[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo code sprint at Big Data from Space 2023, November ?

2023-04-28 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie via Discuss

Dear OSGeo community,

The European Commission through the Joint Research Center, the EU Satellite Center and the European
Space Agency organize the Big Data from Space 2023 - BiDS 2023 between 6-9 November, in Vienna,
Austria (https://www.bigdatafromspace2023.org/).

In the context of the increasing very good interactions between OSGeo and both the EC and ESA, we've
approached one of the organizers to inquire whether it could be an opportunity to have an OSGeo code
sprint during the event. We've received a very positive response from their side, proposing multiple
ways in which they could support the initiative, such as having an OSGeo dedicated room at the venue
for us to organize ourselves or proposing a Satellite Event
(https://www.bigdatafromspace2023.org/satellite-events). The discussions are still in a very early
phase and to go further we'd like to see if there is interest from the community for a Code Sprint
in November.

Greetings from Bucharest,
Codrina
on behalf of the OSGeo Board.

[OSGeo-Discuss] [info] open tender on open standards and open source tools

2022-11-04 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie via Discuss

Hi, all,

FYI

There is an open tender aimed to better align existing open source tooling for OGC API Features with
a number of standards relevant to Dutch government organizations.

This mainly concerns the following standards:
OGC standards: OGC-API-Features Part 1:Core and then the new OGC-API-Features Part 2 about
coordinate systems.

Dutch API Design Rules : https://publicatie.centrumvoorstandaarden.nl/api/adr/
INSPIRE Requirements :

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] foss4g and open data event - Open Data Science Europe Workshop

2021-05-05 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Hi, Duncan,

Thanks for sharing the news!

The Open Data Science Europe Workshop is an event organized within the
framework of an European project, called the Geo-harmonizer
[https://maps.opendatascience.eu/]. The acronym stands for EU-wide
automated mapping system for harmonization of Open Data based on FOSS4G
and Machine Learning. Thus, all tools for data production used/developed
in the project are open source and all datasets obtained are openly
licensed - hence the 'foss4g' and 'open data' in the subject of the email.
We know that there are FOSS solutions for hybrid events like this one,
however the Zoom/Youtube setup has already been successfully tested by
the organization hosting the event and we don't have enough resources
(time, people etc.) at this point to change.

Warm regards,
Codrina

Hi Codrina

foss4g sounds exciting, I will certainly promote it via osarch.org.

Can I ask why Zoom and Youtube will be tools for sharing content rather
than using FOSS tools? That seems like a strange choice for a FOSS
event. I'm sure the people behind LibrePlanet (
https://media.libreplanet.org/ ) and FOSSDEM ( https://fosdem.org/2021/
) would be happy to share their experience og hosting huge conferences
on Free Software platforms that respect privacy and freedom. I attended
both conferences and they worked very well.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Board] Congratulations and Future collaborations - Board2Board

Dear Miriam,

You've got an impressive dedicated track record and I am happy and
hopeful for even more seeing you in this position.

The HOT goal is as important as, I believe, challenging and I thank you

December with a focus on the on-boarding topics and we'll also discuss
our collaboration and forward tentative dates to meet.

That being said… Congratulations on your election!! I believe that yours
and HOT’s success in your ‘audacious’ goals will ultimately bring a new
generation of mappers to the fore! In the coming years, I truly hope
that we collectively can deliver on the promise that, hopefully, we
started to collectively define at FOSS4G 2018 in Dar es Salaam.

Your proposal to convene a "Board to Board" is a very interesting one,
especially as we have unique challenge in front us; I hope that it is an
event that it would be possible to participate as an observer :-).
Wishing you the very best in your new role and really hope that we can
bring the communities closer together :-)

As you might know in HOT we have the goal to map during the next 5

[OSGeo-Discuss] invitation to check out a new initiative - OSGeo Geolexica

2020-10-14 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Hi all,

I am writing to let you know of a new initiative within our community -
the OSGeo Glossary - led by the Lexicon committee (in formation) with
the scope of defining and managing geospatial terms across communities.
First operative steps have already been made with setting up OSGeo
Geolexica [1] for managing the lexicon database, as well as an initial
load of terms that was done by a bulk load from cleaned terms and
definitions compiled by the GeoForAll group.

The work is done in collaboration with folks from ISO/TC 211, OGC and
The Good Docs Project [2] that have joined the Lexicon committee, which
is very constructive given their decades long experience in terminology,
as well as helping us with cross-organization alignment of concepts or
avoiding term duplication.

Gracefully helping us with the groundwork are two experienced technical
writers that I’d like to introduce to our community, Ankita and Naini -
in cc. Their contributions will support us in doing a clean, sharp job
when it comes to the actual process of glossary construction.

A next big step for the Lexicon Committee is setting up pilot glossary
projects for specific OSGeo projects, irrespective of their status,
incubated, in the process or community. So, if this could be of interest
to you, please let me, Cameron, Ankita or Naini know or by joining and
presenting yourself on the Lexicon mailing list [3] or Slack channel [4].

Cheers and stay safe,
Codrina

[OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G2019 - list of all contributions accepted

2019-05-29 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Dear all,

The moment you’ve been all waiting and anticipating is finally here! Who
will you listen to at FOSS4G2019 Bucharest? Who will dazzle you with a
brand new concept and who will teach you how to do business with open
source? What about understanding how this diverse community even
functions? And what state of the art workshops will you attend? Until
now, you could only guess, but that time is over!

With great joy we share with you the list of all the awesome submissions
the Program Committee [1], the Workshop Committee[2] and the Academic
Committee[3] have selected to build the perfect FOSS4G 2019 conference!
And what a challenge the selection was! We were keen in having all OSGeo
projects present, the geographical and gender based diversity of our
community represented and also keep a fair amount of
talks/person/company. And, we have a little surprise for you. FOSS4G
Labs are back! As we have received an impressive number of workshops, as
much as we had to refuse 50% of submissions, the BLOC tried and
succeeded in securing space for running 9 labs during the conference.
Here is the hands-on quick dive into various FOSS topics [4]. We hope
you will be pleased with our FOSS4G2019 program work.

All the general track and workshops contributors with accepted
submissions are kindly asked to quickly use their pretalx account (the
one used to submit the proposal(s)) to confirm their participation to
FOSS4G2019, so we can build the conference detailed program as swiftly
as possible.

As we very well understand the important combination between the
conference program and EarlyBird registration, we will extend the
EarlyBird registration until 10th of June 24:00 UTC!

Workshops will be available for your choosing when you register in about
1 – 2 days. As, sadly, we don’t have a mechanism of adding workshops to
already made registrations, participants will have to make a new
registration selecting only the workshops.

FOSS4G2019 Bucharest is just 88 days away. Secure your seat [5] to the
biggest and most animated geospatial event of 2019!

We would like to end by offering the Bucharest Local Organizing
Committee official apologies to all contributors of FOSS4G2019 for the
hiccups in the announcement emailing system. We deeply hope the
situation did not cause any major inconvenience to anyone.

With great excitement, we announce that today the second major step in
building the FOSS4G 2019 program has begun!

As the Call for Contributions closed, we were overwhelmed by the great
response of the community. With joy, we announce that we have received
295 submissions for the general track and 73 for the workshop section!

The global FOSS4G is the flagship event of OSGeo, a grassroots community
that puts high value on the needs and requests of its members. That is
why in evaluating the talks that will form the FOSS4G 2019 Bucharest
program stands the community voting process. Thus, please receive our
invitation to read through all submissions received and vote! [1]

Simultaneously, the FOSS4G2019 Bucharest Program Committee has also
started the first phase review, so stay tuned.. The exceptional
submission will be earlier announced!

Happy voting!
Codrina Ilie
FOSS4G 2019 Program Chair

I would like to nominate Tõnis Kärdi from Estonia for OSGeo charter
membership.

Tönis was present at FOSS4G 2016 and FOSS4G Europe 2017 and it was great
to discuss with him. He gave talks on FOSS4G Europe and was involved in
the code sprint.

And he has now the chance to create an Estonian OSGeo Local Chapter and
build up a great local community.

Tõnis has been active in the geo field for approximately 15 years but is
a relative newcomer to the world of osgeo and works with open data and
open source GIS solutions at his work at Estonian Ministry of

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] R: [Board] Not graduated OSGeo project...

2016-10-21 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Dear Maxi,

I agree with Maria.

In my understanding, the Data4All initiative should be self standing
within OSGeo.

My reasons revolve around the idea that open (geo)data extends far
beyond the public sector (data collected and/or produced by national
agencies within monitoring activities) or the academic sector (data
produced and/or collected within various research projects or by
students for their thesis). OSM, HOT wouldn't really fit in any of the
mentioned.
Furthermore, open (geo)data extended further than the realm of
geoscience, thus I think Data4All should be a initiative, project (call
it as one may) with a broad perspective and not confined within the
boundaries of what we have now within OSGeo.

My2c.

Cheers,
Codrina

Dear Codrina and Angelos,
as co-chair of the Open Geoscience committe as you showed interest in
re-vitalising the open data stuff, I would like to invite you to form
and lead a specific working group within the Open Geoscience Committee.
We have already set a WG for open monitoring system which is very
oriented to produce Open Data from field observations in "near real time".

I also think it would be great to set-up an OSGeo CKan server for
promoting this and I would be very interested in contributing to this.

please, let me know your opinion on this.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo and Open Data?

2016-10-19 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Dear all,

Probably the best argument for the strong connection between the
'software development foundation' we fundamentally are and data is the
talk Arnulf gave at FOSS4G Bonn: Software comes and goes. Mind the Data!
[https://vimeo.com/187556741]. Furthermore, I believe that the affinity
between the philosophy of open source and open data is indisputable.

That being said, I would like to mention a discussion me and Vasile
prepared and facilitated within the workshop 'Open data priorities and
engagement — identifying data sets for publication'

Context: workshop organized within the share PSI 2.0 project: The
network for innovation in European public sector information
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/].

The name of our session was Free our Maps and the preparation can be
found here
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/wiki/images/b/b5/Abstract_free_our_maps.pdf].
Notes take by Ingo Simonis fron OGC can be found here
[https://www.w3.org/2013/share-psi/workshop/Timisoara/Freemaps]. The
issues we tried to tackle there were identified during the work we did
in the http://geoidea.ro/ project, a project for catalyzing and pushing
forward the open gov geodata initiative in Romania.

Warm regards,
Codrina

Open data is a big part of what makes this community awesome.

That said OSGeo originally had open data as part of our mandate (with a
committee etc...). This mandate was scaled back last year, to recognize
that OSGeo is now pursuing open data through relationships with other
communities (such as the open layers community).

So to fit in with your theme, OSM / GeoNames / Natural Earth provide the
"open data" and OSGeo provides the "in action".

 Dear Cro,
please find bellow the nomination for Vasile for this year election

I would like to nominate Vasile Craciunescu for this year election.
Vasile is a researcher at Romanian National Meteorological

He is very active in the Romanian community, he is one of the
founder of the OSGeo romanian local chapter and always bring many
members to the FOSS4G, to both local and international editions.
Vasile was one of the pioneer, with Jachym, of the FoSS4G-Europe

technical tasks for the board to accomplish his task and to
facilitate the work of every board members. He has a good

Vasile has proven his dedication to OSGeo over the year and, by

Dear OSGeo community,

It is my pleasure to nominate Nicolas Bozon (nicolas.bo...@gmail.com)
for the OSGeo Board of Directors 2016 elections.

Nicolas is an avid OSGeo advocate from France, with a global approach
of open source and open collaboration. He's been using and promoting
FOSS4G technologies since 2006; he is a Charter Member since 2011 and
a Marketing Committee member since 2012.

He co-founded the ZOO-Project, the Open WPS platform, and is part of
its PSC and contributors since 2009. He is also a regular attendee of
global and regional FOSS4G events since 2008, for which he is often
helping on organization and marketing.

Nicolas is a geospatial expert and designer, with complementary
research, development and business experiences. He is also maintaining
a vast network of users, developers and researchers within OSGeo and
also beyond in a broader geospatial community.

Active at project, chapter, conference and committee levels, Nicolas
is strongly committed to open source and has inspiring vision for the
Foundation. He also has a deep understanding of the evolution of OSGeo
into a global volunteer organization and a clear roadmap to further
strengthen our Foundation.

Nicolas has a keen interest in geospatial innovation which he manages
to also leverage for community related issues. His deep insight into
media design, branding and marketing will greatly help OSGeo to grow
as a top class volunteer geospatial organization.

Given his wealth of experience, his international profile and
excellent communication skills, I believe Nicolas would be a great
addition to the OSGeo board.

Best regards,

Markus

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] parcel data in US

2015-10-15 Thread Codrina Maria Ilie

Hi Jachym,

The first place I would look for USA parcel data is data.gov. The portal
could be considered as an official gov aggregator of data. Therefore, if
a gov agency has it then there you should find it (open or just
reference to it).

Open Knowledge[1] is conducting a worldwide open data census[2]. This
year, they introduced land ownership info. I am copy-pasting here what
has been submitted by volunteers on US, related to the subject:

"It does not seem that federal / national government has a database...
The Bureau of Land Management has a pretty antiquated website[3] that
does not have a great cadastre survey page. There is a company[4] that
sells parcel-level data, and a client they note is the government. The
state of Montana has a pretty good cadastre map[5] and Oregon[6]
something similar but I don’t think there is a national map that has all
the aggregated cadastre maps."

I would mention that the submitted info has not yet been reviewed.

Dear CRO

I want to nominate:

Marco Minghini

email: marco.minghin...@gmail.com

motivations:

It is my great pleasure to nominate Marco Minghini (known as Mingo)
for
OSGeo Charter membership. Mingo has been an active advocate of Open
Source
GIS software and a regular presenter at FOSS4G events. Recently he
was the
co-organizer of the very successful FOSS4G 2015 Europe at Como,
Italy. He
has been working tirelessly to promote the development of Open Source
software and data in academia and within the COST Networks (an EU funded
inter-disciplinary network that involves almost 30 countries) where
he is
an active member. In July he organized in Como an amazing Training
School
FOSS4VGI - Using Free and Open Source Software with VGI: integration,
analysis and visualisation (supported by the COST Action TD1202 -
Mapping
and the Citizen Sensor initiative), gathering students and young
scientists from all over Europe. I have known and worked with Mingo for
many years, starting from his bachelor thesis; he was one of my
brightest
students and is now an excellent researcher and promoter of Open Source
geo. Those who know Mingo know his big bright smile and his endless
enthusiasm. Please welcome Mingo as an OSGeo Charter member.

For the sake of simplicity I put him in CC, in such a way that he can
directly confirm to be interested in such nomination.

Best regards.
