[ovirt-devel] GSoC Mentors Needed
All: We have been given five slots for projects in Google Summer of Code this year and thus far only one has a mentor. If anyone is interested in mentoring one of these projects, please contact me immediately. The deadline is 1200 EDT today. -- Configuring Backup storage for Ovirt This proposal is about configuring any Storage Domain as a new Backup Storage Domain. This will help to replace the use of Export storage domain which use dedicated storage domain for backup and disaster recovery. -- Implement oVirt integration tests using Lago Complete the ovirt-system-tests with the necessary tests -- oVirt log analyzer oVirt is a distributed system and all parts of the system have their own logs. In order to analyze/troubleshoot an issue, it is useful to correlate an action triggered on one subsystem and how it travelled over the other parts. This would be a greenfield project written in Python. Timeline of the work: Develop a method for recognizing the contents of log files of different formats - May, 30 - June, 15 Implement matching events in different log files with each other - June, 15 - July, 1 Develop and implement methods for automatic analysis of the logs and the events occurring in them, such as identifying errors, unusual events, VM properties, etc. - July, 1 - August, 1 Add an interactive user interface to the developed algorithms, testing and improving - August, 1 - August, 30 The initial version of steps 1-3 implementation was proposed under mentor (Milan Zamazal) control, the results are in repository https://github.com/aantsiferova/ovirt-log-analyzer -- BRIAN PROFFITT PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ANALYST Red Hat Inc. <https://www.redhat.com/> bprof...@redhat.comT: 574.383.9BKP <http://redhatemailsignature-marketing.itos.redhat.com/>M: 574.780.5695 <http://redhatemailsignature-marketing.itos.redhat.com/> <https://red.ht/sig> T: @redhatopen <https://twitter.com/redhatopen> F: Red Hat Community <https://www.facebook.com/redhatopen> ___ Devel mailing list Devel@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/devel
[ovirt-devel] Dates for This Phase of GSoC
I've had some questions about the Google Summer of Code, and I wanted to share with you the dates and milestones for the student/mentor onboarding phase of the event. All dates can be found on the GSoC site[1]. Right now we are in the student application phase, which goes until April 3. By that time, students should have their draft proposals in. Then we review them and turn them in to Google by April 16. On April 17, we ask for student slots, and then on April 19, slots are allocated to us. Finally, on April 24, we tell Google which students are going to take the slots, and then on May 3, Google announces all projects/students/mentors. Hopefully this helps. Please watch your inbox for notifications from Google to ensure what you are getting does not need an action item. What I get as one of the oVirt admins for GSoC is different that what you get as (potential) mentors. One of the big events for the year is the Red Hat Summit, which has a dedicated open source community track for upstream projects. At the very least this is an opportunity to give a "state of the union" talk for the various communities, including oVirt. There are a significant number of downstream-related talks for Summit, but if you would like to submit an oVirt-related talk for the open source community track[1] before the CFP for Summit closes on Dec. 16, please do so! [ovirt-devel] [Call for Vote] moVirt as a Full oVirt Project
All: The moVirt Project was initially accepted as an oVirt incubator project in February 2015. It has been a successful subproject for quite some time and it is well due for being accepted as a full oVirt project. I believe it is appropriate to post a Call for Vote on the Devel and Board lists. http://www.ovirt.org/develop/projects/project-movirt/ A “healthy” project, as determined by the oVirt Board, can be found at http://www.ovirt.org/develop/projects/adding-a-new-project/ Voting will be open until 1200 UTC Nov. 30, 2016. A net total of +7 votes should be received to formalize this project as an full oVirt project. Please use the following vote process: +1 Yes, agree, or the action should be performed. On some issues, this vote must only be given after the voter has tested the action on their own system(s). ±0 Abstain, no opinion, or I am happy to let the other group members decide this issue. An abstention may have detrimental affects if too many people abstain. -1 No, I veto this action. All vetos must include an explanation of why the veto is appropriate. [ovirt-devel] [Call for Vote] Proposal for new Incubator Project
All: This project was initially proposed for review on Oct. 9. It has been reviewed for major issues and having heard no objections, it's now time to formally vote on accepting this as an official oVirt incubator subproject. The last time we voted on one of these was during an IRC weekly meeting, so I believe it is appropriate to post a Call for Vote on the Devel and Board lists. Voting will be open until 1200 UTC Nov. 28, 2016. A net total of +5 votes should be received to formalize this project as an incubator subproject. A veto with no explanation is void. Thank you! Brian Proffitt --- Project Proposal - Vagrant Provider A vagrant provider for oVirt v4 Abstract This will be a provider plugin for the Vagrant suite that allows command-line ease of virtual machine provisioning and lifecycle management. Proposal This Vagrant provider plugin will interface with the oVirt REST API (version 4 and higher) using the oVirt provided ruby SDK 'ovirt-engine-sdk-ruby'. This allows users to abstract the user interface and experience into a set of command line abilities to create, provision, destroy and manage the complete lifecycle of virtual machines. It also allows the use of external configuration management and configuration files themselves to be committed into code. Background I have previously forked and maintained the 'vagrant-ovirt' gem as 'vagrant-ovirt3' due to Gems requiring unique names. The original author has officially abandoned the project. For the last few years all code to maintain this project has been maintained by myself and a few ad-hoc github contributors. This provider interfaced directly with oVirt v3 using fog and rbovirt. The new project would be a fresh start using the oVirt provided ruby SDK to work directly with version 4. Rationale The trend in configuration management, operations, and devops has been to maintain as much of the development process as possible in terms of the virtual machines and hosts that they run on. With software like Terraform the tasks of creating the underlying infrastructure such as network rules, etc have had great success moving into 'Infrastructure as code'. The same company behind Terraform got their reputation from Vagrant which aims to utilize the same process for virtual machines themselves. The core software allows for standard commands such as 'up', 'provision', 'destroy' to be used across a provider framework. A provider for oVirt makes the process for managing VMs easier and able to be controlled through code and source control. Initial Goals The initial goal is to get the base steps of 'up', 'down' (halt), and 'destroy' to succeed using the oVirt provided ruby SDK for v4. Stretch/followup goals would be to ensure testability and alternate commands such as 'provision' and allow configuration management suites like puppet to work via 'userdata' (cloud-init). Current Status The version 3 of this software has been heavily utilized. The original fork known as 'vagrant-ovirt' has been abandoned with no plans to communicate or move forward. My upstream fork has had great success with nearly 4x the downloads from rubygems.org . Until my github fork has more 'stars' I cannot take over it completely so the gem was renamed 'vagrant-ovirt3'. This is also true for rubygems.org since gems are not namespaced, therefore could not be published without a unique name. The v4 provider is still pending my initial POC commit but there are no current barriers except initial oVirt hosting. The hosting of oVirt v3 for testing is a laptop on a UPS at my home, and v4 is also a different pc attached to a UPS. External Dependencies RHEVM/oVirt REST API - This provider must interact with the API itself to manage virtual machines. Frank Zdarsky and I would like to come to the TLV team offices during the last week in June (specifically June 28-July 1) to meet with all interested developers who would like to be involved with NFV and SDN features in oVirt. Specifically, Frank would like to meet with the people who know about the integration of Neutron into oVirt, as well as about high level features like HA setup, automation, workload scheduling. [ovirt-devel] Want to Be Mentor?
oVirt is pleased to announce it will be participating in the May-August 2015 round of Outreachy, organized by the GNOME Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy, and Red Hat. Outreachy helps women (cis and trans) and genderqueer get involved in free and open source software. The program provides a supportive community for beginning to contribute any time throughout the year and offers focused internship opportunities twice a year with a number of free software organizations. If anyone has a project they'd like to add to the list of ideas at[1], there is still time. Applications will open tomorrow. Right now we are confirmed for at least one intern, but there should be funding for at least one more. Thanks! [ovirt-devel] [GSoC] Announcing the 2015 Google Summer of Code!
Hey, oVirt Community! Though there was some question regarding oVirt's eligibility in the 2015 Google Summer of Code, it turns out that we *are* eligible to apply for the program again. Applications for potential mentoring organizations are now open and are due at 1100 PST (1900 UTC) on Feb. 20, 2015. http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2015 As with last year, we would need to come up with projects for students to work on. The projects can be different skill levels, and they can be modular. They should also be doable within eight weeks in a summer with mentor help. If you are interested in mentoring such a project, visit http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2015/02/mentoring-organization-applications-now.html for more information, then come to http://www.ovirt.org/Summer_of_Code so we can coordinate ideas prior to submitting to Google. [ovirt-devel] [Event] 2015 oVirt Asia Workshop
As oVirt strives to become the best open source and comprehensive data center virtualization management suite, and its community rapidly evolves and grows, one of the ways its vibrant community connects is through our Global Workshops. The events are conducted solely to introduce new users and veteran oVirt admins to new features and new techniques found in oVirt, as well as provide a forum for our users to connect directly with the development team behind oVirt. With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2014 oVirt Workshop! The next 2015 oVirt workshop will be co-located with the FOSSAsia in Singapore on March 14, 2015. This workshop is designed to encourage collaboration in our community, lay the foundation for best practices in oVirt use, convey end-user stories, and help answer questions about the project from both a developer and user's perspective. [ovirt-devel] [New Documentation] oVirt User Guide (Please Review!)
I would like to announce the posting of a new page on the oVirt site: the oVirt User Guide[1]. I know what you're thinking: didn't we just release the oVirt Administration Guide? Why, indeed we did[2]! But this was a shorter document, and so did not take as long to convert. This guide, adapted to MediaWiki form with the help of Red Hat's Content Services team, should be up to date as of oVirt 3.4. But, it is a living document and, like the Administration Guide, it needs further review! I ask everyone to take start poking at this documentation once oVirt 3.5 is released and people get familiar with the new release, so as to identify procedures that have changed, and new features that must be added. Please use Bugzilla to assign bugs in these document to me, or, if you have wiki privileges, edit as needed. Up next: a revised Quick Start Guide to get people launched into oVirt as fast as possible. [ovirt-devel] [Documentation] Assistance Needed with User-Facing Documentation
All: The Red Hat ECS team has made a great effort to convert some of the more important downstream documentation to a MediaWiki format that we can post on oVirt.org as an official set of user- and admin-facing documentation. This is being done as a bootstrapping effort to get our upstream documentation up to date and take a big step towards making the upstream documentation the canonical source for documentation in the near future. Before that can happen, we need to get this RHEV-oriented information ported over to oVirt nomenclature and screenshots taken for oVirt and added to the documents as well. I have placed the three guides * Administration Guide[1] * User's Guide[2] * Installation Guide[3] on the oVirt site as unlinked pages. General wording has been changed from RHEV to oVirt, but not always. Each of these documents must be reviewed and completely adapted to oVirt 3.4 before they can be posted as official documentation. Specifically: * Review all text to ensure proper steps and descriptions for oVirt features and procedures * Review all text to remove downstream-specific text * Review all code for changes in package names on on-screen displays * Replace all downstream RHEV screenshots with upstream oVirt 3.4 screenshots (Max width: 1024px) I will be stepping through these documents to edit them in more detail under these guidelines, but help is most assuredly needed, in order to get this done in a timely manner. oVirt.org wiki users can visit these pages, review them, and add their changes. MediaWiki has limited version control, so it would be best to edit sections instead of entire documents, to minimize stepping on others' changes. Editing by section will also help us track the sections that have been edited, using the pages' histories. Thank you in advance for all of your help on this project... when finished, this will represent a significant improvement to oVirt's documentation, and make oVirt that much easier to use. The allinone RPMs were not analyzed at this time, since installing this RPM is a choice made during the installation process itself. Tracking the Engine Reports and dwh RPMs was done to determine the popularity of these two tools and to ensure their numbers were comparable. To count downloads, data was gathered each month that listed the total downloads of every file, a number derived from the total hits each file had, minus any 206 hits, which indicated incomplete downloads. Key files for Engine, Engine Reports, and Engine dwh were identified and the data filtered to include counts for each one of the files, in whatever version released. Tracking of Live and Node RPMs was already set up within the awstats reporting, and was taken directly from awstats in each month. If there is any part of this methodology that is in error, feedback is very much appreciated. You should know that since we now have a mirrorlist (which in terms of hit count is already in the top 3) the number could be much lower than the actual RPM downloads. I'd be interested how much traffic is served by mirrors. ___ Devel mailing list Devel@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

[ovirt-devel] [Features] Special Request for Feature Page Cleanup Projecy
All: It has been requested that we add date/timestamps to the Features pages in order to highlight the age of each page and assist users in determining how fresh information is. After investigating various options to do this within the database or using automated code, it seems that the old-fashioned manual way is still the best option. This is because an automated solution would only insert the needed strings, but not the actual data that pertains to that feature. To divide this work among the community, I have made an inventory of all of the features pages in the oVirt.org site as of 3/30/14, located at http://bit.ly/1iA1HQ3. If everyone can take a look at this sheet (check the tabs on the bottom, too) and find the pages they created or for which they are responsible, the following steps should be taken for pages that are marked Yes in Needs Datestamp: 1. Add the following line to the top of each page, under the first heading: {{Feature|name=[Name of Feature]}|modules=[Node(s) of feature]|version=[oVirt version number]|status=Released}} 2. On the Feature page spreadsheet on Google Docs, change the Yes in Needs Datestamp to No. This new Feature template string will add the time and date information to the page automatically. If, along the way, you find features that have been deprecated, or feature pages that are duplicates, these pages should be cleaned up as well. Ideally, this should not take too much time for each individual, and the effort will be a big step towards documentation consistency on the oVirt site. If you have any questions/concerns, send them my way.
