[IxDA Discuss] Golden oldies: pre-web-era book recommendations

2009-10-18 Thread Murray Thompson
We have a lot of great communication and design-related books
published in last 15 years, but there are others from 30+ years ago
whose content still rings true. Sometimes they may speak even more
loudly than when they were first published and remind us that many
concepts we're exploring today aren't always so new after all.

Some like those from Marshall McLuhan, Edward de Bono, and
Christopher Alexander are still talked about and mentioned once and a
while. But I haven't seen these books I've been reading mentioned:

'Design With Type' by Carl Dair (from 1967)
Discussion on the printed word from letter to word to sentence to
block and to page, history of type and more...

'Design for the Real World' by Victor Papanek (from 1971)
Ethics for design, including ecological and sustainability
principles

Anyone else know of some pre-web-era books related to communication,
design, and design-thinking that might deserve a fresh look from
people today?

Interesting you listed Full Sail. I'm curious what people's thoughts are on

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Persona Workshops

2009-10-18 Thread William Hudson
I've just been on Adlin and Pruit's personas course at NNG Usability
Week (while I was teaching a couple of courses there). Their book (The
Persona Lifecycle) is much more than just personas - it's a technique
for user-centred design based on personas. So it depends on what you
need. If it is just how to create personas, there are lots of useful
references (including several good web pages on the subject). But if you
want to know what to do with them after you've got them, I would not
hesitate to recommend Adlin and Pruit.

FWIW, I would definitely recommend Mulder's book over Adlin's. They
are both useful, but if you only have time for one, the former is
shorter and more specific and to the point.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Tactile and haptic informations from online platforms to deaf users

2009-10-18 Thread Rajdeep Gill
The Tactile Graphics Assistant (TGA) is a program created at the
University of Washington to aid in the tactile image translation
process. The TGA separates text from an image so that the text can
later be replaced by Braille and inserted back onto the image. In
order to streamline the text selection process, the TGA employs
machine learning to recognize text so that large groups (possibly
hundreds) of images can be translated at a time.

2009-10-18 Thread dave malouf
If money is biggest concern, Umea and Malmo are great programs and I
would add CIID to the bunch as well.

No one can tell you which program you should go to. All 3 are
excellent. You need to look inside yourself and find out what you
want. Each are very different and all will more than prepare you for
"web design".

But if Web design is what you are looking for, then maybe different
programs would be better. Ones that are more about "new media" or
"interactive design" might be better. Some of interest (not
necessarily cheap) are SCAD's Interactive Design, Simon Fraser
University, the new program in Boulder looks interesting, And in
Stockholm there is another interactive program, and in the US back
again there is Full Sail. In fact, in the "interactive" or
"digital" design arenas there are a host of programs.

Most "interaction design" programs are usually way more than just
web design.

But even once you settle on a direction, you should really learn and
understand the philosophies of each program. It does make a
difference.

Anyway, lots to always think about.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Forms: Asking for email first during registration?

2009-10-18 Thread Eduardo Ortiz
Jennifer,

I think that it comes down to appropriate segmenting of the items presented
in the form and the type of registration that is being filled out, a
utility/bank registration area will have multiple fields where e-mail might
be required but a contact number is optional.

Check out Chris Messina's screenshots of sign-up forms for more
clarification on your concern:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/factoryjoe/sets/72157609745241966/

In my experience, and what I do day to day, I segment content by it's type
(contact information, personal data, log-in information, etc) and I clarify
the fields that are required vs the ones that are optional, I do not assume
the * tells the whole story, nor do I rely on it. Luke W's book on form
design is fascinating for this http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/books/webforms/

Cheers,
E

Re: [IxDA Discuss] To spec or not to spec?

2009-10-18 Thread Bob
I think a more appropriate question is, "what sort of spec to you use
for a given audience?" Different stakeholders can prefer their specs
to be delivered in different formats (not that they always get to
have it their way, of course).

Some might like specs in the form of wireframes for easy lo-fi
visualization, some might like large printed documents for legal or
contractual reasons, some might like pseudocode (or skeleton code),
and some might think anything but working program is an unecessary
waste-of-effort. The problem comes when you try to please them all
with a single format. One size does not fit all (very well).

I think Siegy's assertions would be better stated in a less absolute
format.

1) Specs _can_ help a developer, but they can also confound them if
not written correctly.

2) It _can_ be easier to update a spec than to rewrite code, but it
can also be easier to rewrite the code than it is to update the
spec.

3) Specs _can_ serve as a starting point but they can also get out of
date and do more harm than good if not cared for throughout the
project.

The trick is to know what works best for the project you're working
on and the environment in which you're working.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] To spec or not to spec?

2009-10-18 Thread Joe Hsia
functional specs are important to all stakeholders. i can't imagine
a ux/interaction designer not provide functional specs with a
finished wireframe.

Especially if you are not the actual front-end developer, functional
specs is the communication medium between the designer, prototyper,
engineers, and QA.

Without it, everyone will interpret the interactions, scenarios in
different ways.

I think the better question is when to provide functional specs. If
you are just doing concept designs/sketches, I think it's better to
keep it high-level and allow stakeholders to review the design
without specs so the use cases are open to interpretation.

However, once you start to work on a UI design/wireframe where it
will resembles the finish product, you should also spec it out so
engineers/prototypers can develop the application based on the spec
and the design, and QA can use the spec to test scenarios and use
cases.

If this is your undergrad, it doesn't matter where you go.
Get involved in your local IxDA group.
Ask to intern with a local agency that you admire.
