Make sure your grub config file has an initrd line for that kernel.
It doesn't seem like an initramfs is getting run.

It seems that the initramfs does not find any drives. Can you check if the
drivers for your disk are included in the initramfs.img?

Comparing available .ko files from a working initramfs and the new one is
likely the easiest.
