Quick thoughts on this: OLPCA are in touch with KA about getting permission to distribute their [NC-SA] videos to deployments, particularly in cases where we are building their servers or laptop images for them. [Server-devel] khan academy videos
There have been various requests to make khan academy videos more widely availalbe via school servers. Ceibal has been making a push to localize them into Spanish; on many occasions people have suggested finding a way to ensure the videos are available to offline schools. Has anyone done this so far, independently? Is there a spanish-language snapshot yet? I'm talking with people at Khan Academy interested in making this possible for OLPC to do formally in our builds. (the current NC-SA license makes this non-trivia). If you have been using these or similar videos on your own schoolservers, please share your experiences so far. Testing out 11.2 - in general, it is just great :-) I recall a lovely patch that sped up hover menu response significantly -- is that being considered for inclusion in a future release? When releases are made, the actual release processes I know of involve updates to a mailing list; the wiki simply reflects the latest updates that have been announced. Anyone following that release process can update the appropriate page (or, if they are not a wiki admin, ask an admin to do it). I would love to see a similar brief summary of the latest stable raw sugar and soas releases (stable and dev) as well - preferably on both the olpc-wiki and the sl-wiki. Here's a list of activities that I think would be great, both worth starring and worth having unstarred (it's a large enough list now that it's confusing to have them all on the home screen by default, but there are lots of great activities that people who know about them will want even when they're offline with no way to get new activities). There may be another 5-10 of these that are worth unstarring for a clean, useful firstboot home screen... I'm testing these over the weekend. OLPCorps classes had lovely stories about using both Micropolis and Moon with parents and students becoming interested because of those activities (Moon for religious reasons). Words still accumulates bad characters at the start of its input field if you keep using it and encounter words with accents, but it's also been very useful. Read Etexts is a bit redundant with Get Books, but it is lovely in its own focused way, and small. Some more comments from recent use and demos of my 1.5 w/ os32, some of which I'll put into trac. 1) Twice in half an hour I was able to get Sugar to stop redrawing when, while it had 5-6 activities open, someone hovered over the XO on the desktop to pull up the config menu. The menu would open, not display text, and the mouse and interface would stop working. journal/frame keys wouldn't work. ctrl-alt-del worked instantly in both cases to restart X. I couldn't dupliate on demand. 2) Infoslicer always claimed it couldn't reach the network to download articles even when browse had no trouble. 3) The network still shows three copies of every access point. 4) Both Browse and Firefox on Gnome don't load certain popular sites (see below). Indeed. Please tag those at the top with {{Migrated to sl.o}} but
don't blank the page. In this case you are moving a page that can be
edited and discussed to one that does not really support either (and
that has misleading metadata).
Last time I carried out a similar migration, we left the original
pages up for roughly 12 months, which is a good time-scale on which to
let wikis settle. It helps if the target page moved to is also
editable, annotatable, and history-preserving.

It seems that a great opportunity is missed on the browse from page for helping provide information to the students about their computer, about resources available to them, and possible connections to the school server. My moc-up can be found here (this is for demonstration, layout and design aspects can be changed and by that I mean improved) http://sixthcrusade.com/start.html The layout is pretty simple, using the YUI, i set up a few tabs with information in each. The first is the standard 'start' page where the student is going onto the net. Other tabs can be set up for specific subjects based on the needs of the classroom or OLPC itself. For example, a tab just on the XO with links to the GPL, where to get the code, etc, would help with one of the recent discussions on this list. There could be links to Python information, tutorials, or even an entire tab on Python. This set up will allow more robust information to get to the student beyond the simple start page. Also this helps with the not-so-quite intuitive bookmarks that browse currently offers. On a related note, TiddyWiki (http://tiddlywiki.com) now works in the Browse activity. This too could be set up as the homepage, again with sections pre-set up for use, but adding the ability for the student to add things to it, such as a daily journal, or collections of links and such. That goes directly to me for now, but in the future (maybe the very near future) I may decide to send it somewhere public, like a mailing list, instead. Wine and the code that I developed for this project are licensed under the GNU LGPL. The entire package isn't quite LGPL because I included 7-zip. 7-zip is LGPL + unRAR restriction (you're not allowed to use the source code to create a RAR compressor). If you have a program that works well in this Wine package and would like to package it as a stand-alone .xo, please let me know. I already did most of the work for this so that I could include 7-zip and a firefox downloader/installer (and I could probably have included firefox itself if not for the fact that it would require uploading non-open-source code to repo.or.cz). I think for the past 4 months or so, since we started to get double our previous traffic, significant steady use of our sites by Uruguay, and (in particular) a stronger dependence on w.l.o and l.o by deployments and press events, * we no longer have 'safe' times to take services down * we should be extra careful to maintain mirrors or readable versions of services durint maintenance of any sort * there are thousands of users who have never engaged with mailing lists, active wiki chats, or our community, but depend on our information and servers (wiki info, support, activation, bug tracking, c). Since when we started the G1G1 last year, OLPC became less and less inclined in discussing potentially embarrassing topics with the community in public lists. I keep meeting people who see the Sugar Labs effort as some kind of competitor to OLPC, or even a *fork*. And these are probably a small fraction who have been outspoken enough to say it. Our respective goals are distinct, but not necessarily incompatible. There's a lot of overlap that would make our long term relationship worthwhile in spite of the past. Walter Bender and Chuck Kane agreed to work together since before Sugar Labs was established. And many SL people also happen to be OLPC people, and vice-versa... so there is _already_ some kind of collaboration going on at some levels. What's needed at this point, IMHO, is a clear, open statement from OLPC that we're *really* committed to work together. Not merge, nor marry... but work together on the thing we both need: Sugar. Ben -- When you're zipping up the directory, if you add a metadata file in this subpath: library/library.info and give the resulting zip file the extension .xol, you'll have an XO library bundle. Yes, that's a fine baseline. As you point out, I had a hard time with the license field; enter what you like but please do include a full LICENSE file in the bundle that provides specific licenses (and attribution where required), image by image. If you download an xol file onto your xo from a webserver that has mimetypes set properly (such as w.l.o) it should automatically install itself into your Library/ directory. Shoebot, a free-software version of the awesome Mac program DrawBot (which relies heavily Cocoa), is finished. Testing gg-763-1 earlier today, running a number of activities for an hour. I later found that I could not restart or reboot via sugar; it would let me select the option from the right menu, but then a gray-circle process appeared in the top frame and nothing would happen. If I quit that process and tried again, the same result. I haven't been able to reproduce on systems that haven't been using activities for a while. It might be valuable to have a list for shorter, more specific announcements that includes a regular link to the community-news archive, and any major essays or press pieces, which we can broadcast to a much larger audience. If it is any help, Im sure there are many people in the community who would be happy to help (including me) with something like this, with keeping the general public and community informed in a more public fashion. There is generally a lot of good will towards the project around the world but real and positive public information is key to maintaining that good will. This is a good point. For instance, it would be useful to post and wikify the community-news archives on the wiki (this would both give them much higher google rank and help highlight red-links for a number of efforts, deployments, or concepts that deserve public descriptions but don't have their own page yet on our wiki). wireless lights on the XO : what should they do?
So we can control what the 'wireless' lights on the XO display / what causes them to turn on and off. I'd like wireless lights to indicate the volume of outgoing and incoming wireless traffic (frequency), whether one is connected to anything other than a local mesh (pattern within a given frequency), and the proximity of Bono (flicker/stutter/'electrical fainting' within a given pattern). The pedagogical specialists here tell me that concept maps are pretty hot in education right now. I'm a bit of a mindmapper/diagrammer type. If you're looking for free and Open Source you want to look at freemind. It's very competitive vs the commercial mapping tools and also supports a number of external file formats, it's another Java app so would need that extra install. http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page The other tool worth a poke is the more general purpose graphviz, also free and Open Source, it's command line but there are some GUI's out there also. It's rough and incomplete at my last testing, but seems to be a potentially interesting diagramming tool. Basically, there are two separate problems here, and we should not be solving them together. One is that the latest release may not be the greatest - because of bugfix releases. I agree with Eben's proposal of minor version numbers as a (totally optional) solution; as long as the minor/major separator is not a decimal separator (that is, [.,]), the meaning is pretty self-evident. (I think that : is the best candidate, by analogy with times and bible verses.) This is actually my primary concern. Ditto. I'm strongly in favor of supporting minor versions for this -- the notion of monotonically increasing 'version' is fundamentally misleading. Major.minor is less broken. Programming environments on the XO
There has been talk about expanding Pippy to support a variety of programming languages, perhaps as plugins; to add syntax highlighting; and general interest in seeing Develop proceed. Syntax highlighting in Write has been brought up as well. C and Javascript environments have been specifically highlighted, since C is used for a fair bit of code that we ship; but enthusiasts of Ruby and many other languages have considered providing an intro dev environment as a standalone activity, one per language. And HTML creation is possible in Write but without highlighting, and it is not obvious how to put this to good use. Finally, we now have activities for Etoys (Squeak), Scratch, and Turtle Art, but not yet a Logo activity; though a few people are working on the latter. Where are we with these developments? What plans are there to complete any of the above this year? What specific features should we schedule to support the above, and which is most important?
