Re: [DDN] Nationwide implementation of ICT in mass Education....

2009-07-15 Thread Sameera Wijerathna
Dear Alan/Others

Here in Sri Lanka (South Asia) we have a project called Digital Bridge, in
which we connect thousand rural schools with the satellite technology. We are
working with the Ministry of Education (MoE) of Sri Lanka and there is a
dedicated educational channel which telecast programmes on local school
syllabus.

We have developed contents in local languages (Sinhalese and Tamil) and schools
can select the language according to their preference. The high quality,
educational contents developed by the Ministry of Education, are telecasted by
Dialog TV (a company of Dialog Telekom) to the rural schools.

Sri Lanka, being a developing country has some infrastructure issues in the
rural schools. In some schools we do not have qualified teachers to teach
subjects such as Mathematics, Science, English, etc. Also those schools are
lacking with library facilities, science lab facilities, computer lab, etc. So
in our Digital Bridge project we have selected those rural schools and trying
to deliver quality education using the technology as an attempt the bridge the
rural digital divide.

Subject: [DDN] Nationwide implementation of ICT in mass Education

Hello all DDN members,

We wish to find out if there is any member in DDN that is involved in using ICT
in mass Education that covers entire country (not those which cover a few
schools or only those helping only a small section of the country) to close the
digital divides of rural and urban schools. This is what digital divides
Network should be looking for.

If so, we would love to learn more what system or technology you are using.

Is there any technology available able to solve any country/s digital divides
problems faced by practically most developing countries?

In developed countries... is there any country able to provide uniform system
for an entire country?

If so, hope you can share with us all. If not , why is that so? What are the
main challenges preventing such?

Regards

Alan

Hi Tom,

The problem is that there isn't an official moderator at the moment.
Technically I'm not supposed to be moderating the list anymore because I
work for NPR News and I can't be involved directly in policy
discussions,
but the moderating from TakingITGlobal sometimes runs behind. I would
suggest that DDN members try to find three or four people who could
share
the moderating duties, and I'm sure the TIG folks would be happy to get
them
set up. Either way, I really shouldn't be doing it as long as I work for
NPR.

Re: [DDN] e-waste in Ghana

2008-08-15 Thread Sameera Wijerathna
Hi Bajwa

We are at Dialog Telekom, Sri Lanka too have an initiative to handle
M-Waste (Mobile Waste). Please refer the following article for more
info.

Dialog Telekom launches M-Waste take back programme.

Colombo, Sri Lanka. 03rd December 2007.

Leading the way in Corporate Environment Consciousness Dialog Telekom
today launched Sri Lanka's first mobile phone battery and handset take
back initiative aimed at reducing electronic (mobile) waste (M-waste).

In an unique linkage with the company's ongoing Joy-Toy programme,
Dialog Telekom has pledged to match M-Waste items returned by consumers
with monetary contributions towards the gifting of Toys for Needy
Children over the Christmas Season.

Dialog Telekom has taken the lead in recognizing that going forward
M-waste could take the form of a significant environmental concern if
forward thinking steps were not taken at an early stage to develop
social and institutional consciousness on the subject. With over 7
Million Mobile users as of date and rapid growth expected in the sector
in coming years, discarded mobile phones, batteries and accessories
could contribute to a growing stream of waste in Sri Lanka, if steps
towards safe disposal practices were not established in a timely manner.
M-Waste if not disposed of safely would have a harmful impact on the
environment, adding to pollution and other ill effects of hazardous
waste.

Please keep us updated about your Classmate initiative.

The competition between OLPC and Classmate will lead to more and more
new innovations/efficiencies in the low cost computing. That will be
good for the computer industry as well as the developing countries who
otherwise can not afford high cost computers.

Hello Nasira Gardezi ,

I can offer your rural teachers the tool to create their own simple
contents as

well as ready made contents. Talking about rural areas and you are
working for

Intel can I assume you may be using th ULPC like Classmate?

If you do, that it would even more useful because of the limited storage
space

left of Classmate if it is using only SD drive plus would last longer

because of less read/write operations compared to CD rom sized modules

(Classmate PC doesn't have any CD ROM drive I think).

If you are to depend on Internet source to be used for classrooms daily
work,

it would be a very big challenge to be effectiveand before long
these would

be like white elephants.

Do contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we can work out
something to

help in your work for the rural community.

Hi there

I find this conversation very interesting, I live and work in South Africa and

am involved in a website (under construction as we speak) that aims to promote

the use of ICT in non government organizations. As you know Africa has huge

challenges when it comes to the digital divide, although our mobile usage (in

South Africa) and uptake was one of the fastest in the world, resulting in one

of the biggest GSM markets in the world, much of the population is illiterate,

don't have access to technology and are unemployed. So very similar to

India in a lot of ways.

And Ilan on another note, we will be trying to stimulate conversation in much

the same way as you mention for the digital divide site (once we are up and

running) Experts commenting on issues and researchers using the site to post

and learn - so exciting times ahead. More importantly, NGO's using the

site to download curriculum and improve their usage of technology - not only in

South Africa but in Kenya, Senegal, Ghana as well. If anybody would like to know

more in these areas please ask, and conversely please send information you might

think is relevant to our side of the world.
