Re: [digitalradio] Unknown Digital signal????

2010-08-21 Thread Dave Wright
There are some known European users in that range, but without a recording, it
would difficult to say for certain what it is and where is it coming from.

However, keep in mind that while this frequency range is assigned to amateur
radio exclusively in Region 2, that is not the case in Europe and Asia, and so
you have military, governmental and other users that are authorized to use the
band.

Andy,
I am sick and tired of reading the political comments and name calling
about ROS. The discussion has devolved from a discussion (too long,
IMHO) about the technical aspects of ROS to personal attacks and
political discussions about which laws we in the USA should obey,
neither of which have anything to do with digital radio.

Can we please call a halt? I get the digest form of the discussion
group, and have to wade through all these diatribes to find the one or
two useful messages in each one. It didn't used to be this way.

The FCC specificly allows multiple-subcarrier transmissions on HF but bans
"spead spectrum emissions using bandwidth-expansion modulation."
Multiple-subcarrier modes don't have to increase the bandwidth as the signal is
split into N parallel streams and each can occupy 1/N the bandwidth of the
original.

The term "Spread Spectrum" can apply to any mode that spreads its
energy over more than the necessary bandwidth. If we assume the necessary
bandwidth to be equal to the signalling rate than anything other than single
carrier modes technically fall into this category.

Even WSPR coul dbe considered spread spectrum! Its 6Hz bandwidth is
wider than the 1.5 B/s rate.Within the WSJT suite, JT65 is more of a spread
spectrum mode, and outside Joe's suite, MT63 with its 2.5kHz for a few tens of
Bits / second is even more extreme.

Strictly, CW is a three symbol code with source coding (variable length
alphabet, like varicode) with soft decision coding, and mild FEC (operators
interpretation of the code based on S/N) and some convolutional coding with
soft decisions (matching characters received against patterns / words.

Once you start using soft decision decoding, error correction and mult-
bit-per-symbol waveforms, it becomes a bit difficult to really call anything a
digital modulation at all. Especially when analogue processing is mostly
performed digitally now, anyway

Hmmm. I wish I had seen Skip's comment before I posted my last one.
How about this:

3500-3550 CW only
3550-3580 Any modes, with wide data modes starting just below 3580,
  and working down
3580-4000 Any modes <500 Hz.

Narrow data modes stay where they are now; wide modes grow down, CW
grows up, and they meet in the middle as needed. The boundary between
suggested CW-only and suggested wide data could be 3540 (like
Bonnie's proposal) or 3550 (my previous suggestion), without it mattering
too much, since they grow towards each other as needed.

There was only one station being heard on that
frequency, the 6O which had been there for quite some time.  (And of course
the ones that never get the word and call him simplex when he is listening up
the band.  Whatever it was came up, and we immediately started loosing the
6O contacts here in the states.

  FYI

from about 2130Z, there were a number of VE and
European SSB stations on and about 7065, since the band was open and they can
  legitimately
  tx there.

As well there were a number of VE5,VE6 and VE7
stations in QSO, ( I was one of them) that meet regularly on 7065. about that
time of day, from about 2000Z onward.

So tell me, did you attempt to tx over them or
wait until the frequency was clear?

I was on voice, split operation. 6O was transmitting that freq when this
buzz buzz came up. Probably Pactor, as I dont work it, and can only assume
it was of that type. He certainly didnt listen, nor ask using any other
mode, if the freq was in use.
