some securirity issue in fc37, upgraded form fc36

2022-10-05 Thread Joachim Backes

I ubgraded fromm fc36 to fc37 Beta.

My issue: Running a MATE session in fc37, and suspending it by the
command "sudo systemctl suspend". Then I saw that it is possible to
resume to the suspended session without entering the login password of
the previously suspended session.

The same problem exists in fc36.

No such problems if doing the same procedure in a Cinnamon session.

Anybody made the similar experience?

Kind regards

display state of package generation on KOJI

2015-10-27 Thread Joachim Backes

Hi developers,

sometimes I'm searching for new packages on KOJI, for example for new
kernels, but I see only a "Finished" column (beside others) on the
specific website. It would be helpful if the "Finished" column could
display a little bit more: The time of *starting* the package generation
or the time when the generation has *finished* (with/without error), so
one could guess the remaining time of package generation.

I would be grateful for such an improvement.

Thunderbird-38.0.1 integrates lightning? Very disturbing!!

after upgrading to tb-38.0.1, thunderbird-lightning-3.3-5.fc22.x86_64

activated and removed.

Because I thougt that tb-lighning is now obsolete, I removed the
extension, but then I get rid totally from the calendars. So my

lightning from the moz. extension pages?

I may have missed a corresponding post on fedora-devel, but I think a
heads up notice to maintainers of depending packages may be in order
before you retire a package, as a general idea.

You see, unretiring a package is so much more work than changing
 maintainership.

As for pdftk: I see 2 failed builds for version 1.45 and none for the
current version 2.02 (which probably breaks the api anyways). What are
the plans? Retire pdftk completely? Start fresh with pdftk2?

pdflabs, the maker of pdftk, provide binary as well as source rpms for
pdftk 2.02, by the way. I might even look into packaging it but don't
want to duplicate any existing efforts.

The usage of bodhi -D x. will download *all* and not only the

Update it with:
# su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing x-4.1.0.0-4.beta1.fc19'
as soon as you are able to.
Please go to the following url:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2013-9971/x-4.1.0.0-4.beta1.fc19

*My question:* if x consists of a lot of packages, and I'm only
needing some few of them (libreoffice is a good example), how then can I
automatically download only those packages installed on my site?

Wouldn't this just be:

% sudo yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing --downloadonly
x-4.1.0.0-4.beta1.fc19

- ajax

No, because in the most cases I receive this email, it's not yet arrived
in updates-testing. This is the problem. And I want to avoid a download
for a lot of single pkg's which is a painful thing.

Recommended memory size for F19?

Dear developers,

I was running F18 on an old notebook with 512 MB memory (not
extendable). Now, I upgraded this box to F19 with yum. The upgrade was
done, but now, the box is no more operable because it is continuously
swapping.

Question: which minimal memory size is recommended for F19?

source using L_cuserid

#include unistd.h

aggregation of gnome tools

2011-09-07 Thread Joachim Backes
In the meanwhile, several tools have been developed for the management
of my gnome or gnome3 desktop (gui or not gui based), but each time I
need to use them I have to think about what tool to use:

gnome-tweak-tool
gconf-editor
dconf-editor
gconftool-2
gnome-session-properties
...

It seems there is a tendency for creating more and more such tools.

It would be very helpful for the user if such tools could be aggregated
to a *homogenous* and gui based tool so I have not to think about which
one to use.

All comments are welcome.

Samsung ml printers

2011-07-07 Thread Joachim Backes
Attaching Samsung ML printers (e.g. ML-1660) registers such a printer
with an URI as usb://... . But its's not possible to work with such a
printer :-(

The only way is to use the Samsung package
UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.86.tar.gz. It installs such a printer too with an
URI as usb://..., but then it is fully operable.

Additionally, no splix package available in F15.

On the other hand, the attach process in *Ubuntu 11.04* leaves a fully
operable printer without any need for interaction.

Why this difference?

 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=674619

Summary: Maybe others (and me) have tried to package it for Fedora. But
there's an (optional) non-open source part for picture processing and
it's unclear if you need it for your special printer type or if it is
only to improve performance of the driver to printer communication.

Suggestion: Just take and use the rpm of openprinting to have fun :)
My Samsung ML-1640 is working well with openprinting.

 Greetings,
 R.

Hi Raphael,

thank you for your advice, but if I install the
openprinting-splix-2.0.0-2lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm (I guess, you meant this),
my printer ML-1660 (USB attached) is not found in the database, so it is
not operable, although I had loaded the kernel module usblp.ko.

Sorry.

F14 Question: AVerMedia AVerTV Volar Black HD/-A850 availability

2010-08-18 Thread Joachim Backes

Hi,

I have the impression that the DVBT-USB stick mentioned in the subject
line is not supported by F14. After plugging in, I got an error msg:
missing firmware file in /lib/firmware:

==
Aug 17 16:13:56 localhost kernel: dvb-usb: found a 'AverMedia AVerTV
Volar Black HD (A850)' in cold state, will try to load a firmware
Aug 17 16:13:56 localhost kernel: dvb-usb: did not find the firmware
file. (dvb-usb-af9015.fw) Please see linux/Documentation/dvb/ for more
details on firmware-problems.

==

So I copied dvb-usb-af9015.fw from some UBUNTU installation to
/lib/firmware, and I could watch digital TV with kaffeine.

So my question: would it be possible to support that stick in = F15
versions?

What does the DVD media check if installing a new Fedora version? / Proposal

2010-08-13 Thread Joachim Backes
Hi,

having the following question: What does the DVD/CD media check exactly
if booting a Fedora DVD/CD? Is it the sha256sum? If yes, why this media
check, because it could be done after having burned the DVD?

If not, is it possible to perform this media check immediately after
having burned the DVD (means: can I start the media check from that
freshly burned DVD?)

Proposal: If not, it would be nice if the media checker would be placed
on the DVD for running in normal mode after the DVD has burned - perhaps
allowing to check both an i386 and x86_64 install DVD.

To install it, use 'rpm -ivh' for the kernel and -devel packages. If you
have kernel-headers installed, 'rpm -Uvh' that first. Then reboot to the
kernel and check that it boots up okay. Please reply to this thread with
