Thanks. Sorted.

I'll have to try and remember that when the next update is rolled out.

[SailfishDevel] Locale Settings Incorrect?

2018-05-01 Thread Chris Walker
I've checked the settings on my host machine and it reports
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_GB.UTF-8" as I might reasonably expect. I am in
the UK after all. So why, when I ask for the locale in QML in the
Emulator does it report en_us?

Is there a setting somewhere in VBox that sets this? I've looked but
can't find anything.

you're interested in -> show device settings.

I've specified both Car Kit and Multimedia at various times to
overcome the timeout (see above). The audio system in my car (2011
Citroen C5) is a Philips system.

Have you specified any connection settings for the car? On my Jolla 1,
I used to have mine specified as car kit and calls to the phone would
work and it would stay connected. Despite specifying 'Car Kit' on my X,
it connects but drops the connection after a couple of minutes.

Hopefully there will be a permanent fix soon from the Sailors for these

Many thanks for that. I've updated the code and the page now looks

OK. Thanks for that.

I'll have to take a look at the coding on the cover page too then as
that icon is quite small. Or is the preferred method to have a scalable
SVG file there? I notice that in a new project there is this line :-
SAILFISHAPP_ICONS = 86x86 108x108 128x128 256x256

Is the project expecting an icon for each of those sizes or if I
produce an icon for 86x86 and 256x256, will the intermediary sizes be
auto generated when the app runs, assuming that a device needs those
intermediary sizes?

[SailfishDevel] Change of positioning in QML

2017-10-15 Thread Chris Walker
I have now added one of my own apps to my new Xperia and I've noticed
that the positioning of the items on a QML page has changed. Some of
them are being overwritten.

Is this down to some change within the latest OS on Xperia (my original
Jolla phone is running 2.1.2.3) or my coding?

The code is here -
https://github.com/tonercloud/beertent/blob/master/qml/pages/BeerListPage.qml

I could attach a couple of screenshots and will do so if asked but
thought it wise not to clutter up people's inboxes.

As a beer drinker, I am a member of CAMRA - http://www.camra.org.uk/

They have an app for iOS and Android and while I do have the Android
app on my phone I think it's awful. So I'm trying to write an app to
use the CAMRA database which happens to be a sqlite file. CAMRA update
the app and data annually and I want to be able to simply overwrite the
existing database with the new one each year but retain my own database
for noting things like which beers I've drunk.

I've checked with the company that wrote the app for CAMRA and they say
that they try to maintain the same database structure and numbering
each year but it falls to CAMRA to maintain the numbering as they
supply the data to the app company. I'm assuming (perhaps naively) that
it will remain constant.

I might also have another app for noting which pubs I've visited as
CAMRA list pub data in the same sqlite database.

I checked the known-issues list and this one wasn't there.

One issue I've discovered is that when looking at the Components app in
the Emulator, and following the selection to Dialogs -> Time Selection,
I no longer have a round clock but a purple square one. Is this
intentional or an infelicity? (64-bit Mageia linux and VBox v5).

I have to say that I'm not in favour of the removal of the smooth glide
such as when deleting something. I much prefer the glide to the 1
second jumps now apparent. I'd like to know the thinking behind that
one.

This happens when you launch Qt Creator from the dock, and not from
terminal. In this case, /usr/local/bin is not in the PATH, and the
VBoxManage binary cannot be found.
To fix it, create a symlink as root in /usr/bin that points to
/usr/local/bin/VBoxManage.

# cd /usr/bin
# sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/VBoxManage

Apparently the VirtualBox tools have moved to /usr/local/bin recently.

Hope this helps some people who are experiencing the same problem,

The big thing about Acorn is that they designed both the hardware and
the software, much like Apple and of course, partly like Jolla. That's
the reason I support them.

Intel even built an ARM CPU for the Risc PC. It was a 200MHz device,
called a StrongARM and superceded the ARM3 device my machine had in it,
itself an upgrade from the 33MHz ARM3 device which in turn had been an
upgrade from the ARM2 it originally shipped with. But Intel gave up the
design. The ARM design has improved considerably since.

Much like you've suggested the Youtube video, I would suggest RPCEmu ;-)

I think you're both overlooking history.

In the past there was a British computer company called Acorn. They
made the BBC Micro in the 80's. They also started Acorn Risc Machines.
They spun it off as a separate company as they realised the company
would be more profitable if it were a separate entity. They also
changed the name to Advanced Risc Machines. That company today is ARM,
is profitable and is a multi-billion dollar company while Acorn is no
more.

The reason they changed the name is that they knew that more companies
would buy their software designs if it weren't tied to a hardware
company.

So while the phone hardware side *may* die - I hope it doesn't - I see
a strong future for the software side.

As for targeting the BRICS countries, that seems a sensible choice. Why
battle against Android in their own backyard? Americans seem keener on
something that was invented there.

[SailfishDevel] More SDK Warnings

2015-07-09 Thread Chris Walker
In one of the recent SDK updates I noticed that I started to see
warnings like these :-

[W] DeclarativeImageProvider::DeclarativeImageProvider:89 - No pixel
ratio defined. Check your device configuration!
[W] DeclarativeImageProvider::DeclarativeImageProvider:94 - Defaulting
to pixel ratio 1.0
[W] DeclarativeWindow::DeclarativeWindow:82 - No default allowed
orientations defined. Check your device configuration!
[W] Silica::ThemePrivate::ThemePrivate:211 - No pixel ratio defined.
Check your device configuration!
[W] Silica::ThemePrivate::ThemePrivate:216 - Defaulting to pixel ratio
1.0

I'm assuming that things like pixel ratio will disappear with Sailfish
2.0 for the tablet but in the meantime, is there a way to add some code
so that these warnings are not generated?

I had in mind something along the lines of the qml that Coderus
provided a few months ago.

Enable Developer mode on the phone and nake a note of the IP address if
you want to use wifi.

Go to Qt Creator and under Devices, Add one. I called mine 'Jolla

Enter the device IP and with a user of nemo, try connecting using the
Developer Password you set earlier when you enabled Developer Mode on

[SailfishDevel] What's the correct way to do this?

2015-06-05 Thread Chris Walker
Perhaps somebody can either help me with this one or point me to some
docs that tell me the correct way to do it.

I want to pass several bits of information to another qml page. I've
looked at the various pages and they only tell me how to pass variables
not how to set them up in the first place which is where I'm struggling.

My qml (at the end of a label) looks like this :-
onClicked: console.log("Clicked " + mark + " " + model + " " + register)
   // + { passcarDetails(model);

The console shows that the three pieces of information are being
selected and part of my function looks like this :-
function passcarDetails(carDetails)
{
console.log("about to push to CarRecordPage, for car - id: " +
 carDetails.id + ", register: " +
 carDetails.register)

It's failing at that point as the console says :-
passcarDetails:40 - about to push to CarRecordPage, for car - id:
undefined, register: undefined

So where am I going wrong, and more importantly, what can I do about it?

Any help appreciated.

[SailfishDevel] Passing parameters back?

2015-05-11 Thread Chris Walker
Hopefully somebody can help me with this problem.

In my app, I'm using this approach to set up and use various models :-
https://wiki.qt.io/How_to_Use_a_QSqlQueryModel_in_QML

I have a list of breweries in the first page and when one is selected,
I pass a parameter to the second page like this :-
onClicked:
pageStack.push(Qt.resolvedUrl("BreweryDetailsPage.qml"), { model:
locid });

But I want my sql statement to only pick out the details for 'locid'
and therefore I need to pass that back to the main cpp file which is
set like this :-
view->rootContext()->setContextProperty("breweryInfomodel",
breweryInfomodel);

Note that I have yet to add the code to pass in the locid argument!

Is such a thing possible (my main reason for doing it this way is that I
would like to keep all the relevant code in the same place) or is the
only way to filter the full list of 'locid's in the
BreweryDetailsPage.qml ?

Can I make a request? How about one of you clever people writing a full
tutorial online to which people like me that don't fully grasp things
like models and signals can ask questions?

For example, I want to write a beer app (I have one which works but
isn't comprehensive enough) which takes a supplied database (it comes
from a UK organisation called CAMRA) and have my own database record
things like 'Yes, I've drunk that beer' and in a separate app (the
CAMRA app which runs on Android but is hideous, records all those things
within one app) record the pub in which I drank that beer.

The problems for me are 1) I need to attach models to lots of the
tables in the CAMRA database file and I struggle with models, and 2) I
cannot make the app connect to two databases. In doing item 1, I would
also want the app to update a previous page, much as Florian does.

Of course if that same clever person were to offer to write the whole
thing for me I wouldn't say no :-)

Having just installed them, surely they should be running by default,

I've finally tried adding a Dialog component but it's not working i.e.
it's not opening a new page but the worst bit is that Creator is not
telling me what's wrong i.e. it isn't reporting any errors.

Here are (what I think) the relevant parts of the code :-

Page {
id: brewerylistpage
...
PullDownMenu {
MenuItem {
text: qsTr("About");
onClicked: {
pageStack.push(Qt.resolvedUrl("About.qml"))
}
}
MenuItem {
text: "Add Brewery"
onClicked:

Qt.createComponent("AddBreweryPage.qml").createObject(brewerylistpage,
{});

The AddBreweryPage has already been defined and works but leads to page
navigation problems as discussed above.

In an effort to resolve my problem, I've been looking at this page -
http://qt-project.org/forums/viewthread/26455 but it hasn't helped me
fix it.

So where have I gone wrong?

For reference, I haven't uploaded any of this modified code to git.

I used this yesterday so yes, it does work. But, it didn't work this
time around having previously worked.

To make it work this time, I first attacked my router so that the Jolla
device is always given the same WLAN IP address. I then deleted the
previous device in Qt Creator. I created a new one using the fixed IP
address as defined in the router tables. Note that when creating a new
device, Creator creates a new folder. I'm using linux rather than Mac
OS but I'm guessing the principles are the same. In any event, Creator
tells you where the new folder will be created.

For reference, mine
is /home/chris/SailfishOS/vmshare/ssh/private_keys/SailfishOS_Phone_Wifi/
where the device is called Sailfish_Phone_Wifi.

At that point, you can test the connection. If it fails then, you need
to check the SSH connection on the phone. That's System -> Developer
Mode. Is the IP address correct? Are both Developer mode and Remote
connections options enabled? Set the password there - you can use the
previously used password - and try again.

Ah. I used to do something similar in my N900 version of the app except
that I used to specify the version in the .pro file. I've never tried
to incorporate it into the Sailfish version. I'll give your version
another go now.

[SailfishDevel] Versions

Is there any way to have my 'About' page pick up the Version and
Release information from the yaml file?

At the moment, I'm hard coding the versioninfo in the About page but
I'd like it to be updated automagically in the future.

I looked around but couldn't see this information anywhere so I'm
guessing that this question hasn't been asked/answered before but if it
has, please feel free to point me in the right direction.

What you describe is exactly what I would like to achieve with the next
version of the program but one which uses 2 databases, one provided
by an organisation called CAMRA - www.camra.org.uk and my own to record
any visits to pubs and the beers I drink there.

But that's some way away as I my programming ability needs to improve
considerably before I can do such things! When you get to my age, these
things don't come easily. Certainly they don't for me.

Perhaps I should leave things as they are on this program and
concentrate on the new one!

[SailfishDevel] Pagestack problems

2014-07-10 Thread Chris Walker
I'm struggling with pagestack and need some help.

My initial page loads a database and I have an option to pull down to
add a new item. At the bottom of the 'AddItem' page, I have a check and
if all additions are correct, it steps on to the initial page again.
But it isn't! I have two dots at the top of the top of the screen
indicating that it's a copy of the first page.

If I look here -
https://sailfishos.org/sailfish-silica/qml-sailfishsilica-pagestack.html
I'm still confused! My call to reload the first page is
pageStack.replace(Qt.resolvedUrl("InitialPage.qml")) so what should it
be so that my InitialPage is at the stage it would be when the program
starts? I'm asking that because I want the database reloaded although
I do have this call in that page -

onStatusChanged: {
if (status === PageStatus.Activating) {
fillblistModel();

Any help appreciated.

[SailfishDevel] Why this error now?

2014-07-08 Thread Chris Walker
I'm trying to deploy my app to my phone and on the emulator it works -
in debug mode. But as soon as I switch to release mode, it keels over.

Here's the cpp code where it fails :-

#ifdef QT_QML_DEBUG
#include
#endif

#include
#include

#include
#include "DatabaseManager.h"

Q_DECL_EXPORT int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
QScopedPointer app(SailfishApp::application(argc,
argv)); QScopedPointer view(SailfishApp::createView());

DatabaseManager* db = new DatabaseManager();
db->open();

view->rootContext()->setContextProperty("db", db);

view->setSource(SailfishApp::pathTo("qml/beertent.qml"));

view->show();

return app->exec();
}

The error is invalid use of incomplete type 'struct QQmlContext'

I can easily fix it by adding #include and it all then
works as expected but my query is this. Why does it work in debug mode
with no errors but fails in release mode?

That's fine. I understand the reasons for that. But I like to be able
to have my system run as I like it, so I appreciate the hint about
changing it back to 'as was'.

Now, another question. When did the ability to jump to the top or bottom
of a list happen? I have only just noticed it so I'm assuming it
happened with the latest update. In case you're not clear what I mean,
it's when I scroll a long list, some icons appear enabling me to jump
to the top or bottom of the list. Perhaps it was this question -
[SailfishDevel] Scroll Indicator - from February 14 2014 that prompted
it ;-)

I'm interested in this one too as I have a large database which is used

As I'm not seeing them in any Qt Creator windows, I am not too
concerned about them. When copying over a database file, I've seeing
these messages too :-
Soft assert
at
/home/builder/src/sailfish-qtcreator/src/libs/ssh/sshconnectionmanager.cpp:150

Again, I'm not concerned, more puzzled as to why they're suddenly
appearing.

I bit the bullet and did an uninstall and a full reinstall having
deleted the SailfishAlpha folder in my home folder directory structure.

I'm now seeing lots of these errors in a Konsole window however :-

As far as I can recall, I have never updated any of the components
individually, only through the Creator update mechanism.

As I pointed out above, the error manifests itself when trying to run
an update through Creator.

I can't say I like the idea of a complete reinstall of the SDK to fix a
problem. That looks like a Microsoft way of fixing things!

Are there no flags representing an update state? I could amend one to
force a more major update to resolve the issue instead of the complete
reinstall.

[SailfishDevel] Cover Page Image

2014-06-13 Thread Chris Walker
I've had an app in development for ages and I've always been able to
have an image on the cover page. I've started another app today -
created from the template (New File or Project ...) - and using the
same code for the cover page, Creator is complaining that it can't find
the image.

Here's the first bit of code for the cover page. What am I doing
wrong / need to check to make this work again?

import QtQuick 2.0
import Sailfish.Silica 1.0

CoverBackground {
id: coverpage
anchors.centerIn: parent

Image {
id: logo
source: "images/fuelpad.png"
anchors.centerIn: parent
}

For info, the images folder is inside the qml folder so the folder
structure is Fuelpad > qml > cover alongside images, pages and the
Fuelpad.qml file.

I've searched the mail list since August of last year and nobody seems
to have suffered from this problem.

Okay. That's reinstated the list of beers but I'm back to square one in
that the text is overwriting the image.

So it's one step forward and one step back.

Where should I be looking for documentation on this? I've looked at row
stuff online but it lacks the details for how to specify margins,
positioning and the like. Or, the bits *I've* been looking at do ;-)

another error here - model is not defined and yet they worked in my

So just to be clear on what's going on here, I have this code preceding
the new call to BackgroundItem where I had delegate: BackgroundItem

Does this change anything? As I said, this model stuff baffles me.

SilicaListView {

header: PageHeader {
title: brewerydetailspage.breweryDetails.brewery_name
}

text: "Add a Beer"
// change page name to reflect the choice change above
onClicked:
pageStack.push(Qt.resolvedUrl("AddBeerPage.qml")) }
}
PushUpMenu {
MenuItem {
text: qsTr("Go to top")

[SailfishDevel] Spacing issues

2014-05-20 Thread Chris Walker
Hello,

I have a list of items which display fine from a model. But I want to
display an image before the text is displayed. The image is of a beer
glass and the text items are beer names. But the beer names are overwriting
the images. So where am I going wrong please?

Here are the relevant bits of the code :-

delegate: BackgroundItem {
id: delegate

ListItem {
id: listItem
property bool drunk_y_n: model.drunk_y_n
Image {
width: 40
height: listItem.height - 4

anchors {
left: parent.left
// this margin refers to the image, not the text in the
ListElement
leftMargin: 4
verticalCenter: parent.verticalCenter
}
source: drunk_y_n? "../images/empty_glass.png" :
"../images/full_glass.png" }
}

Label {
anchors.leftMargin: 45
anchors.verticalCenter: parent.verticalCenter
width: parent.width - Theme.paddingLarge
// x: Theme.paddingLarge
wrapMode: Text.Wrap
// elide: Text.ElideRight
font.pixelSize: Theme.fontSizeMedium
// style: Text.Raised
text: model.beerName
color: delegate.highlighted ? Theme.highlightColor :
Theme.primaryColor }
onClicked: console.log("Clicked " + index)
// amend this to call BeerDetailsPage.qml
}
VerticalScrollDecorator {}

I should add that at some point, I will also want to add some text to
display the ABV of the beers. I'm considering displaying the beer name,
then the ABV and then the image. So should I be thinking of specifying
columns for these? If so, how can I specify the widths of the columns
such that the beer names will fade (elide?) under the ABV?

Any help appreciated.

I'd like to express my disappointment for a couple of reasons.

One is that this needed to appear here at all and second that there
*appears* to have been no follow up from anybody at Jolla and in
particular, Thomas Perl.

This should have been jumped on by Jolla in an effort to resolve the
squabling. By now we should have a response from them to say that they
are looking into it and we could safely divert our gaze.

I for one don't expect to see any followups except from either
Filip, Thomas P or somebody else at Jolla to say that this has been
resolved amicably. I certainly don't expect to see any tit-for-tap
arguments continuing. This list is not the place for that.

[SailfishDevel] GPS sensor

2014-04-27 Thread Chris Walker
Hello,

Is it possible to disable the onboard GPS sensor and use a bluetooth
unit instead?

If I look at the location side of the phone, it doesn't offer that
option whereas the Nokia N900 does. Is it possible to do it via some
code perhaps?

In case you're wondering why I might want to do such a thing, the
answer is heat. The phone seems to run much warmer when using Android
code and I have installed Sygic maps. I had those on the N900 and liked
their operation but that phone also ran very hot and would lose comms
from the inbuilt GPS when it did so. Hence I'd like to avoid the same
problem this time around.

Perhaps I need to clarify this. I installed the ntpclient on the host,
and hence why I specified my machine architecture.

It appears to be as it produces several lines of output when I run the
above command. Should I be concerned about this?
Service 'memballoon' was disabled because of missing functionality

I think you'd need to specify which are the correct services and also
all the correct modules, and yes I *did* read the above chapter in the
manual. I can confirm that Guest Additions is installed and working for
a couple of Windows virtual machines but I haven't installed it on the
Mer box. Am I meant to?

If it's a stock install though, why would I need to reconfigure
anything? It all worked before and all I've done is re-install the SDK
and load up the existing .pro file from my project.

Physician heal thyself!

I installed the ntp client and it now picks up network time. I'm
assuming therefore that there is some time 'slip' between the host
machine and VBox.

I now get loads of warnings which again, I haven't seen before such as
these :-
Warning for %files line: "/usr/share/icons/hicolor/86x86/apps"
please use %{_datadir} to replace the leading path /usr/share

But I *ought* to be able to fix that one ;-)

Can somebody help me with this one please?

I've just rebuilt my machine and have reinstalled QtCreator etc. I
never had this problem before so I'm guessing it's something I've done

I've googled it and several people suggest that it's because the build
system is on another machine. I suppose it is here as the build is a
virtual machine, but as I said, it didn't happen until I rebuilt the

I can't move on with my project until I solve it so can anybody suggest

[SailfishDevel] Scroll Indicator

2014-02-14 Thread Chris Walker
Simple question,

Is it possible to make the scroll indicator more permanent and wider so
that the user can grab it in order to scroll a long list?

I have a list of items which is around 700 items in length. In due
course I hope to able to put some filtering in place, rather like the
People app, to avoid the long scroll. But in the meantime, I'd like to
be able to offer the user the possibility to grab the slider and drag
it down the list.

So can it be done, and if so, how?

One question first. Are you intending to do the swap of files at home?
If so, why not fire up some sort of server on the home machine which,
when you fire up the app on the phone, is accessed by the app which
then proceeds to download the latest version of the database. You just
need to set up a procedure to make sure you're not going to overwrite
the 'father' generation of the database with the 'son' version, or even
worse the 'grandfather' version (that assumes that you have three
versions).

Another option is a dropbox client on the phone - I think one is
already available.

How about a line in the SQL file which has a creation date? That way
you easily run a check from the code on both the desktop app and the
phone to make absolutely certain that the version of the db you're
using is the latest all-singing, all-dancing version.

I personally wouldn't be doing all the export/import stuff. That seems
prone to errors/corruption IMHO.

Just my two pennies worth.

Bonjour Lucien,

Thanks for ideas - saves me a few minutes ;-)

My main query was for ideas on how to avoid this sort of problem by
being able to look in any Sailfish docs for ways to do these things the
Sailfish way - a sort of technical version of a 'style/theme' guide I
guess.

If I look at the emulator, it gives some examples so is there a
codebase somewhere describing not only the things called out there but
other examples too?

Talking of style related items and this is a largely a question for
the Sailfish people themselves, is there some sort of definition on how
apps should present covers? If I look at my phone (while not wearing
glasses), I find it hard to discriminate between emails and text
messages. In some of the early pictures of the phone, the apps on the
Home screen were shown with pictures. The only Sailfish app on that
screen that has a cover icon is the People app. But having installed
SMPC, that is a superb example IMHO of how it should be done.

[SailfishDevel] Supercession

In trying to update a Qt4 app (written for an N900) to Qt5 I wanted to
find out what I should do in order to update something like this

I get an error 'QueryDialog is not a type' and found out that QDialog
does exist in Qt5 but it inherits Widgets and as they're not used in
Sailfish, I wondered how I might go about finding out what *is* used.

Often we have queries here when somebody has tried something and it
hasn't worked, and the learned sailors respond with something along the
lines of 'you need to do this', where 'this' is something new and
peculiar to Sailfish.

Is there a definitive list (albeit subject to change) for supercessions

I think you mean /run/user/.. as /run/usr doesn't exist and I don't
think you'd want to be writing to /usr even if it did ;-)

Can't you (as root) unmount the sdcard from the above location, as user
create a folder /home/nemo/sdcard and then mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 to
there?

How about an entry in fstab to fix that mount permanently?

Run blkid to give you the UUID of the sdcard so that even if it's
swapped out, it will still remount in the same place.

This is what I get when I run that command (I have a 16GB SD card in my
phone which came straight from my N900)
/dev/mmcblk1p1: UUID="B7C1-AD43" TYPE="vfat"

I can't help you with the USB stuff.

A definite +1 for that. I looked at an iPhone recently and to be able
to zoom in and rock a finger to move between letters was something I
thought would be good here but this is just as good. Well done Jolla.

I couldn't see how to reply. But, looking at it again this morning, and
taking onboard something said to me yesterday, I now realise that I was
wrong to criticise that aspect of the phone. In fact, if I think back to
other times, it can be quite advantageous to have the design as it is
now.

Perhaps I should explain those things.

First, the explanation given to me last night. The prospective
purchaser described to me the notion of 'breadcrumbs' i.e. the dots at
the top of the screen indicating more options either side. So looking
at those I could see that there was an option to the right. At first
when I was presented with the contacts page for my wife, I thought the
phone had gone wrong as I expected to be offered a 'reply' button rather
than a straight 'Send SMS' option but that leads me on to part two. In
the past, when somebody has sent me a text I have then wanted to call
them rather than reply by SMS. So the current design has saved me from
having to go to the Contacts/People app to find their details.

> From what I see on the device, it should be quite obvious how to do

> not-so-obvious but guessable (long press) from the call app.

It's not obvious when you're already annoyed as you tend to overlook
the obvious and I'm afraid I far too readily get annoyed with the phone
at the moment because it isn't like my previous phone. You'll have to
put that down to my intolerance, lack of patience or whatever else you
want to call it. I am learning to use it and as I said above, it can
save me time.

But I can't go without complaining about something ;-)

The distinction between the two types of message - sent and received -
is IMHO too great. I'd like that to be tweaked somehow to make the sent
texts slightly nearer the colour of the received texts.

Also, I'd like the sort to be reversed. Following the logic of the
'running apps' page, the latest app to be used appears at the top left
and if I put something into a box, it appears at the top. So I'd like
the sort to be organised so that the latest text is at the top rather
than at the bottom? Rather than impose my wishes on everybody else as
plainly my views are quite at odds to most people, this ought to be a
config option.

Oh, and in future, perhaps I should consider my replies more carefully
in future before shouting about the design ;-)

I am, or rather the phone is. I'm the Mk 1 human, perhaps even the
0.7 beta ;-)

> Please let me know if you still can't send emails.

I *still* can't send emails. I'm a member of a local linux user group
and as one of the members is interested in buying a jolla (I should be
on commission!), I took mine along. I have to say that he was
impressed. He played around with it for some time but when he left, I
then moved on to one of the experienced guys who tried to set up the
email account. He had my account working on his laptop with the same
settings that wouldn't work on my phone.

Valerio, if you want to email me privately, I'll give you my email
login details and you can play to your hearts content with this until
you can make it work as I can't.

On the way home from the meeting, I wanted to send a text to my wife.
If I thought email was difficult, that was a walk in the park compared
to trying to send an SMS. Seriously people, have you tried this thing
in the real world? Where's the Reply button? Jeez. You sure are making
life tough.

Which log? I tried amending the .conf file as mentioned earlier by
Reto Zingg (it was something put forward in the together site) but it
all scrolled by too quickly and I couldn't find a log file.

Lucky you. I've tried various permutations but I am prepared to give it
another go.

One question I would ask and that is, do you have developer mode
switched on? If I hook my phone up to my PC with dev mode on, if I
should inadvertently unplug the USB lead from the PC, the phone rolls
over. It doesn't do it if I simply click on PC Connection or Charging
when connecting in the first place. It's repeatable.

I followed these instructions - http://www.daily.co.uk/support?id=1021
which is what I had already followed when trying to setup email on the
native accounts program (daily.co.uk is my hosting company).

What I find a little frustrating is that when trying to setup IMAP for
cdw_pcmail@the.. the phone would send but not receive - hence no inbox
which is where this thread started - but now when I have created
jolla@the... it can receive but not send. But I'm using all the same
settings with the same server names and so on (for those UK readers, I
am reminded of the Morecambe and Wise sketch with Andre Previn!).

Even more frustrating is that K9 uses the same settings and just works.

So doesn't that imply that something on the phone is broken? But what?

Final comment on this. I created another new email account called
jolla@the.. and went through the usual rigmarole of setting it up via
the GUI. It failed to send. I then asked for help from the email
hosting company who told me that no attempt had been made to log into
the SMTP server. They suggested various tweaks to the settings, all to
no avail although I did receive different errors on the phone.

Having grown tired of this, I installed K9 mailer under Android.
Including the time taken to download and install it, it was up and
running within 5 minutes.

I'll be visiting a local linux user group this evening as somebody
wants to see a jolla 'in the flesh' before he parts with his money and
buys one. I might canvass their opinions on what's going wrong with the
native email app but to my mind, something on the phone is severely
broken.

As I'm not of the Microsoft Windows persuasion who believe that
re-installing everything will cure all ills, I'm hopeful that one of
their more knowledgeable people will be able to resolve the problem and
I'll be a happy chappy - well, a slightly less grumpy one ;-)
