EPEL Concerning request for libupnp addition

2014-03-29 Thread Aaron W. Hsu
I submitted a package request a few days ago for libupnp in the EPEL 7
Beta repository. I notice that other packages have made it into the
repository, but the libupnp library has not.

I presume there was a reason for the package not being added, but I
wanted to confirm whether the package will never be added to the
repository?

I made the request as recorded in the following page:

That is, on the epel7/Requests page I filed a request for the libupnp

Are you intending to maintain it? The epel6 branch is orphaned, so the
acls were copied from that branch and it has no owner.

If you want to maintain it you should be able to login to pkgdb and
take it. If you're not a packager, the correct way to request a package
is via a bugzilla request (or request here), the request page is for
package maintainers.

I use tcpwrappers through denyhosts, which write out /etc/hosts.deny.
Then openssh-server then uses the tcpwrappers to apply the rules (AFAIK).
When I investigated it, denyhosts was superior to fail2ban due to the
latter doing some crazy stuff with iptables that made me uncomfortable.
 Also, this:

 Installing:
  fail2ban noarch 0.9-0.3.git1f1a561.fc20fedora 261
 k
 Installing for dependencies:
  ed x86_64 1.10-1.fc20updates 72
 k
  gamin-python x86_64 0.1.10-15.fc20 fedora 34

 k
  systemd-python x86_64 208-15.fc20updates 80
 k

I agree that tcpwrappers should die in favour of firewalls.
Folks working on fail2ban are already considering integration
with firewalld, which seems like a great idea. Too bad fail2ban
is just as crusty as tcpwrappers. If we only had denyhosts that
 executed firewall-cmd...

What gives you the impression that fail2ban is crusty? It's being
actively developed upstream and integrates with firewalld now. Are
those particularly onerous dependencies?

and that is the problem / difference to tcpwrapper
it integrates in the firewall / iptables

so you have *not* additional security layer, you have
a single layer with a single point of failure and if
iptables for hwatever reason does not work as it should
you are lost

* bug in the rules failing iptables / forewalld to start
* SELinux failing iptables / forewalld to start
* bug in the iptables-rules render it useless (ACCEPT before REJECT/DROP)

if it ever comes to security you must not have a single protection layer
and some others appearing to exist but rely on that single layer makes
things even worser - /etc/hosts.deny works independent of SELinux or iptables

[Test-Announce] Proposal to CANCEL: 2014-03-31 Fedora QA Meeting

2014-03-29 Thread Adam Williamson
Welp, we're still in a pre-F21 holding pattern, and I'm not aware of any
specific Fedora.next stuff we need to discuss or any other important
agenda items. If anyone's aware of any please let us know, otherwise I'm
proposing we cancel the meeting on Monday.

If someone has a topic and would like to have the meeting, please do
reply to this, and/or send out a meeting announcement in the usual
format (see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:SOP_IRC_meeting_process );
otherwise, let's say the meeting's off. Thanks!

Re: Heads up: Mesa/LLVM rebase and OpenGTL retirement in F20

2014-03-29 Thread Jens Petersen
Hi Adam,

We'd like to update to Mesa 10.1 in Fedora 20, since the cycle is so
long before F21 and (among other goodies) it enables OpenGL 3.3 on some
newer Radeons. This implies rebasing LLVM 3.4, and that's where it gets
a little awkward: the OpenGTL package only works up to LLVM 3.3.

One concern from me is that ghc on ARM uses llvm as its compiler backend.

Thanks for letting me know! ghc doesn't show up as an llvm-libs
consumer on amd64 so I hadn't caught this.

Right - I think even on ARM only llvm would show up.

Is it possible to build the llvm backend on other arches, even if only
locally? That might at least allow me to shake out issues with the llvm
 code outside of actual codegen.

It is built by default at least on intel archs - just not used by default.
GHC ARM is kind of an anomaly using llvm by default - intel archs
and ppc 32bit have (good) native code generators and so don't use
the newer llvm backend in their compilation pipeline.

You can test ghc with llvm on intel archs with the -fllvm.
What you probably want to do is to change or patch ghc-rpm-macros
locally to pass the -fllvm flag to ghc via Haskell Cabal buildsystem.
I can send you a diff for that. Or you can tweak individual
Haskell packages to use llvm by adding:

%define cabal_configure_options --ghc-option=-fllvm

at the beginning of their %build sections.

(A more expensive way would be to rebuild all the current packages
in Rawhide which would cause them to be rebuild with llvm-3.4 on ARM,
but that is probably overkill and I hope we can move Rawhide ghc to 7.8
soon anyway)

Thanks, Jens
