F39 proposal: Changes of defaults in createrepo_c-1.0.0 (System-Wide Change proposal)

2023-03-23 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/createrepo_c_1.0.0

This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes
process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive
community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved
by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee.

== Summary ==
Update createrepo_c to 1.0.0, new release will include change of
default compression to zstd, no longer generating metadata in sqlite
database format by default and simplified comps xml type in repodata.

== Owner ==
* Name: [[User:Amatej | Aleš Matěj]]
* Email: ama...@redhat.com

== Detailed Description ==
- Switch default compression from gz to zstd. DNF is able to
decompress zstd via libsolv since Fedora 30 and RHEL 8.4. It will
still be possible to create gz compressed repodata by manually
specifying gz compression.
Further information:
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/createrepo_c/issues/82,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1914876

- Stop generating metadata in sqlite database format by default. It
will still be possible to create them using a --database switch or via
sqliterepo_c tool. (It looks like the only user left is mdapi:
https://github.com/fedora-infra/mdapi/issues/97).
Further information:
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/createrepo_c/issues/338 and
https://pagure.io/releng/issue/10745

- When adding groups.xml to repodata createrepo_c currently adds two
variants to repomd.xml. The specified file as is, uncompressed, with
the type "group" and also a compressed variant with type "group_XX",
where XX is compression suffix. This is atypical and unexpected. We
propose to include just one variant of groups.xml using specified
compression and repomd.xml type "group". This is not compatible with
yum in RHEL 7. If required users will still be able to create
repositories with the old layout using modifyrepo_c.
Further information: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2056318

- To reflect API and overall stability increase major version above 0.

== Feedback ==

== Benefit to Fedora ==
* Using zstd compression provides smaller metadata that are faster to
decompress.
* Generating sqlite metadata is expensive, its slowing createrepo_c
runs and it takes up space on mirrors. (For F37 updates repo:
primary_db: 12.8 mb, filelists_db: 22.0 mb, other_db: 4.2 mb.)
* More consistent metadata, groups use the same logic as other
metadata types. Fixes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1904360

== Scope ==
* Proposal owners: Implement specified changes, mostly changes of default.
* Other developers: There are no requirements on other developers.

* Release engineering:
* Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Alignment with Objectives:

== Upgrade/compatibility impact ==
Repodata created with createrepo_c's new defaults will not be
compatible with fedora < 30 and RHEL < 8.4 (including RHEL 7, 6).
This is mainly due to zstd compression but old YUM also cannot handle
the changed mdtype of groups (it is compatible only with uncompressed
- "group" and compressed - "group_XX" not compressed - "group").

Regarding the sqlite databases if some other users would require them
they can always download the xml metadata and use sqliterepo_c to
generate them locally.

== How To Test ==
Repositories generated with updated createrepo_c have to work with
dnf. Specifically we should ensure that groups are still loaded.

== User Experience ==
The only noticeable effect should be smaller metadata thanks to zstd
compression resulting in faster downloads (when zchunk is not used).
The (de)compression speed up is not very noticeable.

For example for F37 fedora repo:
* primary.xml.gz: 18M -> primary.xml.zst: 14M
* filelists.xml.gz: 52M -> filelists.xml.zst: 41M
* other.xml.gz: 6.9M -> other.xml.zst: 5.4M

== Dependencies ==
Updating createrepo_c does not require any other change requests to
complete first.

Metadata generated by the following tools could be affected by the
described changes if they use createrepo_c's default configuration. It
is hard to tell what effect will this have on the tools. If they
create metadata for dnf it will work fine. In case there are any
problems it is possible to manually setup the old behavior (as
described above) or revert the changes.

F39 proposal: Changes of defaults in createrepo_c-1.0.0 (System-Wide Change proposal)

2023-03-23 Thread Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/createrepo_c_1.0.0

This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes
process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive
community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved
by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee.

== Summary ==
Update createrepo_c to 1.0.0, new release will include change of
default compression to zstd, no longer generating metadata in sqlite
database format by default and simplified comps xml type in repodata.

== Owner ==
* Name: [[User:Amatej | Aleš Matěj]]
* Email: ama...@redhat.com

== Detailed Description ==
- Switch default compression from gz to zstd. DNF is able to
decompress zstd via libsolv since Fedora 30 and RHEL 8.4. It will
still be possible to create gz compressed repodata by manually
specifying gz compression.
Further information:
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/createrepo_c/issues/82,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1914876

- Stop generating metadata in sqlite database format by default. It
will still be possible to create them using a --database switch or via
sqliterepo_c tool. (It looks like the only user left is mdapi:
https://github.com/fedora-infra/mdapi/issues/97).
Further information:
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/createrepo_c/issues/338 and
https://pagure.io/releng/issue/10745

- When adding groups.xml to repodata createrepo_c currently adds two
variants to repomd.xml. The specified file as is, uncompressed, with
the type "group" and also a compressed variant with type "group_XX",
where XX is compression suffix. This is atypical and unexpected. We
propose to include just one variant of groups.xml using specified
compression and repomd.xml type "group". This is not compatible with
yum in RHEL 7. If required users will still be able to create
repositories with the old layout using modifyrepo_c.
Further information: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2056318

- To reflect API and overall stability increase major version above 0.

== Feedback ==

== Benefit to Fedora ==

== Scope ==
* Proposal owners: Implement specified changes, mostly changes of default.
* Other developers: There are no requirements on other developers.

* Release engineering:
* Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Alignment with Objectives:

OK, that’s a different issue. Looking around to find a suitable location in the
server kickstart files, I found the following in comps: (pagure.io/fedora-comps
- f38)

comps-f38.xml.in:Note: The anaconda-tools group lists packages that

Did you already add the nvme-cli package to the anaconda-tools? As I
understand, that way the package would become part of the Anaconda runtime and
included in the installation medium. That might be a better way as to include
it into the files to be installed on every Fedora Server to be created,
regardless whether it is needed.

If you build with "rpmbuild -bb", then yes, I meant those directories,
plus wherever your sources are in case they are on disk uncompressed.

I don't think anything owned by "root" should be getting messed up by
running builds (I hope you're not running them as root!), but you
could try to verify that things aren't broken by running something
like "sudo rpm -Va" and checking whether any GCC headers are messed up
(i.e. MD5 checksum mismatches).

Re: Strange problem: Builds in container, not on machine

2023-03-23 Thread Ron Olson
Are you referring to the directories under rpmbuild? If so, I delete and
recreate the directory and its structure every single time as part of my
build shell script.

I’m going to try to reproduce with installing F36, building Swift,

I've seen similar problems in the distant past when I needed to
maintain C / C++ code for some of my packages ...
They were almost always caused by "dirty" (or not completely cleaned)
build directories, or were caused by stale items in ccache.
Neither "diry build directory" nor ccache affect mock builds (unless
you explicitly enable the ccache plugin, which is turned off by
default), they seem like likely culprits :)

[rpms/perl-Net-Amazon-S3] PR #2: Backport patch to make mutlipart uploads work

2023-03-23 Thread Petr Pisar

ppisar commented on the pull-request: `Backport patch to make mutlipart uploads
work` that you are following:
``
Thanks for the patch. I slightly reworded the changes in spec file and applied
to Fedora 39–36 and and EPEL 9.

I looked at EPEL 7 and there is Net-Amazon-S3-0.89 which is much different from
0.911: It has put_part() method which probably carries the two default
arguments acl_short and copy_source using same-named roles of
Net::Amazon::S3::Request::PutPart class. Those roles could be removed from the
class. Regarding the is_xml_content(), the only similar check for XML content
type is in _send_request().

Because I don't know anything about S3 and I don't have any account at Amazon
to test it, I don't feel qualified to backport the patch to Net-Amazon-S3-0.89
in EPEL87 So I'm going to skip EPEL7. If you provide a tested patch, I'll be
happy to apply it.

EPEL 7 was not updated to the latest Net-Amazon-S3 because 0.90 removed a
documentation and 0.92 brought significant changes. There were also problems
with tests which already in 0.89 required changes to work with other EPEL-7
packages. So unless somebody indicates that 0.89 does not work at all with
current S3 servers, I'm hesitant to rebase it to the latest upstream version.

I think I'm finally getting somewhere with this problem.

My motherboard has a built-in VGA interface, which shows up as
"astdrmfb" on fb0. My AMD video card is "amdgpudrmfb" on fb1.

For some reason, the kernel uses fb1 for the graphical desktop, but
when I type Ctrl-Alt-F3 it switches to the VGA interface on fb0.

So my question is now probably simpler - I need to find a way to tell
the kernel to ignore fb0 completely, and just use fb1 for everything.

I'll do some searching to see if I can figure that out, but if
someone knows off the top of their head how to force a framebuffer to
be ignored, I'd appreciate it.

Is there a way to turn off the fb0 in the BIOS? Hit F2 or Del to get
into the bios while booting. Yours might be different, but I think
these are pretty standard.

I read through the motherboard manual and while I don't see a way to
turn off the on-board VGA hardware from the BIOS, there is a physical
switch on the motherboard to disable it completely.

I tried that, and it worked. Now the kernel only sees my AMD video
card and assigns it to fb0. And all the virtual consoles now work
properly.

Thanks again for your help, Stan. I appreciate it!

For future reference and for others who bump into similar issue, you can
use the fbcon=map:1 kernel option to map the second fb to the console.
See https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/fb/fbcon.html for more
details.

Thanks, Dominik. I've added that to my kernel cheat-sheet. Very good
information to keep handy.

In this case the dependency is dynamically generated at runtime - if
Blivet find the right NVME hardware on the target system, it will
request the nvme-cli package to be installed. For this to work, the
nvme-cli package needs to be present on the DVD image repos. So to
fully solve this issue, I think we will have to somehow hardwire the
package to be included in the DVD repos, as regular "static"
dependencies are not directly in play here.

mdbtools soname change headsup

2023-03-23 Thread Hans de Goede
Hi All,

I'm going to update mdbtools to the 1.0.0 release in rawhide, this will change
the soname.

Only 2 packages are affected by this: libgda5 and recutils. I will take care of
rebuilding these against the new mdbtools libs myself.

Regards,

Hans
