FYI,
OTB does support GDAL 2.0 now (trunk). But it also maintains compatibility
with GDAL 1.x versions. Next release( probably before christmas) can depend
on GDAL 2.0.

 Hi all,

I'd like to nominate Sebastiaan Couwenberg (or Bas for short) as a
 charter member.
Bas has been incredibly active in the Debian GIS project (and through
that Ubuntu GIS and OSGeo live). He has packaged an enormous
amount of applications [1]. These include most of the cornerstones of
a FOSS4G system such as GDAL, GRASS and QGIS. But perhaps even more
importantly he has been active mentoring other packagers and writing
 our guidelines for packaging [2].

His eye for detail often uncovered issues in many of our libraries and
programs, for which he often prepared patches, improving life even for
those of you not using Debian or Ubuntu :-)

 Kind Regards,
 Johan

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Newbie,Contribute through GSOC Program

2014-01-08 Thread Rashad M
Hi Jayesh,

It is totally upto you to decide which OSGeo project to work. There are
plenty of opportunity in every project. Here are some pointers.

1. Start by checking out (not download) source from the project repository
2. build it own your own. There is always a howto build for every project.
3. Read the project documentation and try some tutorials
4. Try to write a simple hello osgeo project application using the API
5. Prepare an idea rather than a gsoc proposal( you should start working on
idea to proposal when gosc program gets announced) as early as possible

As you are from IIIT-H and was interested to work on OSGeo project you
should talk with prof. Rajan of LSI lab and other students in the lab
participated in GSoC in past years. There were participation since 2011

Hi,
sorry for the delay.

1. All open source. there is a web interface for NGO to login and create a
project eg: livestock
here they create the project with attribute info they are sending along
with a code to identify location.
Here is the list of packages used
PHP - server side scripting
PostgreSQL - database
Apache - web server
A GSM modem - connected with a system (we used Linux)
smstools - read sms from a GSM modem

VRParser - A custom parser developed to parse the SMS and push the data to
VRGeo database. NGO's can later login to vrgeo hosted on lsi server and
view gis data. Each project comes as a seperate layer and each sms comes
as feature on the corresponding layer.

a sample sms would look like

gac500032.ls.gt.sp.10

the first code is for the location its tied with pincode + three letter
from the place, Gachibowli here in example.

ls - live stock
gt - goat
sp - small pox
10 - affected number
but for some cases you can specify decimals using comma
10,5 - 10.5 used for mapping in borewells

we use . (dot) as seperator for fields which is easily accessible on phone
with keypad.
and , (comma) is used in decimal numbers

This is a very simple explanation but I can give you a document explaining
everything in detail. I am putting Naveen and Varun in CC who has been in
charge of the implementation of the web interface.

2) Interface is automatic. As soon as an SMS is received it is passed to
VRParser which parses and pushes the data to an internal database. (we sync
these database with the one hosted on server on a periodic basis. (this can
be automated using some cron job. But as we are not getting too much data
for now, we are doing this sync manually.)

SMS part of VRGeo (VRGeo-SMS) has been doing this for some NGO's in

basically it can be used in other scenarios. The good thing is it doesnt
need a smartphone. Any phone which can send sms is the only requirement.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] WAP SMS in GIS

2013-09-10 Thread Rashad M
Hi,
you dont need internet to do this. Web mapping can be detached from the
whole thing. But we dont want to do that because primary users of this need
to be accessed on web. Since we are not pushing everything from local db to
server db as the last step. A net connection is not required as long as the
parser and database is running on the same system where the Modem is
connected.
