hierarchical comps groups proposal
Hi, I would like to suggest the idea of adding support for hierarchical comps groups to Fedora. The idea is make yum groups in comps more modular, ie groups could require other groups not just packages; at this time I don't think it would require any GUI changes. Currently comps is quite linear (flat) and we have to do silly things like adding a group to add a package to an environment group, and duplicating certain sets of packages across certain groups. Hierarchical groups would allow more flexible package group choices, avoid package repetition in comps, and also allow people to install what they need more precisely. eg Someone might only want to install @gnome-core-desktop @mate-core-desktop, @asian-fonts, etc. I am sure there are many more possible examples. With the Fedora.next initiative now seems a good time to do this. It should probably be made a system-wide change proposal (I only noticed the deadline this week!) but I wanted to post here first for discussion since I think it needs changes to yum, dnf, and maybe other tools. I would be happy to help (at least) prepare a Change proposal for this, specially if other people (stakeholders) are willing to help make this happen. Updated. * Other developers: Packages that use SSL crypto libraries should, after the previous change is complete, start replacing the default cipher strings with SYSTEM. How can we find out which packages would be affected? Anything that requires the library, or only users that refer to a specific symbol? I've updated the text. The idea is to start with a small set of packages using the new method in F21 and increase gradually. What about packages that currently don't explicitly set any policy string (i.e. packages that probably don't care too much about the specifics)? Would this mean adding a call to use SYSTEM to these packages, or would we change the semantics of the API to use SYSTEM by default? I think that we should change the semantics of the API to use the SYSTEM by default. Why are you filing bugs (with patches) you don't understand then? Have you asked *anybody* to help you out with exclusions? Have you gotten in touch with Java|Perl|PythonX|Y|Z SIG and ask for their assistance in better identification of testsuites and if they are being run? You are putting cart before the horse rushing the whole mass bug filing process without understanding consequences. You are going to be ignored. Your bugs are going to get closed/wontfix. You are going to get annoyed. You are not going to achieve much (if anything). Also I didn't ask you (as a package owner) to do it explicitly, I've asked you to accept a patch which should be much more easier. Patch which contains text which you haven't verified is correct. Quoting: +%check +# tests are executed during %build + How do *you* *know* they are executed during build? Hint: Except %mvn_build and ant dist test javadoc these executions most likely don't run tests or if they do they ignore the failures Wouldn't it be easier to change the whatever tool is generating this report to accommodate for this? If package invokes %mvn_build then don't expect there to be a %check section seems like a reasonable heuristic to me. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1072417#c4 to avoid repeating myself. Even if the tool uses heuristics to exclude some groups of packages it will not be obvious why there's no %check section. It could be because tests are executed in %build, because they need root or network access and are disabled, because the test framework used is not available (see DHCP) or anything else. Right, so your patches are basically worthless and you are planning to file possibly hundreds of bugs where maintainers will most likely manually close as WONTFIX/NOTABUG because it's clear to anyone working in their respective SIG what's happening there. A small comment makes it much more clear and straight forward. I want my packages to run tests. If there are tests upstream but I am not running them, sure there should be a comment or even better a FutureFeature bug to fix the testsuite. We are mostly doing all of this in Java SIG packages. Adding useless comment to spec files is not the way to improve things. Re: hierarchical comps groups proposal
Hi, 2014-03-05 9:40 GMT+01:00 Jens Petersen peter...@redhat.com : I would like to suggest the idea of adding support for hierarchical comps groups to Fedora. (I'm not going to contribute actual work on this anyway, but) do we actually need that complexity? I am not sure how complex it is. As Ales pointed out it might allow us to remove environment groups for example so it might actually simplify comps, as well as eliminating some repetitions. Note that more modular comps would also be helpful for people writing kickstart files for example. The idea is make yum groups in comps more modular, ie groups could require other groups not just packages; at this time I don't think it would require any GUI changes. So the proposal is not to show them as really hierarchical, and not to add any structurally new user-visible features[1] just to avoid repetition in the comps file? To me current comps is quite messy because everything has to be flat which limits its flexibility in various ways. But right, *initially* I reckon hierarchical groups need not *require* any GUI changes to anaconda, etc. In the first instance it would be about providing greater structure and more fine-grained groups in comps. Later these could also be used for more advanced selection of groups in the installer and package GUI. Would it be an option to use an XML entity for the duplicated parts, or a similar preprocessing step during generation of comps.xml, to create the current group format instead? That would have the advantage of not having to adjust yum/dnf/anaconda to support the new feature. Perhaps, but the primary goal/motivation is not just to eliminate the duplication of common package sets but to provide a richer, more modular, flexible hierarchy of comps groups. Perhaps an explicit example would help. FYI, first I got a list of possible packages which have their tests run in %build from mizdebsk, then I inspected them and built them *by hand* to verify that was indeed correct (e.g. apache-commons-codec, apache-comons-logging, python-blivet, python-urlgrabber, etc.) So you are filing bugs for components which *are* running tests. Is it so weird that we consider that a non-issue while we have possibly hundreds of packages which are not running tests at all? If you find a patch which is incorrect (that is not running the test suite properly or stating an invalid comment) point me to it and I will work to update it. I don't think you want to use the word hierarchical to describe this. Read this if your package includes a status notifier / system tray icon
Hi, Please read this e-mail carefully and thouroughly, as interoperability of your package (including and especially non-KDE packages!) with upcoming KDE Plasma Workspaces releases depends on it! The next major release of the KDE Plasma Workspaces (i.e. KDE 5, more correctly referred to as Plasma Next or Plasma 2) will *drop* support for the legacy XEmbed-based system tray protocol: http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/03/system-tray-in-plasma-next/ The only supported protocol (other than the KDE-specific plasmoid in the system tray feature) will be the new D-Bus based status notifier protocol: http://www.notmart.org/misc/statusnotifieritem/index.html See the above linked blog post for the rationale. To sum it up: * The new D-Bus-based status notifier protocol replacing it has been available for a while now. * Supporting the legacy protocol requires significant effort that the developers believe to be better spent elsewhere. * The legacy protocol relies on XEmbed and thus does not make any sense in a Wayland environment. Therefore, for your package (including and especially non-KDE packages!) to work properly under Plasma Next (which will replace the current KDE 4 Plasma workspace in Fedora somewhere around Fedora 22, though the exact Fedora release to introduce it has not been decided yet), it MUST support the new status notifier protocol in addition to or instead of the legacy XEmbed protocol. If your package uses: | then: --+- KDE 4 libraries OR | You do not have to do anything special. A patch | for Qt 4 to support the new protocol has been | developed by Ubuntu developers and will likely be | applied in the Fedora Qt 4 package soon. (As for | Qt 5, this is a drop-in replacement of the Qt class | requiring no application code changes.) --+- GTK+ (2 or 3) | You must use Canonical's libappindicator, which is | interoperable with the KDE implementation. Re: hierarchical comps groups proposal
Jens Petersen (peter...@redhat.com) said: (I'm not going to contribute actual work on this anyway, but) do we actually need that complexity? Later these could also be used for more advanced selection of groups in the installer and package GUI. My concern would be how deeply woven the current format is into our tools - it's yum, PK, DNF, anaconda, and all the tools built on top of it. It's exposed in kickstart. It's expected to be handled by older versions on upgrade, or even by mock when constructing arbitrary build roots. So care would need to be taken to figure out a good way to land this all at once, in a way that's backwards compatible enough to not break other things. Agreed, it seems like busy work to me that adds very little value to anyone familiar with Java packages. Wouldn't it be easier to change the whatever tool is generating this report to accommodate for this? If package invokes %mvn_build then don't expect there to be a %check section seems like a reasonable heuristic to me. It was my suggestion initially, and I think it's a decent idea just from a general 'legibility of spec to outside readers' perspective. From that perspective, though, it may reasonable to assume an outside reader knows about how tests are run in Javaland, especially if this is documented as a general thing somewhere in the Java packaging guidelines. I wasn't suggesting it as an idiotic, inflexible Policy Requirement, just as a thing to consider. -- Adam Williamson Fedora QA Community Monkey IRC: adamw | Twitter: AdamW_Fedora | XMPP: adamw AT happyassassin . net http://www.happyassassin.net -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
Re: Read this if your package includes a status notifier / system tray icon
Matthias Clasen wrote: Of course, you can also just stop using status icons and instead inform the user with notifications when something requires his immediate attention. That will work under any desktop. I should also warn that while notifications (Galago spec [1]) will *work* on most desktop environments, where work is defined as display *something*, the result is not necessarily what you expect. Implementations of the notification spec vary widely between the desktop environments, both in terms of features and in terms of lookfeel. In particular: 1. Many features are optional: http://www.galago-project.org/specs/notification/0.9/x408.html#command-get-capabilities and not supported by all implementations. In particular, some implementations (e.g. Plasma) allow action buttons/links on notifications, others (like, AFAIK, GNOME Shell and Unity) don't. So if you rely on actions on the notification, be warned that your program will not work properly everywhere. 2. The implementations of persistent notifications are also very different from desktop to desktop. They can be any of: * The persistence flag is ignored and an arbitrary default timeout is used. * The notification really persists until the user clicks it away. * The notification is first shown for an arbitrary default timeout, then persisted in some minimized form, which can also have a very different lookfeel from desktop to desktop. It can be a line with a Details button, it can be an icon, or any arbitrary thing, really. In particular, if you expect a persistent notification to be displayed in a similar way to a status notifier icon (system/message tray icon), that assumption will most likely be wrong on any non-GNOME desktop. 3. The implementations of transient (i.e. non-persistent) notifications are also very different from desktop to desktop: * The implementation may or may not keep a history of transient notifications. If you're out of luck, the user missed your notification and has no way to get it back. Be VERY careful of what you display in a transient notification. * The implementation may or may not allow the user to click the notification away before the timeout triggers. 4. The place the notifications are shown at also differs widely from implementation to implementation. It can be any of, at least: * a rectangle (one per notification) at the top of the screen (traditional implementations), * an entry in the popup of one icon in the system/message tray, the same icon for ALL notifications (Plasma, unless you remove that icon, forcing the fallback to the traditional rectangle-based implementation KNotify), * an entry in the popup of an application-specific icon in the system/message tray, one per application (AFAIK, how GNOME Shell does it), * theoretically, an icon (one per notification) in the system/message tray with a popup attached (not sure any implementation actually does that though). So, yes, the Galago notification spec can be a solution for some things (and yes, I'm aware that the GNOME HIG recommend replacing system tray icons with it), but it has its portability pitfalls, and in most desktop environments, it will lead to a VERY different user experience from a status notifier (system tray) icon (which may or may not be better, depending on the application). Currently Fedora ARM is supported on these devices through a Remix [1]. Allwinner kernel support is progressing rapidly upstream, and with this upstream kernel support it should be possible to support Allwinner SoCs in the official Fedora ARM images, without the need for a remix. == Detailed description == The linux-sunxi community is currently working hard to get Allwinner SoCs supported in the upstream kernel. A big part of this should land in the 3.14 kernel. The plan is to support Allwinner SoCs in headless mode for now, and carry patches for mmc, ahci and usb support for 1-2 kernel releases (until they land upstream). == Scope == Supporting Allwinnner SoCs ootb will require kernel and u-boot support. Kernel support is landing upstream and we will add patches to the Fedora kernel for 1-2 kernel releases to supplement this. u-boot support currently lives in a u- boot fork upstream, this fork is tracking / merging u-boot upstream and does intent to get sunxi support merged into the official u-boot packages, but there is no timeline for this atm. For u-boot we will create a separate u-boot-sunxi package, which can be dropped once u-boot support has been merged into u-boot upstream. Proposal owners: Will try to get as much kernel support upstream as possible, supplement with patches in the Fedora kernel package. Will create a u-boot- sunxi package with sunxi specific u-boot. Will look into adding a config tool to the sdcard images to easily select and install the correct u-boot and dtb, like the Allwinner Remix images have.
