Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New AcidMaps with Geoserver plugin

Just to make it clear, as I've just read Cameron's reply, I'm not
proposing to make AcidMaps' core part of geoserver, I love it being a
separate project, but just contributing the GeoServer plugin.

Cheers,
Gabriel

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New AcidMaps with Geoserver plugin

2011-04-02 Thread Gabriel Roldán
Hey Mauricio,

just now had time to look deeper into the project. The GeoServer plugin
looks really great. Reusing the WMS "infrastructure" in such a clever
way is just neat, and being able to use any point layer as data source
rocks.

Question: would it work with multi-point layers too?

I would like to push the plugin into GeoServer's svn as a community
module, if you guys are up to it, and get you commit access on that
module. We could even arrange to have the native libraries installed on
the hudson server and get it into continuous integration once it
upgrades to "extension" (i.e. supported and documented).

We could even set up a couple integrated demos. I think there should be
a lot of people interested on it and perhaps having it as an official
GeoServer extension would give it a bit more of exposure to users, which
could be of interest to you.

I for instance already have a use case in mind which is creating heat
maps out of the Suite's monitoring plugin database.

Ok, too much of a rant so far. Congratulations on the project again!

Chau loco,
Gabriel.

Hope to see an offline implementation (i.e. not server) of AcidMaps as
QGIS plugin soon.

It will be useful for quick and easy data analysis using AcidMaps.

I don't think that the core of acidmaps would be moved to geoserver,
because we like the idea of a shared library that can be accessed form
multiple sources, JNI being one of those, some future implementations
could be a MapServer plugin, a plugin for QGis, etc...

We created first the geoserver plugin because that's what most of our
projects are using as map server, but we want to integrate it with
others systems too.

>From the top of my head, another easier way to install it can be a
self-contained jar with the plugin, and compiled native libraries
embedded.

Other could be changing the plugin access to the native library from JNI
to JNA.

It would be good to know if the GeoServer team it's interested, we can
probably find a better/smarter way to integrate AcidMaps.

Given the live cd it's based on ubuntu, I think that the library can be
installed on system path, and the geoserver plugin be already deployed
in geoserver/WEB-INF/lib.

Thanks to XoomCode team!
It can be very useful, and it's also a good "tutorial" for Geoserver/C++
integration ;)

Looks cool.
Are there plans to move acid maps code into the geoserver code base at
some point?
From a packaging and sales story, it will be much easier to install and
use acid maps if it comes default with GeoServer.
