

Re: Does anyone still use system-config-language?

2013-06-11 Thread Anish Patil
Hi Jiri!

I used to think in the same way that system-config-language is no longer
necessary but apparently it installs supporting packages for the languages and
that is why people still use it.
I agree that some changes are required and we will make necessary changes in
F19.

Thanks,
Anish P.

They come from #line cpp directives which get compiled into .debug_line DWARF
section (readelf -wl or readelf -wL) and rpmbuild extracts them using:

$ /usr/lib/rpm/debugedit --help
-l, --list-file=STRING file where to put list of source and header file
names

In your package:
$ grep -r packet-x509if-ett.c .
./wireshark-1.8.6/asn1/x509if/packet-x509if-template.c:#include
packet-x509if-ett.c

packet-x509if-ett.c ---*/
$ find -name packet-x509if-ett.c
$ _

I did not check how to generate asn1/x509if/packet-x509if-ett.c and/or how to
regenerate epan/dissectors/packet-x509if.c , that is up to you as the package
maintainer.

Interesting .. that explains a bug in OCaml builds too:

[source:
http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//packages/libguestfs/1.23.3/1.fc20/data/logs/x86_64/build.log]

| cpio: libguestfs-1.23.3/resize/list.ml: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
| cpio: libguestfs-1.23.3/resize/str.ml: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
| cpio: libguestfs-1.23.3/resize/string.ml: Cannot stat: No such file or
directory

This is probably incorrect DWARF information. Modules like 'list.ml'
are actually from the OCaml stdlib, so the paths should refer to
%{_libdir}/ocaml/list.ml etc. However we don't in fact ship those
files at all in the OCaml compiler binary package.

BTW, `eu-readelf -w /usr/bin/virt-resize' didn't show anything
suspicious.

| cpio: ocaml-4.00.1/stdlib: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
| cpio: ocaml-4.00.1/stdlib/std_exit.ml: Cannot stat: No such file or directory

These paths are very strange. They are source paths inside the OCaml
compiler source package. I've no idea how they end up being displayed
during the build of something unrelated.

Note that the OCaml compiler generates its own DWARF. It's got
nothing to do with gcc.

Rich.

Packages needing review for inclusion into Fedora:
bookkeeper (BZ948589)
groovy (BZ858127)
jets3t (BZ847109)
jspc-compiler (BZ960720)
maven-native (BZ864084)
zookeeper (BZ823122)

One of those packages also has a dependency which also needs to be reviewed:

If we are to get hadoop into Fedora 20 we need some movement on the

 BTW, `eu-readelf -w /usr/bin/virt-resize' didn't show anything
 suspicious.

This will print you only .eh_frame which is present in the main binary.
.eh_frame contains no source files information.
.debug_line is present only in the separate .debug file:
eu-readelf -w /usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/virt-resize.debug

For eu-readelf the interesting part (readelf -wl equivalent) is: -wline
eu-readelf AFAIK does not have readelf -wL equivalent (decoded line info).

I looked briefly at fixing it to use yum-langpacks - it instantiates
a yum intsance via API and handles all the wrapping (key installation,
dependency errors, etc.) all itself. So most of that code would need
rewritten.

I believe the maintainer was looking at fixing it.

Hi Jiri,

system-config-language is a distro specific tool. It just installs required
packages and set the root user language. I find this tool useful where you
don't need to find particular fonts or input methods explicitly and install
them. Good for novice users. GNOME language support is a different from
system-config-language.

The problem is that system-config-language is completely broken since
F18 (see [1] because it didn't reflect changes in language groups.

system-config-language is used to install language support that includes
fonts, input-method engine and any other packages listed for that language
group in comps file. Since comps moved to start using yum-langpacks and few
language support groups have been removed, system-config-language failed
to install support for those languages. If we decide to re-write this tool
for yum-langpacks then other packages will not get pulled automatically
which have been explicitly listed in comps for some languages.

I still have not got solution on how to balance this in
system-config-language.

So if there is no spin using it, we should probably remove it from
Fedora because in the current state, it's completely broken and useless.

If there is still need for the utility, then it probably should be
 fixed.

I am looking into fixing system-config-language but not sure how much time
will it take.

BTW what are recommended ways to install language support in e.g. KDE
and Xfce? Is there any other graphical way other than
 system-config-language?

 Jiri

Note that GNOME actually does/can apply language settings systemwide. As
of 3.8, which is in F19, if you have a single user who has admin
privileges, changes you make to Language and Input Sources in
Region Language are transparently applied system-wide. If your user
does not have admin privileges, or you have other user accounts, the
panel includes a Login Screen button which, despite the somewhat
misleading name, is basically a 'systemwide settings' panel: if you
click on this, it will ask for any authentication needed, and then let
you set the system-wide settings for those two items.

I don't think it yet tries to install missing fonts / translation
packages, though.

Just as a side note on this, as I wanted to let people know about

should be working again for Fedora 19, and we've sent an update to
Fedora 18 which should fix it there too. Karma on

configuration via systemd-localed. If you're running GNOME you should really

KDE-specific user config, but for other desktops, this should be pretty useful.

 any ideas?

Which boost version resp. which fedora-release? I think it would be the
best to join #fedora-devel irc and and have our discussion there,
wouldn't it?

Dependency issue with some mate packages

2013-06-11 Thread Basil Mohamed Gohar
I cannot update with yum upgrade due to some dependency issues related,
it seems, to the mate-desktop package obsoleting a few other packages.
I am including the full output because results can be related to
loaded-plugins and possibly 3rd-party repositories.

It seems that some *-devel packages are not being updated, while their
binary/executable counterparts are, leading to the conflict.

This has been an issue since at least last week. I tried running yum
clean all over several days in case the error was caught and corrected
already, or if it was due to an outdated mirror, but it appears to still
be an issue.

Here is the output when I attempt to run yum upgrade:

[root@alpha ~]# time yum upgrade
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, priorities, refresh-packagekit

been no cups-php anymore in F19.
This breaks F18 - F19 updates when cups-php has been installed
   (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=971741).
What's the correct procedure here ?

Let user solve this by removing cups-php prior to update ?
- the yum error could be a puzzle for some users
Put Obsoletes cups-php; Provides cups-php into some other package ?
- update is ok, but user is unaware that the php module has gone
Some ideal solution which doesn't break update and notifies user that
CUPS PHP module no longer exists ?

  From :
  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_remove_a_package_at_end_of_life

Make sure the package is properly Obsoleted/Provided

If it is not being replaced, Obsoleted/Provided obviously don't apply.

If some package Provides: cups-php, imagine the nightmare for
  yum install cups-php

And this will also avoid the wanted broken dep (if another package
  really need cups-php)

Typically, one adds only the Obsoletes tag with a maximum version, so the
obsolete package may return with a higher version.

 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Renaming.2FReplacing_Existing_Packages

 | If a package supersedes/replaces an existing package without being

Just to reinforce: please, please do this; have something Obsolete: it.
It is absolutely not correct to just leave the package dangling with
dependencies that break upgrade processes and require users to remove it
manually. Anything that breaks the upgrade bug from release to release
is a bug.

Please just have something Obsolete: it. If you want to notify the user
of the change you can do any or all of the following:

* Include a README.cups-php or something in the %doc of the package
* Ask the documentation team to add a Release Note
* Have the package print out a message about the change on update (there
are 'standard'ish ways to do this, I don't know off the top of my head
if any or all of them are allowed/recommended practice in Fedora, but it
should probably be in the Guidelines somewhere). If you do this, try to
nail the logic such that everyone sees the message only once, at the
point when they do the update that actually does the Obsolete.

If you would prefer to use community-mysql rather than follow onto
MariaDB I suspect the safest thing would be take a backup (you do
that anyway right?) and just doing this from the filesystem is
  probably the simplest way.

Then use a supported method to upgrade to F19 ... Either remove
mysql before this or remove mariadb after this.

For the first we should not be migrating users on upgrades to another
DB solution regardless if it's an fork or not of the already installed
DB and we continue to ship it, secondly if we *must* do that ( which
is it is not in this case since we are continuing to package and ship
mysql ) we should have an opt out way for administrators to do so at
upgrade time instead of having them to backtrack all the migration
steps and revert them followed by them finally having to remove
mariadb in this case an simply big fat warning presented at the end
user during the upgrade phaze which offers him to opt out migration
 and continue to use MySQL...

It's easy to say 'should' this and 'should' that and 'should' the other,
but it's rather more difficult to _do_ it. RPM fundamentally just
doesn't really give you the option of expressing the policy you suggest:
we can't have mariadb obsolete mysql but also have some kind of get-out
clause so people can override the obsolete and instead get
community-mysql. At least, that's my understanding of how the mechanisms
in question work. It just doesn't seem to be a thing that's possible.

I think the best thing that would be possible would be to install
community-mysql manually before triggering the rest of the upgrade, but
dependencies might become an issue. I suppose we could provide a
community-mysql package in F18 so people could switch to it before doing
the upgrade, but its presence might confuse people who didn't understand
the trick we were attempting.

# Date: 2013-06-12
# Time: 16:00 UTC (12:00 EDT, 09:00 PDT)
# Location: #fedora-blocker-review on irc.freenode.net

As Adam mentioned in the last blocker review meeting announcement -
attendance has been rather thin as of late. We'd like to see more
people involved, especially non-QA folks. You don't have to stay for
the whole thing, even helping out for part of the meeting would be
appreciated.

We'll be running through the final blockers and freeze exception bugs.
The current list is available at:
http://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/current

We'll be reviewing the bugs to determine ...

1. Whether they meet the final release criteria [1] and should stay
  on the list
2. Whether they are getting the attention they need

2013-06-11 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=973139

--- Comment #2 from Remi Collet fed...@famillecollet.com ---
I have update to 2.49 and skip failed tests.
For now, until a new upstream version is available since acceptable.

So, our build will mostly rely on test 1, 11 and 12, and packager eyes ;)

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=973139

--- Comment #3 from Remi Collet fed...@famillecollet.com ---
Changes seems really related to GD 2.1.0 feature

From libgd-2.1.0/src/gd_png.c

#ifdef PNG_pHYs_SUPPORTED
/* 2.1.0: specify the resolution */
png_set_pHYs(png_ptr, info_ptr, DPI2DPM(im-res_x), DPI2DPM(im-res_y),
 PNG_RESOLUTION_METER);
#endif

And 32k windows is commented.

/*  png_set_compression_window_bits(png_ptr, 15);  */
