Re: [IxDA Discuss] The NEW platform for IxDA!

2010-02-23 Thread Maria Cordell
We're all very excited and really looking forward to our new online home.

Thanks very much to Liz Bacon (yay!) and everyone else who has put
time into this! The new site is key to the growth of our practice and
IxDA local groups, and I look forward to migrating IxDA Atlanta to the
new platform.

Thanks!!

 Hey everybody, it’s launch time!

After a herculean effort by so many people, the new IxDA website will
launch. We hope to launch it either this weekend or next. Please be
sure to read the important steps you need to take to stay connected.

Code-named Conan, the new IxDA.org site contains features that take
the IxDA to a new level:

 * New spaces for local groups, including local events,
 discussions, and jobs
 * Enhanced discussion area featuring better threading, media
 sharing, searching, and syndication
 * Resources about interaction design
 * Job board for posting job positions and finding
 opportunities, including those at Coroflot
 * Membership directory that enables you to connect with
 mentors or protégés
 * Enhanced profile creation and control
 * Unified conference information

IxDA considers this new website to be global platform that furthers
our mission and offers great potential for future extensions
envisioned by our active community of practice.

As we launch this exciting site, we know there might be some
minor glitches and growing pains. Please be patient. We will be
channeling your feedback through Get Satisfaction, so stay tuned for
 that information.

 IMPORTANT STEPS
When the new site launches, we need existing members
to take a simple step to get access and continue your participation.
We need you to visit the new website in order to
 request a password.
 1. In the header of the new site, select Request password.
 2. Enter the email address associated with your IxDA Discussion
 subscription. The system
will generate a password and send it to you.
 3. To log in to the site, follow the link in the email you receive.
Then you should change your password to one that you want to use.
By following this process, your member profile will reflect all your
 previous activity at IxDA.org.

New members need to create a fresh account:
 1. In the header, select Become a member.
 2. Complete the member profile fields and submit the form.
 3. When you receive a confirmation email, just follow the process as
 it outlines.

 PROJECT BACKGROUND
Creating Conan took the work of this entire community. Not only did
you step in to contribute in June 2009 to support funding, but many
of you helped out by giving input and ideas.

Starting in 2007, the IxDA Board of Directors began discussing how to
create a new, extensible platform for the association. In the fall of
2008, then-VP Liz Bacon stepped up to lead the project as Creative
Director Project Manager. Along with Nasir Barday, the team worked
on refining a vision of what the site should do…and be.

That November, 26 IxDA members answered the public call for
participation. Managing a team this size was awesome and a bit
terrifying. From the end of 2008 until February 2009, the Conan team
surveyed the community about the existing ixda.org, and defined the
project goals. Liz then divided up the Conan team into feature teams.
The team created a release plan involving research, requirements
definition, design, RFP and development phases.

The spring and summer of 2009 saw evaluation of technical
options, with the team finally settling on Drupal as an
extensible, open-source CMS solution. In addition, the team
finalized the interaction design for the site. We want to thank
the 13 most active contributors who stayed engaged the whole way
through: Alok Nandy, Atul Thanvi, Chong Lee Khoo, Jason Pamental,
Jonathan Knoll, Rich Rogan, and most especially Neil Cadsawan, Maria
De Monte, Mayur Karnik, Shiva Reddy, Tonia Bartz, and Miek Dunbar.

From May to June 2009, we considered RFP responses from 13 leading
Drupal development companies. We conducted a community fundraiser to
support the Conan project, and raised about $15,000. This ultimately
covered about 25% of the development costs.

Last August, the Conan team shared design concepts with the IxDA
community. More than 80 people participated in the ConceptShare
review phase with great input: thank you’s to the 40 or so who
provided comments! We refined the site design significantly.

After a false start with one technology vendor, in October 2009 the
team turned to Growing Venture Solutions (GVS) with hope in our
hearts. We were always impressed by their commitment to Drupal and
their understanding of our requirements. At this
time, we also established another, broader team of IxDA
volunteers to review the development phase progress. As GVS completed
each 2-week sprint, we recorded the demo session and shared it with
 that team

2010-02-22 Thread Maria Cordell
Crate and Barrel (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/) does this as well.
As a consumer, I think it works well in a shopping context, and it
doesn't get in my way. I like the way they've implemented it, and it
feels elegant, but then again, I haven't bought anything that online
at CB; when I shop there it's always in store.

As a designer I have to wonder how many online shoppers get it, but it
seems the CB design is doing a reasonable job of providing cues for
what's happening when an item gets added to the cart, and they're
showing item thumbnails for what's been added. Would be interesting to
know if/how they tested the design.

additional context driven function there might be something there,
but the CEO here liked it so I'm doing my due diligence. I can't

BEYOND WIREFRAMES AND BEHAVIORS:
Public and Participatory Interaction Design

Socially responsible design has become a catch-phrase in the design

towards socially responsible ends such as advocacy, technology
literacy, and sustainability? When considering socially responsible
design, is there a possibility for interaction design to be about
something more than the useable and desirable, and can interaction
designers do more than create wireframes and specify behaviors? In
this presentation I'll draw from examples of recent work to
challenge us to consider how interaction design can be thought about
as a public and participatory practice, committed to social
engagement and change.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] What Other Fields Could UXers Steal From?

2009-09-30 Thread Maria Cordell
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Vicky.

I definitely think a bit of disciplinary cross-pollination of
ideas/concepts is worth exploring and exploiting. It's also a way to
keep from getting too wrapped up in our own stuff, and for getting
inspiration from other fields.

I'm thinking along similar lines, particularly as relates to
considering how time affects design, and how to think about and
account for it, in this presentation submission for Interaction 10:

touchscreen, so there's obviously no indent for your finger to know when
you're over a button. I mistyped many characters, sometimes more than once,
and got frustrated after a few minutes of fiddling with it.

Perhaps this is just me. I'm curious to know if others on this list have
successfully adapted to the Storm's unique touchscreen/button controls. Or
if anyone here helped test or develop it and would like to share something
of their experiences. Some million or so people have eagerly purchased this
handset; I'd like to know how it's worked out for you. Thanks,

 Michael Micheletti

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Site Map Design - Best Practices

2009-01-19 Thread Maria Cordell
When reviewing site analytics I see that site map pages get used, but
I don't know *why* people are using the page in most cases. I do know
(from direct questioning) that in some instances certain users report
going to the site map page because they're unable to find what they're
looking for by other means. A few people seem to prefer starting at
the site map (they just like seeing the list), but it appears that in
most cases people arrive at the site map as a last resort, when
aspects of the site design don't support finding what they need.

The latter is essentially the premise of the UIE article: The Site
Map: An Information Architecture Cop-Out. It makes many good points.
See:

http://www.uie.com/articles/email.php?article=Sitemap

On a related note, SEO companies I've dealt with always want a site
map and advocate for listing every single thing you can possibly
reference on the site, and then some. Most of the suggestions I've
seen from this camp are less than usable--designed for bot consumption
more than for consumption by humans. Would be interested in knowing
what others have seen in this area, and if there are successful
examples that are both SEO- and people-friendly.

 Hi!

Based on your experience, research or any usability study, do visitors of a

What are the best practices in designing a site map?

 Thanks in advance!

I also have Zotero, and I like it.

Google Notebook is another option: http://www.google.com/notebook/

Hi. I'm looking for a web-based research and writing tool to help me organize

Thomson-Reuters looks promising but I can't get a straight answer on
individual pricing (seems geared for site-wide licenses)so I'm assuming
 it's pricey.

What tools have you had good experience with? Thanks in advance.

[IxDA Discuss] Atlanta IA Semi-spontaneous Meetup Monday, 12/8 with special guest!

2008-12-06 Thread Maria Cordell
Come by the Cafe Intermezzo Buckhead/Brookwood location [1] Monday
night for a meetup with fellow IA/IxD/UX types and special guest Don
Turnbull [2] of the School of Information at the University of Texas,
Austin. I'll also say a few words about the status of our Atlanta IxDA group.

We'll start at 6 p.m. You can park across the street at the Macquarium
building (1800 Peachtree). As long as you leave after 7, there's no
cost for parking there.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Whistler Trip after IxDA

I'm very interested, but not necessarily for skiing, as I'm a lousy at
it. :) I'd attend primarily as a photographer and to enjoy the area.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
 In practice, they are not.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Monday. Ugh!

2008-02-11 Thread Maria Cordell
Ditto here, too! Just walked back into my office, and I'm having to
force myself to get back into the swing of things. :)

Great weekend, great to see old friends and make several new
connections! Now have lots (more) to think about, process, adapt, and
adopt. Thanks to everyone for an amazing energy level, and to the
organizers for their efforts. This was a huge success!
