Firmware packages

2021-11-08 Thread Miroslav Suchý
In the recent discussion about saving space (in the ELF thread) there poped up linux-firmware topic several time. Let's
kick it off as separate thread.

I have several question and I am unable to find the answer for them.

1. How do I find which firmware package I need? On my workstation I have:

$ rpm-qa|grepfirmware |wc-l
27

I seriously doubt I need all of them. I definitely do not need them on server, where I never add any new HW. But how do
I know which one is in use and which not?

2. How the firmware packages actually work? Do I need them to be present every time? Or when module is loaded? Or
something else? (sorry if this too naive question).

3. The linux-firmare has 100MB. And cca 280 MB extracted. Is it about the time to split the package? Here are the
biggest space eater of the space:

18M /usr/lib/firmware/amdgpu
18M /usr/lib/firmware/qcom
28M /usr/lib/firmware/intel
31M /usr/lib/firmware/mrvl
47M /usr/lib/firmware/mellanox

This is enough for FIPS, yes, but it is still very risky, as a bug in the
package reassembly process is a remote root exploit. At a minimum, I
recommend disabling deltarpm by default if repo_gpgcheck is not 1.

I'll add here that even though there's a number of PR's open against
fedora-comps, it's pretty reasonably maintained I think. Uncontroversial
changes are merged pretty quickly... it's just the messy ones where some
group can't come to consensus where they sit around for a long time.

I guess I can just look at closing those and tell people to re-file when
they have made some decision.

These tend to pile up in comps, and I think resolving them *correctly*
is not always that easy of a task. It's *easy* to just remove them, but
I don't doing like that. Nothing is in comps for no reason. I think the
correct thing to do is figure out why they were put there, and what
they should sensibly be replaced by, if anything. Often it turns out
something got retired because it got renamed, or there isn't a direct
rename but there's a clear conceptual replacement, or something along
those lines. Doing this is rather harder than just blanket removing
things, though and is likely to be a substantial time commitment.

Back in 2018 I did two sweeps for this:

https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/c/6928aeb646da1729e46ccecfeaf3d71b3eacef6f?branch=main
https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/c/f17d7ec65ef6d4b7d9a183ed76d79f09577b4147?branch=main

and those took me at least a day each, I think. As you can see from the
changes, it's often not as simple as "just delete the line".

I also, at the time, wrote a script to find 'missing' entries like
this:

https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/c/b7db172dc739f8acd50fc8e2a0129931036f3c22?branch=main

it's still there, as check-missing in the comps repo. Ian McInerny has
since tweaked it a bit, including making it capable of automatically
removing the 'missing' entries (though I don't think it's a good idea
to just use that and say the job's done, for the reasons explained
above). He ran it and did a mass removal in the F33 timeframe:

https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/506
https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/c/88c584531bf2fddb96ac2020fca0a74e1da37f1e?branch=main

though nobody seems to have tried to identify appropriate replacements
for the removed lines, which is unfortunate. Also I just noticed his
changes seem to get indenting wrong, wherever it changes the
 line, it indents it wrongly...

JSON is truly universal. We use it *everywhere* already, including in
trusted, security-sensitive areas.

Most prominently, LUKS2 uses JSON to encode most of its metadata in
the LUKS2 superblock. It doesn't get much more security-sensitive than
that.

And I think that's a *good* thing: JSON might not be perfect — because
nothing is —, but it's certainly one of the better designed generic
data formats around, and it's complexity is absolutely managable. I am
pretty sure *more* subsystems should use that to store their data, and
that we'd unify *more* on it, rather then *less*. Homegrown, manual,
application-specific formats and parsers are a *bad* thing, and not
something to strive for.

Sharing data formats, unifying behaviour and parsers is a way to
*minimize* components both on the conceptual level and in code. Thus
one shouldn't see the reuse of JSON here as "yet another layer", but
instead as "reuse existing infra" to *reduce* the number of layers.

So yes, the fact that the JSON parser used here is a layer that is
already deployed widely (though in other contexts) and has been
thoroughly fuzzed is a *good* thing, and putting together a new parser
here for a new format woudn't be.

> and such?

I think this a point of confusion/disagreement. Why do you say that the
change is "invasive"?

Is it the extra size? It's completely dwarfed by many other routine
changes that we do, from new compiler speed optimizations that
increase size a bit, through new translation strings, through new
translation languages, through any additional functionality in any of
the frequently used libs, to the recent change from XZ to ZSTD. I'm
quite sure that if this level of changed happened implicitly through
e.g. a compiler change, nobody would ever notice.
Is it the extra compilation time? The answer is similar here: the
extra cost of inserting a few hundred bytes is completely dwarfed by
the compilation and linkage times, especially with LTO.
Is it the extra complexity? It's a very very simple generator and one
additional linkage option. This hasn't been widely deployed, so of
course there might be some complications, but there really very little
that can break here, and even if there's some issue, I'm fairly
confident we'll be able to fix it. So far the details of
implementation haven't really been questioned. If it turns out that the
current generator implementation is a problem, I'll be happy to
rewrite it, maybe even in lua, so that it can be done as part of the
spec generation without any external code. (Though I'd very much prefer
to wait with such optimizations until the format and contents have
seen more exposure; right now this would be premature optimization.)
And the note is inserted during package build, and then isn't consumed
by anything, until maybe the program crashes. Parsing the note is
completely trivial in complexity compared to the stack unwinding and
backtrace generation that happens in coredump analyzers. So it really
has no effect during normal runtime, and a very small one in analysis
programs for which the note is intended.

So I really don't understand the question about tradeoffs and risks.

Please, don't read too much into the part about containers. Personally,
I don't care about containers too much, I care about the other cases,
in particular programs crashing in the initrd.

systemd-coredump is also not particularly important here: it's just one
of consumer of this, even though it'll probably be an important one in
the context of Fedora. We are trying to build a generic standard, and
new uses that we can't even predict now will show up over time. The
format is open-ended, so it seems likely that people will come up
with new stuff to put there in their own builds.

systemd-coredump generally is *not* present in container images.

FWIW, you can remove the note, e.g. with patchelf or objcopy.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't see why this would be a concern,
and in particular why it would be *our* concern. It'd be like stripping
.note.gnu.build-id: technically possible, but I've never heard that come
up and I don't see why it would.

Realistically, the sizes here are too small for this to matter.
For a container image with a few dozen libraries and a few executables,
we are talking about kilobytes of data compared to hundreds of megs
for a container built from distro packages. Anyone who really optimizes
container size to the level where this would matter, is never going to
use our distro binaries but will use custom builds.

Would it though? Have you tested and checked it to make that determination? Can
you share the code to reproduce it?

The values necessarily have to be strings, since the data varies unpredictably.
The longest data fields are most likely going to be CPE and debuginfod URLs,
package name and package version, which can be in the worst cases a few dozen
bytes each. And to avoid completely throwing extensibility and flexibility to
the wind, which is one of the key aspects of the proposals, the keys have to be
strings too, so that each producer can add new fields if they want to, and
users/support/maintainers can read them just fine without knowing all possible
keys in advance. So at most you'd save from the json's quotes, commas and
colons - that's 6 bytes per field. With 5 fields, that's 30 bytes saved without
considering the space needed for the header encoding sizes and whatnot, on a
total of ~200 bytes, with a considerable worse usability (custom format needing
its own parsers and builders instead of well-known and understood json). It

I think it's because you only see deltas from N to N+1 now and before
you saw deltas from N to N+X before. So, I think if we made it somehow
create older deltas, you would again see better savings. The issue
doesn't just cause there to be fewer deltas, but it also causes those
few be be against very recent changes, so less effective.

dnf "no match for group package" on upgrade...

2021-11-08 Thread Matthew Miller
I'm seeing a number of people confused by this message, usually followed by
some actual transaction error.

I _think_ this is happening because these packages are in comps but do not
exist in the distro. Is this correct? I tried to search for it, but the
error message is _very_ common in ... well, people who are asking about it
because of what I said. (For example:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/q/542877/2511)

I found https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1538346 but not much of
a general resolution. It does note that one issue is arch-specific
packages (which maybe just need "arch=..." in comps?).

I think we should:

1. Have a schedule standarded task to remove any packages listed but
non-existent after branch from rawhide. (I assume a Rel-Eng task?)

2. Have DNF make this message less scary. Maybe even move down to a debug
message and not show it by default — I am not seeing a situation where
   they're useful to _most_ end-users.

Anything I'm missing?

Isn't this an ideal use case for copr?
Or is the lack of s390x (and non emulated armv7) there too much of a hurdle?

Well, whether it's small or not is subjective, I think. CBL-Mariner was the
first distro to add support for this, and I can tell you with certainty that
it's not small at all for the internal use cases where this is employed.
I mean build-ids too, if everything goes well and nothing ever crashes or needs
debugged, are never needed. So one could say that even adding that to the ELF
header is touching everything for a small use case. But I don't think it would
be fair, because even if most of the times things are just working and you
don't need to debug anything, it's when things start to go very wrong that you
want to have as much help and as many tools at your disposal as possible.
Even if it was a small use case, support engineers and maintainers have such a
hard job already, it seems to me it would be worth making some of it easier if
the cost is just a few KBs in disk space in the typical scenario.

Note that systemd-coredump is on the host, not in the container. This is one of
the points of the proposal, and mentioned in the wiki: core files are collected
and analyzed on the host, not in container guests, so one of the reasons an
rpm/dpkg/whatever database won't help is because they don't necessarily match.
So users don't have to include systemd-coredump in their container images at
all, before or after this proposal.

Moreover, the difference in size in a typical small container between an
rpm/dpkg/whatever database and the overhead of these notes is several orders of
magnitudes - several megabytes vs several kilobytes. Again this comparison is
done on the wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Package_information_on_ELF_objects#Why_not_just_use_the_rpm_database.3F

Finally, if one is really convinced that they don't need this and want to strip
it out, there's not even the need for a script, objcopy supports removing notes
out of the box with objcopy --remove-section.

> Another thing I thought about were reproducible builds. Does this
> impact reproducible builds and if so, how do we handle that?

It does not impact that, this is covered on the wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Package_information_on_ELF_objects#Won.27t_this_affect_the_Reproducible_Builds_effort.3F

At MSFT we tried several options, but as far as we could tell the only way to
be 100% certain that the metadata is always included automatically in the
corefile if present in the binary is by using an allocated ELF PT_NOTE. Note
that systemd-coredump is just one of the possible consumers - again at MSFT we
have other internal tooling consuming it as well.

Hi,

Anyone knows if xenithorb is still active in Fedora? It's been years since the
last update of the package btrbk and he/she hasn't replied to my question in
bugzilla [1].

I've created the non-responsive maintainer bug [2]. If anyone knows anything,
please, ping me. I'm interested in updating btrbk and I can maintain it if
needed.

Thank you.

Re: F36 Change: Package information on ELF objects (System-Wide Change proposal)

2021-11-08 Thread David Cantrell

On Do, 28.10.21 12:10, David Cantrell (dcantr...@redhat.com) wrote:

Thanks for revising the change proposal and filling in more details.
After reading through it, I have some questions:

1) The proposal notes that users tend to combine built packages from
different distributions. Even in the current environment, do we care
about those use cases without also getting a reproducer for Fedora?

I'd see it this way: ultimately, if this gets adopted by multiple
distros this annotation will helps us separating out the reports by
distro, and then ignore everything but fedora. i.e. if someone deploys
a debian or ubuntu container on a fedora host this should be something
we shouldn't be bothered with supporting. But right now a coredump
generated that way won't tell us much about the situation. But once
this spec is adopted this becomes easy: if we get a report we'll
immediately see that the code that aborted was actually from a
different distro, and we can point the reporter to that and tell them
politely to ask the other distro for help, or alternatively invest the
time and reproduce the issue with the binary provided by fedora
instead.

So, having this info around us allows us to be more efficient with
"not caring" for non-fedora issues.

For me, I feel that in a situation like that where a user has
submitted a bug report that implies using a binary from some other
distribution will lead me to ask "ok, but does this happen with the
packages provided in Fedora? If so, how can I reproduce the problem
locally?" So while these scenarios are described in the proposal, are
they something that Fedora is trying to support?

Well, I don't think Fedora has to care about crashes in other distro's
binaries. we have more than enough to look after anyway. But I do think
we should make it easier to detect this situation and more easily
provide helpful pointers how to find someone else who might be
interested or what to do to make fedora interested.

3) The proposal notes making crash reporting more user-readable. NVRs
instead of Build-IDs, for instance. Why can't systemd ask debuginfod
for that information for reporting? Why does this need to be embedded
in the ELF objects? If it's a value-add, then it could happen if
debuginfod is set up and just have it fall back on the current
reporting mechanism.

We want to be able to do things generically in an offline fashion in
systemd-coredump. I.e. we run the coredump analyzer in a tight
sandbox, and we want quick answers without relying on the network.

The goal of systemd-coredump is to make a coredump something that is
primarily a relatively cheapish log event, and were we do analysis as
much as possible locally, automatically, securely, in privacy and
quickly. If we'd always talk to the network we'd have to open our
sandbox quite a bit, we'd be dependent on external services, we'd leak
some data to the outside, we'd be unreliable and slower — and all that
even though we are interested in only a single string of data
ultimately.

(I think debuginfod is excellent, but I think it would probably be a
consumer of this spec, not a replacement. for example, consider that
the spec has a suggested field 'debugInfoUrl' already, which would
inform debugging tools about the debuginfod servers to talk to to
acquire extended debug info data)

I was thinking more about this proposal over the past weekend and
where I keep ending up is that this is really optimizing for a small
use case by touching ELF metadata all over the system. And that
strikes me as pretty invasive, so is it worth the tradeoffs and risks
and such?

Debugging is a pain, and anything to make that easier is better. It
has been stated multiple times that the information needs to be in the
ELF header because containers and images may lack an RPM database.
Fair, but what about the users that both want a container and image
without the RPM database and systemd-coredump? They still have all of
their ELF files with this information that they removed in other ways.
Do we provide those users with a script to strip .gnu.notes from
everything or is that even a use case of concern?

Efforts to get the system very small for container and image use has
been a goal for a while. And sure we're not talking about a lot of
data, but that's now. The size of everything only grows, so is that
something to consider with the implementation of this feature?

Another thing I thought about were reproducible builds. Does this
impact reproducible builds and if so, how do we handle that?

I would feel more comfortable with this proposal if the data for
systemd-coredump was not part of the ELF metadata. Or if it
absolutely must be part of the ELF metadata, users should know how it
can be removed. I would also vote for a format other than JSON, but
that's just me.

Thanks,

One of the reasons we are sticking to JSON here is so that we can use
battle-tested parsers we already use for other stuff. you want a
parser that is already used, verified, tested elsewhere, and JSON
makes that easy. A homegrown parser of an entirely new special purpose
format is a lot more problematic security-wise.

In particular, the implementation in systemd is undergoing continuous
fuzzing in oss-fuzz, so we hope any simple issues have been already
caught.

I wasn't really concerned with the reliability of the parser, but
rather the necessity of JSON in the first place. The more layers
anything has, the higher the risk.

Nice! Thanks for working on this. I tried to use the csmock plugin,
but got this at the end of the build (on an x86_64 F34 host, building
for fedora-35-x86_64):

+ for file in
/tmp/csmockadxnd155/metamath-0.198-1.fc36/debug/raw-results/builddir/cbmc-capture/pid-*.out

The problem appears to be that csmock-plugin-cbmc doesn't require cbmc
or cbmc-utils:

$ rpm -q --requires csmock-plugin-cbmc
csexec
csmock-common(python3)
python(abi) = 3.9
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
rpmlib(FileDigests) <= 4.6.0-1

I have updated the system from F35 without updates to fully updated and the
problem has disappeared. I have updated in small groups of packages and
rebooted afterwards to check USB. Whatever happened, it is fixed now. My
current kernel is 5.14.16-301 but 5.15.15-300 works also

md5 used as a checksum to only detect network transmission issues is
not a problem, and is not under the purview of the FIPS certification.

As mentioned above the actual packages are still finally reassembled
and the signature checked, so that is what matters in terms of security
(those algorithms and computations need to be FIPS approved and the
implementation certified).

For some packages, that is unfortunately more difficult than fixing the

I don't think that's quite accuroate. If the crypto primitive isn't
being used for security, then FIPS isn't interested - FIPS is only
certifying the cryptography used, and this isn't it. (It's non-FIPS
relevant.)

This leads to a very common workaround for legacy cryptosystems of
tunneling the "bad" crypto in something else: one example is interacting
with RC4 and NTLM, where they're still used but over a tunnel (TLS, VPN,
etc.) that doesn't expose them.

Be well,

Re: Package FFMPEG with royalty free codes (AV1, THEORA, VPX, OGG, OPUS, SPEEX, ...) for Fedora

Andreas Schneider wrote:

I see from the presence of electron-13-openh264-format-security.patch that
you are building the bundled OpenH264. This is not going to be allowed on
Fedora: only the openh264 repository provided by Cisco is allowed to
distribute OpenH264 for Fedora due to how the H.264 patent license works.
And as I understand it, you cannot even build against a system OpenH264
(because that repository is not enabled in the build system). The only
packages that support OpenH264 within Fedora are those that can dlopen it at
runtime, which Chromium cannot.

The build of openh264 is also controlled by enable_proprietary_codecs, which
you unconditionally set to true. So your approach is not going to work on
Fedora. In fact, you are not even supposed to include openh264 in the
tarball at all. At least in qt5-qtwebengine, I added an rm -rf line to the
tarball cleanup script that removes it (some time ago, back when upstream
had added the bundled copy), I have not checked whether the chromium package
does that too, but in any case, it should.

This is also another reason why just swapping out ffmpeg will not give you
fully working support for patent-encumbered codecs, whereas the qt5-
qtwebengine-freeworld approach (just rebuilding the whole thing) will. (qt5-
qtwebengine-freeworld in RPM Fusion does include the bundled OpenH264, as
there is nothing preventing shipping non-Cisco builds there, the copyright
license is perfectly fine, it is the patent license that only applies to
builds shipped by Cisco.) FFmpeg does not include a H.264 encoder at all. It
has support for using an external libx264, but Chromium does not support
using that libx264 support, nor using libx264 directly. Instead, Chromium
relies on OpenH264 for encoding (probably because that ensures that the
bitstream will only use features that are also supported by the OpenH264
decoder used by some other browsers, even though Chromium does not use the
decoder from OpenH264, only the encoder). Hence, Chromium uses OpenH264
directly (for encoding), which is a compile-time decision based on
enable_proprietary_codecs and not affected by replacing FFmpeg at all.

I do *not* intend to pick up ownership of this. It is dead upstream and
we're letting it die off from F35 onwards, since we don't believe it is
used by anything now that libvirt dropped its usage.

I'm merely retaining commit privs in case older branches need patching

As I understand it, it was never true, in the sense that it was always
*possible* to build Electron completely from sources. The issue was that the
upstream build system worked against you there and that you had to jump
through a lot of hoops to use components built from source instead of blobs

PS: And, also last I checked, even MP3 (whose patents expired a few years
ago) was still considered a "proprietary codec" by Chromium. (The Fedora
Chromium package, but not the qt5-qtwebengine one, has a patch to enable MP3
support, but I think it does not actually touch the supported codec list, it
only enables the codec in the bundled ffmpeg. And to do so, it also requires
several files related, according to their names, to other patent-encumbered
codecs such as AAC, files that I was not comfortable with shipping in qt5-
qtwebengine when I last looked into the issue, which was before I handed
over qt5-qtwebengine maintenance to Rex Dieter.)

And does Chromium fully work with HTML5 video if you do that? In particular,
does it correctly report the list of supported codecs to the website? Last I
checked, Chromium hardcoded the list of supported codecs at compile time
(and there were actually only 2 hardcoded lists in the source code, one of
which was selected at compile time depending on whether the
"proprietary_codecs" flag was set at compile time or not; no attempt
whatsoever was made to query ffmpeg for what codecs it actually supports,
neither at compile time nor at runtime), so the only way to replace the list
was to replace the entire Chromium (which is what qt5-qtwebengine-freeworld
does for qt5-qtwebengine: it replaces the entire QtWebEngine shared
libraries including the entire bundled Chromium).

qt5-qtwebengine does it too, using a fork of the cleanup script from the
Chromium package.

Self Introduction: Alexander Bulimov

2021-11-08 Thread Alexander Bulimov
Hello!

I work at Facebook on the team dealing with all things NTP/PTP, including
the OCP Time Appliance Project.

We've already open-sourced lots of related software, Davide Cavalca kindly
packaged most of it, and from now on I'll be actively supporting and
updating it.

My focus for now will be on all the stuff under
github.com/facebookincubator/ntp, github.com/facebookincubator/ptp,
github.com/Orolia2s/oscillatord, and dependencies.

The plan is to maintain it with Davide's help, and provide regular updates
as the Time Appliance project is in the very active phase now.

Cheers
Alex

[SONAME BUMP] libcint 5.0.0 / qcint 5.0.0

2021-11-08 Thread Susi Lehtola
Hi,

libcint 5.0.0 and qcint 5.0.0 have been released, with a soname bump.
I'll be pushing the update in one week to rawhide. The only affected
package is python-pyscf, which is also mine, and which I'll be similarly
updating to version 2.0.1 that has also been released recently.

Not sure what downgrading linux-firmware will do here a the Intel USB
controllers don't require firmware.

I haven't done it in the form of a spec file recently. It hasn't been worth my

Fully offline with rebuilding all JS dependencies from sources?

All minified JS blobs must be rebuild from sources on Fedora infra
instead of downloading them from npm with direct links.

It's not automatically a thing, but it is possible.

I've done an offline build with some prep work upfront, yes. It's not
automatically a thing, but it is possible.

I have downgraded everything to the released F35 and now it works,
with kernel 5.14.16-301 and linux-firmware-20210919-125

The fix for this problem is the difference between -300 and -301 (revert

Hi,

there are several packages in the distribution which require FFMPEG
(libavformat, libavcodec, etc.), one of them being chromium. The package
could

be created in a way that you can easily replace it with a version

from rpmfusion to get to the full encoder/decoder set including H264 etc.

This is working fine with openSUSE and packages from Packman.

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/multimedia:libs/ffmpeg-4
https://pmbs.links2linux.org/package/show/Essentials/A_tw-ffmpeg

The Packman version always has a higher release version than the one in
the

  distribution.

I'm interested in this, as I try to package electron for Fedora. The big
problem is the included ffmpeg. With openSUSE I can just use the system
ffmpeg, with Fedora I have to do some source code voodoo which I really
would

  like to avoid.

Maintaining such package would require keeping watch for any new files
you'd need to include and going through legal review each time you do.

Did you take a look how they solved it at SUSE?

Actually, yes. We cannot do the same as we cannot distribute the full
upstream source.

You have list for encoder and decoders which are allowed to be built. So if a
new encoder or decoder would be added, it would just not be built. You will
just always end up with the same set of encoders/decoders with every update.

Sometimes new dependencies get added to existing decoders/encoders which
would require legal review.

Packman uses the exact same package as openSUSE and all it does it to enable
all encoders and decoders.

All packages requiring ffmpeg can just always be built against the system
version.

It should be less legal work, as you have to check just one package and not
several which might include it as third_party source code.

Chromium was checked by legal. I'm not aware of any other Fedora
packages bundling a subset of FFmpeg.

Firefox ships bundled ffmpeg with VP8/9 and maybe some other codecs.

I have a similar system. lspci out looks near identical. The system was
just booted this morning.

I normally run it headless with just power and network connected, but
plugging in a USB mouse, thumb drive, and USB optical drive, they show
up fine in dmesg and lsusb output using random USB ports on the front

the thumb drive fine.

The developers will need to know what the exact motherboard/laptop
version and manufacturer you have in order to diagnose this issue. My
initial guess is that since the f34 kernel also fails, that the
problem is with a firmware module and whatever the motherboard is
expecting to use. [The fact that it is only finding USB2 says that
either the system is really old or that it is trying to fail to its
lowest working value.]

My workstation is a Dell Precision Tower 7910.

lscpi says I have the following serial bus controllers

00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation C610/X99 series chipset USB
xHCI Host Controller (rev 05)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation C610/X99 series chipset USB

You can set the dist tag suffix in the build tag too. That's what we
do for ELN, for example.

You can set any number of macros this way and use them as flags to
trigger behavioral differences in packages submitted to build. The way
*I* suggest doing it (you may choose another way, of course) would be
to set the flags up in the build tag and build from the rawhide
branch. Fixes for C99 should be integrated straight into the mainline
rawhide branch anyway.

Is it possible to set a dist tag suffix for the branch, then? In
combination with the flag approach, that would actually be more
convenient (assuming the gcc folks are okay with a conditionally applied
patch for that branch).

These configs are in preparation for an F36 potential feature, and
were not intended to work flawlessly on F35 or earlier. They were
backed out from the fedora-5.15 branch as soon as it was created
because that branch targets stable Fedora. While simpledrm will work
for many systems at this time, it seems to have issues with nvidia
drivers at least.

Seems like a worthy effort to me. Though instead of having branches
for redhat-rpm-config, you could add macros to flag it on and off by
default, and have releng configure a side-tag for you that turns it on
for package builds (we can have macros set for build tags).

Long-running side tag for porting Fedora to C99 (no implicit decls)

2021-11-08 Thread Florian Weimer
I would like to create a long-running rawhide side tag for preparing
Fedora for the removal of implicit function declarations from the GCC
defaults. This is a change that happened in the C99 version of the
language, but GCC could not adopt at the time because too much software
was broken by it. Even today, there are build failures, and, arguably
worse, successful builds with different feature sets.

The goal is to disable implicit function declarations in GCC 13, to be
released in spring 2023 (not next year's GCC 12 version). This plan was
presented at this year's Cauldron, and was met with approval:

  Eliminating implicit function declarations

I have some space to work on this during the coming months, for
implementing the buildroot changes (in gcc and presumably
redhat-rpm-config, built off branches in dist-git), for creating some
HTML reports, and even for creating the package changes themselves.
Changes will be submitted to upstream projects initially. Eventually,
we'll have to fix the Fedora packages if there's no upstream release
with the fixes. We'll need some way to coordinate the fixes between
multiple developers, a way to find unapplied upstream fixes once we are
heading towards Fedora 38, and ideally some way to share patches across
distributions if the upstream project no longer exists/accepts patches.

If Fedora wants to support this, I'd need a long-running side tag in
Koji, and a few dist-git branches (for gcc and redhat-rpm-config). I
can do the test builds as scratch builds, to conserve storage space and
not to pollute Koji with uninteresting NVRs.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Florian

The developers will need to know what the exact motherboard/laptop
version and manufacturer you have in order to diagnose this issue. My
initial guess is that since the f34 kernel also fails, that the
problem is with a firmware module and whatever the motherboard is
expecting to use. [The fact that it is only finding USB2 says that
either the system is really old or that it is trying to fail to its
lowest working value.]

Actually, yes. We cannot do the same as we cannot distribute the full
upstream source.

Sometimes new dependencies get added to existing decoders/encoders which
would require legal review.

Chromium was checked by legal. I'm not aware of any other Fedora
packages bundling a subset of FFmpeg.

I agree it would be better to have one system package that others would
link against but as with everything, it's not always possible. You're
welcome to try.

That's what I meant although I haven't said so explicitly. The chromium
script does what you've described.

In order to get the overall system to be FIPS (and equivalent EU/RU/CN
ones) certified all the implementations of various functions have to
be audited and reviewed. Some must be able to be turned off no matter
what. It doesn't matter if 99 of the 100 versions of md5um are only
for consistency, they must be able to be turned off/not used and not
affect the system.
[ The reason why we can't have nice things is that various
super-programmers who see that 99 versions of md5sum are gone, but
find that one call in say librpm which still exists, so they make a
wrapper to it and then tie the bank code to it. Next thing you know,
you find yourself not just on the Register as a story about code gone
wrong but on the front page of various financial newspapers due to
bank losses.]

My guess is that we hit a sweet spot at a certain time, and we would
need to constantly tune deltarpm to find it. Compiler changes, link
tool changes, different options in a compile, etc can cause code to
look different enough that the diff is larger at times (even if the
underlying machine code is the same, just put in different places in
the executable.)

It isn't always irrelevant. The case which worries me is where the
attacks are on the tool which tries to make the RPM from the contents
on the disk and the deltarpm. In this case the tool has to have root
level access to reconstruct the original rpm and then apply the
deltarpm to it. Currently it must assume that the deltarpm is valid
until proven otherwise and so is going through untrustable data. This
is a place where anyone wanting to attack people who use Qubes are
most likely to focus on. [And yes that is a downstream but these sorts
of attackers are going to shotgun their attack in a way which hits
upstream also.]

F35 no USB after today's updates

2021-11-08 Thread Sergio Pascual
Hi, I upgraded my workstation to F35 last Friday, and today I 'dnf updated'
and rebooted. After the reboot, all my USBs are disabled. No mouse, no
keyword.
I know my hardware works because the keyboard works in grub, and the light
of my optical mouse in on until some errors appear in the kernel during
boot.

I have tried:

kernel-5.14.15-300.fc35.x86_64

without success.
I'm getting messages like these:

I'm afraid that in its current implementation deltarpm is simply not
very efficient, I usually see <5% saved when doing updates on my Fedora
laptop. I would not expect this to differ too much from a a Fedora
running on eq. PinePhone or other mobile device.

What could work well already is using ostree or ostree based Fedora
distro on a phone - that has efficient delta-based updates built in
and used by default. So using say Silverblue/Kinoite or similar on a
phone could be much more efficient than using deltarpm + you get
additional benefits of being able to roll back at any time, which could
be useful on such a new Fedora platform.

Also flatpaks are ostree based & should get the same delta download and
de-duplication benefits automatically. So using as many flatpaks as
possible on a Fedora running mobile phone could also help quite a bit.

It's not the point that it's easier.

If I understand correctly, any official ffmpeg package distributed by
Fedora would not be allowed to contain even the *source code* for
patent-encumbered or redistribution-limited codecs in its source
package (because those sources are redistributed too). So the only way
to achieve that would be to use "clean" tarballs - and a hardcoded
list of "allowed codecs to build" alone is not enough to satisfy that
requirement.

Did you take a look how they solved it at SUSE?

You have list for encoder and decoders which are allowed to be built. So if a
new encoder or decoder would be added, it would just not be built. You will
just always end up with the same set of encoders/decoders with every update.

Packman uses the exact same package as openSUSE and all it does it to enable
all encoders and decoders.

All packages requiring ffmpeg can just always be built against the system
version.

It should be less legal work, as you have to check just one package and not
several which might include it as third_party source code.

How is it less work if you need to clean ffmpeg source codes in several
projects which include it instead of just linking the system one? It is more
prone to errors to remove sources and you have to track it instead of just
having a fixed decoder/encoder set you build.

I recommend that deltarpms be disabled by default as they increase attack
surface. Users who need deltarpms to be enabled can turn them on manually.
In the future, deltarpms should be cryptographically signed, which would
mitigate these concerns.

This has been discussed before. The deltarpms don't need to be signed,
it's irrelevant. The resulting rpm is signed and the signature is
checked before installing.

How would you suggest to do that?

From what I can tell, drpms are most useful if you update your system
daily (because deltas are only kept from one compose, and need storage
space) - but unless you have thousands of packages installed, the few
hundred KB - a few MB of download savings you get from drpms every day
(at most) are drowned out by the size of the daily repository metadata
download to even get those drpms. And if you update less often to
reduce the frequency with which you need to download the big repo
metadata, you might not get drpms for any updates at all.

So I don't think that there's *any* scenario where using drpms results
in a net reduction in MBs that need to be downloaded over time,
because either
- failed drpm reconstructions cause whole packages to be redownloaded anyway,
- very few packages have drpms in every update push,
- drpms are only kept for a very limited amount of time and limited
number of packages,
- savings from drpm usage is on the order of at most a few MB per
update per day, and less if not updating every day, but
- repository metadata downloads are reaching ~100MB / day, depending
on how many repos are enabled.

So ... am I missing something, or do drpms actually make things worse
in *every* respect right now?
- more MBs downloaded per update / per day in every scenario I can think of,
- more computationally intensive to reconstruct locally,
- needs compute time and storage space in Fedora build system,
- makes compose process more complicated.

Maintaining such package would require keeping watch for any new files
you'd need to include and going through legal review each time you do.

IMO it's much less work to just maintain everything that depends on
FFmpeg in RPM Fusion.

If you're determined, however, you could start with what Chromium does:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/chromium/blob/rawhide/f/clean_ffmpeg.sh

Feel free to flag me for package review. I one of the maintainers
of the ffmpeg package in RPM Fusion.

They are used as a consistency check, it might as well use crc32.
So I don't see why FIPS is a concern for you.

Cheers,
  Michael.

I recommend that deltarpms be disabled by default as they increase attack
surface. Users who need deltarpms to be enabled can turn them on manually.
In the future, deltarpms should be cryptographically signed, which would
mitigate these concerns.

Package FFMPEG with royalty free codes (AV1, THEORA, VPX, OGG, OPUS, SPEEX, ...) for Fedora

2021-11-08 Thread Andreas Schneider
Hi,

there are several packages in the distribution which require FFMPEG
(libavformat, libavcodec, etc.), one of them being chromium. The package could
be created in a way that you can easily replace it with a version from
rpmfusion to get to the full encoder/decoder set including H264 etc.

This is working fine with openSUSE and packages from Packman.

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/multimedia:libs/ffmpeg-4
https://pmbs.links2linux.org/package/show/Essentials/A_tw-ffmpeg

The Packman version always has a higher release version than the one in the
distribution.

I'm interested in this, as I try to package electron for Fedora. The big
problem is the included ffmpeg. With openSUSE I can just use the system
ffmpeg, with Fedora I have to do some source code voodoo which I really would
like to avoid.

Thanks for considering!

Best regards

Andreas

Dne 07. 11. 21 v 19:27 Richard Shaw napsal(a):
I just upgraded to F35 and I'm trying to build a package via mock and
I'm getting the following error:

/usr/bin/python3: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found
(required by /var/tmp/tmp.mock.lxb87ex8/lib64/nosync.so)

Does it just need a rebuild or something?

Thanks,
Richard

Automated formal verification of RPM packages

2021-11-08 Thread Kamil Dudka
Formal verification of RPM packages with CBMC, Divine, and Symbiotic is now
easier than ever before! csmock plug-ins for these tools are now available
in stable Fedora releases. The plug-ins are still experimental and they have
some technical limitations:

- They work only for source RPM packages that contain the %check section
that directly or indirectly invokes the binaries produced in the %build
  section.

- The tools are known to work reliably only for programs written in C.

- Only one formal verification tool can be enabled in one run of csmock.

- Only *-x86_64 build roots are supported for now.

- The fedora-rawhide-x86_64 build root is not supported at the moment.

The plug-ins can be installed on a Fedora system using the following command:

$ sudo dnf install csmock-plugin-{cbmc,divine,symbiotic}

Then you can formally verify RPM packages of your choice:

$ csmock -r fedora-35-x86_64 -t ${tool} ${pkg}.src.rpm

These plug-ins were developed as part of the AUFOVER (Automation of Formal
Verification) research project:

https://research.redhat.com/blog/research_project/aufover-2/

Some useful tips can be found on the aufover/experiments wiki:

https://github.com/aufover/experiments

If you run into any issues please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
We welcome any feedback you may have as it will help us make further
improvements to the tools.

Kamil and the AUFOVER team
