[IxDA Discuss] Empty search query: what result?

2008-06-16 Thread Liou Yamane
Hi there,

I have encountered the following problem several times at my current job as a
IxD-er without finding a satisfying solution:
What to do when a search is executed with no input, thus an empty search
query? Concretely, this means hitting the search button next to an empty text
field.

I am doubting whether this should show all results, especially if you have some
filters (think of genre for music for example), or no results at all. In the
latter case, an extra return all results button or something of the kind
could be used. Somehow, giving all results with an empty box seems
counter-intuitive.

On the other hand, a colleague programmer said the criterium would be how big
the set of possible results is. In the case of Google, there is no sense in
showing all results. In a more finite database of a specific website, this
would have more sense. But now, I am looking at the article search of the NY
Times, and it also shows all results, even if those are about 2,5M!
http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?srchst=

Thanks,
Liou Yamane

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Setting a usability lab on a budget

2008-06-16 Thread Todd Zaki Warfel
We use an Intel iMac w/a built in camera. To record, we use SnapZ Pro
($69) to record the video and iChat to capture the participant's face.
OS X has built in screen sharing now, so if the participant is on OS
X, we put them on OS X and stream to another machine using remoting.
If they're on Windows, we fire up Parallels, run Windows and the built
in screen sharing in OS X still works to stream to the other machine.

This is not only an inexpensive model, but allows us to reliably test
both Mac and Windows participants.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Which is a better Navigation Structure

2008-06-16 Thread Rony Philip
Hi All,

Thanks for the amazing feedbacks. Yes, I totaly agree that having only one
approach is absolute no no or rather stupid!. Having three basic navigation
(Category, Search and lastly Alphabeticaly) is the more user friendly.

Cheers,
Rony

Which navigational approach is most suited?

 1. Alphabetical Navigation: A primary navigation that simply displays all
the alphabets. When user hovers the mouse on any alphabet, all the items
related to that particular alphabet is displayed.

 2. Categorized Navigation: Group items under different categories (tab
navigation) like - Electronics, Furniture, Technology, Supplies, etc.

First, I just thought I'd take advantage of this opportunity to remind us
of Jared's favorite (and mine) example of a categorized catalog navigation:
   http://www.mcmaster.com/

Second, I find it hard to imagine any practical utility whatsoever for an
alphabetically-organized navigation for a product catalog, except perhaps if
the list of stuff is entirely visible in one screen so the user can find
their selection (which seems unlikely, unless your inventory is pretty
 small).

Any item I can think of in the office-supply world seems likely to have a
dozen different names and may appear under a dozen different letters of the
alphabet depending on the idiosyncrasies of the company (more likely several
companies) responsible for classifying and naming the products (Ink, Printer
Ink, Laser Printer Ink, Color Ink, Cartridges, Replacement Ink, Refills,
Accessories for Printers, etc.). Leah's thesaurus suggestion is good, but
you may end up laboring over that thesaurus for a great many moons, and may
 need to update it frequently.

IMHO, alphabetization only works if the subject matter has little to no
alternate possible naming. If every item in your index has one, two, three
or more alternate names, your labor increases by that same factor, probably
 more.

 Cheers

In this case we land users on the search results page with the

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Empty search query: what result?

2008-06-16 Thread Dante Murphy
It depends on the context of use, and, as your programmer friend
mentioned, the number of results (or complexity and time used in getting
the results). Many workflow systems use the null search to display all
possible cases, very helpful when you have no idea what you are supposed
to put on your expense report for ISN Department. Seriously, what the
heck does that MEAN?

I don't like that the button is labeled search when I haven't put in a
query string, but otherwise I would never be able to submit an expense
report without this feature. However, for any system where I can be
reasonably expected to know something about what I am searching for,
like Google or iTunes or Netflix, I agree with Wil that the null case
should be disallowed programmatically.

[IxDA Discuss] where have the Windows Mobile guidelines gone?

We're trying to brush up on the windows mobile design guidelines, but
the documentation in MSDN isn't helping us any. It used to have good

two. I didn't find anything on microsoft.com/design, either.

Does anybody have a link with fully functional content?

[IxDA Discuss] [Event] Waterloo IxDA: Design Garage, June 19/08

2008-06-16 Thread Robert Barlow-Busch

June 19, 2008
5:00 to 6:30 pm
Accelerator Centre
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

DESIGN GARAGE

In this, the Waterloo IxDA's last get-together of the 2007-2008 season,
we¹re wrapping up with an interactive, entertaining, and (gasp!) even
educational event. Working together in small groups, we¹ll tackle two design
challenges: one at a strategic level, designing the concept for a product or
business idea; and one at a tactical level, designing the form and behavior
of a concrete product.

We¹ll have some fun with this, as the design challenges will be quite unlike
anything we face in day-to-day work (they¹re remaining a secret until the
19th, so nobody gets a head-start!). At the end of each challenge, we¹ll
present our solutions to each other for a brief critique -- and in the
process will learn some new ideas about how to tackle design problems, even
the ones we *do* face day-to-day.

Everyone is welcome to participate! Please don¹t feel you need to be a
superstar designer -- or for that matter, a designer at all. With only 20
minutes for each design challenge, all you¹ll need is some imagination, a
willingness to encourage each other¹s ideas, and a desire to learn and have
fun.

taking it down soon and releasing a new _improved_ version in private
beta shortly. That being said you can definitely test the current
version and put the JavaScript on your site to test it out. The
JavaScript is very small and is hosted on Amazon S3 so you shouldn't
experience any noticeable impact on site performance, to ensure this
though you can also place the JavaScript include at the bottom of your
HTML page so it will load after the rest of the page.

If you're interested in getting in on the early list just let me know!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Which is a better Navigation Structure

2008-06-16 Thread Leah Buley

Poor little alphabet. Gets no respect.

Ok, so maybe a full blown thesaurus is overkill for an office supply
site. But you can't convince me that alphabetical order is
obsolete. Seth makes some interesting suggestions for newer ways
that we can organize information, but I don't think it has to be
either/or. There will always be situations where an alphabetical list
simply makes sense, and even when you have non-standard organization
schemes, odds are good you're using some form of alphabetization
within them.

The truth is, I don't actually care this much about the alphabet. I
swear.

But I think sometimes we're overeager to abandon established,
effective methods in favor of something that seems new, simply because
the technology makes it possible. I like Will's point about hybrid
solutions -- including top down taxonomies and bottom up facets, and,
yes, even a little good old fashioned alphabetization.

Here's a specimen where both alphabet and categories are used. As a
user of this site, I rely on both.

[IxDA Discuss] Is blogging about work OK?

2008-06-16 Thread Prachi Sakhardande
Hi There

Here's a question to all the avid bloggers on this list.

How do you draw the line between what work related stuff you can blog
about? Since most of us do interaction design at work, and talk about the
same one way or the other in our blogs, where do you draw the line?

Is it OK to share exciting details of how they brainstormed about a
particular problem, or a simple usability tweak in that took a solution from
usable to delightful? Do you discuss 'whats permissible' with your employer
at any point?

Would love to know your thoughts and experiences

Thanks
