I've been thinking about this too, since Dan Bassill sent his suggestion.

I'm experimenting with a wiki for helping people with computer problems
and I think it would go well there. The basic concept is at
http://ComputerSelfHelp.org. I was thinking in terms of instructions and
tips, but hardware and software evaluations would be a great addition!
I'd like to work on the organization of the site more before letting
others add and edit content.

Last year we set up ordered groups and categories of computer problems
with plans to use them with TechLinkUp.org. I might be able to use
pieces of that taxonomy to start something in ComputerSelfHelp.org. Let
me make a first pass at this. Then you all can rework it on the PmWiki.
And then I'll move it to use MediaWiki (I think).

PmWiki was very easy for me to install and it's good for getting
started, but MediaWiki has more features and would probably be better
for a large project. www.wikipedia.org uses MediaWiki.

Learning from Katrina: Addressing local needs while responding to the
crisis
Hurricanes and earthquakes have shaken the country and the nonprofit
sector. How do we move forward in this volatile climate?

Hurricane Katrina has left huge challenges in its wake. Nonprofits
throughout the U.S. must help Gulf Coast evacuees assimilate into local
communities, and must better prepare for local disasters. They also
must ask donors who have contributed to Katrina relief efforts to dig
even deeper to tackle critical community problems like poverty and
change public policies on a broad range of social issues.

[DDN] Revised handouts to teach adults basic computer skills

2005-09-30 Thread Judy Hallman

I have revised handouts for four classes RTPnet has used (since 1996) to
teach basic computer skills to adults. They are linked from
http://www.rtpnet.org/collections/comp.shtml.

There's an overview at
http://www.rtpnet.org/collections/handouts/overview.html.

These are step-by-step instructions. They can be used by volunteer
teachers who have not taught before. Students can take home the handouts
and repeat on their own what was covered in class.

I've tried to minimize typing since many people who take our classes
can't type.

The goal is to teach how to use a mouse, how to get around on the
Internet and use email, and then how to continue learning using
http://www.GCFLearnFree.org.

The Internet class is fun! I got carried away with Google maps. You
might want to check out some of the exercises. And reverse lookup at
superpages.com is helpful to me when I get a garbled message in my
answering machine.

We teach Paint in the first class because you don't need to type and
it's fun.

If the content is useful but you prefer to use different software, I'd
be glad to modify what I have to create additional versions. Similarly,
if there is a topic that is needed, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I really like MyWay.com for free email, but would be glad to also do
yahoo, hotmail, and/or others if you find these are better services in
some cases. My Way has a very short simple registration form with
minimal typing required, no ads, good spam filters, and 125.0 MB.

The State library of Louisiana has sent out this call for computer
equipment...

If you are interested and able to send computers, here is the request from
the Louisiana State Librarian, Rebecca Hamilton.

To all--we are in desperate need of computers/printers. We are being
inundated with evacuees needing to file FEMA applications, unemployment,
search for loved ones, etc. and are coming into our public libraries to
use the computers. Our libraries have greatly extended their hours to
accommodate the people but they need additional computers and printers.
If you can please put the word out that if anyone wants to help
immediately, this is our greatest need.

The specs for the computers:
* Pentium 3
* Windows 2000, prefer XP
* Laser printers if you can still get toner for them

Computers may be sent to:

State Library of Louisiana
701 North 4th Street
Baton Rouge, La. 70802-5232

If you are able to assist them by sending computers, please let Rebecca
know via email: Rebecca Hamilton [EMAIL PROTECTED] just to help
them plan. This will help her know what to expect and also help us to
know (if necessary) when to stop sending them there. I am sure that we
will hear from other states about similar needs.

the material is self-paced, clicking through the pages, it helps for a

more likely to get overwhelmed with the detail of information and need
some guidance, as well as get frustrated with the mouse. All in all,
it's a very helpful tool. I dont think it replaces having someone in

[DDN] Information Literacy Competency Standards

2005-02-02 Thread Judy Hallman
To CTCNet members and Digital Divide list:
The information below came from a UNC-Chapel Hill list I'm on. I don't
remember hearing of these standards before. While these standards are
for higher education, I think the concepts are useful to those of us on
these lists.

The file is a .pdf of about 20 pages and comes up slowly for me (and I
have a fast connection).

Ah, there's a HTML version -- much faster. See
http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/informationliteracycompetency.htm
and search for Standard Five .

 Original Message
Today's general topic for discussion will be a chapter from the
Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education from the
American Library Association (ALA), approved by the Board of Directors
of the Association of College and Research Libraries, and endorsed by
the American Association for Higher Education and the Council of
Independent Colleges. We'll talk specifically about Standard 5: The
information literate student understands many of the economic, legal,
and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and
uses information ethically and legally.
You can view the standards at
http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/standards.pdf
Standard 5 begins on page 16 of the 20 page document.
