We don't even need to cause breakage. Just install both names and update the 
docs to the new names.

On a source build, make the public bindir == private bindir. For system-wide 
builds, the distributor chooses to separate.

I think just suffix all the binaries (all of them) everywhere, and update
the docs everywhere. See how simple it would be. Yes it will cause some
breakage, but definitely worth it in my opinion.

The point is that it applies to more than one platform, including mac. 
Therefore, it should be more visible than "linux-building".

Also, Qt when built from sources should match the majority of build styles 
too.  Or put another way: what do we lose by having the common name that 
everyone shares in the default?

Sorry, no. If Homebrew renames binaries, that’s a Homebrew documentation 
installation documentation issue. How Qt is built from source on macOS has no 
relation to that.
