[OSGeo-Discuss] tiling alternative

2017-06-14 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
hi there,

I have the need for maps on hosted platforms without mapserver. I'm
thinking in use Leaflet and tilesets (PNG for transparency) for that.

What would be a practical to do that locally? (under an OSGeo Live
workstation)

MapNik? MapProxy? or should I try MapCache because my source services is
under MapServer/WMS?

thanks for any advice.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Re: How to enable a spatial query with MODE=FEATUREQUERY (CGI mode)?

2012-02-15 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
hi all,
Just to close this topic, I put it to work after the folloowing changes:

* mapfile
- Tolerance = 0 at both layers (poly and point layer)
- template is set at both layers
* web template
- inserted a hidden html param named 'slayer' with value = poly_layer
- inserted a radio html param named 'mode' with 'value' = featurequery

now, it's working! :-)

[OSGeo-Discuss] How to enable a spatial query with MODE=FEATUREQUERY (CGI mode)?

2012-02-14 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
Hi,

I have two layers (poly_layer and point_layer) and using MapServer CGI
interface I wish to:
a) - let user click a polygon at 'poly_layer'
b) - then list attributes of 'point_layer' that are contained into the
polygon choosen at (a)

At my mapfile, both layers has layer->template property set and at CGI
interface (web->template) I'm passing:
- mode = featurequery
- slayer = poly_layer
- qlayer = point_layer

But after the click on map, got only a "not found" error.

Am I doing right use of this mode? Or for this need, is it better to
use another mode?

ps.: all layers are Mapinfo files and can't use PostGIS at this application.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Candidate's Thoughts on OSGeo

2011-08-05 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
hi Tyler,

Despite some thoughts below might not be new in north hemisphere,
there goes my Latin American user vision:

#OSGeo is already inside the minds of power GIS users and GIS
developers, we already know like things work and how/what to be done
to work. Now maybe is the time to make OSGeo more visible and
understood by users
##ok, it's a long process but it has to begin. eg.: general population
already knows that "oh Linux? yes, I got. It's free of charge right?"
and some commercial users, after 2008 economical crisis plus
web2/social networking boom, already got that it's not just a matter
of cost, but also because free/opensource tool will not make a big
change of architecture, basic concepts/structures without talking to
users ( eg.: MapServer mapfile programming structure is almost the
same since it was born, but in some commercial tools things may change
a lot in minor/major releases)
##these same end-users ( including independent workers, commercial
users) must to see that F4G platform can help SERVICES market: helping
to cut costs on software acquisition ( smaller total project/service
costs) and making service providers FREE from this or that software
supplier ( and to help services market is help on job opportunities
too... a cool social role of foss and foundations)
##and maybe one way to help on that is to make more SOLUTION cases
visible. First step is to prove that existing foss technology works
and this is done. The step to enforce is to 'sell the fish' that
integration with commercial solutions is possible and support on foss
communities can even be better/faster than commercial support centers.
##certification and stamp matters: for corporate communities/users is
important to ensure that this or that software/solution have an "OSGeo
certified stamp". There are a lot of users that do not need more than
one or two softwares. And most of them is always looking for work with
only one, if possible. So, if the second tool the user will look for
also has the "osgeo stamp", user may feel better with that. In this
sense, a certification program (eg. Linux LPI) for professional geo
users is a plus too.
##interoperation: another oportunity maybe could be to insert OSGeo
stamp/talks on other kind of events - not only on GIS events but also
on business events ( logistics, environmental, agriculture, forestry,
mining, etc) with less tech language and more 'executive'
presentations
##inside corporate world, acronym like GeoBI, GeoETL, GeoEAI or GeoCRM
can take attention of sponsors ( managers, directors). And this will
also help on base techs projects advertising.
##OSGeo partnering with academia projects ( R&D) and private/publich
companies will always be welcome too.
#for the power user who follow planet OSGeo is not hard to get the 1st
contact with a new released tool. But, for the newcomers, a simple
setup can take a month or months. How to help on that? More docs (
'for dummy' guides, quick ref cards, process oriented manuals and not
only function guide/reference guide) and tutorials and this include
local references.
##and for translation tasks, I believe it's not only to do the
translation. But to adapt texts, images, data and senses can be a plus
on users influence
##tools such as surveys (online, magazines, collected on events) could
help to map local gap's and user desire/needs
#communication: I think local committees/communities should always be
in talk to international foundation goals and tasks and vice-versa.
Parallel initiatives such as local groups must be inserted/combined on
OSGeo projects/tasks - we should sum efforts and not divide. So, it's
important to highlight the benefits on working together OSGeo to these
parallel heads.

Ten or fifteen years ago I saw a lot of projects and services to be
killed because the lack of free options or free cases. Now, we have a
lot of options to replace or interoperate with. We need more
visibility, more users enabled to call the attention of other users.

best

[OSGeo-Discuss] FOSS4G tools - dependency map

2009-11-13 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
Source: http://anthologis.com/2009/11/13/foss4g-tools-dependency-map/

In 2008 after some GIS setup tasks, I decided to map package
dependencies in order to help me on future setup tasks.
So, after discovering the great GraphViz tool
(http://www.graphviz.org/), I created some scripts to map these deps.
Now, after some revisions, the diagram is finally published at

Note: due to corporate restrictions, I´m not able to publish its
source yet. But if you need a higher resolution or report bugs at the
diagram, feel free to contact me.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Top ten myths for open source in geo?

2009-01-25 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
In 2008 I worked on a project all based on ESRI 9.2 family. At that
point I didn´t know much of ESRI products and had only worked with
foss products. Now I feel more confortable to give an opinion for
that:

# myth monopoly : every only remember the (supposed) 30% esri market
share. Remember there´s also very nice commercial products like Safe
FME, CadCorp, ManiFold, PCI, ERDAS, ENVI and others ( and sometimes
most of these are embed on ESRI packs - eg.: raster support on AG
family )

# sustainability : while every major release of ESRI will force you to
re-develop your customizations, FOSS products keep release more
compatible. Example: a MapServer 3.x developer will use the same
principles and concepts on MapServer 5.x version. But, an ArcIMS
developer had to change its base when upgrading to ArcGIS Server 9.1,
recode for adapting to ArcGIS Server 9.2 API´s and now all this
concepts will change again with 9.3 version.

# maintenance : foss product will run more closer to open standards (
eg.: OGC´s ). So, you change foss parts without re-coding your entire
solution. The cost of training a new human resource on
insert/update/delete geo-feature using ArcObjects/ArcSDE is so much
higher when compared to OGC-SFS, per example.

# support : while on FOSS communities you can have a reply on minutes,
on 'esri forum' you can your topic open for months (
http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=158&f=2284&t=251001 ,
http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=158&f=2290&t=253698 ,
http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=985&t=270205&g=1 ) and NEVER
get a solution. In my sample, we discover a bug on ArcSDE/ArcMap
9.2sp4 but this will certainly NEVER be fixed because sp6 didn´t fixed
and ESRI will probably only look for 9.3 developments for now and on.
Because non-US customers CAN´T contact ESRI directly, we can only keep
suffering with poor local support.

best regards,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Looking for free Country/State/City/districts maps

2008-02-12 Thread Eduardo Kanegae
Hi folks,

I have a specific need for a customer: they have a flash application which
let users to click an object and then open child levels. Example: when
users click
a country, he can see the states of this country and so on.

This application handle the following levels: Country -> State -> City
-> District

The application is running but there are some itens from this dataset
which are currently missing.

It´s not difficult to find country or even states boundaries. But
cities and districts boundaries I thought would propably
hard to find or it will be a country-by-country research.

A last note: we can´t re-make the application - which will probably be
easier using WMS or Google Maps.

thanks for any help
