There's also the fact that there's a very small barrier to subscribing to a mailing list - only people who are particularly interested in it will bother. I've seen the mailing list approach used elsewhere because of this, and it works well. Why would you put up a barrier for beta-testing? The concurrency mailing list I can understand (that's Andrei's thing).

I originally suggested that it just be in the .announce newsgroup.
