Re: [IxDA Discuss] Sorting buttons... left-to-right, top-to-bottom

2010-02-01 Thread L . Javier Gala
I was thinking the left-to-right would feel more natural,
specially if there is any scroll involved (it would be quite
uncomfortable having to scroll visually from top to bottom and then
again if you did not found what you looked for)... but I was thinking
about looking for visual labels.

But then, if you are going to use just text it is much more simple to
scan directly downwards looking for the 1st different letters of the
label.

Another point would be that you should clearly mark the boundaries
between letters, both in the tabs and in the proper context.

Hope this helps.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] TV production room interaction design?

2010-02-01 Thread Ryan Fernandez
I've designed interfaces for television. Some general guidelines for
10-ft UI design...

COLOR:
On a TV screen, reversed out type against a dark background is much
easier to read than dark type against a light background. Light
backgrounds are very bright and make it more difficult to read text.
Darker color backgrounds are more soothing and allow for
light-colored text to easily be read.

CONTRAST:
Content shouldn't blend into the background. You want high contrast,
but not enough so that the colors actually vibrate. A good way to test
for contrast is to add an adjustment layer that toggles between BW
and color in your Photoshop file. You want to avoid muddy grey
colors. Also, check your work on several different TV screens if
possible. No two televisions are calibrated the same, so having
paying attention to color contrast is more important to paying
attention to actual colors.

FONT SIZE:
Whether you're designing for standard definition or HD, the size of
text needs to occupy a certain percentage of the screen. So, while
18pt may be perfectly legible in a standard definition interface, a
font at the same size in a 720p UI actually feels 50% smaller because
it's text characters are occupying less vertical screen real estate.
In my experience, I've found that text looks best when it occupies
the following percentages of vertical real estate...

Screen Titles: 7%
Primary Text: 4.5%
Secondary Text: 3%

Take your target resolution, apply the percentage values, and that's
the height in pixels that your font should be.

Just like any other form of media, when you're setting type you want
to create a visual hierarchy between the different types of elements
on the screen. This improves scanability, which is important when
viewing from a distance.

FONT FACE:
Choose a sans-serif (serifs add noise). If space is tight, try using
a condensed font. Bold for titles, medium for body copy. Some
typefaces I'd recommend on television for their legibility...

- Helvetica Neue 57 77 Condensed
- Franklin Gothic Book Bold Condensed
- Interstate Regular Bold Condensed

ACTION TITLE/SAFE:
It's a myth that these don't exist on HD displays. In standard
resolution, you'd err on the side of caution and go with something
like 90% of the screen real estate as your action safe area, then 95%
of your action safe area is your title safe region. With HD you can be
less cautious and go with something like 95/95. It's just good
practice to force yourself not to have content bleeding off the
screen...

[IxDA Discuss] Describing search to developers

2010-02-01 Thread diana aspillera
Hi everyone,

I work very closely with engineers/developers. I wrote a functional
specification and made a series of wireframes for an application
we're developeing. Its basically a search tool.

We have a prototype up with a test DB and I am realizing that the
keyword search needs further explanation because its not working
quite right.

So far, to make them understand what should happen, I've just made a
list of possible search terms with results that users would expect.

I'm wondering if anyone has discovered a more effective way to
communicate with the engineers how a search should work from the
user's perspective?

I look forward to hearing what other's might have done in a similar
situation!
Thanks!

[IxDA Discuss] Smart-HDL: Smart Home

2010-02-01 Thread smartbus
Is the term “ smart home “ only applies to those who can pay for
it? As the word “ smart home “ always incorporates to the luxury
residential projects.

The smart home have become a reality of the future and not just for
the peculiar and wealthy. Nevertheless, it is not the word that we
really are concern with. We need a bit of common sense or let us
think logical, let us think smart.

Smart people do pay more attention to its function and application.
Functions that they do require to make their life easy, as their
smart home takes care of things for them automatically.

Smart home in other terms can be defined as an enhanced living
lifestyle. In addition, as the cost of resources continues to rise
and the price of electronics continues to fall, home automation or so
a smart home will provide and prove to be even more cost effective.
This then has made life a lot more comfortable when equipped with a
smart home system.

After all these description of smart home, what does it really offers
us and its advantages in our homes?

There are various of intelligent gadgets that are available for your
home. A smart home these days become an increasingly essential
requirement and a common place home owners will benefit in.

A smart home controls all the functions in and out of the house from
a single point of management. Through the use of innovative
technology, home owners are able to turn their homes into
state-of-the-art machines that can be manipulated and monitored from
any part of the world and not just simply a statement of style and
luxury.

Smart home is a smart way of living.

If they are arranged alphabetically, I believe it is easier to scan
down a list of names instead of across because the first letterof
each name will be lined up, making it easier to see large blocks of
names you can skip over ( if looking for a particular letter).

However you do it you want to make sure that it either visually looks

And, you must make sure that the reading order is reflected in the

[IxDA Discuss] User Experience Design (UXD) course

2010-02-01 Thread Michele Marut
Looks like a good introductory UX course.

The Mini-Masters in User Experience Design (UXD) teaches design
software interfaces for users seeking to efficiently and effortlessly
complete their tasks. The program is an immersive experience that
shows how and where the User Experience Design (UXD) fits in the
software process. It explains the underlying psychology and sociology
that guides user design, and demonstrates common techniques for making
an interface usable.

This course provides a solid foundation that enables participants to
deliver tangible business results including:
• Reduced development costs through early detection of usability
problems, missing requirements, inefficient procedures and
unnecessary features
• Reduced costs in training, service, and support through more
efficient designs
• Increased user productivity and success rate through elimination of
usability problems that result in failed transactions

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Great looking jobs on this list

2010-02-01 Thread j. eric townsend

Something that surprised me about moving to PGH is my newfound awareness of:

- elder-care issues, from transportation and safe driving to in-home
services/care.

- ADA in general. omfg, stairs are *everywhere*. I cannot imagine being
in a chair or even on crutches in this town. Many of the elevators I've
been in were hopeless even with the ability to see clearly and move easily.

- signs and wayfinding. Welcome to a city where people give directions
based on business locations that closed or changed names years ago.
You'll spend your first year going I'm WHERE? All I did was miss one
exit. I think. Or maybe that was the exit and I was in the wrong lane.
I thought I was supposed to turn left where the Isley's used to be.

Personally, I'm looking forward to moving around and experiencing new
things -- good and bad -- than spending the rest of my life in the bay
area or NYC.

[IxDA Discuss] Regarding Table

2010-02-01 Thread gayatri
Hello Folks,

I am in an interesting situation with regards to table interaction. I
have some data that is presented in table format. The table has
Search, Sort on some columns, Number of results per page drop down
and Pagination. We do not have Show All rows as it takes a long
time for the page to load. We also have Delete functionality.

My Specific question is:

The question is if a user selects few rows on page 1 for deletion and
moves from page 1 to page 2 and subsequently page 3, should a user be
allowed to delete the rows selected on page 1 while they are in
page 3.
While a user has moved from Page 1 to Page 2 to 3 and so on, chances
are they selected few more rows on different pages and marked for
deletion.
Is it okay to allow them to delete rows selected across different
pages as they don't see what they have selected in previous pages?
Personally I am not comfortable allowing users to delete what they
cant see even though they marked it themselves as they can't see a
summary of selected items with the existing design. I would love to
get your thoughts!

P:S: We currently retain the selection across different pages and a
user can go back and forth between pages and can check or uncheck
their selection. We erase the selection after a user moves to
different application or the session times out.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Regarding Table

2010-02-01 Thread Will Hacker
Your concern about deleting something the user can't see is valid but
some testing of how people expect to interact with the feature is in
order. I would be interested to know if anyone has a design pattern
for this situation.

A few years back I worked with a similar problem in which the user
could select items in a shopping site's search results and add them
to a product comparison table or a shopping list. The results were
paged like Google search results and the question was when they
select compare or add to shopping list do we add all items or just
the ones on the current page. We decide to add the items to compare
or the list regardless of which page the user was on when they
selected the action.

Since your situation involves a delete function you want to probe
your users' expectations to make sure you get it right. If there are
similar sites to yours that have this feature you should look at them
to see how they handle to see what people's expectations may be,
assuming they also use or are familiar with those sites. I'm not a
fan of deleting things you are not looking at when you click the
delete button.

New places can reveal new (or old) problems. But that doesn't mean there are

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Regarding Table

2010-02-01 Thread Jack Moffett
Gayatri,

I suggest that you provide the user with the list of items that will be
deleted, perhaps in a confirmation dialog, before the action is carried out.
While this requires an extra step, it ensures that the user doesn't
accidentally and unknowingly lose data while still allowing the user the
convenience of selecting items across multiple pages.

Best,
Jack

Most people make the mistake of
thinking design is what it looks like…
People think it's this veneer—
that the designers are handed this box
and told, Make it look good!

That's not what we think design is.
It's not just what it looks like and feels like.
Design is how it works.

You could take the Google approach and reverse Jack's suggestion and present
the user with the opportunity to undo what they've done by clicking on a
simple and clear CTA.

Regarding deleting across different pages, you should test your solution
with your audience, understand their needs and how they behave with your
proposed solution.

My favorite desktop plug ins that aid productivity are:

1. Jumpcut (free) - clipboard history manager. Let's you cut, cut
cut, then switch applications and paste, paste, paste.

2. Plainclip (free) - tiny app that strips all formatting from the
clipboard item. Great in combination with the above.

3. Textexpander (free/donationware) - autocomplete your email
address, phone numbers, you-name-it by only typing a few characters.

[IxDA Discuss] Sketching before the Wireframes

2010-02-01 Thread Richard Carson
Hi Folks,

I wanted to ask around on the process of creating wireframes for designing
mobile applications. In creating these wireframes, should I work on paper
before actually hopping into a drawing program to lay out these wireframes? I
believe working on paper is faster and easier before laying out the wireframes
for a project. However, the company I am working with, might be wondering if I
am wasting my time. That I should be doing wireframes within the drawing
program. What are your suggestions and thoughts on this issue?

Hi

I would absolutely go with the sketches, much faster and easier to
knock out, experiment with etc. You'll save time later when moving
onto software and/or paper prototypes etc.
