They have begin to use it in f34 with gnome 40. It's always a long process to
migrate everything. The same thing happen with gtk2->gtk3 and qt4->qt5 a few
years ago.

In F33, I don't even have gtk4 installed, so nothing in the default
workstation (or anything else I've added) uses it yet.

The command "dnf repoquery --requires gnome-shell" say it depend on both gtk3
and gtk4. Some component need both for now it seem. Maybe gnome folks have a
list of bugs you can participate in there gitlab.

Re: sudo dnf remove gtk3

2021-05-22 Thread Rémi Lauzier via devel
gnome-shell is a protected package and depend on gtk3 so it can't be remove
unless you remove it from the protected list in /etc/dnf/protected.d/, but
doing so will remove your desktop. Do it only if you love destroying your
system.

So what I'm hearing is that Fedora will soon stop working with my
printer, because if there isn't enough manpower to even keep existing
printer drivers in place, then who is going to write a bunch of pappls
for not-quite-brand-new printers?

And if the bright and shiny future is that USB printers look just like
network printers, and network printers just show up without any
installation, then I'm starting to wonder how I will know whether I'm
sending my sensitive document to my USB printer or to some impostor on
a wifi network.

I wish working software could just continue working. Obviously that's
far too sane for this insane world.

Well, thats what goes in the dead.package file when the package is
retired. :)

I was just wanting to stop shipping a known vulnerable package and get
it off my dashboard with all it's CVE's. I'm pretty sure 1.4.11 isn't
actually going to work, but happy for someone to prove me wrong. I don't
really have the time to investigate further myself.

So, I will orphan it now, if no one takes it in a while, I will retire
it then?

Nope, that's pretty much the way to go. We did this[0] for the
PipeWire change[1], so emulating that makes sense.

Packaging Problems: Sequoia PGP backend support in Thunderbird

2021-05-22 Thread Fabio Valentini
Hi everybody,

I've recently worked to package all Sequoia PGP projects for Fedora
34+, which includes an alternative PGP backend for thunderbird [1]
with better system integration (e.g. with the gpg agent, user keyring,
etc.) than the bundled PGP implementation that's based on librnp.

However, thunderbird currently has no support for setting a path to a
different librnp.so implementation [2]. On debian-based systems, this
is solved by using dpkg-divert in the package for the sequoia-based
plugin, but that is not available on RPM based distributions.

The only solution I could come up with so far [3] would be to split
off the default librnp implementation into a thunderbird subpackage,
have it and the alternate implementation virtually provide
"rnp-backend" or something like that, and add a requirement for this
virtual Provide in thunderbird, with a preference for the default
implementation.

This should not change the default behaviour, but would allow users to
easily switch their thunderbird PGP backend with "dnf swap
thunderbird-librnp-rnp sequoia-octopus-librnp", or by specifying it at
install time. Thunderbird and sequoia-octopus-librnp packages with the
necessary patches applied are available from a COPR [4] for testing
for F34+.

What do you think? Am I missing some obvious solution, or is this a
sane way forward?

Thanks,
Fabio
