Where is the article? I looked at the hamradionet.org site and didn't
 see it posted there.

I wrote an article today about NBEMS for my website... Would someone more

 and didn't anything important out?

Appreciate! - Comment here or in an eMail if you prefer.

[digitalradio] Yet Another New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group

2009-11-15 Thread Thomas F. Giella NZ4O
Posted Sunday November 15, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm
Yesterday yet another solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged, this time in the
NE quadrant of the Sun near N29E35. As of yet it has not received a number
by SIDC Belgium or NOAA/SWPC. If numbered by NOAA/SWPC it would receive
#11031.

This new sunspot group pushed the solar flux index (SFI) to 75.9 yesterday
and could push the SFI above 80 in coming days. This would raise the maximum
usable frequency (MUF) of the F layer high enough to improve propagation
conditions on 20, 17 and 15 meters.

Under the very old method of counting sunspots SIDC Belgium gave the sunspot
group a number of 11. But in reality only one simple sunspot actually
emerged.

The solar cycle 24 sunspot group that emerged on Friday November 13, 2009
that received SIDC Belgium Catania #25 and located in the SW quadrant of the
Sun has faded, with it's remnant Plage currently setting around the west
limb of the Sun. It did not receive #11031 by NOAA/SWPC.

Also yesterday old solar cycle 24 sunspot group #11029 rose above the east
limb of the Sun but is only a large Plage with no sunspots. Last month
#11029 made it's debut as the largest and most active sunspot group in
fledgling solar cycle 24.

However, the frequency that you have chosen is not one of the ones
authorised in the UK, so I will not be able to reply of course.

I wonder why you chose 5.350MHz? I believe that 5.290MHz
MHz is authorised in Norway as I have heard LA stations having SSB
contacts when I have been monitoring GB3RAL and the other UK beacons.

There is some WSPR activity below the CW beacons and I am seeing G0KTN
on 5.288.685MHz and PA3ABK is monitoring as well, according to the
WSPRnet map at http://wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/map

My own transmissions using WSPR in MEPT_JT mode are currently running on
5.288.700MHz. I'll shut WSPR down in a moment or two and will then run
WSJT7 to listen on 5.350MHz for JT65A.

The only information on the Norwegian frequencies on 60M that I can find

Center FrequencyUSB Dial Frequency
5280 kHz5278.5 kHz
5290 kHz5288.5 kHz
5332 kHz5330.5 kHz

5368 kHz5366.5 kHz
5373 kHz5371.5 kHz
5400 kHz5398.5 kHz
5405 kHz5403.5 kHz

all with a 3kHz bandwidth.

5350 plus 1270 gives 5351.27kHz, of course, but that doesn't appear to
fit into any of the 3kHz sections. The nearest appears to be 5348kHz,
but that 'channel' ends at 5349.5kHz.

I guess you have an experimental licence, like the ones issued in
Germany for 70MHz, where you have a specific spot frequency allocated to
you?

I'll set my dial frequency a little below 5350kHz and will see if I can
see any signals.

Re: [digitalradio] JT65A Beacon on 60m

2009-11-15 Thread Steinar Aanesland

Hi Dave

In Norway the band 5260 - 5410 kHz is now open for general Amateur
Radio use.

The band is not channelized. The allocation is secondary and power is
limited to 100 watts.

To avoid conflicts with other country's channels the Norwegian Radio
Relay League (NRRL) has decided that we shall use:

CW: 5305 - 5315 kHz
QRP: 5335 kHz
All mode: 5335 - 5340 kHz
Digital: 5350 - 5360 kHz
USB: 5375 - 5394 kHz

Norwegian HAM's will only use the channels in QSO with HAM's outside
Norway.

Hello Steinar,

I left my transceiver on duty and that is what I got (QTH near Paris). I
used Multipsk without KVASD (to avoid false detections) so the minimum S/N
was -24 dB (hard decision) instead of -26 dB (soft decision).
Your signal was very weak (-20 to -25 dB) but still decodable in JT65.

Many years ago , when I was an NTS NCS, we would abandon use of
repeaters once per month and run a simplex night.  Operators would use
net time to call up a net from their QTH and work whomever answers.  I
am proposing we do the same , each 15th of the month at 8PM local
time.  Suggested frequency is 145.00 FM.   Suggested procedure=
Listen first... if there is someone calling CQ Digital Simplex Night
, answer them.  If you hear no one, call CQ Digital Simplex Night a
few times .  If someone answers, simply have a chat.  You decide the
content of your net, send a file or canned message if you are so
inclined, no requirements  You also decide which digital mode to use.
Log the call signs and QTH of each station you hear.  This will enable
you to develop your own database of stations that are in simplex range
of your QTH.    If you live close enough to an area that is in a
different time zone and 8PM comes around more than once, feel free to
 check-in a second time.

Upload your heard list to this email group.

[digitalradio] Digital on 2M FM: Audio settings ?

2009-11-15 Thread Andy obrien
Hmmm. Well I thought it would be simple enough to transmit digital
modes on 2M FM but one issue I just ran in to is the ALC is very high
and my usual method of lowering it has no effect. I also lowered the
mic gain but that had no impact. Something simple I am not taking in
to account when using FM ?

Doesn't the ALC behave differenty when runnning FM?

That's what I am guessing...not much of an FM operator

I would guess, that setting the audio on the low side would be preferable.

In the packet days, we used to set out deviation to 3.0 - 3.5 KHz as it
assured us of never over deviating. As long as we got at least 10 dB
quieting in the rx'er, we experienced fewer retries.

2009-11-15 Thread W5XR
The carrier has a constant level on FM, so the ALC doesn't mean much. If
you want to monitor the drive level you would need to monitor the deviation.
If you could monitor the transmitter, that would probably work.

2009-11-15 Thread Tony
Andy,

I believe you have a Kenwood TS2K(?). If so, there is a way to control the
digital mode audio level on FM. If you're feeding the audio through the
microphone connector, menu 41 has a low, medium and high setting. If your using
the 13 pin DIN plug, the audio input can be adjusted via menu # 50.
