I don't think this difference is a real issue.

This is more of a problem.

This is only a minor annoyance where a portable fallback exists (we can just 
ship the portable C/C++ version in /usr/lib and the SSE2 version in 
/usr/lib/sse2, as we are doing with Qt 5 QtDeclarative). The real problem is 
software which has no portable fallback at all, such as Chromium/QtWebEngine 
or Darktable. This completely screws not only non-SSE2 x86, but also all 
secondary architectures, and in some cases such as Darktable, even the 
primary architecture ARM. It is unfortunate that the number of such non-
portable software seems increasing lately. Portability to any and all CPU 
architectures used to be a big selling point for Free Software. These days, 
more and more projects seem happy to sacrifice this on the altar of 
performance. :-(

I think dropping support for non-SSE2 in all of Fedora would send entirely 
the wrong message to those upstreams and only contribute to the surge of 
non-portable software.

That said, we need a formal policy to deal with such software, which IMHO 
should be treated just like an ExcludeArch, except that you should not 
actually ExcludeArch the package as long as it supports SOME CPUs of that 
architecture. It should still be put on the relevant ExcludeArch tracker 
though, and if a fix/workaround exists, applying it should be required.

That would unfortunately decrease the usefulness of the i686 distribution a 
lot. Given that we want to push users of 64-bit-capable machines to the 
x86_64 version, it would leave basically only one generation of x86 machines 
for the i686 distribution: the Pentium 4 Northwood generation, including one 
or two generation(s) of AMD CPUs from the same time. Add to that some newish 
low-end Atoms where they removed x86_64 support "to save power" (actually to 
introduce an artificial market segmentation), no idea how popular those are. 
Everything else that has SSE2 also has 64-bit.

Unfortunately, that prerogative ("all 64-bit-capable machines should use 64-
bit binaries") is not universally shared by upstreams. For example, Qt sees 
the primary target of their 32-binaries as being modern machines that would 
also support x86_64, but where the user elected to use 32-bit for whatever 
reason, not old 32-bit-only machines as we see it. That is the primary 
reason for the different stance on non-SSE2 support. (That said, Qt, outside 
of QtWebEngine, does not actually REQUIRE SSE2. They just enable its use by 
default.) My argument that the default option ought to be the safe, portable 
one (non-SSE2) was rejected on the grounds of performance on what they think 
are the vast majority of machines using 32-bit Qt (whereas I argued that it 
was only really one generation, but as I wrote above, they have a completely 
different conception of the purpose of 32-bit binaries).

For what it's worth, I was against it. Using /usr/lib/sse2 as we do now 
works just fine as a solution to this problem. People without SSE2 at least 
get a distribution that works for them, and even Qt 5 builds (except the 
soon-to-be-packaged QtWebEngine module, sadly, unless/until something 
happens at its upstream to fix the V8 non-portability) that work, albeit 
slowly. LXQt should even work at an acceptable speed, given that they use 
QtWidgets for their UI, which does not need the QML 2 interpreter or JIT (so 
you don't get the non-JIT interpreter). And people with SSE2 get SSE2-
optimized .so binaries where it matters.

The only thing the duplication costs is some disk space, but that is the 
price of portability.

Unpredictable, unstable network interface names. (I presume they previously
changed from eth0 to p6p1, so that's already the SECOND breakage.) Hooray
for this "feature"!

In the old manual process, I just had to ask rel-eng and they'd blanket-OK 
freeze overrides for such packages (with the same arguments as yours, i.e., 
it cannot really break anything). These days, such freeze override requests 
get blanket-rejected instead (because it doesn't make much of a difference, 
so they don't see any reason to make exceptions to the processes).

laptops, but even some of them want Fedora installed as well.)  I
upgraded all the P4 desktops to 2GB RAM and with F22 using a non-3D WM
they work perfectly for student use.

So yes, I'm using 10 year old hardware with the latest Fedora and it
works great.  (I'll update them to F23 next time I'm there.)

server spin "maybe you are using the wrong operating system" and frankly 
for schools you typically use thin-cients one machine


with the agrumentations of this thread hardware manufactuers could stop 
develop new hardware capabilities if we wait 20 years to consider make 
them default - in the IT 10 years is virtually forever and *yes* capable 
hardware these days is cheap if you don't need that much performance

  But you should have.  Biosdevname what deprecated 3 years ago (with Fedora 19
or 20*), you should have migrated your rules to udev's naming scheme and
remove biosdevname.  This was quite long transition period, even longer 
than biosdevname usage, which was default between Fedora 15 and 19 (2 years).

"local update" used to work like that but it was requested to change this 
behaviour
and we made it consistent with "remote update" [1]. You probably want to
use `dnf install *.rpm` as Matthew pointed out.

FYI, NetworkManager has nothing to do with device naming at all.  So
disabling NM will do nothing to solve your problems with device names.

The p6p1 and em1 interface names come from ( Dells ) biosdevname not 
systemd and most likely the biosdevname component got removed on upgrade 
or superseded by other udev rules.


Arguably biosdevname component should have been obsoleted in F19 as a 
component and in Anaconda and Dracut when predictable network interface 
names got introduced with systemd in the distribution, to prevent these 
kind of surprises but here we are so "surprise" ...

Please don't do this. For MAC based name assignment you can use the ifcfg-*
files with HWADDR="".

There's now a f23 update, I have applied it to buildvm-01 to 09 and
re-added them. 

Please let me know if you see any build failures on these builders that
cannot be duplicated on others.

My usual decision tree on upgrades are:
1) Does upstream have a LTS edition?
2) Does the application upgrade itself cleanly?

If they have an LTS version, then I prefer that is what is in EPEL
versus other tools. If they do not and they only fix the latest
version then that usually means pushing to the newest semi long term
version.

The next point is if the application upgrades itself cleanly or not.
If an app can see the old configs and just go "ok I know that this
works this way etc etc." then it can be easily upgraded in EPEL. If it
doesn't then it comes down to how much pain will users and the
developer have if it stays on an old version.

Sometimes the answer is that the product just doesn't belong in EPEL
at all. Sometimes it means that you have to push to a newer version
with notification to various lists that the pain train is coming and
if you use the old version of the  package expect some problems.

could not release such major release for EPEL/RHEL 7.
Do you usually apply this rule strictly or sometimes you make an exception?
New version of Darktable will rely on GTK3, but concerning the remaining
libraries, there will not be a great change.

I'm merely observing what happened when I updated a bunch of servers
from F22 to F23.  I didn't intentionally install nor uninstall biosdevname
at any point.

I think that Chris described it very well. I'm quite skeptical that such a 
proposal would work in practice because of these reasons. It's quite demanding 
for us to just fix and test the outstanding blockers. Updating everything would 
mean:
a) retesting everything from scratch, and of course our testing covers only a 
few selected areas, we rely on many people from community to report blockers 
when they find them -- that takes time, not just a few days of testing crunch
b) potentially breaking anything, from boot to installer to desktop environment 
to apps

Of course if things break immediately after first system update, our users are 
not much better off. But at least the install medium booted and installer 
worked. The broken updates can be fixed, they are not baked into the install 
medium.

Maybe we could consider some middle approach, where things not in the critical 
path (not directly affecting the core system and installer) would not be 
affected by freeze. That shouldn't break much and would help many pre-release 
users and maintainers. It can still introduce new blockers, though, if those 
apps are e.g. on Live medium or are installed by Server by default (and then 
don't start). So we could ignore freeze just for packages not being on any 
install medium. But then I'm not sure how much that is helpful and it might be 
difficult to implement this in Bodhi.

A permission issue seems the most likely

since rsyslog with "imjournal" reads data from journald than it
sounds more like an systemd regression if it's a permission issue
(no SELinux is part of the game here)

Privileges are needed to read the journal. Please file a bug against
rsyslog, include the output of getfacl /var/log/journal /run/log/journal,
and other useful info, and I'm sure rsyslog maintainers will be able
to figure it out or redirect it back to systemd if necessary.
We're not going to solve it on the mailing list

Hi Gerard.

I started looking at it over the weekend and have now started looking
into getting it upgraded to the latest upstream release. Not a lot of
questions yet as I have found that it has so far been very well
packaged. If you have any ideas or pointers that I should keep in mind
then they are of course highly appreciated. I hope to have something up
fairly soon but it may take some time before it's all there.

with the agrumentations of this thread hardware manufactuers could stop
develop new hardware capabilities if we wait 20 years to consider make
them default - in the IT 10 years is virtually forever and *yes* capable
hardware these days is cheap if you don't need that much performance

"Cheap"?  I might be able to able to build a computer for $300, I 
haven't actually checked lately, that's what it was a few years ago. 
But for a computer lab?  Why would they want to try to come up with that 
much money when the existing computers work perfectly?

Unless and until hardware prices drop to zero, there will be users for whom
any cost is an insurmountable hurdle. And, there will remain users content
with existing capability who only wish to upgrade software in order to
maintain security and/or access to software demanded by their needs. Ordinary
users don't care when SSE3 was introduced. They just want to keep using what
ain't broke as long as possible. Many don't see justification for capability
of newer hardware causing software to demand that capability either,
particularly when it breaks arch portability or produces no more than a
modest, or no, detectable performance improvement, among them, me.

Nobody is saying that a newer computer won't save you money on the
power bill. What they have repeatedly stated and for some (first
world, perhaps?) reason you refuse to acknowledge, is that you can't
trade future power use for a new computer; you have to pay up front,
it's a sort of investment, that not everyone is affluent enough to
make. Not every person or institution can afford to get a new Phenom
or Xeon or whatever every year, or even every X years.
What exactly do you suggest these people do? Get LFS, Gentoo or Arch
and clear all incompatible flags? Or should they apply for a loan to
their bank, detailing the ROI from reduced power usage?

them in various places.  I said in all the schools I've been in, I've 
never seen any actually deployed.

should I have to use an old version of LibreOffice just because I'm

I would be very surprised if the power savings are really that much.  I 
will do a power check the next time I'm on site.  Besides that, 
electricity is cheap here so it would take a very long time to recoup 
the cost of new computers.

compilation terminated.

It relied on old svc_plugin which has been rid in 2013 year [5].

version freerdp into guacamole-server (at least until someone do
not willing port it) and update it for rest of Fedora?

I have not tried to do such bundle yet, but if no one argue I
could try do that with update freerdp and rebuild all other deps too.

work on the latest FreeRDP, they said they won't do it[1], I'm 
inclined to suggest you should go ahead and try that.
Sorry, but I do not very interesting in guacamole and it seams is not 
very trivial task.
I have asked FreeRDP to put out a release before[2], and they've just 
marked it for "2.0" milestone, whenever that happens...


Another option would be to set up the current FreeRDP library as a 
"compat" package that can be parallel installed with the latest 
FreeRDP from upstream, which might be possible with some finagling.
That may be an option. Do you think it is a better way? It will require 
new review, but still need only for single package.

Yes - and that frequently went wrong. That's precisely why we ditched
that process and came up with a better one, where the decision isn't
made on-the-fly by whoever happens to be reading the tickets in releng,
but is made according to an established process, by a sensible group of
stakeholders, with proper tracking and a paper trail.

Nothing gets blanket rejected. Each FE proposal is evaluated
individually on its merits.

Sorry, I missed that you were talking about packages not on the release
media. Yeah, those are kind of odd because you can argue them either
way: on the one hand pulling them in is unlikely to break anything, on
the other hand, what's the point of doing it? I'd usually still err on
the side of caution and leave them out, just in case they somehow break
the buildroot or do something else strange, if there's no actual
particular reason to push them.

And yes, there is an obvious technical problem - we don't actually have
the ability, right now, to know for sure exactly what packages are
somehow directly involved in building the media.
