Arnie,

I think that we should look at the whole value chain from end to end and
break it into some logical chunks and adopt or define some well defined
API/interface/protocols/whatever between them. This would allow these
modules to develop somewhat independently and interact when the
interfaces needed to be updated to handle new technology or devices or
backends.

It seems like a lot of the basic pieces might already exist and need to
be glued together, and some of the pieces need to be defined and built out.

It would probably help if someone started with an outline of the major
components and what data needs to flow between them. With that as a
straw dog, we can build on that or change it, and get a better
definition and see where we have agreement and/or disagreement. Then
build on those ideas.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] fleet management

2009-07-15 Thread Bob Basques
All,

I'm partial to using GeoMoose (for obvious reasons) and the new version (2.x)
is built on top of Openlayers for the same reasons described below, the
plethora of providers already available.

The Device aspects, I think, need to be addressed from the data perspective,
even if some other group is handling that aspect. We're currently building all
the pieces in house for the AVL side that should be able to take into account
the differences in the types of location data being collected. This may of may
not be useful for others, but it can be put out to the community if there is
interest. Where this group will need to address things, is how the data should
be organized for storage and retrieval.

I'm in the same camp as far as JAVA, never really warmed up to it much.

A big piece (eventually) will be in how to set up things to run semi-portably
(at least for our needs), the end product should be able to provide cursory
usefulness if cut off from the network, this will entail auto-caching and/or
cascading of data to some degree, preferably in an automated way.

I looked at http://opengts.org/ a while back, but Java is not my
favorite platform - just a knowledge and personal preference thing.

It would be nice to build something based on OpenLayers for the mapping
client because that allows great independence and variety of map providers.

The tuff part of all this is dealing with the devices and the
communications changes to get the data feed back into the tracking and
management software. My focus would be to let others deal with that part
and assume that we have various data feeds the we might need to build
software to handle the feeds, and that we focus on the building the
portal application for tracking, reports, and management of resources.

But that is just my two sense. Other thoughts?

The GPL requirements for this case are only when you 'distribute' the
work. I'm assuming you don't expct that people will take your scripts,
build them into the CAD programs, and then 'distribute' them togther. So
long as that is the case, it seems likely that this won't be an issue:
your code is GPL, and you're not 'shipping' their code, or at least not
outside 'mere aggregation' (which doesn't drag in derivative clauses).

So, I can't see any likely problems with this.

[OSGeo-Discuss] OGC Technical Committee Meeting protocol available Online

2009-07-15 Thread Arnulf Christl (OSGeo)
All,
the OGC [1] members meet four times a year for a one week long meeting
to work in working groups. At the fourth day the Technical Committee
meets and motions and votes on new standards, change requests, new
working groups etc. The meetings themselves are only open to members and
invited people.

In order to improve communication with other communities the OGC has
started to publish summaries of theses meetings. To make these more
accessible for OSGeo folks I have started a Wiki page with OGC News [1]
from where the latest meeting protocols are linked.

If you have further question regarding OGC feel free to ask and discuss
on the OSGeo Standards mailing list.

Best regards,
Arnulf

2009-07-15 Thread G. Allegri
Hi Landon.
If understand correctly you use AutoLISP to produce interpreted helper
scripts, so you don't create binary libraries to be statically (in this case
GPL is an issue) or dynamically (there are various interpretations in this
case) linked, am I right?
AFAIK you can keep your code GPL until the programs that use it don't link
it in their binaries. If they use it like a "service" and don't incorporate
your code in their one, the two licences can be considered decoupled.
