Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Free licensed alternative to ESRI map fonts

2020-05-05 Thread Even Rouault
Nyall,

for my understanding, and hopefully help others, I assume the issue is that you
have a style
definition where there are tuples of (font_identifier,
symbol_identifier_in_the_font) to
define the styling of layers with point geometries, right ?
Or possibly some dataset layers whose fields also are characters which are the
symbol_identifier_in_the_font (that is each feature points to a different
symbol), but the
whole layer field uses a single font ?

If that's only the former, then assuming there would be N open fonts already
covering the
whole set of ESRI symbology fonts (unlikely), one could possibly create a
mapping between
each tuple of (ESRI_font_id, ESRI_symbol_id) to (OPEN_font_id, OPEN_symbol_id).
If the
later, then you need a complete replacement for each proprietary font.

How many symbols / fonts are we discussing about ?

I think that is a good idea, and something our marketing committee could
very carefully do.

Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to join the online event on 6th May 2020 at 12 PM
CEST concluding the Kampala INSPIRE hackathon. You will learn about the
results achieved by 10 teams who have addressed the 10 challenges that covers
agriculture, food security, citizen science and more.

The INSPIRE hackathons are not a competition, rather the main focus is building
relationships, making rapid developments, and collecting ideas for future
research and innovation. The goal of the Kampala INSPIRE Virtual Hackathon 2020
is to continue to build and strengthen relationships between several EU
projects and African communities that started in 2019 with the Nairobi INSPIRE
hackathon.

You are invited to join us in celebrating the fruits of this international
collaboration to support a sustainable Africa. The INSPIRE hackathon is not an
event, it is a process. You can read more about the projects at
https://www.plan4all.eu/updates/kampala-inspire-hackathon-2020-challenges/

The awards ceremony is where the top 3 teams/results will be announced by the
jury. The results from the Kampala INSPIRE hackathon are an important basis for
further collaborations, for new project developments, and for inspiration and
use.
