Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Open Source Geospatial Atlas
Hi Folks, Hi Guys, I agree totally with everything that has been said. I don't have a problem with using multiple applications to conduct my GIS work. I do all the time. I suppose the issue is what the purpose of the Atlas will be. To promote fosGIS or promote Open Source. I was under the impression it was the former and so I suggested not using Inkscape. I presumed, the Atlas would illustrate what most mere mortals could do with fosGIS rather than show what some creative genius can achieve. If however the task is to create beautiful maps using whatever open source package comes to hand then by all means incorporate Inkscape manipulated images -- it seems to be the preferred tool for manipulating maps generated by a whole raft of fosGIS packages. -- Cheers Simon I view this exercise as a Howto on creating great maps with open source geospatial software. As part of the effort, I would assume that there would be text included that walked one through the map creation process, including steps where tools such as Inkscape were used to enhance the visual impact. To me, telling how it was done with open source geospatial tools is as important as that it was done with open source geospatial tools. Searching for MIT or GPL dual license ,https://github.com/search?q=MIT+or+GPLrepo=langOverride=start_value=1type=Everythinglanguage=, turns up 3475 repositories. I wonder whether this project is a candidate for OSGeo-Live, http://live.osgeo.org. In looking through your introduction I have a few questions, which were not obvious to me. What type of user would wish to make use of Whitebox GAT? What tasks would they be performing? Does Whitebox make use of other geospatial libraries? Maybe geotools or sextante? One of the most effective ways of attracting co-developers is to build upon an existing project or library and adopt developers from this project. Who is currently using Whitebox GAT? You would likely wish to weave answers to these questions into your website home page. Well we've been very busy working on it, and now we're are excited to announce that the new version of Whitebox GAT has finally arrived. Please visit http://www.uoguelph.ca/~hydrogeo/Whitebox/index.html for more information. Whitebox has been completely re-written. The main reason for this was to allow Whitebox to be truly multi-platform, running equally well on MS Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. This has been a major undertaking and as such there are still a few tools and features from Whitebox 1.0.7 that need to be translated over to the new version. We're looking for volunteers to help with the work yet to be done (including working on the help documentation, testing and reporting bugs). Whitebox is now written using Java, the world's most popular multi-platform programming language. I know there are a lot of you out there with Java programming skills who could contribute to the project. There have also been many additions to version 2.0, including support for displaying vector ShapeFiles, plenty of new tools, new image processing functionality, and an improved user interface ( http://www.uoguelph.ca/~hydrogeo/Whitebox/screenshots.html ). Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Re: Best GIS with below listed requirements
Mayank, I'm a bit confused. Do you want to run a desktop gis through a web interface, or be able to perform some GIS functions similar to a desktop gis through a web interface ? It sounds like you want to be able to run a specific GIS software remotely as a thin client, but though a web interface. I believe that you can accomplish remote access via Citrix through a web interface. The upcoming NX 4.0 software should also offer this web based thin client access. You can thin client into windows computers via rdesktop ( available on most linux distributions) or via the NX client, http://www.nomachine.com/documents.php. You can also set up one of the various flavors of VNC services on windows or linux. you can alos set up NXserver on linux and access it from Windows, Mac, or Linux. ( Supposedly there is a version of nxserver for windows in the works) . If you are going linux to linux, you can use ssh with X forwarding on and have the program execute remotely but display locally. If you want to make a web interface look and act like a desktop gis with access to all of the commands in say, GRASS, then I think you've got a fair bit of web programming ahead of you. Doug, thank you for this information. One minor clarification on terminology (I will never tire): Using the wording commercial and open source to differentiate proprietary form free/open license models is misguiding as all Open Source software can also be used in commercial contexts and is thus also commercial software. This has recently been clarified by the US Department of Defense available in a document [1], attachment 2 on page 5, §2 a): In almost all cases, OSS meets the definition of “commercial computer software” and shall be given appropriate statutory preference in accordance with 10 USC 2377 (reference (b)) (see also FAR 2.101(b), 12.000, 12.101 (reference (c)); and DFARS 212.212, and 252.227-7014(a)(1) (reference (d))). (I love to cite those guys, they manage to make everything look dead serious :-) The correct term to differentiate free and open source license models from proprietary license is models is proprietary, and nothing but. After reading Todd Hoff’s blog I’d be curious to see if PostGIS could be configured to make use of large memory capacities and how it affects performance: http://highscalability.com/are-cloud-based-memory-architectures-next-big-thing Thanks Randy From: discuss-boun...@lists.osgeo.org [mailto:discuss-boun...@lists.osgeo.org] On Behalf Of Craig Miller Sent: Friday, October 23, 2009 8:38 PM To: 'OSGeo Discussions' Subject: RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] WMS Performance Shootout presentation/results I agree wholeheartedly. It looks like the bottleneck was the database. I’ve been privy to some MapServer tests done by testing teams over several months and the result there was always deploying the data with long update cycles to the middle tier disks instead of using the database. Only then could the performance of the actual map servers be evaluated. Performance shootouts/testing take time to do correctly as each run teaches you more and more about how your deployment architecture affects the results. The very close results suggests to me that the bottlenecks were external to the WMS and more related to external limitations like the ability to supply things like I/O. It would be interesting to have profiling data on where the response time was spent. For Mapserver it'd be a simple case of running Valgrinf and KCacheGrind: http://kcachegrind.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/show.cgi/KcacheGrindIndex Case point. We had an in house app for crunching big raster and KCacheGrind showed us that an external library was the biggest bottleneck. A. Perhaps this is related to Helena's OSGeo Edu posting , but more efforts towards outreach to the Elementary, Middle, and High School ( pre-college) educational communities. Working with them to set up pre-packaged lessons involving geographic concepts in which you can give the student a CD/DVD with project data and software that they could use at home on their Windows/Mac/Linux box. I'd really like to hear thoughts on the matter and pool a few of the ideas together for further discussions amongst committees, projects, chapters and the board. It's also a good way for the board nominees in the upcoming election to get a sense of where other members are thinking these days. My measurement of success for OSGeo and priorities I hope it shares in the next 3-5 years are the following three items: - Continued expansion of the local chapters. Local chapters make OSGeo real in the sense that mailing lists, websites, and an IRC channel can't. - The conference continues uninterrupted for the next five years, and we start to use it our central fundraising piece. - Cross-project collaboration, like the journal, osgeo4w, metacrs, benchmarking, system administration, and geodata continues to be fostered by us. From my biased developer's perspective, these have been OSGeo's biggest accomplishments along with the local chapter development and consolidation of the conference. +1 on these, including OSGeo Edu efforts as another example of cross- project collaboration Helena Howard ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss inline: graycol.gifinline: pic02306.gifinline: ecblank.gif___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I earnestly believe that FOSS tools are available for adoption in local government. Critical is how to integrated them to a provincial/city wide government IT infrastructure. In the Philippines, geospatial technologies are often used in: property/parcel tax mapping zoning development planning However, in most cases these domains are loosely integrated. Sometimes the GIS in the planning division doesn't communicate with the assesor's office in terms of data management. What we are looking for are stories that integrate FOSS GEO tools in the overall IT infrastructure. I know some of the strategies maybe institutional rather than technical in nature. What technologies do we need (dbase managment, server, desktop apps)? How do we provide capacity to local government staff? How do we integrate the data into planning?
