Re: [IxDA Discuss] Testing for No Flash situation

2008-02-07 Thread Marty DeAngelo
Sorry it took me so long to reply... got caught up in other issues (I'm
sure we can all relate). Thank you for taking the time to offer some
suggestions.

RE: Mac I might have to keep the Mac option open, but I really needed
to see what it looks like on Windows browsers which means (mostly)
Windows.

RE: FlashBlock I have AdBlock, but I need to see what happens when the
Flash is detected but can't load vs. having it hidden the way these
tools do. Ditto for the Flash and Pics Control feature.

Re: Flash Switcher This looks interesting - I'll have to play with
this one, particularly if it has a Flash Disabled option or something
similar.

RE: BrowserCam I was trying to avoid it, but that's what I eventually
used to get some screenshots. But it's not a good long-term solution.

Thanks again for the suggestions - I'll update if I do find something
that helps me simulate a non-Flash experience short of removing and
reinstalling Flash Player.

Marty

[IxDA Discuss] Testing for No Flash situation

2008-01-31 Thread Marty DeAngelo
I'm doing some reviews of a site and I need to be able to test what
happens if someone doesn't have Flash Player, has an older version or
has it disabled (for whatever reason). I would love to be able to get
some SnagIt's of the screens I see, but I need to find a reliable way of
simulating the experience, preferably with a Firefox add-on instead of
having to turn to Browsercam or a similar service.

Removing and reinstalling Flash Player isn't an option, and we don't
have any test machines without Flash on them. Anyone know of a plugin
or method I could use?

I've not used it but it looks like it may do what you need it to do, and has
a free trial for at least some of the functionality.

If you're on a Mac, which I'm assuming based on the company you're at,
you have some there, you can simply go to:
  /Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flash Player.plugin and dump that file.
Viola, no more flash player and you'll be able to see what it looks
like. Or just pull it out, then you can put it back in.

Since you mention Firefox add-ons, you might try one of these:

Flashblock
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

Flash Switcher (for Windows only)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3649

In Safari, you can simply go to Safari Preferences Security and uncheck
Enable plug-ins.
