My opinion, the user should be able to decide if it's completely Automatic,

The important thing as I see it is to have a system where it will only
download and update what is needed and not require a complete
replacement of the entire program every time there is a minor bug fix or
whatever. This is why I never update any of my non-incremental update,
applications for anything less than a major upgrade, example, from
version 3.0 to version 4.0

Something akin to Mozilla's release, beta and nightly update channels
should prove useful. LibreOffice could certainly learn a few things from
Mozilla's approach to automatic updates and/or add-on discovery and
installation.

Re: [tdf-discuss] Automatic Update / Update info

2011-01-24 Thread Jaime R. Garza
Hallo Rene,

I meant that the user should be notified and if the user has Admin rights,
then they can automatically update, if not, well, then should be prompted
that they need Admin rights to do so. But if everything in one step is too
much, then I'll suggest:

1st Step: Notification
2nd Step: Automatic Upgrade, downloading the whole new installable and
starting it, which should first remove the old version.
3rd Step: Automatic Upgrade, with no need to remove, but only to patch the
previous version

And of course, for the Linux version, in my opinion it makes no sense, since
usually the update is made by the system based on the repositories. At least
I use .deb based Distros, which take care of the upgrades for me. Still it
would be nice to be notified if there where newer available version which
are not provided my my current repository.

I'm not a developer, so I have no means to do it my self or even support
doing it, but I'm just making suggestions here, I'm not requesting or
imposing anything, so I apologize if that seemed different.

Schöne Grüsse / Cheers / Saludos

Jaime

Hallo Rene,

You also need Admin rights to install under Windows, but that's not the
point. The point is that the user should be notified that there is a new
version.

If he or she can install it, that's not our problem.

No.

You need root for install, you use the office as user (everything else

Obviously if I have a stable version installed, I don't expect to be

Re: [tdf-discuss] Automatic Update / Update info

2011-01-24 Thread Charles-H. Schulz
So, we're talking about some discussions that took place during the
OpenOffice time, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away :-)
I don't remember why we had chosen not to implement it for betas/RC ,
there was supposedly a good reason for that but I completely forgot
about it. Let me ask anyway.

@Mike: apps that notifies users when another software can be updated
exist a lot on the mac but here Jaime was mentioning one specific
feature of LibreOffice that notifies the user directly and, possibly,
updates LibO by itself.

best,
Charles.

Re: [tdf-discuss] Automatic Update / Update info

2011-01-24 Thread Jaime R. Garza
I would love to, if I could! Maybe I'll have to learn how to make extensions
and probably make one.

If it's already implemented for the stable releases, why not add it to the
RCs too, as optional?

Cheers!

such a feature, you're welcome to upload a patch :-)

2011-01-24 Thread Charles-H. Schulz
Hi,

Actually that does already exist, if I'm not misstaken, except it does
not do anything with uninstall the old version. But there's an alert on
the desktop that notifies the user when there's a new version (same
with extensions btw).

Best,
Charles.

Re: [tdf-discuss] Automatic Update / Update info

2011-01-24 Thread Jaime R. Garza
Why not make a simple solution in the meantime?

Only tell the user there is a new version, and a link to the new version.
Obviously the installable of the new version should be able to automatically
de-install the old version. That should be actually very easy, don't you
think so?

Cheers!

It would be an excellent idea, and many thought about it, but the
question is how feasible it is. I'm sure it is possible but it requires
quite a lot of resources, time, etc. So don't expect it in the 3.4...

best,
Charles.

I second this as required. I think even Linux but then that will be
distro specific.

[tdf-discuss] Automatic Update / Update info

2011-01-24 Thread Jaime R. Garza
Hello all,

for when is it planned to have Automatic Update for Windows & Mac
LibreOffice, for Linux usually makes no sense?

My opinion, the user should be able to decide if it's completely Automatic,
or they only get an info pop window, offering a one click update.

Cheers!

Jaime
