One more caveat: make sure that the ENVR (epoch, name, version and release)
of the new libnfsidmap package sorts higher than that of the former
standalone package, or else it won't act as a replacement.

As Hedayat Vatankhah pointed out, if the package is called libnfsidmap-
devel, it does not actually need to Provide itself. So the
Obsoletes/Provides should go away entirely.

Obsoletes/Provides are needed if the BINARY package name changes. E.g., if
we had:
%package libnfsidmap-devel
(without the -n), generating a nfs-utils-libnfsidmap-devel subpackage, THEN
it would make sense to Obsolete and Provide libnfsidmap-devel in that
subpackage (NOT in the main package). But since %package -n is used to
recreate the same old package name, there is nothing to Obsolete and Provide
to begin with.

Another sad thing is that there is still a lot of code in the plugin blob
that does not really need to be. The JBIG patents expired years ago, but all
the algorithms depending on JBIG are still hidden in the plugin. There seems
to be no move from HP on open-sourcing any of the algorithms in the plugin,
no matter what made them end up in there in the first place. Some of those
codecs (IIRC, most or all of the printing ones, but not many of the scanning
ones) have third-party reverse-engineered drivers available, but they are
not integrated in the HPLIP infrastructure. I also get the feeling that more
and more of the current models need the plugin.

This is really sad, because HPLIP was originally a genuine contribution to
Free Software (a high-quality manufacturer driver actually released as pure
Free Software, the plugin did not even exist in the initial versions), but
unfortunately, it is degenerating more and more into a freewashing tool for
proprietary driver blobs. The codec algorithms that use the plugin are
entirely implemented inside the plugin (not just the patented parts), the
"Free driver" HPLIP is just a dispatching wrapper around the blob for those
algorithms.

planning to orphan 4 packages

I am planning to orphan the four packages (list below) in a few days. If
anyone is interested in maintaining these packages, I can make you the
person admin instead of orphaning.

These are the packages -

autodocksuite
gaussum
qmforge
webcpp

These packages have very little to no development upstream.

Network interface regression on F26 VM after 4.13/4.12 kernel update

2017-10-26 Thread Philip Prindeville
I was running F25 (4.10) on a VM inside KVM/Qemu/libvirt on CentOS 7.3
(updated).

Then I upgraded it (via dnf system-upgrade) to F26 and 4.11 and it was still
working well, as I recall.

Then I upgraded it again to 4.13 and now I’m seeing flakiness in the network:
the NIC will randomly come up and go down.

Right now I’m seeing:

$ ip link show

common location of spec files in upstream sources

2017-10-26 Thread R P Herrold

From a survey of about 1700 .spec files in my current working
collection, the overwhelmingly common place to ** install **
such is in a:
%doc
directory

Most simply place them in the top directory, at a depth even
with where a V[ersioned] tarball is unpacked by the %setup
stanza.  Then
rpmbuild -ta (package-V).tgz

can un-gzip and find it there and will build to order in
chained automation. I see in my local archive:
bzr/kicad/RCS/README,v:rpmbuild -ta ${PROJECT}-${YMD}.tar.gz && {

which does this. The R[elease] value gets tacked on during
the build process

This is most sensible (I have much automation for
automatic VCS CO, .spec file, and then tarballgenerators,
which substitute in various variable substitutions). See,
eg.,
ftp://ftp.owlriver.com/pub/mirror/ORC/dl/README

of which I was tracking VCS dalies and testing, before it
moved into Fedora

Others use this approaches similar to this as well -- I see
several
'%{_package}.spec.in'
files by others to that effect as well. See, eg.,
krb5-auth-dialog and GeoIP

Here are some ideas. The following projects are either strongly related
to Fedora or widely used in the project. These are just some projects I
had cloned in my personal PC for some reason, so, randomly picked:

- koji, copr-cli, FedoraReview, python-bugzilla ship spec files in the project
root directory
- pagure and mote ship spec files under the 'files/' directory
- mock ships it as 'mock/mock.spec'
- ansible ships it as 'packaging/rpm/ansible.spec'
- gofed ships it as 'hacking/gofed.spec'
- RPM does not ship a .spec file in the rpm repository (maybe somewhere
  else?)

As mentioned here, Debian ships it under the debian directory in the
root dir because that's how their tooling searches for packaging data.
As pointed above, it seems that there are no default paths to ship the
spec file. Just let packagers know it exists. When packaging for
different distros, chances are the spec file will need changes anyway.

I've seen packaging/{debian,rpm}, packaging/, dist/, rpm/, as well as
it being a top-level file.

The projects I've worked on typically use dist/.spec.

For example: https://github.com/datto/dattobd/blob/master/dist/dattobd.spec

Projects from SUSE typically use package/.spec

For example:
https://github.com/openSUSE/libsolv/blob/master/package/libsolv.spec.in

Hi,

For upstream projects that provide spec files in their
repositories, do y'all tend to see a common location for the spec
files? Like dist/.spec or rpm/.spec, etc. My
organization is trying to standardize on a location for the
software we maintain, and it would be better to use something that
many in the open source community also use.

Helllo I have not seem many upstream projects shiping rpm files in
theirs sources, but I have seem  many with a /debian directory with
all the debian packaging stuff and some others with a /PKGBUILD dwith
file used for the  Arch Linux´s AUR, since rpm is not only for Fedora
I think /rpm should be a good place to ship the rpm file.

Or

rpm/SPECS

to match where rpmbuild would look for it

plan to update F27 to systemd-235 cancelled

2017-10-26 Thread Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek
Hi,

two weeks ago I signalled a plan to update systemd to v235 in F27.
I have now given up on this.

Reasons: there were some issues in the implementation of the
DynamicUser feature. Handling this took some time and F27 entered the
final freeze, and it seems to late to do update the version now.

I backported a bunch of patches (~80) for F27, but only simple fixes,
so any new functionality and nontrivial fixes are excluded. One
exception is the new crypttab _netdev functionality required by
clevis.

I'll be doing straightforward rebuilds of rawhide systemd for F27 and
F26 in copr:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/zbyszek/systemd/package/systemd/
This can be used to test the new features, e.g. NRestarts= and
IPAccounting=.

Updates are now in updates-testing for all releases, with varying numbers
of changes. Please test and give karma.

I think your best bet is to generate a temporary preset override
in %pre. Something along the lines of (completely untested):

%pre -n python2-fedmsg
if $1 == 1; then # initial install
   for i in fedmsg-hub.service fedmsg-relay.service fedmsg-irc.service
fedmsg-gateway.service; do
   if systemctl is-enabled -q $i 2>/dev/null; then
   echo "enable $i" >>/run/systemd/system-preset/fedmsg.preset
   fi
   done
fi

Another note: you can coalesce all %systemd_* macro invocations to put
multiple units on the same line. It's a bit more compact and faster.

common location of spec files in upstream sources

2017-10-26 Thread Mátyás Selmeci

Hi,

For upstream projects that provide spec files in their repositories, do
y'all tend to see a common location for the spec files? Like
dist/.spec or rpm/.spec, etc. My organization is trying to
standardize on a location for the software we maintain, and it would be
better to use something that many in the open source community also use.

Thanks,
-Mat

Move this line under

%package -n libnfsidmap-devel

And you should get a clean update path

Hi,

That's probably due to the

Provides: libnfsidmap%{_isa} = %{epoch}:%{version}-%{release}
Provides: libnfsidmap-devel%{_isa} = %{epoch}:%{version}-%{release}

(not the energy to actually check)

From:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrade_paths_%E2%80%94_renaming_or_splitting_packages
(did I actually write this some years ago? I had forgotten about it)

I can try to build out a RHEL7 system with 1.3 and see if I can reproduce it
there with my data set as well. I'll let you know what I find.

I created issue 49429 with more or less the same details as below.

Its up and running now, so if you don't mind please file a ticket.

The case I've discovered is as follows:

I have a search which returns about 28,000 entries. The system which generates
this search does a paged search with 1000 results per page. I can replicate
the behavior with a command line ldap search like the following

# ldapsearch -H ldaps://servername:636 -D
'uid=binddn,ou=specials,dc=cmu,dc=edu' -x -W -E pr=1000/noprompt
"(&(isMemberOf=cn=GroupName,ou=groups,dc=cmu,dc=edu)(guid=*)(objectClass=inetorgperson))",

As soon as the first 1000 entries are returned, and the search requests the
second page, all other searches being done to the same server block.

Specifically, I run a loop doing a trivial search:

# while true; do time ldapsearch -h servername -x uid=jeaton; sleep 1 ; done

This search will return in a fraction of a second:

real 0m0.031s
user 0m0.009s
sys 0m0.006s

until the server starts working on the second (and any subsequent pages). When
that happens, the trivial search blocks for the entire time that it takes to
generate the 1000 entries for the page:

real 0m45.907s
user 0m0.009s
sys 0m0.008s

everything looks good in the access log at first:

Hello,

will be rolled into the nfs-utils package.
Meaning nfs-utils will be install libnfsidmap

The libnfsidmap name will stay the same
so I'm hoping there will not be any problems.
Just the owner of the library will change.

Questions:

1) What do I do with the old libnfsidmap package
since it will no longer be updated.

2) How do I notify the packages that are dependent
on the libnfsidmap package to change their dependency
to nfs-utils

3) Will this cause any build problems now that nfs-utils
will be installing the new library?

4) What am I missing?

First of all... thanks for all the input!!! Its definitely appreciated!!

Here is what has been added to the nfs-utils spec file.

Provides: libnfsidmap%{_isa} = %{epoch}:%{version}-%{release}
Provides: libnfsidmap-devel%{_isa} = %{epoch}:%{version}-%{release}

Obsoletes: libnfsidmap < %{version}-%{release}
Obsoletes: libnfsidmap-devel < %{version}-%{release}
As you are actually providing libnfsidmap & libnfsidmap-devel RPM
packages, I think there is no need for the above. They were needed if
you didn't put libnfsidmap in a separate RPM.
In your case, you are actually providing the same RPM packages, just
from a different SRPM. So in the RPM repository, almost nothing is
changed (except the name of SRPM which has produced those RPM packages,
which has no effect on dependency resolution).

%package -n libnfsidmap
Summary: NFSv4 User and Group ID Mapping Library
Obsoletes: nfs-utils-lib
Group: System Environment/Libraries
BuildRoot: %{_tmppath}/%{name}-%{version}-root
BuildRequires: pkgconfig, openldap-devel
BuildRequires: automake, libtool
Requires(postun): /sbin/ldconfig
Requires(pre): /sbin/ldconfig
Requires: openldap

%description -n libnfsidmap
Library that handles mapping between names and ids for NFSv4.

%package -n libnfsidmap-devel

Group: Development/Libraries
Requires: libnfsidmap = %{version}-%{release}
Requires: pkgconfig

%description -n libnfsidmap-devel
This package includes header files and libraries necessary for
developing programs which use the libnfsidmap library.

A couple things are still not right
1) when I do the update of nfs-utils, libnfsidmap and libnfsidmap-devel
nfs-utils and libnfsidmap are installed correctly but the
libnfsidmap-devel is "replaced" by nfs-utils:

Upgrading:
  libnfsidmap   x86_64   1:2.2.1-0.fc28 @commandline   102 k
  nfs-utils x86_64   1:2.2.1-0.fc28 @commandline   413 k
  replacing  libnfsidmap-devel.x86_64 0.27-3.fc27

which basically ends up remove it.
Because you've said that nfs-utils package provides libnfsidmap-devel
too. Actually, I would expect it to also remove libnfsidmap!

Regards,
Hedayat

2) 'dnf downgrade nfs-utils' I'm assuming should also downgrade libnfsidmap
 as well... but only nfs-utils is downgraded. BUT... if a
 'dnf downgrade libnfsidmap' is done, both libnfsidmap and nfs-utils are
downgraded.

3) there no libnfsidmap-debuginfo rpm being built.

any ideas??

steved.

But packages shouldn't be creating certificates in %post scriptlets. At
least those which start daemons (which I think would be most of them).
That should be done when the daemon starts for the first time using
sscg.  See

Its up and running now, so if you don't mind please file a ticket.

But... 1.2.11 is no longer under development - meaning no new releases
are being done.

So we will see if we can reproduce this on 1.3.6, and fix it there if
it's still an issue.

Tickets of interest between 1.2.11.15-91  <-->   1.2.11.15-50:

1.2.11.15-75 --- Paged results search returns the blank list of entries
(DS 48808)
1.2.11.15-71 --- SimplePagedResults -- in the search error case, simple
paged results slot was not released (DS 48375)
1.2.11.15-69 --- SimplePagedResults -- abandon could happen between the
abandon check and sending results -- Fixing a regression introduced in
1.2.11.15-68 (DS 48338)
1.2.11.15-68 --- SimplePagedResults -- abandon could happen between the
abandon check and sending results (DS 48338)
1.2.11.15-64 --- pagedresults - when timed out, search results could
have been already freed. (DS 48299)

F28 System Wide Change: NSS Default File Format SQL

2017-10-26 Thread Jan Kurik
= System Wide Change: NSS Default File Format SQL =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/NSSDefaultFileFormatSql

Change owner(s):
* Kai Engert

Change the NSS library default to use the sqlite based data storage,
when applications don't specify their preferred storage file format.

== Detailed Description ==

Applications that use the NSS library often use a database for storage
of keys, certificates and trust. NSS supports two different file
formats, one called DBM (based on berkeley DB files) and another one
called SQL (based on sqlite DB files).

Today's default file format used by NSS, used when applications omit
the type parameter, is the older DBM file format, which forbids
parallel access to the storage. The suggestion is to change the
default file format to SQL, which allows parallel access to the
storage.

Applications, or users using the NSS command line utilities, often
provide the database storage location using a simple directory path
parameter. Some might not be aware, or forget, that the parameter can
be prefixed with a type modifier, either "dbm:" or "sql:".

As a result, when not providing this parameter, the file format used
will be the fragile DBM file format. This is particuarly problematic,
if a user attempts to modify the NSS storage using command line tools,
while another process, such as a daemon, is running concurrently,
which also accesses the same database in the DBM file format. This
often results in corrupted database storage, which cannot be
recovered.

By changing the default, all applications that currently use the DBM
file format, will automatically be migrated to the SQL file format.
NSS has the ability to discover if a storage location (a directory)
contains the DBM file format. If configured to use the modern SQL
format, NSS will automatically perform a one-time conversion from the
DBM to the SQL format.

The same applies to the NSS command line utilities. If the NSS library
default is changed to SQL, the NSS tools will also trigger the
one-time conversion, or access the already converted files.

== Scope ==

* Proposal owners:
A small downstream patch needs to be applied to the NSS library
package, which changes the library default.

* Other developers:
It's up to developers of NSS applications, if they accept the new
default and an automatic conversion, or if they prefer to continue to
use the classic DBM storage format. Although not recommended,
developers can easily do so, by adding a "dbm:" prefix to the storage
parameter they provide to NSS at NSS library initialization time.

* Release engineering: [1]
No help should be necessary. No mass rebuild necessary.

* Policies and guidelines: N/A

* Trademark approval: N/A

[389-devel] bug in 389-ds-base-1.2.11.15-91.el6_9.x86_64 with large paged searches

2017-10-26 Thread Jeffrey Eaton
I recently updated to 389-ds-base-1.2.11.15-91.el6_9.x86_64 (from
389-ds-base-1.2.11.15-50.el6_6.x86_64) and have uncovered a bug with large
paged searches blocking all other searches on the server. I tried to access
https://pagure.io/389-ds-base/new_issue to open a bug there, but its giving a
500 error.

The case I've discovered is as follows:

I have a search which returns about 28,000 entries. The system which generates
this search does a paged search with 1000 results per page. I can replicate
the behavior with a command line ldap search like the following

# ldapsearch -H ldaps://servername:636 -D
'uid=binddn,ou=specials,dc=cmu,dc=edu' -x -W -E pr=1000/noprompt

There's no FESCo ticket on that. Mind opening one and I'll add it to the
agenda?

Well, you don't need to do that. You can have nfs-utils do a virtual
Provides: on libnfsidmap. Also, if they are using automatic requires, those
should Just Work, since they are now comig from a new package.

You will want to make sure to add `Obsoletes: libnfsidmap <=
` to nfs-utils.

BTW we have Copr repository with 45 000 ruby gems packaged as RPM:

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/rubygems/rubygems/

They are automatically generated. So it may or not work for you. Nevertheless
it is good starting point.

It is also important to provide the archful name, so in addition to the above:

Provides: libnfsidmap%{_isa} = %{version}-%{release}

libnfsidmap currently Provides nfs-utils-lib, so might want to copy
that over too. If it's very old, you can drop it. Just make sure
nothing in the distro still uses it.

Also, libnfsidmap-devel must be similarly obsoleted. It Provides:
libnfsidmap-devel
libnfsidmap-devel%{_isa}
pkgconfig(libnfsidmap)

You can include in the nfs-utils spec something like this:

Provides: libnfsidmap = %{version}-%{release}

Packaging Question

2017-10-26 Thread Steve Dickson
Hello,

In an upcoming release the libnfsdimap library
will be rolled into the nfs-utils package.
Meaning nfs-utils will be install libnfsidmap
instead of the libnfsidmap package.

4) What am I missing?

tia,

steved.

Issue is that plugin is proprietary (owned by HP) and it contains
precompiled data, so it cannot be packaged.  Upstream doesn't reply on
most issues. But this plugin is needed by group of printers, so there
needs to be a way to download it (if we want to support these printers
in Fedora).

So this was caused by an update of fedpkg available in updates-testing. See:
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2017-9cac2b8b4a
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1188634

Downgrading fedpkg should fix the problem.

Not so much luck, as a sufficiently good process mostly being
followed ['The more a well designed process is followed and
tweaked with improvements, the more lucky one becomes' ;) ]

The post partially quoted above points up another benefit from
the virtue of 'packaging everything' as discussed in the
recent 'packaging ruby dependencies' thread. When an upstream
'goes wonky' for whatever reason (there was a similar example
in the Node.js ecosystem where a maintainer took down a minor
but critical dependency, and 'broke world'), one can 'fall
back' to the last SRPMS (and other VCS backups as well), and
recover

Without packaged sources, and the discipline of sub-dependency
determination and solution, and the 'four freedoms' checking
goodness of a formal 'licenses review', and the additional set
of eyes cross-checking work, one loses so much

Changing signature will not help. The main problem is that implementation of
function is not really portable

>sds_siphash13(const void *src, size_t src_sz, const char key[16])
>{
>const uint64_t *_key = (uint64_t *)key;
^^^
This cast is portable only in case of "((intptr_t)key) % sizeof(uint64_t)
== 0"
It is not a problem in intel/amd but it is not portable
>uint64_t k0 = _le64toh(_key[0]);

>uint64_t b = (uint64_t)src_sz << 56;
>const uint64_t *in = (uint64_t *)src;
  ^^^
and the same situation is here

This is usually not the problem is you directly pass pointer returned by
malloc. But it is not the case on many places.

e.g.
here is an usage on function in libsds

sh$ git grep sds_siphash13 src/libsds/
src/libsds/external/csiphash/csiphash.c:sds_siphash13(const void *src, size_t
src_sz, const char key[16])
src/libsds/include/sds.h: * sds_siphash13 provides an implementation of the
siphash algorithm for use in
src/libsds/include/sds.h:uint64_t sds_siphash13(const void *src, size_t src_sz,
const char key[16]);
src/libsds/sds/ht/op.c:uint64_t hashout = sds_siphash13(key,
ht_ptr->key_size_fn(key), ht_ptr->hkey);
src/libsds/sds/ht/op.c:uint64_t ex_hashout =
sds_siphash13(slot->slot.value->key,
ht_ptr->key_size_fn(slot->slot.value->key), ht_ptr->hkey);
src/libsds/sds/ht/op.c:uint64_t hashout = sds_siphash13(key,
ht_ptr->key_size_fn(key), ht_ptr->hkey);
src/libsds/sds/ht/op.c:uint64_t hashout = sds_siphash13(key,
ht_ptr->key_size_fn(key), ht_ptr->hkey);
src/libsds/test/test_sds_csiphash.c:hashout = sds_siphash13(,
sizeof(uint64_t), key);
src/libsds/test/test_sds_csiphash.c:hashout = sds_siphash13(test, 4, key);

ht_ptr->hkey is used on many places and it is not aligned to 64 bites.

Here is a definition of structure
   typedef struct _sds_ht_instance
   {
   uint32_t checksum;
   char hkey[16];
   sds_ht_node *root;
   int64_t (*key_cmp_fn)(void *a, void *b);
   uint64_t (*key_size_fn)(void *key);
   void *(*key_dup_fn)(void *key);
   void (*key_free_fn)(void *key);
   void *(*value_dup_fn)(void *value);
   void (*value_free_fn)(void *value);
   } sds_ht_instance;

This structure is always created with malloc. So the beginning of structure is
aligned. "ht_ptr = sds_calloc(sizeof(sds_ht_instance));"
But it is very possible that hkey will not be aligned to 64 bits unless
compiler adds some padding between "checksum" and "hkey".
You might do the trick to change order of members in structure which would
solve problem here. But it still would not solve problem with improperly
aligned input in sds_siphash13.

let say we have following code
int main(void)
{
char *input = strdup("lorem impsum");
char *key = calloc(1, 16);

uint64_t temp;

/* this version would not crash) */
temp = sds_siphash13(input, strlen(input), key);

/* but this version will crash */
temp = sds_siphash13(input + 1, strlen(input +1), key);

return 0;
}

It is really difficult to rely on proper alignment of input.
In theory you could have assert in code which would catch it
also in x86_64 architecture. But it is not nice solution.

The only portable way is to use memcpy to copy data from
array of char to variable/array of uint64_t.

BTW recently I read nice article and it can crash even on x86_64
in case of vector operations. Which compilers try to use as part of
optimisations.
https://pzemtsov.github.io/2016/11/06/bug-story-alignment-on-x86.html

And as you can see in article usage of memcpy is not so bad especially
if compiler uses builtin instead of procedure call.

HTH and sorry for late reply.

hp-plugin doesn't work in hplip-3.17.9 - move to 3.17.10 if you need

2017-10-26 Thread Zdenek Dohnal
Hi,

HP changed website this week, which has consequences for getting hp
proprietary plugin - it cannot be downloaded anymore for hplip-3.17.9,
which is in stable Fedoras (f25 and f26) and Fedora 27. It means anyone,
who has printer, which needs this proprietary plugin (there is the list,
where some of them are mentioned
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/binaary_plugin.html
), isn't able to install this printer.

Tool hp-plugin (tool which downloads this plugin) tries two url for
download - first, the openprinting.org and then hplipopensource.com.
Issue is that hplipopensource.com url doesn't work anymore after moving
to new HP website and plugin isn't on openprinting.org. I reported it to
upstream several times about uploading plugin into openprinting.org
website, but without answer (probably because it was available on
hplipopensource.com). That's the situation for hplip-3.17.9.

Luckily, there is hplip-3.17.10 in updates-testing repository, which has
plugin on openprinting.org. So if someone now needs to install printer,
which needs proprietary plugin, please update hplip to 3.17.10 from
updates-testing repository. If you have such printer installed already
or your printer doesn't need proprietary plugin, this issue shouldn't
have impact on you.

I'm sorry for inconvenience (this issue is already reported
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1727628 ).

Best regards,

Zdenek

Although I'm not on FESCo my advice here is to treat it as a fresh
change and for the large part ignore the missed target of F27.

You're fortunate that Change is already written up so you're spared
redoing that effort and also that the contingency is known, and in
this case tested.

If steps are skipped then it risks other Changes in future adopting
the "we tried it for N-1 and it was approved in N-1 so we're good"
causing problems... and besides risks to be aware of will change from
release to release.

If we follow process each time, whether it was a missed target
previously or not, we ensure that there are no slip ups with missing
documentation or knock on effects that have not been considered.

In general if you have to ask the question "Will this be sufficient to
restart the change acceptance process for Fedora Next?" then
realistically the only suitable response is "check with FESCo, which
you'd have to do with any Change anyway".

I can certainly relate to that, I have need of another cloud native computing
foundation project, prometheus, and what's in Fedora is awful (obsolete,
incomplete, bitrotten specs, requiring a huge number of dep packaging or
repackaging, packaging guideline updates and so on).

All I can say is someone needs to go first. Red Hat has IMHO missed the boat by
focusing on paying devs to build its own cloud offering, with the usual dev
bias of NIH-ism, unicorn-thinking, rewriting the world, building dev envs, dev
containers, and not thinking about the practical aspects of making the result
available in production or making users and ops happy in general.

And now there is a need to play catch-up, to make non Red Hat originated apps
available in the software library, in the format Red Hat customers and Fedora
contributors expect (which is *not* all the variations on custom containers
which have constituted 90% of the cloud noise on Fedora lists in the past
years). And that is a huge PITA because of past under-investments that need to
be compensated first.

As a Red Hat customer, I certainly do not see the point of financing efforts
that end up with me needing to pull third party code from github and rebuild
container deployment images myself. I can do all that without paying Red Hat a
penny, there is no lack of custom container variations on the marker.

As a Fedora contributor, I do not see the point of contributing packaging apps
in a format that will help Red Hat earn money if Red Hat does not contribute a
minimum to packaging apps in Fedora. That would be Debian with the constrains
of a dominant sponsor and without the dominant sponsor earning its central
place. I will do so for a while in the hope some sanity prevails, and switch
partners if it does not.

Likewise, kuddos for buying ansible tower, for releasing awx, but why is it not
in Fedora? Open but not ready to use in practice without is open core-ism,
I may as well standardise on saltstack and migrate to saltstack paying support
when my use gets critical enough.

The cloud market is entering a consolidation phase, it's the end of paying devs
to do whatever they want in the hope of earning the jackpot, whoever focuses on
grim practical tedious necessary aspects first will leave others actors in the
dust.

Regards,

Flock Bidding still open - don't forget

2017-10-26 Thread Brian Exelbierd
Flock bidding for Europe is still open. The new easier bid process is
described here:

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/flock-2018-bidding-open/

The process is lightweight and designed to help you move forward with a
proposal quickly. You start by answering some basic questions about
what you're suggesting.

We are extending the deadline to November 12, 2017. Part of the
selection committee have travel commitments at the beginning of November
so it is silly to have a deadline that will result in everything waiting
two weeks anyway.

Use these extra days to get a bid in, Flock is coming to Europe and we
are ready to pick a place and get started :).

major elpa update (API and ABI incompatible)

2017-10-26 Thread Dominik 'Rathann' Mierzejewski
Hi,
I intend to update elpa to the latest version (2017.05.002) in rawhide.
This is a major change from currently packaged 2015.11.001. It comes
with a new API and is ABI-incompatible. Old APIs, especially some
private functions which were exposed but not meant for public use by
upstream have been removed. New API is described in USERS_GUIDE.md [1].

There are two consumers of elpa in Fedora: cp2k and openmx. I put
the maintainers (myself included) of these packages on Cc in this
announcement.

While cp2k already supports this new elpa, openmx does not. There
was some discussion about this in bug #1325933 [2] and upstream [3],
but upstream seems to be reluctant to change anything, so in worst
case scenario, openmx can switch to using the old bundled copy of
elpa.

Here is my quick and dirty script. It's mostly missing a command to autobump
release in specs on rebuild. Used both on EL7 and rawhide build hosts with
minor adaptations.

You need a /srv/rpm directory writable by the mock user, and for each build env
you target:
1. a build env id (mywork-rawhide for example)
2. a subdir in /srv/rpm with the same name (/srv/rpm/mywork-rawhide)
3. a mock conf with the same name (/etc/mock/mywork-rawhide.cfg, usually
derived from the default mock conf of the build target)
4. config_opts['root'] = 'mywork-rawhide' in this conf file
5. Among the configured repos in this conf file :

[mywork-rawhide]
name= My private build repo for rawhide
baseurl=file:///srv/rpm/mywork-rawhide/
priority=1
gpgchek=0
metadata_expire=1s

(you want to sign the packages once they pass QA, not before)

Good practice is to wipe everything in the local repo once in a while and
rebuild the whole package stack from specs to check everything still works
together.

Regards,

It seems that schedule is just copied over the weeks... I would like to
discuss:

#topic #720 Easy way of changing/removing shebangs
.fpc 720
https://pagure.io/packaging-committee/issue/720

#topic #559 Ban use of rich dependencies
.fpc 559
https://pagure.io/packaging-committee/issue/559

(... All this means that, as of today, Infra should be all good to
handle Rich Dependencies.)

#topic #705 Rust Packaging Guidelines
.fpc 705
https://pagure.io/packaging-committee/issue/705

(it was already accepted by FPC, but we were stuck on banned usage of
rich deps, now it is time to get it in)

Re: packaging ruby dependencies

2017-10-26 Thread Tom Hughes

On 26/10/17 04:52, Nico Kadel-Garcia wrote:

I've done the "build the dependency chain" work myself with various
projects I publish to github. The current problem I have is that for
recent Fedora releases, I've not worked out how to add the local yum
or dnf repositories to the "mock" configurations I've been working
with for building the full chain locally, and being able to build them
in mock. Does anyone have hooks or examples of how to do so for recent
Fedora releases?

Just edit the relevant config file in /etc/mock and add it? So for
example my local repo for f27 is defined by adding this block just
before the """ marker at the end:

[compton]
name=compton
baseurl=http://packages.compton.nu/fedora-27/x86_64/
metadata_expire=30

Personally what I actually do is to create
/etc/mock/compton-27-x86_64.cfg as a copy of
/etc/mock/fedora-27-x86_64.cfg with that added to avoid conflicts on
mock upgrades and then use the appropriate switch to mock/fedpkg to
select that config.
