Re: Video performance degradation in F24

Blog post here may be relevant:

Not sure exact hardware you are using, so may not be directly relevant.
If it is, there is a recent Fedora magazine article on applying kernel
patches.

Obsoletes: evas-generic-loaders <=  %{version}-%{release}

I don't think I set up the qa group, so I don't think I've actually
done it. But if I was, I'd probably start by dropping into #fedora-
admin and asking there.

but I don't see anything about asking for groups to be created.

we use the qa space there for hosting a few misc. things like
kickstarts referred to by test cases. I believe you can request the

Shared file storage for a Fedora-related project

2016-09-07 Thread Richard W.M. Jones
Do we (Fedora) offer any shared file storage for a Fedora-related
project? It's got to store a couple of gigabytes, and allow uploads
from FAS-authenticated users, perhaps using ssh/scp.

This is for storing the RISC-V RPMs.

(Apparently fedorahosted is .. dead?)

So this one seems to have happened a few times lately - always on i686,
GDM seems to hang/freeze after the user is selected, with the password
entry dialog only half faded in. Each time this happens there's a
kernel oops logged by ABRT, and it does seem to be at around the time
GDM is starting up:

not 100% sure if it's the cause, though (especially since we don't dump
the logs on success, so I can't see if the oops also happens when the
test succeeds).

This is an openQA typing error...it missed a character when typing at
the console. I don't really recall seeing this much if ever before the
last week or two, but it's happened a few times on both staging and
prod lately, possibly since I updated the workers to latest F24
recently (a qemu update was in that set). I'm twiddling a bit with qemu
CPU model settings on staging to see if this can mitigate this and some
other strange / random fails...

> ID: 32687 Test: x86_64 universal install_delete_partial
> URL: https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/32687

anaconda sudden crash at the hub. Again we've seen this before very
occasionally and never really tracked down a cause. Again I wonder if
twiddling CPU model may help.

> ID: 32691 Test: x86_64 universal install_lvmthin
> URL: https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/32691

anaconda hit some kind of timeout creating the LVM devices. I think
this is more just a slow worker than a clear anaconda bug, as the same
test passed on staging (multiple times - I keep re-running the tests on
staging lately to test stuff).

> ID: 32728 Test: i386 universal install_software_raid
> URL: https://openqa.fedoraproject.org/tests/32728

openQA typing error while typing root password. I have a big PR that's
aimed at fixing this kind of problem currently under review.

> ID: 32732 Test: i386 universal upgrade_desktop_32bit

Looks like https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1372854
again.

Lots of fun in openQA land lately...I'm working on trying to fix as
many of the cases where it fails for some non-bug reason as I can, plus
we have some strange crashes and things going on. I'll report all the
genuine bugs I can find.

Last week in the meeting [1], it was suggested that I get a side tag
from releng.
I filed a ticket [2], but there have been some hickups. But now it is working.
I am building now the new packages in the side tag, and will submit
them to testing hopefully in the next couple of days, and then make an
announcement.

All the best,

Broken dependencies: perl-Data-Alias

2016-09-07 Thread buildsys

perl-Data-Alias has broken dependencies in the rawhide tree:
On x86_64:

perl-Data-Alias-1.20-2.fc24.x86_64 requires perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.22.1)
On i386:
perl-Data-Alias-1.20-2.fc24.i686 requires libperl.so.5.22
perl-Data-Alias-1.20-2.fc24.i686 requires perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.22.1)
On armhfp:
perl-Data-Alias-1.20-2.fc24.armv7hl requires libperl.so.5.22
perl-Data-Alias-1.20-2.fc24.armv7hl requires perl(:MODULE_COMPAT_5.22.1)
Please resolve this as soon as possible.

2016-09-07 Thread Petr Viktorin

Hello!

Some time ago, at Flock, a couple of us had the idea to better promote
Fedora's Python story. Currently we have the "Python Features" section
on the Wiki [0][1], but the target audience there is the Python SIG
itself – people who work on the integration, not those who "just" use
Python. There's also the Python Brochure [2], which looks quite nice but
the content is ... well, not very useful for developers.

In my experience (with portingdb), a bit of HTML and CSS can go a long
way towards getting people interested. So we started writing down some
developer-focused Python talking points:

https://fedoralovespython.org/

And here's a preview with points that aren't ready for prime time yet:

https://fedoralovespython.org/__future__/

The points there are just headlines with links to more information –
mostly to the Fedora Developer Portal. A lot of the effort in the
"fedoralovespython.org project" should go into improving the Developer
Portal content [3][4][5]. The guides there can help people get started,
but should also help *us* check that getting started is as easy as it
can be :)

If you want to help out, the repo is public:
https://github.com/fedora-python/fedoralovespython.org

The page isn't publicly announced yet. Until it has some more content,
please don't market it to people who wouldn't interested in it as a
Python SIG project.

Self Introduction: Michal Schorm

2016-09-07 Thread Michal Schorm
Hello,
I'm C/C++ programmer and now package co-maintainer.
You will be able to spot me around databases, so far, MariaDB.

Also I'm into strategy games, either board, live or PC. I organise some
events for youth, and make IT stuff for it (form programming web apps to
soldering, whatever is "fun to hack"). There is also place for classic
guitar, D and so on :) .

Re: PEP: Distributing a Subset of the Standard Library

2016-09-07 Thread Petr Viktorin

On 09/06/2016 08:25 PM, Nick Coghlan wrote:

On 7 September 2016 at 02:41, Tomas Orsava wrote:

Hi!

I'm currently writing a PEP titled "Distributing a Subset of the Standard
Library" to standardize and hopefully improve the behavior of Python without
the its full standard library. This is relevant to Fedora, as we exclude
several standard library modules into separate optional packages (e.g.
python3-tkinter).

I have a draft of the first two sections: Motivation and Specification.
https://fedora-python.github.io/pep-drafts/pep-A.html

Very interesting, although I see a pragmatic problem with trying to
check for explicitly missing packages only after checking for the
standard library ones: the default import system doesn't make a clear
distinction as to which sys.path entries refer to the standard library
and which refer to other directories (like site-packages), so you
can't readily intercept processing after the standard library is
checked but before the rest of sys.path is processed.

Distinstion between stdlib and not-stdlib is not what's being solved here.

Within each sys.path entry, these suffixes are checked, in order:
>>> importlib.machinery.all_suffixes()
['.py', '.pyc', '.cpython-35m-x86_64-linux-gnu.so', '.abi3.so', '.so']

The proposal is to put '.missing.py' at the end, so if neither '.py' nor
'.so' is found in that particular directory (or before it on sys.path),
'.missing.py' raises ImportError.

The idea is to use it for stdlib directories. These come before
site-packages, so overrides in site-packages would be blocked (as they
should be, since they wouldn't be compatible with a "complete" install
of Python).

If someone finds a use case for putting '.missing.py' markers elsewhere,
all the power to them :)

However, sys.meta_path *does* let you explicitly block imports before
the default machinery is tried by raising ImportError from find_spec:
https://docs.python.org/3/reference/import.html#the-meta-path

Now, I'm making the assumption that what we need is a model whereby
the base install includes files that tells Python "these stdlib pieces
might be missing", and then the other packages can install files that
mean those "these pieces are missing" markers don't get processed.

The goal is mainly to provide good error messages when a piece of stdlib
is missing, i.e. ImportError("run dnf install python3-tkinter to get the
missing piece"). And to standardize how it's done, since CPython and
Debian need this too.

I hope we can answer the "what should be in stdlib?" question with
something more like dist info, complete with dependency information and
environment markers for things like Unix-only modules, and separate from
runtime.

One possible way to do that as a pre-import check injected into the
start of sys.meta_path would be to maintain a set of static
"module_name.optional" files in the standard library directory that
included:

- a relative file path to stat to indicate that the optional module is installed
- an import error message to raise if its not found

The proposal evolved from a similar idea; after that I realized an extra
"fallback file" in the stdlib directory is enough.

I have created a proposal for the Reference Implementation which you can
find here:

https://github.com/torsava/cpython/pull/1

It works by checking for the .missing.py files in every directory on the
sys.path. Therefore the packager can put it into any directory they use
for stdlib, and it will work (that directory of course already is on the
sys.path). And because it checks for the .missing.py file only after it
tried every other possible file extension in each directory, it won't
shadow actually installed stdlib modules.

One possible way to do that as a pre-import check injected into the
start of sys.meta_path would be to maintain a set of static
"module_name.optional" files in the standard library directory that
included:

- a relative file path to stat to indicate that the optional module is installed
- an import error message to raise if its not found

If the new hook either didn't see an optional module entry, or if it
checked and the file path was present, it would allow the import to
continue as normal. However, if it found the optional declaration file
and the file path missing, it would raise ImportError with the given
message.

CPython by default would provide optional declarations for the modules
that are optional in the upstream build process, then downstreams like
Fedora may add more for things like tkinter, idlelib, and the test
suite.

The downside of this approach is that it does mean the initial import
of optional modules would be a touch slower (since the file path to
stat and the error message would need to be read from file), whereas
the version in the draft PEP has the virtue of having no impact on
import time for modules that are available, even when starting from a
completely cold sys.modules cache.

So if we did want to enable the draft proposal in the PEP, we'd need
to look at proposing a special directory to hold the "missing" markers
that was always placed just after the standard library directory on
sys.path, and then defining a custom path_hook to process it:
https://docs.python.org/3/reference/import.html#path-entry-finders

Cheers,
Nick.
