[OSGeo-Discuss] Open Source GIS Special Session in AGF(Asia GeoSpatial Forum)

2012-07-23 Thread Shin, Sanghee
Hi all,

Open Source GIS special session will be there in AGF(Asia GeoSpatial Forum),
since OSGeo is a strategic partner of AGF.

AGF(Asia GeoSpatial Forum) will be held at Hanoi, Vietnam from 17th to 19th
September.

If you have any interest in making presentation there in AGF, please submit
your abstract through to pap...@asiageospatialforum.org . I know abstract
submission is closed. However still you can apply now. This could be one of
alternative to those whom planned to visit to Beijing this year.

I hope I could see many OSGeo guys, especially from Asian region, there in
Hanoi. OSGeo Live DVD will be handed out there.

With regards,

Sanghee

Hi Sanghee,
thanks for submitting this event. This is another good opportunity to
support the Asia region. I was at last year's AGF in Jakarta and very
impressed with the broad set of Open Source based applications
presented there.

The event is now also visible on the Events Calendar on the OSGeo web
site at: http://www.osgeo.org/

Best regards,

this is a good opportunity to build momentum to our educational efforts and

2012-07-23 Thread Firman Hadi
Dear Frans,

Prof. Behr is right that we were invited through this mailing list.
I was there on the first day of the AGSE 2012 to accompany my colleague
presented his research. Too bad that I could not join the FOSS4G-SEA meeting
due to business reason.

Maybe we can initiate the OSGEO Indonesian Chapter meeting?
FYI, the Indonesia Ministry of Research and Technology is currently working
to implement and promote the use of open source GIS for the R D agencies
in Indonesia. We held three days national workshop earlier this month in
Surakarta
and it will be followed by regional workshops later this year.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Board Nomination: Jeff McKenna

2012-07-23 Thread Smith, Michael ERDC-CRREL-NH
I would like to nominate Jeff McKenna to the board of OSGeo.

As to his qualifications, how much time to do you have? Jeff lives and breathes
OSGeo and is one of the most active members of the OSGeo community. He is a
friend, resource and gateway to all who have an interest in Open Source (data
and software) and OSGeo in particular. Jeff is one of the original charter
members (from 2006) and has been on the OSGeo board before (September 2009).
Jeff has a passion for OSGeo that is unrivaled by anyone, a big heart, and is
considered someone always ready to talk or listen when anyone, anywhere has a
OSGeo question, comment or critique. Jeff is very international in his approach
to OSGeo and works with and participates with many, many OSGeo chapters
worldwide. He has also been an incredible force behind almost all of the
international FOSS4G conferences. Jeff would be a humble, strong, active and
loud voice for OSGeo.

And I'm proud to call him my friend.

[OSGeo-Discuss] OGC's GIS SErver vs non Standard like Mapnik

2012-07-23 Thread Frans Thamura
hi all

a little discussion in several area, and i wanna to raise here, esp
related to standard,

yes Java community now start promo the Adopt a JSR program (means use
standard as much as possible, and contribute as much as possible), but
in another world, we have SpringFramework, which a tinny part of them
become standard called atinject, but the ecosystem in Spring, is hugh,
and spring is not standard product.

i see this movement also exist in GIS market, we have propietary ( i
dont like, but goverment love. esp indonesia.. :) money money).. and
we have opensource.

in both area there is standard implementation like WFS WMS in
MapServer or MapGuide or GeoServer, or non standard like Mapnik

but i found Mapnik power the OpenStreetMap, which bring new ecosystem
to the GIS Market. yes, i have OpenStreetMap implementation and now
focus in integration between OSM to our solution, please stay tune..
using OSMdroid, and leaftlet, we can create GIS solution in good and
amazing complete, and our server also quiet stable with Mapnik.. and
Kate reimplement OSM in GeoServer here..

in several private chat regarding OGC in mapnik, i think the founder
(Dane, CMIIW), do a right way, to protect his work :) like Rod Johnson
did with SPring (Spring sold 300m to VMWare near 2009).

my opinion here
1. if opensource, and we create community and work well, standard is
not priority, because our work can become standard, let see how SHP ,
it start from the propietary under ArgGIS, CMIIW.
2. standard if the community manager cannot reach globally, become a
long tail, how to compete?

may be all of you here, can share opinion.

I see also the traffic of this mailing list OSM traffic.

Cameron,

Thank you very much for the advice. We will contact the LOC and make use of the

I have got just one reply who wanted to attend both Tokyo (SotM) and Beijing
(FOSS4G) for now.
Anybody want to join the meet up in Tokyo?
We, Japan chapter would like to know how many people would join there.

 Toru Mori,
This sounds like a great initiative from Japan.
I suggest that you touch base with the Beijing LOC and ask if you can have
access to the list of people who have submitted presentations. You can then
contact each of them and see if they would like to present at your conference.

 Also,
Would you be interested in having someone present the OSGeo-Live
presentation? It provides a comprehensive, high level description of the
state of Open Source Geospatial Software.

We can use the same venue as SotM on 10th Sep., just after SotM for free of

We already booked 4 small rooms (40 persons) and 1 big room (200 persons).
Nothing particular agenda (presentation, workshop, code sprint, sushi party

We don't have extra budget for it, so we cannot pay travel and accommodation
cost. Also we don't have enough human resources as other local chapters do.
However, we want to have something international meet up in Far East Asia.
All thoughts about the meet up are appreciated.
And, we want to meet not only participants of SotM but also who have planned
 to visit Beijing.

We want to know how many people show interest in attending our meet up and
please tell us what you want to do there.
We will arrange the plan hearing your voice.

BTW, OSGeo Japan will hold FOSS4G Tokyo/Osaka 2012 conference in November.
This is annual conference for local audience with only few presentations in
English from overseas guests that we are expecting to have at the annual

Or use a choice voting system, which means your votes are ranked by
preference. There are various ways to then calculate the winners. But
this method does require a certain number of votes to work.
