For the reasons James pointed out, it's not easily solvable for the
find the best thing to do, quickly.

Ad hoc works well for very small groups (6) -- and in that case you
want them all to be in the same channel... to be able to communicate!
:-) It's for the under a tree scenario, no access points around.

If there is a lot of interference, it means there are lots of APs.
Just make one AP available to the XOs ;-)

How would you propose measuring interference levels, and how long would
this measurement be allowed to take?  The measurement would delay the
setup of the ad-hoc network on the laptop.  The measurement would
require the participation of another node in the ad-hoc network.  If
another node is not available, how long should the laptop wait before
giving up on the measurement?
