RE: [DDN] Loband: web acceleration tool for low bandwidth environments
Thanks for this link, Tom. I consult with small public libraries in northern Ontario and just forwarded this link to one librarian who was complaining bitterly about the painfully slow downloading speed on her library's only dial-up access computer. High speed access is available in her community - just no extra money to provide this access at the library. Marjatta Asu Ontario Library Service - North Sudbury, On Canada -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Lord Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2005 6:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [DDN] Loband: web acceleration tool for low bandwidth environments Hi all, This has previously been posted on the discussion boards but they seem to be very slow moving - so apologies if you've already read it. As detailed below, we've recently released a new version of our low-bandwidth web acceleration tool Loband, which we think will be a valuable contribution to efforts to bridge the digital divide. We're very keen to get feedback, especially from people working on ICT for development programs in low-bandwidth environments. Hope it's of interest. regards, Tom. -- Loband is a free service, designed specifically to improve access to online information over slow connections. The newest version of the Loband service is now accessible at http://www.loband.org . It can reduce the time it takes for a web page to load by up to 10 times, making Internet access easier and less expensive in low bandwidth environments. The service has been designed for simplicity - users simply go to http://www.loband.org and type in the address of the desired page. Loband will then present a simplified version of that page. Loband works by removing unnecessary adverts and graphics while retaining the text, links and layout of the site. The original page or individual images can be viewed at any time if desired. The latest version of Loband supports more websites than ever before, including those featuring international character sets. The service has been developed as an open source project by Aidworld (http://www.aidworld.org), an NGO specialising in the field of ICT for Development. Aidworld would very much welcome comments and feedback to further improve this service. You can contact us directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . [DDN] Creating the $100 Laptop
The fifth annual MIT Technology Review Emerging Technology Conference kicked off this morning with a presentation from Nicholas Negroponte of the MIT Media Lab. Negroponte discussed his $100 laptop initiative, in which he is working to produce a low-cost laptop for mass distribution in k-12 schools in the developing world. It is the most important project I've ever done in my life... The reception it's received has been incredible, he said. The idea is simple - it's to look at education. This is an education project, not just a laptop project. If you take any world problem - peace, the environment, poverty - the solution to that problem certainly includes education. And if you have a solution that doesn't include education, than it's not a real solution at all. In emerging nations, the issue is not connectivity, Negroponte continued. It *was* the issue; it's not a solved problem, but there are many people and many systems working on it... It's happening; it doesn't need me, MIT or the Media Lab. But for education, the roadblock is the laptop. Negroponte told the story of building schools in Cambodia. He gave students laptops to bring home, but they came back the next day, the laptops unused. Their parents would not let them use them because they were worried they'd break it. The students went back home with a note saying they didn't have to worry about the cost of the laptops; the parents loved them because they were the brightest lights they had in the home. In the first three years, only one laptop out of 50 broke (though all the AC adapters died). Why is that? It's because of ownership. The kids polished them, made bags for them; they certainly wouldn't get broken. Well, Negroponte still hasn't explained why he hasn't gone with open standards. In fact, a contact at the WSIS LAC Regional meeting asked an MIT person about why they didn't look at the Simputer, and I was told that they couldn't get one. I have one. Plus, the schematics are on Simputer.org. Personally, I think Negroponte is just in the process of creating trade subsidies. I wish someone who had a chance to interview him actually asked some hard questions instead of buying into the MIT hype. Many people are already creating cheap computing for the masses, aside from the Simputer, and they have things that are actually *working*, and don't get as much media spin as Negroponte. -- Taran Rampersad Presently in: San Fernando, Trinidad [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.knowprose.com http://www.easylum.net http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Taran Coming on January 1st, 2006: http://www.OpenDepth.com Criticize by creating. — Michelangelo ___ DIGITALDIVIDE mailing list DIGITALDIVIDE@mailman.edc.org http://mailman.edc.org/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the message.

Re: [DDN] Free/low-cost voicemail for non-profits
Hi Charlie, I use Innoport. It's not free - $4.95 a month - but I get email recordings of my calls, which is great when I travel. Can also receive and send faxes. I haven't opted for their tollfree line, but it's available for more $. Re: [DDN] Free/low-cost voicemail for non-profits
Charlie, I don't know how low is low cost, but Skype offerings are worth checking out. One can get a SkypeIn number (number that can be called from cell and POTS) for approx $36 for a year. And it comes with voicemail. Maybe that is good enough? Bill Anderson Charlie Meisch wrote: All: Is anyone aware of low-cost or (ideally) free voicemail services available to non-profit orgs?
