XO-1 touchpad once more
I came across a forum post [1] (last sentence) that remind it me once more the ALPS XO-1 touchpad issue. In all the post os802 builds, OLPC 10.1.x, Dextrose 2x and OLPC 11.2.0, the problem is *considerably* worse eg much more often and persistent than in F9 builds. The fact that the touchpad was jumpy before, may result in labeling this not a regression. But is clearly NOT the case. With post F9 builds is really hard to use first generation XO-1s without a mouse. Before was bad, now is close to intolerable. I can appreciate that ALPS XO-1s are long EOL and newer builds and hardware are more pressing matters, but we are talking probably half the OLPC installed base here that may not be able to be fully benefited by the newer builds. I do not think that should be seen as a secondary issue or something that there is nothing to be done about. Yes, it is a hardware problem in its core but it was not that bad in older builds. So something should/could be done to at least go back to that level of discomfort. What about going back to the 2.6.25 driver? Even without auto-recalibration provided a better user experience apparently. Christoph, You can check on Pootle and you can check in git. Git is typically more impotant to seeing it in the builds. Re: Re: XO-1 touchpad once more
My experience is that the xo1 touchpad previously had infrequent periods of total unusability, that is you just had to shut the lid and do something else for an hour but this was a relatively rare event, maybe once a week Now the touchpad auto-recalibrates, there are frequent periods of unusability that last for round 30 seconds, maybe 4 times an hour This no doubt varies from laptop to laptop. I suspect that for my XO1, the error sensing for the recalibrate is more aggressive than optimum. I recollect that the driver's author issued the invitation for people to mess with the settings and report what settings work best for them. Maybe if anybody is unhappy with current performance, the best contribution would be to look at the source and experiment with the settings Tony Well, we certainly seem to have reduced the frequency of the problem overall, even if a few people who never had the problem now have it. ;-) It's the overall frequency that matters. ___ Devel mailing list Devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/devel

Tony, At some point I may develop a life-cycle of a localized string explanation for the wiki, but at the moment I am fairly fully engaged with wrangling L10n teams to complete their work and commit it in time for the 11.2.0 release, working with sysadmin types like Rafael and Gonzalo to iron out some kinks behind-the-scenes in our Pootle instance, as well as conducting a thorough QA of newly hosted PO files from upstream projects (GNASH and AbiWord) and downstream projects (WavePlace) while tracking the GNOME upstream of key packages in a large number of languages. In the interim, I can point you at the Internationalization / Localization chapter of James Simmon's fine FLOSSManual bpublication for more information. http://en.flossmanuals.net/make-your-own-sugar-activities/ch013_going-international-with-pootle/ I would be happy to answer any specific questions you may have, although it might be best to do that on the Localization list. I'm afraid that generating more detailed documentation of the arcana of i18n / L10n will have to wait until I have a few more spare cycles then the present time. I went to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Techniques_and_Configuration#Installing_from_USB; and tried mkusbinstall OLPC_XS_LATEST.iso /dev/sdb1 . When i did that, i got the error: command not found. Who did you receive the server from? What deployment are you part of? The server -- can boot from USB or from a CD? Perhaps you can boot from a linux live CD or live USB to diagnose? cheers, m This is one of ours in Jamaica. I shipped the boxes, and it looks like Brian didn't get the instructions. I'll take care of it off list. cheers, Sameer On Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 5:00 PM, HALL,Brian C brian.hal...@uwimona.edu.jm wrote: Good Day, I recently received an OLPC school server. Unless something's changed recently since the last time I looked, the XO's wifi chip doesn't support hostapd. The best I've been able to kludge together (back when I used the XO as a portable XS to tote to training sessions) was a USB-Ethernet adapter on eth1 connected to an old Linksys AP. If wifi was available, the XO's WLAN worked as eth0. Anna Schoolfield Birmingham No virus found in this message.
