Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Seeking Articles, Reports, and Volunteers for Volume 9 of the OSGeo Journal
We're certainly interested in test cases, applications, and interesting new developments related to OSGeo projects, but manuscripts about or related to other open source GIS project are also very. - Dan On Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 2:19 AM, Ann Hitchcock wrote: > Hi Landon, > > > > Is the journal exclusively for OSGeo projects or can other open source > software projects contribute? > > > > Thanks! > > > > Cheers, > > Ann > > > > -- > > Ann Hitchcock > > 52°North Initiative for Geospatial Open Source Software GmbH > > Martin-Luther-King-Weg 24 > > 48155 Muenster, Germany > > > > http://52north.org > > > > General Managers: > > Dr. Albert Remke, Dr. Andreas Wytzisk > > Local Court Muenster HRB 10849 > > > > *Von:* discuss-boun...@lists.osgeo.org [mailto: > discuss-boun...@lists.osgeo.org] *Im Auftrag von *Landon Blake > *Gesendet:* Donnerstag, 13. Landon's definitely right on this - and Ann we'd love articles re: 52 North or and other "friends" that are open source. And a few other areas we'd be interested in seeing: * Open data articles might also be of interest * Proprietary solution mixed with open source, that would be a good case study * Project introductions - "here's how our program works" * In-depth technical articles welcome too - e.g. agorithms or functions you are developing We're working on our 9th volume - that's 9 volumes and going into our 5th year - hopefully we're starting to have an impact and providing a valuable forum. Keep those article proposals coming! Tyler___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] Seeking Articles, Reports, and Volunteers for Volume 9 of the OSGeo Journal
I don't think there is a problem covering other programs or libraries, as long as they are open source and related to geospatial data. I'll let Tyler comment on that question if he is listening. At the end of the day, the Journal belongs to all the OSGeo members, so my opinion isn't the one that counts. :] However, I think we would have skimpy content if we limited ourselves to only talking about OSGeo software projects. You can also submit articles that are related to geospatial topics or the geospatial industry. They don't have to be articles about a specific program. You can use for example (besides other module), the raster map algebra calculator for this: http://grass.osgeo.org/grass64/manuals/html64_user/r.mapcalc.html Especially the eval() function may be of interest to simplify the coding. See for example the script of http://svn.osgeo.org/grass/grass/branches/releasebranch_6_4/scripts/r.shaded.relief/ for an example. > Is that possible? I would say "yes". [OSGeo-Discuss] Iteration and supercomputing with GRASS GIS
Hello, I am very new to GRASS GIS! At the moment I am working with ArcGIS10 to develop a dispersal model (raster based) which involves single calculations for each raster cell (around 20 000 calculations) conducted by an iteration process over the cells of the input raster. As this takes quite long, a change to a Linux based software and the use of a supercomputer (mulitcore) is considered. Therefore especially GRASS GIS sounds interesting to me for the soltution. How are iterations (like in the ArcGIS10 modelbuilder) solved in GRASS GIS? Is that possible? Is it possible to perform the single calculation in parallel mode and use a multicore Linux supercomputer e.g.? Does anyone have experience with such approaches? Thank you very much. /j ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[OSGeo-Discuss] Last call for projects wishing to be included in OSGeo-Live 4.5
The Feature Freeze for OSGeo-Live 4.5 [1] is in two weeks, on 31 January 2011. Could everyone who wishes to see their favourite GeoSpatial Open Source application added to OSGeo-Live please speak up ASAP. Could all existing projects please update your Project Overview [2] and QuickStart documentation [2] to ensure it mentions the correct version of software to be installed, then update the status spreadsheet [3] so translators can start translating. OSGeo-Live 4.5 will be released mid March 2011, ready for a number of big GeoSpatial conferences soon after. Focus on this next release will be on improved Quality and Translating documentation.
