Hello John,

You must normally start the Instal.exe to instal Multipsk (which will create
and fill the Maps sub-directory). You can also copy the Multipsk Maps
sub-directory from another Multipsk implantation.

The SDR feature in Multipsk is only doing a I/Q
processing, shifting in base band, in USB or LSB, a selected
band (inside the 48, 96 or 192 KHz SdR band).

Now as I discovered, thanks to Andy, is that
professional SdR are controlled through a defined protocol,

Perhaps, Dave (AA6YQ) will add, in the future, through

  Andy,

Thanks for posting your CPU test results with Multipsk. Patrick mentioned
that he doesn't think RAM is important in this case and adding more than the
minimum memory requirement wouldn't change anything; I guess that leaves the
processor.

It just seems odd that there would be a large disparity in CPU usage since
both processors run similar clock speeds (yours is actually faster). My Dell
has a Pentium dual core E2200 and I'm wondering if the difference is due to the
dual vs. single core?

Interesting data , Tony. I am was surprised that our similar computers have
so dissimilar results. So , I checked a few things on different PCs here at my
location. Here are my results, The CPU demand is based on maximizing
Multipsk's tasks (SDR-Direct active, with full RS-ID on and regular waterfall
at 4 Khz) . Casual readers of this thread should note that Multipsk under most
common scenarios for ham radio, uses much less CPU than below.

Shack Computer (Dell Opitiplex GX260 , 2.3 Ghz CPU single core , 1 gig RAM.
Windows XP. Multipsk = 95-100+ % (not usable)
Home PC (Dell Optiplex GX270 , 2.7 CPU single core , 512 RAM, WIndows XP.
Multipsk = 65%  , worked well.)
Low end Acer Latop , 3 gig RAM, Windows 7. . Multipsk = 75%, worked fine.

Ironic that the one PC I want to get Multipsk to work on is the one PC that
it does poorly on ! The good news is that when maximizing Multipsk on a basic
PC , with not a lot of other things multi-tasking, Multipsk will work. I am
especially pleased to see it work well on the Windows 7 laptop which only cost
$247.00

So while the desktop computers do not have identical parameters (different
system files, ect) , I am intrigued about the 30-35% less CPU demand on the PC
with only 512 RAM but .4 Ghz more processing speed . Does .4 ghz more speed
usually make that much difference.. Your outcomes , Tony, also intrige me
about what difference I might discover if I add another gig of RAM to my 2.3
CPU ham PC.

I configured Multipsk as you described and the CPU usage seems to average
about 5 percent. Panoramic mode is about the same. I've included a few screen

Mixw seems to tax the CPU the same way as Multipsk does, but Fldigi needs a
bit more to run - CPU usage jumped to 10%. I guess it's the difference in RAM.

Would like to hear how the Vista laptop works out. Please let use know.

Tony, my shack PC sounds like yours. A Dell P4, 2.3 CPU , but only 1 gig of
RAM. Perhaps we can compare current system resource utilization for regular
Multipsk ?

Regular Multipsk in PSK31 mode with a 4,3 Khz waterfall uses 25 % of CPU.
With RS ID on , about the same 25-26%

With Panoramic decode.. CPU increases to around 30%.

Then Multipsk with Direct I/Q mode invoked , CPU increases to 60%

Then RS ID in SDR /IQ direct invoked, Multipsk uses 9

Re: [digitalradio] Multipsk- CPU tests with SDR-IQ Direct active.

2010-01-30 Thread Tony
Andy,

In my case, the CPU usage jumps to about 10% with the SDR
function running; that's about 2 1/2 times what Multipsk
uses when running without SDR.

Well, you can run the SDR part of Multipsk (just press SDR
I/Q Direct button in the configuration area, then press
RX/TX to return to the main screen. Then you will see the
SDR waterfall open up. The problem is that without an SDR,
you will only get up to khz of signal, same as the regular
waterfall. Som other than testing CPU load, it defeats the
purpose.

I am guessing you are correct about the dual versus single
core. I may try to minimize the other items that my PC
boots at start up , but they aree not listed by the Task
Manager as taking much CPU.

Interesting data , Tony. I am was surprised that our
similar computers have so dissimilar results. So , I
checked a few things on different PCs here at my location.
Here are my results, The CPU demand is based on maximizing
Multipsk's tasks (SDR-Direct active, with full RS-ID on and
regular waterfall at 4 Khz) . Casual readers of this thread
should note that Multipsk under most common scenarios for
ham radio, uses much less CPU than below.

Shack Computer (Dell Opitiplex GX260 , 2.3 Ghz CPU single
core , 1 gig RAM. Windows XP. Multipsk = 95-100+ % (not
usable)
Home PC (Dell Optiplex GX270 , 2.7 CPU single core , 512
RAM, WIndows XP. Multipsk = 65% , worked well.)
Low end Acer Latop , 3 gig RAM, Windows 7. . Multipsk =
75%, worked fine.

Ironic that the one PC I want to get Multipsk to work on is
the one PC that it does poorly on ! The good news is that
when maximizing Multipsk on a basic PC , with not a lot of
other things multi-tasking, Multipsk will work. I am
especially pleased to see it work well on the Windows 7
laptop which only cost $247.00

So while the desktop computers do not have identical
parameters (different system files, ect) , I am intrigued
about the 30-35% less CPU demand on the PC with only 512 RAM
but .4 Ghz more processing speed . Does .4 ghz more speed
usually make that much difference.. Your outcomes , Tony,
also intrige me about what difference I might discover if I
add another gig of RAM to my 2.3 CPU ham PC.

Andy,

I configured Multipsk as you described and the CPU usage
seems to average about 5 percent. Panoramic mode is about
the same. I've included a few screen shots so you could see
the results.

Mixw seems to tax the CPU the same way as Multipsk does, but
Fldigi needs a bit more to run - CPU usage jumped to 10%. I
guess it's the difference in RAM.

Would like to hear how the Vista laptop works out. Please
let use know.

Tony, my shack PC sounds like yours. A Dell P4, 2.3 CPU ,
but only 1 gig of RAM. Perhaps we can compare current
system resource utilization for regular Multipsk ?

Regular Multipsk in PSK31 mode with a 4,3 Khz waterfall uses
25 % of CPU.
With RS ID on , about the same 25-26%

With Panoramic decode.. CPU increases to around 30%.

Then Multipsk with Direct I/Q mode invoked , CPU
increases to 60%

Then RS ID in SDR /IQ direct invoked, Multipsk uses 90% of
my CPU.

The above is JUST Multipsk related, obviously other
applications , like a web browser being open, add more
demand.

My daughter is away skiing this weekend, so I may "borrow"
her Vista laptop and do a comparison. I do not know what is
realistic for Multipsk with all its SDR receive capability
and RS ID. I don;t really understand what actual
performance increase one could expect if CPU was 3.0 Ghz
rather than 2.3, Also not sure what performance improvement
going to a dual core around the same clock speed would
produce. On my shack PC, Multipsk seems "close" , I am
guessing if I could eek out another 10% it would run just
fine. I'm reluctant to put more RAM in to an old machine,
but I do have a compatible 1 Gig memory chip that i could
pilfer from another PC and see if 2 gigs of RAM ease demand
on the CPU. I'm guessing it would not make much difference.
I do have plenty of HD space.

Hope you and the family are all OK,

Andy.

Re: [digitalradio] Multipsk Help Files - Vista

2009-09-08 Thread Patrick Lindecker
Hello Tony,

Here is a solution to this generic Windows problem:

The problem with downloaded .CHM files is caused by Windows. Whenever
a .CHM file is downloaded from the Internet, Windows considers it to
be a security risk and blocks it from being executed. You can clear
this block as follows:

1. Use Windows Explorer (or My Computer, or My Documents) to find the
file in your file system.

2. Right-click on the file with your mouse.

3. A pop-up menu will appear. The very last entry in the menu
is "Properties". Click on this menu item.

4. You will now see a dialog box titled (filename).chm Properties
(where (filename) is replaced by the name of the file). If the file
has been blocked by Windows, then near the bottom of this dialog box
you will see the following:

"Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked
to help protect this computer."

To the right of this message there will be a button called "Unblock".
Click on this button.

The file should now start working.

You will have to repeat this procedure every time you download a new
version of the .CHM file.

Re: [digitalradio] Multipsk Lock transmit freq

2009-08-10 Thread Patrick Lindecker
Hello Stan,

For this select "Master" in the "Mode" box.

A word about Master/Slave mode.

In Master:
* in RX you follow the drift of the other Ham,
* afterwards, in TX you come back to your initial RX frequency, so you
impose your frequency and avoid a possible drift along the waterfall.

In Slave:
* in RX you follow the drift of the other Ham,
* afterwards, in TX you start at the final RX frequency.

The ideal would be to have only one Master, but you can't know the position
(Slave or Master)
of the other Ham...More ideal would be to have both stable XCVRs (after one
working hour, normally modern XCVRs are stable).

Hello Ken,

You don't need any licence to use JT65. Below I have added the help part for

JT65 transmission.

To abstract, from the default state, for example, push on the "CQ or QRZ"

button. The transmission will be automatically done.

Here are some hints about Multipsk use. I must add that in JT65, the PC

clock must be adjusted, but you must know it as you success decoding JT65.

Patrick

Multipsk hints:

- It is strongly recommended to calibrate the sound-card: click on the

"Adjustments" menu button, then select the "Determination of the RX/TX

sound-card sampling frequencies" option and push on the "Determination of

the 48 KHz RX sampling frequency (test on 3 minutes)" button. At the end of

the test, click on "Return",

Note about the sound level ("Level" indication in % at the top of the

screen): an AF level superior or equal to 10 % is OK. About 50 % is ideal

(but not critical). In case of very low AF level, select "16 bits" in the

"Determination of the RX/TX sound-card sampling frequencies" option

("Adjustments" menu button),

About the help in Multipsk:

- To bring up the text help (contextual sensitive one), click on the right

button of the mouse, with the cursor over the mode button "KISS", for

example).

- Also use the button hints (wait a fraction of second over a button).

JT65 transmission

The JT65 does correct only weak frequency drifts. So, the user will let the

transceiver (XCVR) warms up for one hour and a half to stabilize its

frequency (duration function of you XCVR, as modern XCVR stabilizes

rapidly).

As said before, the text of the message to be transmitted is either

formatted or it is free. In the second case, the message is limited to 13

characters when, in the first case, more characters are transmitted because

the information is compressed, but the Ham is not free to write what he/she

wants.

The message ready to be sent is displayed in a green label, to the right of

"To send:".

It is reminded that there are 3 ways to send a message:

1) immediatly, with the "Automat. TX" button OFF and both "Beacons" button

OFF, if a message is clicked ("CQ or QRZ", for example),

2) automatically at the second 1 (or from the second 1 to the second 7, in

case of Ham delay) , with the "Automat. TX" button ON and the "Beacons"

button OFF, if a message is clicked ("CQ or QRZ", for example) before the

second 8,

3) automatically beaconing at each odd or even minute (at the second 1),

pushing either "Beacon odd/mn" button or "Beacon even/mn" button, if a

message is clicked ("CQ or QRZ", for example). The "Automat. TX" button can

be OFF or ON.

The standard way is the one described in 2).

This is a first VHF (EME) example of minimum QSO (with formatted messages):

1) CQ F6CTE JN18 (key "Escape" or "Esc" for blind Hams)

2) F6CTE F9XYZ JN07 (key "F1" for blind Hams)

3) F9XYZ F6CTE -20 OOO (key "F2" for blind Hams)

4) RO (key "F9" for blind Hams)

5) RRR (key "F10" for blind Hams)

6) 73 (key "F11" for blind Hams)

1) F6CTE calls CQ.

2) F9XYZ answers to F6CTE.

3) F6CTE confirms the reception of the F9XYZ answer adding "OOO" ("Your

signals are weak but I have copied both of our callsigns" or more simply "I

have copied both of our callsigns"). "-20" is the S/N ratio in dB of the

received message (this information is automatically inserted by Multipsk).

4) "RO" is the acknowledgment of F9XYZ.

5) F6CTE sends "RRR" to say that the QSO is finished.

6) F9XYZ sends the traditional "73" to complete the QSO.

The QSO could be enriched with other formatted messages or non-formatted

messages. For more détails, report to the "JT65 TX panel" above.

It is advised to transmit either on the odd minutes or on the even minutes.

You use it, first, in the free version first, it is widely enough for all
Ham modes. Afterwards, if you need the licensed functions (mainly
professional modes decoding as SYNOP/SHIP, ACARS...), you could ask for the
licence.

There is nothing else that the Help (there is a presentation of Multipsk in
http://f6cte.free.fr but it is much more about modes) .
Notes about the help in Multipsk:

a.. To bring up the text help (contextual one), click on the right button
of the mouse, with the focus over the mode button "ALE400", for example).
b.. Also use the button hints (wait a fraction of second over a button).
Now for precise help about DXLabs you have a Yahoo group. You have also a
Yahoo group for Multipsk users (don't hesitate to ask questions in both
groups).

Re: [digitalradio] Multipsk : Macro's in contests

2008-02-14 Thread Andrew O'Brien
Yes, there IS a way to have separate Multipsk macro buttons just for
contests without having to pres CTRL each time. Actually two ways.

1. Have TWO separate folders for Multipsk on you PC. Configure the
macros in one folder for regular use, configure the other for
contests. When working a contest, book the Multipsk contest folder.

2. Have just one incidence of Multipsk on you PC BUT have two sets
of macros. Example, in Multipsk the Macros you use are F1 through
F24. Using a text editor, create two copies of each macro you want.
F1 for regular use might say "CQ CQ CQ " , F1 for contest use might
say "CQ CQ Contest". Save the two sets of macros to a zip file. When
you need the contest macros , unzip them to you Multipsk and have then
over write you regular macro files. After the contest unzip your
regular macros (which you will have also zipped) over the contest
macros. This will only take a 3-5 seconds each contest, after initial
creation of the two sets of macros. If you want different macro
button labels . you will also need to edit N files too.

Re: [digitalradio] MULTIPSK CW

2006-03-09 Thread Patrick Lindecker
Hello Dave,

If I transmit via the Windows buffering in a tone to the sound card, no
problem. If I transmit through the serial port, I need to control the time
ellapsed (for a dot or a dash). As under Windows there are no interruptions
(sniff), there is no way to know at which moment is the end of the dot (or
the dash). So I keep the CPU working in a loop, testing the Windows timer,
until the end of the dot. It is not a very elegant method but I don't know
an other way to do it.
Note: the Delphi system timer is not sufficiently rapid (maximum between 20
to 60 /sec).

A 50% cpu load seems really high, Patrick. WinWarbler consumes less than 1%

Hello Bill and Paul,

Multipsk can directly key the transceiver (I use it this way). However, it
is not advised under Windows XP because it takes about 50 % of the computing

power (due to the obligation to manage a pseudo "timer").

The most simple to do CW is to do it as PSK31 (in USB).

In reality, that's how your rig probably generates CW

By injecting an audio tone into a SSB transmitter.

When you say won't do "regular" cw... do you mean
keying a circuit open and closed so you can connect it

Thank you very much, Patrick. This was the "problem." It is so simple
... when you know how:)

2006-01-09 Thread Patrick Lindecker
Hello Rick,

You must have selected the "Software mixer" option of the mixer menu on the
Configuration screen. In that case, the sound card mixer is managed directly
by the program, this to adjust the optimum level (Automatic Gain Control).
The problem is the diversity of sound card mixers which don't allow
operation in all sound cards mixers.

Re: [digitalradio] MultiPSK query

2005-12-20 Thread Patrick Lindecker
Hello Mel,

Position the mouse over a macro (sequence), click right, you are in the
sequence edition where you will find macros for sending the call and the
name of the contacted Ham.

There are two set of sequences (with and without ) so 24 possible
sequences).

For this type of question, the best is to go to the Multipsk Yahoo group.

Curious, perhaps a bad downloading. Try again, if it continues, PSE send me
a snapshot.

However, the modes can be selected from the button "Mode".
