Re: [tdf-discuss] LO & OO are not the only competitors of MSOffice... LO could also make a simple office suite that runs in Android & iOS

2011-04-08 Thread Laurence Jeloudev
If LO didn't have any bugs and it worked very well compared to the
free version of a bugged OO that had many problems then people would
choose to buy LO because obviously they see the benefits of using a
free version on there desktop of LO that doesn't have many bugs that
are as bad as OO so they would buy the mobile version assuming it
would be the same.

It's as long as the product works and is easy to use.

Basically, it needs to be rewritten in a language that can be compiled

The usual language is Java, but at least one C++ compiler that
accomplishes the same effect exists.

If one c++ compiler already exists then wouldnt it be easy as just

telling

the compiler to compile?

Almost certainly not, it most likely needs to be able to support the
proper Android APIs to work properly. And that is only to get it
working as-is, without any reworking of the UI to be better on a
touch-based device.

That program has not opened any of my ODT documents.

Reading the marketplace comments, it looks like it can only open
documents that are extremely small.

Impress requires Draw.

Which means that the only components you would toss out would be the
database component, and the Math Formula component.

Basically, it needs to be rewritten in a language that can be compiled
into Dalvik Bytecode.

The usual language is Java, but at least one C++ compiler that
accomplishes the same effect exists.

My little android device has more RAM, more file storage space, a faster
chip, and a larger screen than the original Kaypro has.

I do have an app on my little Android device that can open ODF
spreadsheets, but not ODF text documents.

If I didn't have so many other projects, I'd be spending time porting
most of the software I use on my *Nix box to Android. As it is, I have
to make time porting at least two of those *Nix applications to Android.

For me, there is no sense in the discussion, in a couple of years or
less, the new phones will have the power to run any OS, like Linux or
Windows, surely they can now.
It's the better way, to waste the efforts to get Libo or OOo runing in
Android or similar, and use in a four-six inches windows, for to do what?
I'm an intensive user of Libo (Calc-Write-Base) and I never use s my

Saddly they are not willing to wait, they want something that's already
there now and working. So that's why it seem that they will go with
Thinkfree for now. Because it has a great intercompatibility with MSOffice
2003 formats and it runns on everything, even Android & iPads. The license
costs of Thinkfree are extremely low in comparison with MSOffice.

If you work for such a large corporation/entity, then perhaps your
employer would be interested in funding the initiative of porting
LibreOffice to mobile platform(s), or even send in some developers.
Otherwise we will have to do this on our own timing and resources I'm

About the top quote, it this how it's supposed to be? Isn't it better the
other way? At least for me it is.

About being involved in a business, yes I am, I work for a large company
(around 400,000 employees).

About the Blackberry, I really think is more important to see into the
future, where Android & iPhone will dominate, even in the Business. And
please don't forget that even RIM (makers of Blackberry) has decided to
produce compatibility to Android apps.

We are are analyzing which Office Suite to use for non-Windows devices, and
probably Thinkfree is going to win, since there is no other real contender.

This said, are any of you involved in business? If so, maybe you use a

So let's start to think to create *also* a light version for Blackberry OS.

There are others as well, such as koffice and calligra. The latter
already has a dedicated mobile version with its own UI and I think an
Android port of this is planned (it requires Qt be ported to android,
which is already pretty far along).

Well, I consistently advise to use free software (not freeware!) and
open standards.

Thinkfree has great compatibility with MS formats (still the
defacto-standards)

Hm. The fact, that most people are using it, doesn´t make a standard.

and runs in all platforms including Android and iOS.

A big advantage, no doubt.

The advise here is that LO developers should try to focus on making those
three 3 apps available as soon as possible for Android& iOS.

This would mean to recode the whole Software from scratch, I fear.

However, as far as I understand, LibreOffice developers are very
well aware of the desire of running the suite on mobile devices. It
somehow is wishful thinking. ;-)

It is not wishful thinking. Someone as part of the GSoC (google summer
of code) is working on getting LO on android. Mac is a problem due to
licensing, the big chunks of code which are licensed form oracle would
have to go or be rewritten, and everything also licensed with the
appropriate license for mac to get it accepted into the app store

2011-03-31 Thread Jaime R. Garza
Hello Stefan ,

"disadvise"?

It's not about advise or not, is about platform-independence!

Thinkfree has great compatibility with MS formats (still the
defacto-standards) and runs in all platforms including Android and iOS.

The advise here is that LO developers should try to focus on making those
three 3 apps available as soon as possible for Android & iOS.

(1) They plan to support ODF on the next version.

(2) Yes, exactly as MSOffice

;-)

For me, two heavy reasons to disadvise this software. ;-)

2011-03-31 Thread Jaime R. Garza
Dear all,

I have read that some of you believe there are no other true competitors to
MSOffice, but LO & OO.

There is a simple Office Suite (simple because it only has spreadsheet,
wordprocessor and presentations) but is becoming very popular, specially in
the enterprise, since it runs everywhere, including iOS (iPhones & iPads)
and Android phones and tablets.

The name of this Office Suite is: Thinkfree

It would be great if there was a simple version of LO with only these three
apps and that would run under Android & iOS.

Cheers!
