2009-11-16 Thread Paul Sherman
Just giving back a bit... Dru asked for a recommendation for a
readable resource about attitude measurement, scaling, etc.

I went back to my stats and survey research research but most of them
seemed either too dry, too statistics-heavy, or both.

I did find one book with a straightforward and concise description of
attitude measurement, questionnaire design and scaling. The relevant
section is Chapter 5.

You could try representing the architecture as wireframes then
illustrate the logic of the different user journeys based on the

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Representing visually the reasoning behind the sitemap.

2009-11-16 Thread Mathew Sanders
I'm assuming that the audience for the presentation are not familiar
with a standard site-map deliverable, and I'm guessing that they are
not looking for a blow-by-blow account of the entire rationale you
have chosen, but instead looking for some confidence in the decisions
that you have made.

Maybe what would help would be to create a presentation that
illustrates some of the significant changes in patterns that have
been made with the new site map.

Look for differences between the old site map, and the new site map
and think of ways to visually communicate this using metaphor,
analogy or diagram.

Perhaps first level labeling has been changed from obscure technical
language to more simple easy to understand language.

Perhaps the categories have been organized so that at each step there
are fewer decisions to make whereas before there were many.

Perhaps the depth of the website has been decreased, so that from the
homepage people reach content with fewer steps than before.

Look for patterns on what has changed, make sure you understand why
the changes have happened, and brainstorm ideas how you might
communicate this.

Pretty vague advice, but hope it helps a little.

I was wondering though if there is a more applied chapter in some
usability book. Or a journalist's guide for that matter. Where for
example the structured/semi-structured/open questioning style is
explained. I'll dig into it.

Great summary . Thanks Tom for sharing. Steepster seems to have
figured out a way to avoid the predictable final resting place of
something between 4.-4.5 (4.3). I am passing the site on to our UX
Designers and the business owners within our company. It's nice to
see something new/fresh.

Looks like this rate it topic could turn into a book for one of you
UX brainiacs :-). Given that it seems every social networking site
and e-com site seem to be moving in the direction of rate it,
sure would be nice if we had some stats to back up it up. I wonder if
anyone has done a usability test to determine if users even like being
offered the chance to rate/rank.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Site map, reasoning and how to present it.

2009-11-16 Thread Jim Brennsteiner
I derive a site's structure from the organization of the use cases
for that site.

First, I create the use cases, they can be name only (i.e., Consumer
adds item to shopping cart).

Then, I collect similar use cases into functional packages (or
folders). These functional packages then translate into the structure
of the site. I can then use the Use Case List to show why I structured
a site a certain way.

hope this helps.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Should tab order always strictly follow visual order?

2009-11-16 Thread Jim Drew
From: Alan Wexelblat awexelb...@gmail.com

What I'd like to do is have TAB move the user from A-B but then from
B-F, skipping the defaulted fields. I know this is going to
inconvenience that 10% of users who want to change the default, but
the alternative seems to be inconveniencing the 90% who have to hit
TAB four times to get to the next field they care about.

First, remember that (assuming a completely general audience) many people have
no concept at all that tab does move between fields. They do all form filling
by click-type-click-type.

For that fragment that does use tab:

* If you use tab to more through all the fields, yes, the 90% who don't need to
change those fields save three key presses.

* If they did have to tab through those fields, though, they don't have to
reacquire the tab key. They just pressed it, so they can just press it again
with minimal time/effort cost.

* If tab skips those fields, and they are users who expect tab to hit all the
fields, are they going to think Cool, they skipped over the fields I didn't
want to use? Or will they think Crap, where did the focus go? Oh, down
there. If I press tab again, will it go to the next field, or will it jump
back up, or maybe go God knows where? (That is, if you violate the
standard, people who are used to the standard may not trust you to adhere to
it anywhere.)

* For that 10% of users who *do* need the fields, if tab skips them, what to
they have to do? Click in the field. And thus again, the message you've sent
to users who expect standards adherence is that they can't trust that you will
anywhere, that they are going to have to expect to manually click potentially
at any time in using your app.

In the end, in the name of saving three button presses for many users, you have
made things far more difficult for a small portion of the users and told every
one of your users who care about standards that you don't.

(You've also annoyed the spit out of your QA team, because they asked about
this and you've told them to their face that they can't plan on tab order
anywhere in the product. And if it's broken anywhere else, they have to ask
twice to know if it's really broken or if you were just saving a button press
or two.)

A better solution may be to redesign your form. Put the defaulted fields at
the end if possible. Those who want to avoid button presses can just click the
end button, or they can tab through the fields even more quickly and reduce
their cognitive load.

-- Jim

[IxDA Discuss] Reminder :: Silicon Valley IxDA Event :: Persuasion for Designers :: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Yahoo!

2009-11-16 Thread Pabini Gabriel-Petit
Just a reminder, inviting you to join us at our next Silicon Valley
IxDA event! Kim Goodwin, author of Designing for the Digital Age, will
speak about Persuasion for Designers.

When: Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Socializing: 7:00-7:30 pm

Program: 7:30-9:30 pm

Where: Yahoo!
Room: Building E, Classrooms 9 10
700 First Avenue
Sunnyvale, CA 94089

Persuasion for Designers
Kim Goodwin
There's a myth that great design is self-evident. The truth is that
it's not often as easy as it sounds. Sooner or later, every designer
gets frustrated when a shortage of time and resources—or an excess of
politics—keeps your great solution from seeing the light of day. How
do you prevent it? How do you change course if it looks like things
are headed that direction? Kim Goodwin, author of Designing for the
Digital Age, will share some techniques and encourage discussion of
your own experiences.

Kim Goodwin is the author of Designing for the Digital Age, a
comprehensive new book on designing digital products and services. In
the course of her career, Kim has been an in-house and freelance
designer, in-house creative director, and VP Design at Cooper, leading
a practice of interaction, visual, and industrial designers. Kim has
led projects involving a tremendous range of design problems,
including Web sites, complex analytical and enterprise applications,
phones, medical devices, services, and even organizations. Her clients
and employers have included everything from one-man startups to the
world's largest companies, as well as universities and government
agencies. This range of experience and a passion for teaching have led
to Kim's popularity as an author and as a speaker at conferences and
companies around the world.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Good books or resources for interview techniques

2009-11-16 Thread Kate Walser
Hi Liou,

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In is
invaluable when it comes to asking questions in a way that helps you
discover what you don't know to ask about and understand more about
the interviewee to ask relevant questions.

It's not an IXD/UXD focused book, but I recommend it to anyone new
to the IXD profession as it helps you learn how to more effectively
communicate with anyone, and especially in situations where you need
to ask objective, open questions in a non-leading way that puts the
interviewee at ease.

Available on Amazon or most local bookstores...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0140157352?ie=UTF8tag=katwal-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=390957creativeASIN=0140157352

It's also very handy when you have interviewees who are not
talkative or who are combative/defensive. It's useful beyond
interviewing and will help you in project negotiations, tense
customer situations, and even at home with family, friends, and
children.

Good luck!
Kate

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Rating vs Like

2009-11-16 Thread Holger Rothemund
Very interesting discussion. However, I personally prefer uneven
scales, because I think that users do know what 3 on a 5-Point scale
means: not bad, but not good either. Why should I force them to
either a positive or a negative decision?

On the other hand you should offer a don't know option as well,
for those who just don't want or can't rate the item. We made and
still do make good experiences with those ratings and benchmarking
studies do show that respondents can easily cope with the neutral
option.

And if you think about it: sometimes there is just that odd item,
that you don't consider positive nor negative. If there would be an
even scale, you would be forced into a decision that you can't make.
Whatever you answer, it is basically wrong. On a scale with many
options this might be not so bad, but on a scale of 4, this can have
a huge impact on results (mean, top-boxes, etc.).

Some researchers are concerned that the respondents use the center of
the scale too often, because it is easier, but from my experience
that isn't the case. Most respondents do have an opinion, and if it
is good or bad, they will tell you.

However, as a company you should know how you want to treat those
neutral responses. I personally recommend to mentally move them
towards the negative responses. Because even if the respondent
doesn't consider the item negative, the companies intention should
be to move all the responses towards the positive side of the scale
over time by actions to improve quality, etc.

@Paul: As my experience from research practice is quite opposite to
what you were writing I would like to get some more background
information about this. Do you have any scientific articles about
this? Would be interesting, because this can also depend very much on
the issues that should be rated.

[IxDA Discuss] Interaction Design or HCI higher studies

2009-11-16 Thread jackz
Hello,

I intend to pursue a Masters Degree in Interaction Design or HCI from
US or Canada (MDes or MS).

I am about to finish my Graduate studies in Computer Science (MS in
CS) with a GPA of 3.1 (including one really low grade). I have some
pretty strong project work that can cover-up the GPA deficiency to
some extent. Also I have taken courses like Virtual Reality and User
Interface Design.

Given this background, is it wise to even try for higher studies in
interaction design or HCI?

If yes, how do I go about it because the best Universities like CMU
and/or GeorgiaTech are out of question? What about the funding
scenario?

[IxDA Discuss] Mini Design Challenge Suggestions

2009-11-16 Thread Laura Rodrian
Hi,

Does anyone have suggestions of topics for quick (~10 minutes) design
challenge scenarios?

The University of Michigan SOCHI (Student Org. in Computer Human
Interaction) is hosting an event to practice our rapid sketching and
ideation skills, particularly in preparation for upcoming job
interviews that many of us have. We've done sketching scenarios like
this in the past and would love some fresh ideas.

Are there any scenarios that you've encountered during IXD/UX
interviews that might be good to practice with?

We are also compiling a tips for successful IXD interviews
document and would love to include any advice that you might have.

Reply to this post, or send an email to sochi-officers [at] umich

Thanks,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Good books or resources for interview techniques

2009-11-16 Thread Sean Phelan
I think this is a really important part of usability interviewing that
is not given enough focus. The technique I woudl recommend is
actually from job interviews called behavioural interviewing.

Behavioral interviewing is a style of interviewing that was
developed in the 1970's by industrial psychologists. Behavioral
interviewing asserts that the most accurate predictor of future
performance is past performance in a similar situation.

You will find some information on HR sites and anything about
recruiting.

Sorry don't have time to dig out the specific articles.

[IxDA Discuss] Prototyping Tool Recommendations

2009-11-16 Thread Chris Rink
Hello, i have recently been given the task of identifying prototyping
tools to test high fidelity and high functionality. Our goal is to
have prototypes that will be high enough quality to work as design
specs.

I have looked at Axure and iRise but am unsure about their ability to
handle interactions like resizing and Drag n Drop.

Has anyone used found a tool that handles those dynamic aspects well?
Am I just better off using a javascript library?

[IxDA Discuss] Inline audio and text translations

2009-11-16 Thread Todd Holmberg
Hello, everyone. Thanks for the constant stream of useful information.
I've lurked and learned from this list for a while. It's great.

Has anyone seen/built an interface for presenting inline audio
translations of journal or magazine articles? A customer would like
to include translations for small blocks of an article. The blocks
will be of an arbitrary length. Each block would have a corresponding
Spanish and Chinese translation of the original English text. Their
idea is to include an icon at the end of each block that will play an
audio translation of that block. I suggested that maybe a full-article
translation is all that is necessary, but they think of the audio as
translation helper for non-English speaker.

Any pointers or suggestions aould be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd
