 * A Linux port of the offline Khan Academy Web app (someone has already

subsets of videos you'd like to download).
 * A new XS build that includes a basic set of videos, or at least an

[Server-devel] khan academy videos

2011-12-09 Thread Samuel Klein
There have been various requests to make khan academy videos more widely
availalbe via school servers. Ceibal has been making a push to localize
them into Spanish; on many occasions people have suggested finding a way to
ensure the videos are available to offline schools.

Has anyone done this so far, independently? Is there a spanish-language
snapshot yet? I'm talking with people at Khan Academy interested in making
this possible for OLPC to do formally in our builds. (the current NC-SA
license makes this non-trivia).

If you have been using these or similar videos on your own schoolservers,
please share your experiences so far.

[Server-devel] Fwd: Marvell plugs and book servers at schools

2011-11-04 Thread Samuel Klein
Forwarding to server-devel. Thoughts welcome, particularly from groups
that have implemented their own variation on a bookserver or content
server... or have worked with Guru Sheeva plugs in the past.

-- Forwarded message --

Sameer has been working with a Sheeva Plug / Pathagar server dedicated
solely to being a local book server for a school/region. (Intended
initially to work in an offline, low-power part of uttar pradesh) I wrote
about it, and it was presented to an audience @ the internet archive last
week:

http://blog.laptop.org/2011/10/28/book-server-01/comment-page-1/#comment-13790

I'd like to help him update his v 0.01 of the bookserver to a design that
includes an AP - perhaps an integrated Guru Plug?

This isn't currently about schoolservers, but one day the bookserver setup
could be merged into a future XS build. And many schoolserver forks
implement some variation on a bookserver.

I don't know how synchronous would work - but that sounds like a
feature for bookreaders.

Asynchronously, there are regular requests for both a share [file]

and a way to share public Journal items constantly while online; as
comes up in both global shared datastore and share files over the

I'd argue that some of this is duplication of functionality that

devel announce list; publicizing major software firmware updates

IMHO, someone at OLPC should be the one updating the infobox on the
OLPC wiki as it implies a degree of support from OLPC that the
 community cannot presume.

When releases are made, the actual release processes I know of involve
updates to a mailing list; the wiki simply reflects the latest updates
that have been announced. Anyone following that release process can
update the appropriate page (or, if they are not a wiki admin, ask an

I would love to see a similar brief summary of the latest stable raw

Below is the text version of the press release OLPC and Marvell issued this
morning, announcing our agreement to work together on the tablet-based
efforts we've been calling XO-3.0 and Marvell has been calling Moby (both
previously announced).  The link takes you to the same document with a few
 pictures.

We're just starting this cooperation, so there are things we don't know yet,
but the release pretty well covers what we do know.  I think it's important
to recognize that our goal with Marvell is to work with them to make a family
of tablet products possible, not all of which will be OLPC products.
That's something new, and potentially confusing, but we think it can really
help us both broaden the community working with us, and help drive our own
product costs down by increasing volumes.

In some of the press interviews around this release, there's discussion of
the goal of introducing something at CES 2011 (in January).  That's important
to Marvell, but that device will certainly not be an XO-3.0 and probably
won't be an OLPC product at all.  But it's one of the steps along the way.
Remember that this cooperation is intended to help our goals as well as
Marvell's goals, so some of the things announced from the partnership won't
be things directly pertinent to OLPC's product plans.

As we've previously announced, our XO-1.75 product, bringing a Marvell
ARM-based motherboard to the current XO-1 laptop platform, is the next
product release in our efforts to provide ARM-based, lower-power devices to
 achieve our mission.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a global organization whose mission is to help
provide every child in the world access to a modern education, and Marvell, a
worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, have agreed to jointly
develop a family of next-generation OLPC XO tablet computers based on the
Marvell® Moby reference design.  This new partnership will provide designs
and technologies to enable a range of new educational tablets, delivered by
OLPC and other education industry leaders, aimed at schools in both the U.S.
and developing markets. Marvell is also announcing today it has launched
Mobylize, a campaign aimed at improving technology adoption in America's
 classrooms.

The new family of XO tablets will incorporate elements and new capabilities
based on feedback from the nearly 2 million children and families around the
world who use the current XO laptop.  The XO tablet, for example, will
require approximately one watt of power to operate (compared to about 5 watts
necessary for the current XO laptop).  The XO tablet will also feature a
multi-lingual soft keyboard with touch feedback, enabling it to serve
millions more children who speak virtually any language anywhere in the world.

The device is also decidedly constructionist in nature.  By design, it
combines hardware and software to deliver a platform that will enable
educators, students and families around the world to create their own
content, and learn to read, write, and create their own education programs
and share all of these experiences via a mesh network model.  The device will
also feature an application to directly access more than 2 million free books
 available across the Internet.

While devices like eReaders and current tablets are terrific literary, media
and entertainment platforms, they don't meet the needs of an educational
model based on making things, versus just consuming them.  Today's learning
environments require robust platforms for computation, content creation and
experimentation – and all that at a very low cost, said Dr. Nicholas
Negroponte, Founder and Chairman of One Laptop per Child.  Through our
partnership with Marvell, OLPC will continue our focus on designing computers
that enable children in the developing world to learn through collaboration,
as well as providing connectivity to the world's body of knowledge.

Marvell has made a long-term commitment to improving education and inspiring
 a revolution in the

Sarah, thank you.

So you suggest including WeSay in our Gnome builds - that's an
interesting idea, and something that Yama mentioned a year ago...
certainly suitable for the OLPC devel list. That's also the place to
discuss Mono in general, necessary if this were to become a
widespread effort.

Do you work with developers who could help make a Sugar activity out
of wesay as well? It would be nice to offer it as a download to the

Thanks Henry. Mako, my friend Sarah Ogilvie has something that would
add a lot of value to the OLPC, I think, extending its immediate
useful value to new groups, and do a lot of good at the same time.
 ccing Sarah here.
Here is what Sarah said about her project:
My idea is to put simple dictionary-making software on the OLPC XO
laptops, so that speakers of endangered languages can document their
languages. We are living in an era in which an average of one

language disappears every two weeks, and my project at the
University of Cambridge (Endangered Languages and Dictionaries)
looks at how we can write innovative dictionaries that are
collaborative, community-focussed, and help facilitate language
 preservation and revitalization.
 http://www.lucy-cav.cam.ac.uk/pages/the-college/people/sarah-ogilvie/elad1.php

There are various options for simple software which are perfectly
suited to the XO laptops, and I would be happy to discuss the issue
further. This could be another important extension of the OLPC
project and its vision to use technology as a means of bringing
freedom and empowerment to children. I would be delighted to help in
 any way.

Another Straw Man argument. What I said was Android OS solves exactly
the same *problems* Sugar has been created to solve. You know while you
have noticed correctly that Android was created to be a phone OS and
Sugar was created to be a learning OS (not too that hard to notice
though), they had almost the same *problems* to solve. Because they had
different goals they did not solve exactly the same problem set (it was
an exaggeration in my sentence) but close (self hosting dev tools and
local communication are the main differences).

That said, I find Noise's line of reasoning here compelling. What
are specific features of the current Sugar experience that people
think would be hard to port to Android [porting Etoys might in fact be
hard]?

RE: Wanted: List of Sugar activities for the XO-1.5

2009-12-05 Thread Samuel Klein
Here's a list of activities that I think would be great, both worth starring
and worth having unstarred (it's a large enough list now that it's confusing
to have them all on the home screen by default, but there are lots of great
activities that people who know about them will want even when they're
offline with no way to get new activities).

There may be another 5-10 of these that are worth unstarring for a clean,
useful firstboot home screen... I'm testing these over the weekend.

OLPCorps classes had lovely stories about using both Micropolis and Moon
with parents and students becoming interested because of those activities
(Moon for religious reasons).

Words still accumulates bad characters at the start of its input field if
you keep using it and encounter words with accents, but it's also been very
useful.

Read Etexts is a bit redundant with Get Books, but it is lovely in its own
focused way, and small.

OOo4kids and Gcompris (a suitable subset) would be excellent additions...
both have sizeable development communities compared to most of the
activities here

 Hi,

How about suggestions for programs on the Gnome side?

 That's a good idea, thanks.

I haven't decided what to do about OpenOffice yet -- at the moment we
don't ship it, but do ship abiword and gnumeric. The options for it
 look something like:

 * just add the openoffice.org Fedora packages for GNOME.
(How much disk space would that use?)

 * just add the Ooo4Kids activity for Sugar.

 * just add the Ooo4Kids activity for Sugar, *and* find a way to make
the same activity launchable inside GNOME. This would need Ooo4Kids
to be useful for older kids as well, since they're the target
audience for using GNOME instead of Sugar.

 The OOo4Kids activity is here:

 http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/addon/4241 (100MB)

Perhaps someone could try out OOo4Kids, see how it compares to
standard OpenOffice, and see how much disk space adding the full
 OpenOffice packages would require?

 Thanks!

2009-10-16 Thread Samuel Klein
Some more comments from recent use and demos of my 1.5 w/ os32, some
of which I'll put into trac.

1) Twice in half an hour I was able to get Sugar to stop redrawing
when, while it had 5-6 activities open, someone hovered over the XO on
the desktop to pull up the config menu. The menu would open, not
display text, and the mouse and interface would stop working.
journal/frame keys wouldn't work. ctrl-alt-del worked instantly in
both cases to restart X. I couldn't dupliate on demand.

2) Infoslicer always claimed it couldn't reach the network to download
articles even when browse had no trouble.

3) The network still shows three copies of every access point.

4) Both Browse and Firefox on Gnome don't load certain popular sites
(see below).

For me, the XO-1.5 is a performer -- it runs many many Activities, plus

No definite agreement has been made, but in preliminary chats, it seems
that both organizations agree that anything for XS or specific to XO hardware
should go in OLPC, and everything else (general Sugar improvements,
frameworks, or activities) should go in Sugarlabs.

We discussed this at XO camp, and people from Sugar Labs were
considering not supporting activity development and focusing on core
sugar development. Has this changed? In general, do you expect that
priorities for toolchain and activity development will be the same?

I expect that many activity development and student projects
interested in working with current schools will apply for both OLPC
and Sugar Labs projects; they are welcome to apply to both, and those
doing work relevant to Sugar should be encouraged to! Applying to
multiple GSOC groups is standard practice; students do not need to
choose. We had a couple of students last year who ended up working on
OLPC related projects for other orgs.

expected with just one org. We actually got only 2,

 features/roadmap pages and subpages.

 * Can someone with rights please update http://dev.laptop.org/roadmap to
add a prominent link to [[Future releases]] and kill off the dead
 milestones.

 * Is the Joyride stream obsolete rather than temporarily not working as
 designed?

 * If there are specific XO features that are going away in this new
world (e.g. Rainbow, Bitfrost, olpc-update, the Software update Sugar
control panel, press O to revert to previous image, ?), they should be
listed in a new Not applicable section of
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Enabling_XO_features_on_other_distributions
and their wiki pages somehow flagged with a {{does not apply in new

Re: Google summer of Code?

2009-02-09 Thread Samuel Klein
Thanks Peter! OLPC are definitely participating tihs year. We should
pull together a good list of both sugar and OLPC projects.

On the OLPC wiki, this means updating two pages
  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Summer_of_Code
  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Summer_of_Code/2009/Ideas

The latter needs a new page. SL should set up one as well, assuming
they are doing SOC.

Speaking entirely as a volunteer: the answer depends on who you ask.

Since I think that 8.2.0 wasn't half bad, I'm currently trying to persuade
people who feel similarly to work with me to assemble an 8.2.2 with some
 useful
bugfixes and software updates, because I think that

   a) it's the right thing to do

   b) it will complement various upstream efforts (both in Fedora, Sugar Labs,
and the wider FOSS community at large) by helping to concentrate
deployment-specific testing effort on the most relevant parts of
  their work

   c) that it's important to deliver a product which directly meets the needs
 of
existing deployments even when those needs don't precisely match the
 needs
and goals of the larger upstream communities.

Does this help clarify the situation?

 Michael

P.S. - My current ideal list of changes would include:

   * fix the memory stability issue
   * ship the new gabble w/ support for out-of-band stream tubes
   * ship the latest gnash

and I'd be very happy to discuss shipping various sugar or platform updates as
 well; e.g. java.

What do you want to see in a new release?

We do have a Nepali volunteer Vrishank Khanal who is trying to figure

Subject: Greetings from the Eastern Townships School Board Quebec Canada
 To: s...@laptop.org

 Good afternoon Samuel,

I have assembled a team of four experts in the field of laptop
technology and deployment who are finalizing the presentation for next
Friday, the 16th of January. We are very excited to present and have
reviewed the agenda as well as the format of the week.

For information purposes, our School Board, the Eastern Townships
School Board is one of the few school districts in North America to
have provided free wireless laptops to all
 students/teachers/administrators/trustees from Grades 3-11, including
our two adult education centres. We began our deployment in 2003 and
have acquired much expertise and knowledge on the keys to successful
deployments of technology in education. We remain one of Canada's
best kept secrets because we have witnessed a less than enthusiastic
endorsement of the role of technology in the classroom. Please take a
look at our website: www.etsb.qc.ca and look under the Enhanced
 Learning Strategy.

The OLPC represents a major and significant shift in paradigms in
education and sharing with you and your colleagues our experiences
will hopefully make the deployments in other countries easier.

The US Department of Education have used our pedagogical and
technological rubrics and posted it on their website, since they
acknowledged our important work in this area as well.

All of this expertise was fully appreciated by our education
colleagues in Uruguay, who signed a partnership agreement with our
School Board, to assist them in the deployment of the OLPC laptops
throughout the country. We visited Uruguay and also had delegations
from Uruguay visit our schools. As you can understand, we are also
receiving inquiries from other countries, most recently from the
ambassador of South Africa who wants our School Board to provide
further information on how laptops can make a difference in their
schools. I can include Paraguay and Peru as well.

We also concluded an agreement with the world famous Cirque du Soleil,
in which we provide education to the minor artists of their shows,
synchronously, from our head office in Quebec.

All of this to say that, fully understanding the major upheaval that
the OLPC personnel have just experienced, we look forward to seeing
you on the 16th of January,

 Sincerely,

 Ron Canuel
 Director General
 Eastern Townships School Board

My personal opinion is that audio posted with a copy of the presentation

G1G1 updates, Lennon video and other vids

2008-12-27 Thread Samuel Klein
Hi,

The Lennon video that's been murmured about for weeks has been
released. I'm curious to see reactions from the list. If anyone
makes a screensaver version of the opening sequence, which I love,
I'll send you my first attempt at a memory-doubled XO. I'm hoping to
get more details about how it was made to post as well... It's had
50,000 views (wow, make that 65k since I wrote this draft at lunch) in
the past day. Details and a couple other awesome video links are up
on the blog.
  http://blog.laptop.org

Quick G1G1 updates :
1. The first batch of international G1G1 machines should all have
arrived this week, in time for Christmas.
Some people in Europe weren't sure about when the program is ending;
while we didn't announce a specific date, it is likely to stop after
December 31st.
While there was been discussion about continuing G1G1 for a short
while longer in the US, that may end at the same time.
   http://blog.laptop.org/2008/12/24/g1g1-international-update/

2. There is a form you can fill out if you'd like OLPC to mail a
thank-you card to someone when you donate on their behalf, and a
downloadable PDF of the card you can send directly:
   http://laptop.org/thankyou/donationform.html
   http://laptop.org/thankyou/OLPC_GiftCard.pdf

I hope we can use a lot of these for the ongoing give-a-school program
(whatever it is called!). If you make translations (of the form or
card), post details to localization@ and web-t...@laptop .

Thanks, Jacob. It would be good to see other very different designs
for the front page as well.

I think it's important to include easy ways to
 - search for help and info about OLPC/XO/Sugar [with links to Help activity?]
 - learn about python / smalltalk / C / source / programming in general
 - search the web [with options for diff. engines]
 - search the computer [for documents / metadata; with links to journal-search?]

TiddlyWiki in my experience is easy to mess up and be unable to
restore... are there solutions for this now?

My moc-up can be found here (this is for demonstration, layout and design
aspects can be changed and by that I mean improved)

 http://sixthcrusade.com/start.html

The layout is pretty simple, using the YUI, i set up a few tabs with
information in each. The first is the standard 'start' page where the student
is going onto the net. Other tabs can be set up for specific subjects based
on the needs of the classroom or OLPC itself.

For example, a tab just on the XO with links to the GPL, where to get the
code, etc, would help with one of the recent discussions on this list. There
could be links to Python information, tutorials, or even an entire tab on
 Python.

This set up will allow more robust information to get to the student beyond
the simple start page. Also this helps with the not-so-quite intuitive
 bookmarks that browse currently offers.

On a related note, TiddyWiki (http://tiddlywiki.com) now works in the Browse
activity. This too could be set up as the homepage, again with sections
pre-set up for use, but adding the ability for the student to add things to
it, such as a daily journal, or collections of links and such.

Either the YUI example or the TiddlyWiki could be used, or both in some
combination (YUI as home page with link to the wiki)

 these are just my thoughts/suggestions.

 following oddities:

 1. When I later resumed the activity from the journal, the wallpaper

 2. It was not clear to me how to save wine's state to the journal.

 3. At some point the usual 'leave full-screen mode' icon appeared in
the upper-right corner, but clicking it seemed to have no effect other
than to make it disappear, i.e. no sugar UI appeared and the desktop
 size did not change.

 4. Wine crashed when I used Firefox's download manager to open the
location of a downloaded file (winefile appeared briefly, then the
whole activity crashed.) I have no idea why yet, but perhaps there is
some information left in a log file somewhere I will find.

On the bright side, this means it's fairly trivial to run at least

run Windows programs using Wine in the Sugar environment. It should be
good enough that someone used to Windows can grab and install a
Windows program without help, once the activity is installed. Ideally,
the installer and software will both work fine in Wine and within the
hardware limitations of an XO. In this ideal case, someone used to
Windows should be able to operate it without help.

If it does not live up to this ideal for platinum software (according
to the Wine appdb) whose hardware requirements the XO meets, I want to
know about it and hopefully fix it.

Wine bugs and hardware limitations mean a lot of Windows programs
won't work or won't work properly. On Linux, one can often push the
compatibility much further than what works out of the box by looking
at console messages (the log viewer works for this) and tweaking Wine.
Don't expect everything to work perfectly, but don't give up if it
doesn't. This is normal, even on Linux.

Winehq.org has support channels for such cases (appdb, bugzilla,
mailing lists, and the winehq irc channel). Most of the people there
probably don't know anything about Sugared Wine, but collectively they
should know more than I do about making Wine work in general. If a
program doesn't work for you, you can go to any of those places for
support. You can also email sugaredw...@codeweavers.com. That goes
directly to me for now, but in the future (maybe the very near future)
I may decide to send it somewhere public, like a mailing list,
 instead.

Wine and the code that I developed for this project are licensed under
the GNU LGPL. The entire package isn't quite LGPL because I included
7-zip. 7-zip is LGPL + unRAR restriction (you're not allowed to use
the source code to create a RAR compressor).

If you have a program that works well in this Wine package and would
like to package it as a stand-alone .xo, please let me know. I already
did most of the work for this so that I could include 7-zip and a
firefox downloader/installer (and I could probably have included
firefox itself if not for the fact that it would require uploading
 non-open-source code to repo.or.cz).

Agreed.

Since when we started the G1G1 last year, OLPC became less and less
inclined in discussing potentially embarrassing topics with the

I keep meeting people who see the Sugar Labs effort as some kind of
competitor to OLPC, or even a *fork*. And these are probably a small
fraction who have been outspoken enough to say it.

Our respective goals are distinct, but not necessarily incompatible.
There's a lot of overlap that would make our long term relationship
worthwhile in spite of the past.

Walter Bender and Chuck Kane agreed to work together since before
Sugar Labs was established. And many SL people also happen to be OLPC
people, and vice-versa... so there is _already_ some kind of
collaboration going on at some levels.

What's needed at this point, IMHO, is a clear, open statement from
OLPC that we're *really* committed to work together. Not merge, nor
marry... but work together on the thing we both need: Sugar.

Or maybe just say: NEVER, GET LOST!!! ;-)

Now I have Dawn Upshaw singing in my subconscious. Thanks a lot.

What does commitment mean here? for some people, including me, I have
a hard time imagining the opposite, so I guess it's easy for some
people to take this for granted and for others to be overly sensitive
and assume it would not happen.

When you're zipping up the directory, if you add a metadata file in
this subpath:

and give the resulting zip file the extension .xol, you'll have an XO

Here is a sample info file, with all required fields :
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Image:Yay-bee-see-library.info
Note that the 'name' field in the info file should match the name of
the root directory.

Our standard is to increment the version # in the metadata every time
you make a change; that allows tools like Sugar's software updater
know when there are newer versions of packages available to install.

One suggestion, 1600x1200 seems a bit large (even as a max size). For the

When you're zipping up the directory, if you add a metadata file in
 this subpath:
  library/library.info

and give the resulting zip file the extension .xol, you'll have an XO
 library bundle.

I recently wrote some software for use by my daughter on her OLPC. It
runs inside the Browse activity, either locally using a file: URI or
over the network. I don't know whether it will be of interest to
anyone else, but I have released the software to the public domain and
packaged it along with scaled-down (1600x1200 or less) copies of some
 public-domain images and some copyrighted-but-free-to-redistribute
images under GFDL, and various Creative Commons Attribution-Share

for each image is included in the application source code.

Seems a great addition for the younger age range :-)

I did notice that even on a high specced laptop (1.5Ghz, 2Gb ram, broadband
connection) the background image was very slow to display (until it had
 been
 cached locally).

One suggestion, 1600x1200 seems a bit large (even as a max size). For the
XO, 800x600 (max!) would seem to be a fair max image size to save nand
 space
and keep image quality. The XO screen is capable of 1200x900 in
 black/white,
and 800x600 seems a reasonable number for it's colour resolution abilities:

 overview:

I wrote some software using DHTML (JavaScript, HTML and CSS.) It's to
help learn letters and numbers, and is intended to be used with adult
supervision and involvement. It is fairly easy to customize it to use
different images and support different alphabets simply by editing the
contents of the style element in the HTML file.

The software is very, very, very simple — it just echoes typed letters
and numbers in a large, colorful font and shows a somewhat-relevant
background image for each one. The images are various freely-usable
ones I found on Wikipedia or in the Wikimedia Commons. View source

ShoeBot (a free software DrawBot implementation) is out! Time to Sugarize some Ruby apps?

2008-11-09 Thread Samuel Klein
Shoebot, a free-software version of the awesome Mac program DrawBot
(which relies heavily Cocoa), is finished. Thanks to David Crossland
who tipped me off to this.
   http://www.tinkerhouse.net/shoebot/
   http://tinkerhouse.net/shoebot/Docs/Screenshots

From its getting started page:

== Shoebot from the console ==

Shoebot parses scripts written in the Nodebox/Drawbot language and
creates image output from those instructions. Running Shoebot scripts
through the console is straightforward:sbot yourscript.bot -o
outputfile

You can specify the type of image through the output file extension:

* .svg (Scalable Vector Graphics)
* .ps (PostScript)
* .pdf (Portable Document Format)
* .png (Portable Network Graphics)

Shoebot will automagically generate the appropriate output from the
extension you specify.
For instance, to output the primitives.bot example to an SVG file, type:
   sbot /usr/share/shoebot/examples/primitives.bot -o test.svg

This is Shoebot's 'oneshot mode'. However, see also:
* WindowedMode
* Shoebot IDE
* Socketserver - control your scripts from external sources
* Python Module - run Shoebot from inside your Python scripts

It's written in Ruby, and shouldn't be so hard to sugarize... are
there any other fine Ruby programs that have jumped the XO?
A ruby emulator bundled with Hackety Hack lessons also seems like an
excellent idea.

more than about 5 months. We need to break that cycle and try to figure out
how to get the *most important* work started right away, whether that work

In the past we have divided tasks into next release and future

Yes, I very much agree with this sentiment, so I don't think we disagree
much on the overall goals but need to reach a bit more consensus on the
implementation details. I just want to acknowledge that the *some* piece
we can do now might not produce anything shippable in a 9.1 timeframe. Or
perhaps it's something shippable but not usable, so we do ship something in
9.1 that's really only a partial implementation so not many users need to
know or care about it. I'm OK with considering any approach that lets us
start that kind of work soon.

there might be increased support costs. As Ian mentions, and from my
own limited exposure to people requesting support, having security
turned on leads to greater support costs than having it off would.

The only people who see any support costs one way or another are the
fairly technical people who know what it means to try to update their
system.

--SJ

 You're
ready, willing, and able to ship such laptops to any country that
orders them that way. Why shouldn't G1G1 users be testing *that*
 configuration?

If G1G1 was aimed at fully debugging the configuration for your
largest deployments, you'd be shipping them with Spanish keyboards and
Spanish-language messages (and with school server install CDs).

 Michael:
P.S. - As others have suggested, please do not assume that any
individual on this list speaks for everyone else involved; in almost all
cases, they speak only for themselves (but for their clique with
whatever measure of authority they happen to hold).

I assume the reason we're having this discussion is because the silent
decider, whoever that is, decided (or defaulted) to jail the upcoming
G1G1 laptops. If not, they could end it rather quickly by merely
announcing that our concern was merely a problem of communication.

Such small hassles, when repeated across hundreds of thousands of
people, tend to eat up a lot of time. We should be trying to save users
 this time.

As I said in June, afaic G1G1 machines should all be sent out with
developer keys.

http://lists.laptop.org/pipermail/security/2008-June/000426.html

Kim made two related points:

1 - Assuming we get to the point where upgrading is an easy click
from the G1G1 machine, then we want to be sure that people don't
 mistakenly load non-signed images. If you are not a developer;
doesn't this add a level of protection that we want for 90% of G1G1
 recipients?

I don't think this is the sort of security people need -- again, those
90% aren't going to be trying updates in the first place. If we want
to add a required --security=off flag to the olpc-update command to
indicate that you recognize you are installing an unsecured build,
that's fine.

2 - I believe our support issues will go up significantly as people
who have little or no experience are encouraged to download all
sorts of untested builds with no easy way to get back to a
 working system.
To feel better about the support issues, I would like the one-button
push that restores a laptop to factory default.

I don't know about the former; the latter is a great idea.

These feel to me like useful things to address for 8.2.1, though not
for the initial g1g1 images.

SJ

We'll save everyone who wants to install non-standard builds the time
required to learn about and obtain developer keys. We'll save the
support costs required to process and answer all the queries about
developer keys. And we'll reduce the infrastructural costs of managing
 the generation of the keys.

We don't have to frame it as us vs. them. We can just announce the
state of current deployments, and discuss plans for future deployments
and G1G1, including whatever can be said in public about the Microsoft
trials. Everybody wants to know what's up with the Amazon deal, too.

We could have a formulaic please check out our latest public
announcements email, and a list that media orgs can sign up to to
receive regular pointers to longer announcements. Something between
the sporadic Press Release and the detailed weekly community-news
blurbs.

I believe there is an internal newsletter, why doesn't OLPC have a monthly
public news feed that is on the main website that talks about stuff
happening which would give the world (and community trying to support OLPC)
the information we all need :) The amount of times I've had people both from
the FOSS community and the general community ask me what is going on is
crazy, and damaging. And I'm not even on the inside, I'm just involved with
 some regional projects!

As mentioned elsewhere, we have a community-news list
(http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/community-news), but it only goes
out to some 2000 people. It might be valuable to have a list for
shorter, more specific announcements that includes a regular link to
the community-news archive, and any major essays or press pieces,
which we can broadcast to a much larger audience.

If it is any help, Im sure there are many people in the community who would
be happy to help (including me) with something like this, with keeping the
general public and community informed in a more public fashion. There is
generally a lot of good will towards the project around the world but real
and positive public information is key to maintaining that good will.

This is a good point. For instance, it would be useful to post and
wikify the community-news archives on the wiki (this would both give
them much higher google rank and help highlight red-links for a number
of efforts, deployments, or concepts that deserve public descriptions
but don't have their own page yet on our wiki).

  owner.

 ...

The first point seems solvable if they just install Java afterwards.
Then we don't need to worry about licenses. Its a big install but
probably not a deal breaker. The performance may be challenging but
again I think we can make it fit.

The second point is a tougher problem. Alberto thinks they could
re-write the application to work with tiled windows so they all fit on
the XO. The other idea I have heard is that we could run an activity
which is X-Windows. Then you could launch this activity within that
  one.
That may affect performance and would need testing. For the first idea
of rebuilding the Cmap tools for sugar, we would need engineers to
  work
on that which brings me to the third point.

I'm not sure what free but not open source means. I think it means
  that
we can not take a snapshot of their code and fork it nor can we modify
it and push it back to them. We need to find a way for Alberto to hire
more engineers if we want them to improve the implementation for the
  XO.

The only good idea so far is the X-windows in Sugar idea.

I'm open to other suggestions on this. Questions and comments
  welcome too.

I know of one opportunity in Latin America which is being held up by
this. There may be more in the future, we'll see. The pedagogical
specialists here tell me that concept maps are pretty hot in education
right now. They also pointed me to a commercial tool which some
  schools
  use: http://www.inspirationsoftware.com/

Does anyone know of an open source solution in this area?

 I'm a bit of a mindmapper/diagrammer type. If you're looking for free
and Open Source you want to look at freemind. It's very competitive vs
the commercial mapping tools and also supports a number of external
file formats, it's another Java app so would need that extra install.

http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

The other tool worth a poke is the more general purpose graphviz, also
free and Open Source, it's command line but there are some GUI's out
there also. Could be a very nice Activity to wrap a simple GTK GUI
 around the tool chain:

http://www.graphviz.org/

Also want to point you to the Model activity if you've not tried it.
It's rough and incomplete at my last testing, but seems to be a
potentially interesting diagramming tool. The wiki talks of easily
sketch and simulate system dynamics models which seemed a pretty
scary opening paragraph – I'd be happy with just a good diagramming
tool :-) Dev work seems to have gone quiet :-(

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Model

If the customers want cmap tools, my first choice is to make that
  work.
That's what I'm focusing on right now albeit lower priority than
  shipping 8.2 :-).

Re: [sugar] Activity versioning schema

2008-07-16 Thread Samuel Klein
Basically, there are two separate problems here, and we should not
be solving them together. One is that the latest release may not be
the greatest - because of bugfix releases. I agree with Eben's proposal
of minor version numbers as a (totally optional) solution; as long as
the minor/major separator is not a decimal separator (that is, [.,]), the

meaning is pretty self-evident. (I think that : is the best candidate, by

analogy with times and bible verses.)
This is actually my primary concern.

Ditto. I'm strongly in favor of supporting minor versions for this -- the
notion of monotonically increasing 'version' is fundamentally misleading.
Major.minor is less broken.

Programming environments on the XO

2008-07-16 Thread Samuel Klein
There has been talk about expanding Pippy to support a variety of
programming languages, perhaps as plugins; to add syntax highlighting; and
general interest in seeing Develop proceed. Syntax highlighting in Write
has been brought up as well. C and Javascript environments have been
specifically highlighted, since C is used for a fair bit of code that we
ship; but enthusiasts of Ruby and many other languages have considered
providing an intro dev environment as a standalone activity, one per
language. And HTML creation is possible in Write but without highlighting,
and it is not obvious how to put this to good use.

Finally, we now have activities for Etoys (Squeak), Scratch, and Turtle Art,
but not yet a Logo activity; though a few people are working on the latter.

Where are we with these developments? What plans are there to complete any
of the above this year? What specific features should we schedule to
support the above, and which is most important?
