[IxDA Discuss] Touchscreen keyboard research?

2008-11-06 Thread Billie Mandel
Question 2 of the evening: has anyone done any comparative user research yet on
different layouts for touchscreen keyboards on mobile phones? I'm just not
convinced that the metaphor translates for a QWERTY keyboard on a one-hand
device with no actual buttons. Will probably do said research myself if none of
you lovely people has taken it on yet. Thoughts?

Cheers,
- Billie

Re: [IxDA Discuss] In the Event of My Death

2008-11-06 Thread brandon applefield
What's crazy is that all of us who have posted her have had put some
previous thought into this idea, but a true solution is yet to be
seen. I think a major drawback to a system like this is the variable
use of different web services, including social networks, blogs,...

An ultimate solution to me would include the use of the OpenID
concept. Where there is one central entry location to the web, that
will allow the system to automatically archive your web activity and
footprint, in a sense a web scrapbook, with an emphasis on managing
accounts from all different web services.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Where can I get Flash maps of US, including counties/districts?

2008-11-06 Thread Truitt, Marc, ITS
You might want to look into Elixir from Ilog, if you are doing Flex or
AIR development, it is a nice product and you can use your own maps
(ESRI shape files), depending on your goals you can display Google maps
in Flash.

Mapping resources we use

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Kohl's Checkout

2008-11-06 Thread Caroline Jarrett
Marty DeAngelo

I agree - I think that the 'high-contrast version' is actually MUCH harder
to read than the original version. Not only is 'black-on-white' thought to
be one of the optimum styles for reading (so, 'high-contrast' seems a
misnomer) but studies have shown that a variation of light gray is easiest
to read on a black background.

Hi Marty

There's a difference between what studies show, and what individuals need.

Most people with visual impairments do in fact read to some extent, and
prefer to read if they can. Their requirements for reading may be very
different from the rest of us. For example, some people can read more easily
with white-on-black than the other way around.

An example: I worked with a colleague who was both colour-blind and suffered
from migraines. He chose a colour scheme for his desktop that I found quite
sick-making, but was comfortable for him.

The ideal is to provide a 'display options' that allows the knowledgeable
user to tune up the CSS to their own requirements. For example, try
www.bbc.co.uk which has 'Display Options' in the top left corner - or go
directly to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/displayoptions/index.shtml?url=www.bbc.co.uk/

I'm still struggling with how to provide displays that are easily tuned for
the less knowledgeable user who doesn't spot the 'display options' link. But
maybe people will get used to looking for it.

Having said all that, it's still possible to come up with downright ugly and
unusable versions ... a typical mistake is failing to adjust the button/menu
text at the same time as everything else.

Best
Caroline Jarrett

[IxDA Discuss] Error messages for edit-in-place forms

2008-11-06 Thread Rachel
I'm working on an Ajax app that will have edit-in-place forms (a.k.a. inline
editing). Page has read-only data; parts of the data are editable. User
chooses to edit a part; that part turns into an editable form. When user
saves changes, the form converts back to read-only data (this happens
without a page reload).

The fields in the forms are required. So if user leaves any blank, they need
to be challenged, and we need to let them know which fields are in question.
What's the best way to handle this?

We are reluctant to show an error message right above the form, because it
will push the form other content on the page downward, creating a visual
jumping effect. (unless we overlay the error message over top of other
content on the page)

What are best practices for this? Good examples?

Thanks,
Rachel

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Regional user testing techniques

2008-11-06 Thread Renee Rosen-Wakeford
Hi Gurmit,

If you're not already familiar with theories of cultural factors/dimensions
such as Hofstede or Hall, then my recommendation is to read up on them a bit
before reading specific advice on usability testing, since most of the
literature on the subject is based on them. Here are some good links:

Hofstede's site: http://www.geert-hofstede.com/
de Mooij's site - she's taken Hofstede's dimensions and analysed how they
affect consumer behaviour: http://www.mariekedemooij.com/
Summary of Hall's cultural factors:
http://changingminds.org/explanations/culture/hall_culture.htm

The basic premise is that there are certain differences between cultures
(such as individualism vs collectivism or high-context vs low-context) and
that cultures can be compared/measured based on these differences. These
factors do not predict user behaviour, so you can't base design directly on
them (despite some people's claims to the contrary). They can, however, be
used to analyse and explain observed user behaviour, which means they can be
really good for analysing results of testing.

As for more practical considerations for cross-cultural testing, the
standard recommendation is to use local testers/facilitators due to cultural
differences, plus because of status issues in some countries. In
collectivist or high-context culture, the status of different users is much
more important than in individualist or low-context cultures.

Think aloud can be especially problematic in high-context cultures, since
the tester may be seen as higher status, and people are less likely to voice
criticism of them. I've read that for testing in these kinds of countries
(think it was Japan, but I'm not 100% at the moment), it can work better for
the user to be asked what they think others will think of about the system
being tested as opposed to asking what they themselves think.

There are some academics doing research into the whole area of effective
cross-cultural testing here: http://culturalusability.cbs.dk/

I think some of their publications are on the web.

Sorry for the more theoretical nature of this post, but I think it's good to
have a solid theoretical approach before going into developing a test plan.
I've worked on the design and development of sites with localised versions,
but I haven't conducted tests across them, though I have built prototypes to
be used in tests conducted in multiple countries. I also did my MSc project
on the cross-culture uses of social networking services.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you want more clarification or details
on what I wrote.

Renée

I would encourage you to look at the work that Lynn Miller (and other

articulated a good framework for bringing Agile methods and UX methods
together.

My quick google turned up this deck:

...but Lynn also has papers on this in the ACM Portal/Archive that

My guess is that a company like Agile with 1Password are in the best
position to implement this. I'm less certain about OpenID, which
whilst it feels like a great idea, just isn't really catching on
fast enough (maybe Google will help). You want a service to which all
your logins and passwords and other details are synced so that the
executor can just open them all up. Not just online stuff, but all
those crossover things like bank PINs, etc.

[IxDA Discuss] Axure RP Design Library v1.0 released!

2008-11-06 Thread Ian Fenn
Hi,

Apologies for the cross-posting, but...

Axure RP Design Library v1.0 has been released.

AXLIB is is an open source project to create a robust design library of
common interaction patterns for use with the prototyping tool Axure RP.

You can download our first release from here:

http://code.google.com/p/axlib/downloads/list

Unzip and then open/import as you would any Axure RP project file.

Luke and I, the two currently leading the project, have tried hard to
provide a number of patterns that people will find useful, but this release
has also been about creating a framework which will accommodate the work of
the others with full credit.

You can sign up for ongoing news and discussion related to the project here:

http://groups.google.com/group/axlib

Luke and I look forward to your feedback - and future contributions.

All the best,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Error messages for edit-in-place forms

2008-11-06 Thread Jim Drew
I have seen cases where a space is allotted for where an error message
will go if it occurs. Designed well, users with no error never notice
that the space is there, it just integrates into the design. (I've
also seen this done poorly, of course where there's a big obvious
blank space.)

I'm working on an Ajax app that will have edit-in-place forms
(a.k.a. inline
editing). Page has read-only data; parts of the data are editable.
User
chooses to edit a part; that part turns into an editable form. When
user

saves changes, the form converts back to read-only data (this happens
without a page reload).

The fields in the forms are required. So if user leaves any blank,
they need
to be challenged, and we need to let them know which fields are in
question.

What's the best way to handle this?

We are reluctant to show an error message right above the form,
because it
will push the form other content on the page downward, creating a
visual
jumping effect. (unless we overlay the error message over top of
other

content on the page)

What are best practices for this? Good examples?

Thanks,
Rachel

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Agile UXD

2008-11-06 Thread Elizabeth Bacon
I've been considering the issue of Agile IxD for awhile now, and I
recently had a really great project experience integrating my design
process with an Agile XP team. Some quick takeaways:

* as you suggest, Jessica, defining the interaction design framework
(or overall IA structure or whatever you want to call it) in sprint
0, before release planning happens in full, is essential. Doing so
focuses the entire team on the big picture of the user experience and
lets people agree on the right set of functionality during release
planning. Knowing what product you're aiming towards allows features
to be prioritized and chunked so that the development team can deliver
a working system with real value at the end of each iteration.
* spend the time up-front to document what you know about your target
user(s) so that everyone on the team has a shared understanding;
personas are a great way to humanize users and communicate about them
in natural ways
* even better, of course, is to spend the time up-front to research
your users so that you truly can make user-centered decisions for
their benefit!
* a scenario-based approach to design integrates well with Agile's
use of story cards, keeping the team speaking the language of users'
needs and tying design decisions closely in with the implementation
process
* the IxD (UX, IA, whatever) person represents the customer
throughout development; they should participate in release planning,
iteration planning, stand-up meetings, and especially acceptance
testing during the entire project.

These are just a few quick points but I hope they help. :)

Cheers,
Liz

[IxDA Discuss] Yahoo Problem

2008-11-06 Thread Alethea Woo
I fail to use Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Email simultaneously. The problem may
due to that I can chat via Yahoo Email as a simplified version of Yahoo
Messenger.

The scenario is as below:

I was chatting in Yahoo Messenger, which suddenly gave a reminder that Yahoo
Email received a new letter. Then I start Yahoo Email so as to check that new
letter. As a result of this behavior, Yahoo Messenger shut down immediately.
Only after I close Yahoo Email, can I start Yahoo Messenger to continue
chatting.

Anyone can solve this problem?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Yahoo Problem

2008-11-06 Thread Aadesh Mistry
This may be because of the fact that when you login to Yahoo! Mail, you
also automatically login to the Messenger service included within Yahoo!
mail.

What you can do is login in again to your Yahoo! Messenger. Once you
login using your messenger, it will auto close your web messenger
session. But you will still be logged in to Yahoo! Mail.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
