[DDN] Digital Divide Bridging as Economic Stimulus

2009-01-15 Thread Steven Clift
I thought I'd try to stir up some thinking related to the pending economic
stimulus package by proposing 30,000 digital Community Infrastructure
Builders:

Re: [DDN] why not googlegroups - Re: The future of DDN

2009-01-15 Thread Steven Clift
Anyone know how big the current membership is and whether the current system
can export out member directory data?

No matter where it moves to (if it needs to), asking people to move will
only bring over 25 percent of the folks.

Whether it is GroupServer installed at http://groups.dowire.org or Yahoo or
Google Groups, the key is ensure that participants may post via e-mail -
both new topics and replies. Anything short of that might as well be
launched as a new competitive thing for our attention on Ning or some other
social networking platform.

Steven Clift

Re: [DDN] in search of volunteer moderators (was The future of DDN)

2009-01-15 Thread Cassidy Puckett
Hi all,

I am a PhD student at Northwestern University in the Sociology department,
doing research on digital inequality. I have my master's in Education
(Learning, Design, and Technology, specifically) from Stanford University
and have done research in technology and education for the past 5 years and
worked in public schools the last 8 years. I have some familiarity with
TakingITGlobal (presentations at NECC, etc.) and would be happy to moderate
(and also facilitate the relationship with TIG, which seems to be a
necessary related task).

I'm not sure exactly who is organizing this, but please let me know if you
need any more information.

Best,
Cassidy

Hi Tom,

The problem is that there isn't an official moderator at the moment.
Technically I'm not supposed to be moderating the list anymore because I
work for NPR News and I can't be involved directly in policy
discussions,
but the moderating from TakingITGlobal sometimes runs behind. I would
suggest that DDN members try to find three or four people who could
share
the moderating duties, and I'm sure the TIG folks would be happy to get
them
set up. Either way, I really shouldn't be doing it as long as I work for
NPR.

Hi Andy - these are great insights... And there are lessons to be
learned in this discussion that go beyond DDN. Thanks!

[DDN] Hurrah to the three people volunteering to moderate

2009-01-15 Thread Jayne Cravens
Fouad Bajwa, Andy Swarbrik and Molly Uzoh are all volunteering to
moderate the DDN. Nothing says "yes, I want this group to continue" like
people willing to step up to the plate and take on responsibilities to
make it happen. Not sure who makes the decision, but I just wanted to
say -- hurrah.

I'd like to suggest no switching of the DDN platform for now, that we
focus just on getting this group regularly moderated and, if that works
out for a while, *then* a discussion happen about possibly moving the
platform.

Is there a full written description of the role of the DDN moderator, so
that these three, and any others, could know exactly what it is they are
volunteering to do? I would be happy to share some sample descriptions
if that would help.
