freedom is also important, but we each decide our own priorities. i have
been quite happy with gnucash for almost decades. i have very simple
requirements, though. i glance through the release notes for gnucash and
there seems to be many new features that it keeps adding [most likely
prompted by quicken], but i don't use them. each situation is probably
going to be different.

for taxes, again, i have a simple situation of one income from one
employer. but my solution has been to use the paper forms. as a web
programmer, i just don't trust the other end ... of course, i'm probably
in no better situation regarding privacy; nonetheless, there is
something satisfying about using an outdated method to interact with a
huge bureaucracy, but i think it has little to do with the technologies
involved ...

i can understand your desire to protect your nieces from the craziness
and darkness that humans put up on the network; however, any technical
solution is bound to be imperfect [as you and others have pointed out].
a different approach would be to monitor the traffic with a log and then
review and discuss what is necessary.

as the father of three that have passed or are passing through
adolescence i can tell you there are many things that are outside of
your control. good luck.

chrome was cool- but it never had the open source sheen that i look for

i'd encourage you to think about opera- much lighter. doesn't always
display as designers intend [due to bad source HTML usually], but it works
pretty well for me [maybe it's because of the simplistic sites i visit,
but that's another matter].

I'm thinking it's time to replace my TZ190, it's old, and kind of low end

i had one of the original linksys WRTs and just retired it as i kept
needing to restart it in order to get the wireless to work. i think it had
to do with the WPA2 encryption i was trying to run on it ... when i
switched to WPA it wasn't as problematic.

i eventually went to overstock.com and picked up a netgrear WNDR3700v3
which is like going from a broken down tricycle to a new hybrid [bicycle,
that is]. so new hardware is often worth it.

i've used many of the firmware replacements and all of them are better
than the linksys firmware. earlier someone was hating on tomato, but it
worked fine for me. as a programmer, and open source proponent, i find the
openWRT project to be the most to my liking. it supposedly runs on my new
router, but so does DD-WRT and it's installed [couldn't find openWRT
firware when i installed and configured it]. one weekend i may try change
the firmware.

so, if you absolutely don't want to spend money, try the other firmwares-
but you'll probably be happier with new hardware.

good luck!

[Discuss] license haiku

2013-01-25 Thread \js

hi

given the recent discussions, i thought some members of this list might
enjoy this:

http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/000360

regarding haiku, i am of the mind that by sticking slavishly to the
syllable counts, you lose the poetry part; but that's a discussion for
another list ...
