Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2018] Charter Member elections results

2018-10-30 Thread Ravi Kumar
Welcome to New Charter members of OSGeo.
The single most important duty of electing members to the OSGeo Board is in
the offing.
As a member from the Developing World, wish to start a discussion on FOSS4G
Annual event and Cost of registration etc.

Along with Open Source spirit, spreading Open GIS to nooks and corner's of
the world and especially to the developing world,
is pertinent. Developers, users, and entrepreneurs of the developing can
participate in FOSS4G, if the costs involved are affordable.
Invite aspiring Board members (to be elected) react to this.

Cheers

[OSGeo-Discuss] Link to livestream of GEO Week 2018

2018-10-30 Thread Suchith Anand
Dear colleagues,

The GEO community is meeting this week (29th Oct-2nd Nov 2018) in Kyoto, Japan,
for GEO Week and GEO-XV Plenary. This gathering of GEO’s 105 Member governments
and 127 Participating Organizations will explore efforts and opportunities for
the use of Earth observations for the benefit of humankind, focusing on GEO’s
three priority areas: the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the
Paris Climate Agreement, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

For those unable to attend, you can follow via live stream the plenary
sessions, panel discussions and many side events at
http://earthobservations.org/geo15.php?t=schedule

It is also a great way for knowing updates on the various initiatives in the
GEO Work Programme at http://earthobservations.org/geoss_wp.php

Best wishes,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Enabling the Right to Benefit from Geospatial Scientific Progress and Its Applications

2018-10-30 Thread Suchith Anand
Dear colleagues,

Youth Mappers are organising a community mapathon during AAG 2019 in Washington
D.C and GeoForAll will be supporting this excellent initiative. We will be
using the opportunity to bring together a panel of key educators and thinkers
to discuss these principles and their importance in enabling the UN’s Right to
Benefit from Scientific Progress and Its Applications.

We are especially looking for expert panelists esp. from developing countries
who have interest in open education and open knowledge initiatives to join and
share their expertise. Details below.

AAG 2019 Panel on “Enabling the Right to Benefit from Geospatial Scientific
Progress and Its Applications”

Andy Anderson (Amherst, USA), Suchith Anand (University of Nottingham, UK)

Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) are important contributors
to the advancement of human knowledge, as well as for the attainment of the UN
Sustainable development goals. Through there have been huge advances in GIST
over the last few decades, the benefits of geospatial education and
entrepreneurship opportunities are very limited for economically poor students
and communities, due to the expense of the technology. However, the last decade
has seen a rapid growth in free and open source geospatial software along with
the development of many open data resources, based on open standards. Together
with open educational resources and open access to research publications, these
Open Principles in Geospatial Education have significantly lowered the barrier
to the use of GIST by the broader public.

Disseminating these advances is in keeping with the Right to Benefit from
Scientific Progress and Its Applications promoted by the United Nations [1],
which “includes (a) access by everyone without discrimination to the benefits
of science and its application, including scientific knowledge; (b)
opportunities for all to contribute to the scientific enterprise and freedom
indispensable for scientific research; (c) participation of individuals and
communities in decision-making and the related right to information; and (d) an
enabling environment fostering the conservation, development and diffusion of
science and technology.”

How do we enable access to geoeducational opportunities for all? How can we
help everyone enjoy the benefits of geospatial scientific progress and its
applications? How can we create a global community of practitioners committed
to advancing open principles in geospatial education? This panel will bring
together key educators and thinkers to discuss these ideas and possibilities.

The panel is proposed by the GeoForAll community [2] and is in association with
YouthMappers [3], which will be organizing a community mapathon adjacent to the
conference.

=

If you are interested in participating in this panel, please register for the
AAG 2019 conference to obtain your conference PIN, then send it along with your
presentation title, abstract, and author(s) as soon as possible but no later
than November 2 to Andy Anderson
(aander...@amherst.edu) and Suchith Anand
(suchith.an...@nottingham.ac.uk).

Best wishes,

Suchith

[OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2018] Board Nominations

2018-10-30 Thread Vasile Craciunescu

Dear all,

It's time for the 2018 OSGeo Foundation Board Elections.

The nominations for the OSGeo Board of Directors started already
[1]. Please take a minute to understand what the board actually
does[2]. A director should plan to spend several hours a week on OSGeo
business in order to do a good job. The current board members will
know best.

To nominate a candidate for the board please first confirm with the
person that they would like to stand for election as a Board member.
Then send an email to c...@osgeo.org CCing the candidate by 23:59 GMT on
Sunday 11 November 2018[3] consisting of:

- name and e-mail
- current country of residence
- a paragraph describing why you think this person would make a good
Board member.

Remember that only Charter Members are eligible for a seat on the
Board and for voting but that *anybody* can *nominate* a board member.

Candidates are encouraged to put their vision and ideas for their term
at Election 2018 Candidate Manifestos [4] and sending them to Discuss
mailing list for further conversation.

Thank you.
