2015-04-09 Thread schifano
Indeed, it seems a good starting point. The main problem to this project
is to have a compatible Android kernel running on Maemo. But it seems
there is a big memory consumption, which will not be a problem with the
Neo900. And it seems that with a more modern kernel it will be easier,
kernel which will be brought by Maemo 5 on Neo900. But after having a
running Android chroot, there will be a big code writing for doing the
glue between the chroot and Maemo
It seems a be a better idea to investigate about ARC Chromium extension
but it requires a more modern OS than Maemo 5.

In this case it's not a smartphone with a physical keyboard but something
like any other Android smartphones with an external keyboard.
If I liked TOHKBD, I could also have bought this :

Or you could buy, you know, a Jolla phone *today* and

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2028347278/tohkbd-the-other-half-keyboard-for-your-jolla

because there's no point in Jolla being as open as possible and then users not
supporting the community that develops awesome things like that ^^^

When I think of a phone with a hardware keyboard, it's something that's
attached to my phone, not something that I carry almost separately and
may lose or forget. Some people don't consider it a reasonable
compromise, and would rather have a hole in hwkbd, or have it shorter
than a phone itself. To each their own.

The main issue of this keyboard is that it masks the camera. So I can't
take quickly a picture, I have to remove in first the keyboard. With
this
TOHKBD, we can't have an other one : it's either a keyboard or something
else. So this smartphone is just like all the others with a physical
keyboard, but less interesting because of the camera issue. And finally,
I'm not convinced by the magnets. I rather prefer a true slider
keyboard.

The main interest of this design could have been the possibility to
slide
out only the directional pad with the smartphone in portrait mode, for
allowing users to control there smartphone with it (in case they have
gloves for example).

So for the moment, for me, the Jolla phone with TOHKBD is not
interesting.

Re: [SailfishDevel] Neo900 support

2015-04-09 Thread schifano
I'm aware of this product, but I don't like how it is done.
The main issue of this keyboard is that it masks the camera. So I can't
take quickly a picture, I have to remove in first the keyboard. With this
TOHKBD, we can't have an other one : it's either a keyboard or something
else. So this smartphone is just like all the others with a physical
keyboard, but less interesting because of the camera issue. And finally,
I'm not convinced by the magnets. I rather prefer a true slider keyboard.

The main interest of this design could have been the possibility to slide
out only the directional pad with the smartphone in portrait mode, for
allowing users to control there smartphone with it (in case they have
gloves for example).

So for the moment, for me, the Jolla phone with TOHKBD is not interesting.

Re: [SailfishDevel] Neo900 support

2015-04-09 Thread Marcin Mielniczuk
Schifano: and what about Android apps on N900? There was a project, now dead,
aiming to bring them to N900 via chroot (driven by lexik) but went not far from
the theoretical stage. There are some clues though about the needed kernel
modules and some posts about the partial progress. It's a good point to start.

I'm sure you would find a couple of people to help if you ask explicitly. If
you want some more details, let me know. Maybe you'll be the one who'll bring
us the Android apps?

The TOHKBD promises to be a very good add-on, though I don't know if it
will be available to people who didn't pre-order...

(But right now you can still pre-order here:

Oh, I assumed you install Android app in a chrooted Android environment
which implies an Android kernel.
I confess than I'm a bit disapointed to discover this, because I wanted
to install Sailfish either on the Neo900 or on a good Android phone with
a physical keyboard for having an interresting OS/device with the
possibility to install Android apps when there is not equivalent.

Thank you, now I have a better understanding of how it works.

Re: [SailfishDevel] Neo900 support

2015-04-06 Thread Andrey Kozhevnikov
Sailfish is Jolla UI over Mer with Wayland Lipstick windows manager. It
runs on normal Linux kernel. Android adaptations using libhybris.
If you can run Nemo on your device you can just add/replace Jolla
repositories and "install" sailfish on it.
You will not have possibility to install android apps until someone will
create open android launcher or Jolla start licensing aliendalvik for
non-Jolla devices.

Hi,

Still about a Neo900 support, I have an other question :

As far as I understand, basically Sailfish is Mer (Wayland version) with
the Jolla UI, and with an Android kernel and libhybris. So if I am able
to have Nemo running rightly on a N(eo)900 with Wayland, I will be able
to run Sailfish apps ? And if I am able to do it with an Android kernel
and libhybris, I will be able to have it working with the possibility to
install Android apps ?

Best regards

Re: [SailfishDevel] Neo900 support

2015-04-05 Thread Schifano Alexandre
Oh I see :(. However I saw an unofficial port of Salfish from Jolla to
the N900, and the Neo900 will be fully compatible with N900 software, so
I hoped Jolla could do an other port for the Neo900.
And since the UI is closed source, how can I do the port by myself ? And
will it run smoothly on a mono-core smartphone ?

I think it's fine, the N900 resistive screen seems to be enougth
accurate for gestures. It is mor accurate than other smartphones with
resistive screens.

You should make sailfishos port to your Neo900 yourself or just wait
until someone will do it for themselves. Jolla not making own
adaptations to any devices, only giving assistance.

Though on the one hand I would also love to give my n900 another lease on
life it seems to me that sailfish and/or meego would not work very well on
the n900 or the neo900 since the resistive touch screen used would make all
the gestures as pretty major pain in the backside to use (even though I
tend to agree with the argument that resistive touch has the potential to

a real product that uses superior resistive touch technology - stantum
