Re: [tdf-discuss] Name Change for LibreOffice Applications

I think the present names are good, but I could also see a need to
differentiate from OO, especially if the plan is to rewrite LO and
take a very different path, thus making it a significantly different
application than its parent OO.

Another issue with Google docs is when you click to download a file,
it has an option called "OpenOffice" as a format option. As we all can
guess there is a problem here because
1. Openoffice is a product and not a format
2. this could confuse people who use Abiword, Koffice and LibreOffice
and simply want ODF (which is what the format is downloaded as).

I think this is a valid and a clear dividing aspect of OO especially
when compared to MS and Apple products. MSO is developed and marketed
with the business user in mind, whereas Apple products are designed,
then developed then marketed. OO just seems to be developed and the
user and overall design are an afterthought.

just my thoughts.

never used quickstarter, under windows it is disabled

Writer = 85%
Calc = 15%

[tdf-discuss] where do i submit bugs?

2010-11-06 Thread Frank Esposito
Although I have been a OO user for many years, I never really cared about
the development of the project because I thought Sun would never listen to
just one person. Then when Oracle bought Sun, I gave up on the product
entirely. Now however, with the document foundation, I actually see a real
chance that input from someone like me can actually help the project.

So I would like to help. Where can I submit bugs for Libre Office??

Thanks

Re: [tdf-discuss] x86_64 Windows build

2010-11-04 Thread Frank Esposito
Yes I am aware of some of the difficulties but I think this could be a nice
feature as OOo will most likely not be offering 64-bit Windows builds. And
since MSO 2010 is now available in 64bit

Just another feature to differentiate LO form OO (IMHO)

I have to say, if that was the case, then no one would have upped to
2007/2010. The last company I worked for who upgraded spent millions on
training and roll-out costs.

I just don't think corporations, especially the bigger ones trust "free"

The point of the MSO-to-ODF and ODF-to-MSO converters not working 100% and
being a deal-breaker has been raised several times already. But I am not
sure as to what is being done as far as development. I think the devs are
just trying to clean up the existing code, work in long awaited patches and
stabilize for the 3.3 release right now.

But for the future, if LO is going to battle for market share with MSO,
(which the world currently uses now), the converters will have to be fixed.
There are two sides, Side one is that Microsoft does not follow standards
and ODF does so we should just make LO work to standards. Side two is we
should play Microsoft's game until we take their game away from them.

I see two priorities for long-term growth:
File compatibility should be a priority, in the very least opening and
saving MSO files with full compatibility

ODF adoption should also be a priority, the more LO can get the world to use
ODF instead of Microsft, the more people will use Libre/Open Office and the
more likely the chance Microsoft will have to fix their non-standards
compliant, broken file format.

just my thoughts
